Callie ran across campus wishing she could get to the stables faster than she was going. The sun was beating down on her as she passed various faces who probably thought she was insane. It looked as though as she was running from a monster, but in reality she was running to a friend. Everything around her seemed to blur as she was only focused on her destination. She was so excited by the news that she had even left her beloved pocket cam in her door by mistake. Although, she had been learning how to do without it as of late.
It had been awhile since she had seen Violet, and as excited as she was to see her, she hoped that only good news would come out of it. There was too much bad going on right now she wasn’t sure if she could handle it. There was so much to catch up on. Callie knew Violet had gone home to see her parents, her father was in some sort of accident, but everything had happened so fast that she never really got all the details. Richard’s face appeared in Callie’s mind. She didn’t want to leave him, but she needed to, for now.
As she approached the entrance she slowed her pace and attempted to catch her breath. The blonde fixed her side braid before entering, smiling wide as she passed all of the horses, including her own. “Hiya there stranger.” She said with a bit more twang in her voice than usual. Her friend, her sister, had returned.

Hands moving, Violet was busy cleaning out one of the stalls. She was happy to be back with the horses. Beau in particular had been giddier than anything Violet had seen.Smile forming, she continued working as music played softly from the radio. Ears perked when Violet thought she'd heard something. hands stilling and feet moving, Violet peeked out of the stall to suddenly greet a familiar face.
"Callie Montgomery!" She exclaimed, accent increasing with excitement. Work forgotten, Violet dropped her things and walked over to envelope the younger girl in a hug. Powers ignored, Violet didn't even try to suppress them she was so happy. Of all the people she'd missed from the academy, Callie took the cake. It was the one regret Violet had when she'd departed so swiftly to see her Pa. "Ain't you a sight for sore eyes!" She added, a laugh following. Arms held out, Violet gave Callie a little bit of space. Eyes roamed and smile grew, Violet observed her friend.
She's closer to being my sister now if anything.
"I'm awfully sorry I had to go on such a short notice. I barely gave you time'ta react." She apologized, voice sincere. "How've you been? Nothin' bad happen while I was gone? You alright in school?" She questioned, tone concerned.

The blonde bounced her head from side to side, her hands rested in her back pockets. Her smile grew even bigger when she heard Violet say her name. She welcomed her with open arms and a hug, tightening her grip around Violet. Her mind was buzzing with thoughts and happiness she hadn’t even considered Violet’s effect on her. Granted, Callie had been getting use it over time, but the connection they had was stronger, and it had nothing to do with her abilities.
Callie pulled away slowly, arms still out reached gripping Violet’s hands. She looked at her fondly. “I could say the same thing ‘bout you!” She was glad that Violet was in good spirits. That mean nothing bad had happened. Right?
She waved her hands dismissively. “Don’t be silly now. Ya gotta do watcha gotta do.” She said with a shrug, feeling a bit anxious to ask what she had wanted. “Everythin’ good back home? With your daddy?” Her facial expression softened, concern apparent in her blue eyes.
Violet’s question made Callie cringe a bit. Had something bad happen? Yes. To her specifically? Well not technically. But it still stung a bit. She hadn’t told Violet about how she thinks she felt about Richard. Which had been brought to her attention by none other than his own mother. No. She had a hard time talking about it, to everyone, including him, and even Violet, the person she considers a sister. Callie had blabbed on about her friend to Violet, but never about anything substantial. She told her about his attack, but it was hard not to have heard about it.
She let out a soft sigh. Unsure of if she should tell her. “School’s good.” That much was true. “I ain’t gonna lie to you Vi, I’ve been a bit out of it.” She said, almost as if she was ashamed to admit that. Here Callie was, the open book, struggling to express how she feels about something. It was a first, then again, everyone has an exception.

Hands held, Violet's power seeped into Callie. Calm would consume and affection would follow, but Violet knew a majority of it was simply from their friendship. Nonetheless power subdued, as Violet would rather be safe than sorry. "Still, I wish I could've given you more've a warnin'." She said, voice slightly sheepish. "Everything's fine. Pa's okay too. He was more wound up than a coil when he wasn't allowed'ta work. You would've laugh if you'd have seen 'em." She added, softly laughing.
Eyes caught the cringe when Violet asked her question. Concern immediately flared and Violet gently pulled Callie over so they could sit in Violet's "office." Sitting, Violet let her power's strength return to normal as her worry grew.
Something ain't right.
Attention focused and eyes searching, Violet noted how Callie almost looked ashamed. The expression was almost alien on the normally bubbly blonde's face. Hands squeezing, Violet offer the girl a smile. "No need'ta be ashamed've that. Everyone goes through a slump at least once." Violet said, tone kind and gentle. "Now I won't pry, but would you want'ta talk about it?"

