Violet “Vi” Coustic
FACE CLAIM: Kate Tunstall
---------------------------------
AGE: 24
GENDER: Female
ORIENTATION: Generally not into romance as a whole from either side of the fence
POSITION: Stable Hand
POWER: Soothing Touch
Has the ability to calm and put someone into a peaceful state via touch. Is done because Vi produces a vast amount of the hormone oxytocin which is then transferred through skin contact. Basically oozes the hormone out of her skin constantly. Can’t be turned off, but it can be increased or decreased to a certain amount through focus. Also, when she touches, she makes the receiver's body produce more of the hormone as well.
Leads to calmness and increased affection for Violet from whomever she touches. Also reduces aggression and increases affability and friendliness. Level of calm, lack of aggression, affability, and affection depends on how much she subdues/strengthens her power, and length of time skin contact is retained. Slight chance for addiction to form in person experiencing her power. Threat of addiction increases as power is strengthened, and decreases as power is subdued. Threat of addiction also increases with prolonged exposure/skin contact.
LIMITATIONS:
Can’t be turned off
Clothing can prevent the hormone transfer and increased oxytocin production in the person she touches. If there is no skin-on-skin contact the effects won’t be felt
Can subdue power enough so it takes 30 minutes for touched person to be completely calmed. However, takes same amount of time to drain her and cause negative symptoms to occur
Can increase power enough so it takes 5 minutes for touched person to be completely calmed. However, takes 10 minutes to drain her and cause negative symptoms to occur
Normal amount takes roughly 15-20 minutes to completely calm a person without strengthening or subduing power
Requires skin contact (constant) for hormones to be transmitted and produced in another person. Once skin contact is removed, feelings persist for a time before fading. Period of time before effect of power fades depends on strength of power (If she strengthened or subdued it) and amount of time skin contact is maintained
Easiest transfer/use of power is in hands and lips, but all of Vi’s skin secretes the hormone and causes increased hormone production in another person on contact
More skin contact lessens the amount of time needed to completely calm a person
SIDE-EFFECTS (For Vi) (If strains self by strengthening or subduing power):
Headaches
Nausea
Increased Heart rate
Shaking
Vomiting
Loss of consciousness
SIDE-EFFECTS (For others)
Normal Exposure:
Increased affection for Violet
Peaceful state
Increased affability
Decreased aggression
Prolonged Exposure:
Chance of Addiction to powers
Withdrawal symptoms (Similar to withdrawal symptoms from drug addiction)
Rare chance for affection bordering on obsession with Violet
Dear Journal,
It’s been a while hasn’t it? I think my last entry was when I left all those years ago. Guess I’ve got quite a bit of catching up to do. Let’s start from the beginning then (a very good place to start).
So the last time I was home was when I got my powers. Don’t think I ever wrote down what happened. See I didn’t even realize it had “activated” or whatever they called it. Think it was when I was about 14. Life was going on like normal. I’d work with the animals, go to school, pick up Austin, have our little tv time together. Everything was good. Course, I had noticed the animals seemed to be real calm around me, even more than usual. Even old Bucksy, that foul tempered stallion we had. It was something like 18 days or so after I noticed the slight difference when all of the sudden this man appeared on our property.
He was something called a recruiter, and asked Pa if he could sit down with me and talk. Pa wasn’t too thrilled, and neither was Ma. We all sat down in the kitchen though, and Austin was listening on top of the stars. The man told me I was a mutant and I had to go to this special school to learn more about my powers. Pa just stared at him as if he was saying he was about to steal one of the horses. He got real angry, and Ma and I tried to calm him down.
Let me tell you, Journal, I was skeptical the whole time. A man comes in, telling me I’ve got powers? Course I didn’t believe him. However, when I tried comforting Pa and wanted to calm him down, I noticed something. You know how much he can get himself into a lather over the smallest things. Especially when it’s big things like a stranger trying to take me away somewhere and telling me I’m some mutant. But I swear on Grandma’s grave that only a minute after I was holding his arm with Ma to get him to sit and calm, he did. Ma and I were surprised. He was still angry, but he wan’t yelling or looking like he was going to take the man’s head off. He even took my hand and held it while the man started talking.
The man was real calm to whole time, and said he could prove it. Could prove I was a mutant. He asked if we had any angry natured animals on the farm, and I mentioned Bucksy. Pa seemed reluctant, but actually got up and took us all to the stables. On the way out I saw Austin poking his head out and had to gesture for him to stay hiding. No telling how much trouble he’d get in if Pa found him creeping around while all this was happening.
So we went to the stables and found old Bucksy in his stall. He looked real unhappy to see some stranger. His ears were back and he started kicking the stall wall. Pa was about to calm him but the man said I should do it. Pa looked like he was going to get angry again, but my Ma and I calmed him down. Besides, I was starting to get curious. The man told me I should just focus on trying to soothe Bucksy like I had tried on my Pa back in the house. I didn’t know why he had to tell me that, but I headed in the stall and tried getting Bucksy to stop kicking. He was real agitated. Ma and Pa wanted me to get out of there, but I’ve always had a curiosity that could get me into a bit of trouble. I wanted to see if the man was right.
It took a while, but I finally got my hands on Bucksy without him biting me or hitting me with his hooves. I shushed him and just pat him and everything, focusing on calming him down before he reared up again. He did. It surprised everyone, but especially Pa. After a few minutes, Bucksy had stopped bucking and just stood there. When I pet his head, he even nuzzled me. I don’t think he’s ever done something like that to any of us.
While Ma and Pa were shocked, the man explained that my power could soothe people and animals. I had to believe him now. Pa still didn’t believe him, but Ma did. Apparently her cousin was a mutant like I was. She just never thought that could happen to one of her kids.
I’m not going to write about what saying goodbye was like. It was a real painful process. Austin was torn up when I came back inside and told him. We just sat there for a while, hugging and crying. My power came in handy that day for everyone but me. I’m glad though. There wasn’t as much trouble when I had to pack my bags and head out for my new school.
It was called Bellefonte Academy. It was a real nice school, with some other kids who were “special” like me. I have to confess, Journal, that I was mighty nervous when I got there. You know what my old school was like. I’ve never been to a big one, and especially not one as fancy as the Academy. I’d staple in a few pictures of the school, but I don’t have any on me at the moment. It was real nice. The kids