A faint smile grew, Callie felt Violet’s powers affect her. She didn’t mind, she welcomed the feeling. She couldn’t remember the last time she had felt this calm as of late. “Don’t you be silly now. I’m just glad everythin’s fine.” She said with relief in her voice, letting out a small giggle. “I can only imagine. When’s he allowed to go back to work anyhow?” She asked, genuinely interested. She knew partly it was because she didn’t want to talk about herself right now. “Was it nice bein’ home with the folks?”
Callie followed Violet’s lead, and took a seat. She knew that Violet was concerned. She hadn’t mean to give that impression. It wasn’t that bad really. “I ain’t ashamed.” She said a bit defensively. She knew she needed to elaborate. She didn’t want Violet thinking it was something worse than it really was. Callie had been in a bit of a funk lately, but she wasn’t ashamed about it, she was annoyed with herself for getting like that in the first place. At least that’s what she told herself.
Normally, Callie would be all over it, running her mouth, giving Violet every single detail about what was going on, if something was bothering her, everything. With this, she was having some difficulty. It was silly really. She let out a sigh, “Ya know my friend Richard right?” She said, knowing full well that Violet knows exactly who he was. “He’s just been goin’ through a lot.” She felt herself fighting back tears.

Laughing softly, Violet gave Callie a smile. "I know. 'N he's allowed'ta work right now, but he can't do as much as he's used to. Has to work back up to it slowly, that sort'a thing." She explained, the words soft. Smile growing, Violet couldn't help but reflect on the time she'd spent back home. "It was real nice. Austin came back'ta help 'round the place. I got'ta celebrate my birthday with everyone too. It was sweet, kept I wish it didn't need'ta go up for the reason I did." She admitted, tone laced with a hint of sadness. But Violet's own feelings were pushed aside when she saw something was bothering Callie.
Eyes observing, Violet heard the defensiveness in Callie's voice. Mouth closed, Violet didn't say anything but the worry was still prominent in her features. Gaze noted the difficulty Callie seemed to be having with speaking her mind. It was rare enough that Violet knew this was serious. Head nodding, Violet remembered Richard from some of her conversations with Callie. Expression softening with sympathy, Violet couldn't help but notice the tears. Callie's concern was obvious. "You don't need'ta go into detail if it's just between the two 'a you." She said, voice gentle and sincere. "There anythin' you think I could do'ta help?"

Callie returned a smile. She listened quietly as Violet spoke about her daddy and being back home. It was odd. It had been so long since she had seen or even spoken to her own parents. Even her brother. Although she had come to love and accept Kalispell and the people here as her home and family, and for that she was beyond grateful. “Well, I’m sure your daddy is a strong man and he’ll be right back to his old self soon.” She said reassuringly. Violet spoke about her time home, but her eyes said it all. The happiness of being home and seeing her family, the sadness of the situation. “That sounds real lovely Vi. But don’t be thinkin’ you’ll be getting’ away with not celebratin’ here!” She said as her smile grew into a smirk.
She knew she was being a bit strange, standoffish even. She didn’t mean to be, not to Violet. It just further proved how much of struggle this was for her to actually talk about. Everything she had told herself to cope with it hadn’t worked. She thought she had accepted it, but in that moment, with Violet’s eyes on her she was beginning to think otherwise.
“I’m just really confused Violet. I ain’t never felt like this before.”

Laughing heartily and smiling, Violet shook her head. "I have no doubt in my mind 'bout that, Callie. My Ma will have'ta watch 'n make sure he doesn't try'ta get back to his old self too early!" She replied, voice light. Patience wasn't exactly a virtue her Pa had. Violet had a feeling her Ma would have her work cut out trying to keep her Pa in line and not hurt himself. "I ain't opposed'ta celebratin' again, long as we keep it small." She said, tone sweet. The fact Callie mentioned celebrating again warmed Violet's heart, but she didn't want to make it that big of an event.
Feet moved and soon they were sitting. The contrast from the happy feeling only a few moments ago was startling. Heart breaking, Violet truly hated seeing her sister go through this kind of situation. Callie's face, as far as Violet was concerned, was far better off with smiles and happiness. Expression softening and concern prevalent, Violet listened to Callie speak. "Well, what're you feelin'? Analyzin' it might do some good." Violet offered, the words soft and caring.

Callie let out a soft chuckle. A warm feeling spread across her body, happiness, relief, everything was good. She could only imagine her father resisting to rest and wait as long as he was supposed to. She thought of her own daddy. He would be the opposite, accepting all the pity that he could and loving every minute of it. Her father was a hardworking man, but if he could ever have a few days off let alone a few weeks he’d be milking it for all he could get.
“Small. Of course.” She said with a bit of sarcasm. Callie wasn’t sure if she could do small, but if that’s what Violet wanted, that is what she would get.
All of the happiness and good news seemed to leave the room as soon as they sat. Callie felt heavy, and didn’t want to make this a bigger deal than it was. She could handle this. Right? She wanted to talk about it, about everything, but she was scared. Not of what Violet would think, but of what she might realize.
She sighed. “I ain’t ever thought about it Vi. Not ‘til his momma—“ She stopped for a moment, trying to fight back the tears. She thought back to the last time she saw her. “His momma was the one ta bring it up. I know I kissed him, and I shouldn’t have ‘cause he had a girlfriend and ta be honest I-I don’t know why I even done it. But I was fine, I really was. Didn’t think nothin’ of it. Until she said it.” Her accent more prominent as it was every time she started talking faster. Once she started it was hard for her to stop. “You know. He’s a friend of mine. He is. A really good one too. I knew it the moment we met. But I didn’t think nothin’ of it Vi. I didn’t.” She stopped for a moment. He mind racing. All the time they had spent together, everything they’ve shared and been through. All of it was playing in her head like a slideshow.
Callie took a deep breath, trying to steady herself. It didn’t help much. “I didn’t think nothin’ of it, ‘til his momma. And then, ya know what and then he had to go and kiss me, but ya know that don’t mean a thing Vi. Ya know, ‘cause he was in the hospital and it doesn’t count.” She wasn’t sure how to feel after getting out it all out. It was almost as if she was trying to argue with herself, trying to prove that what she was feeling was true, even after the fact that she thought she had accepted it.
She kept her head low, not wanting to look at Violet. There was more. “His momma asked me how long I’ve been in love with him. Vi, I ain’t in love. I can’t be. Right?” A tear rolled down her cheek, she couldn’t hold them back anymore. “Vi. His momma. She…she’s gone.” She felt her chest twitch with pain. Callie couldn’t fight it anymore, she started crying and reached out for Violet wrapping her arms around her. She couldn’t be strong anymore.

Sitting down in that room, Violet felt the air shift. Finally Callue started talking, and Violet did nothing but listen. Eyes forward and ears open, Violet took in every word Callie said. Most of these things Violet knew, but she still listened. Hand holding, Violet kept her powers at a minimum now. Looking at Callie, she knew the girl needed to get things off her chest. Heart aching, Violet felt tears come to her own eyes as Callie went on. Seeing her sister in such a state of dismay was terrible.
Oh Callie...
Attention given, Callie finally got to the end. She mentioned Richard's Ma saying they were in love, and eyes widened as a single tear rolled down Callie's face. Soon more came and Callie enveloped Violet in a hug. Grip tightening, Violet hugged her right back. Tears fell from her own eyes at seeing her sister cry, and she gently pat the girl's back and held her. Powers initially subdued, Violet gave Callie some time to get everything out of her system. Eventually she strengthened them, letting the hormones leak into the girl and increase production inside Callie.
"It's ok... It's ok..." Violet murmured, voice gentle and caring. "Callie don't you fret 'bout this love business. Love comes in so many ways, 'n not all of it is romantic. Now I know you love Richard dearly as a friend, the same way I love you dearly as a sister. That's absolutely fine. 'N you can take your time figurin' out what your feelin's for him are. Two kisses don't mean too much, 'cause sometimes things happen." Violet continued, tone calming and soft. "'I'm sorry about Richard's Ma. Mah heart goes out'ta him." She admitted, the words sad and honest. "But one thing I know is that he's got one of the best people I've ever met as a friend. But you don't always have'ta be strong Callie. You're only human. A wonderful human with amazin' abilities, but at your core a human still. Somethin' like this ain't easy on anyone. Sometimes we all need'ta cry. That don't make you weak."
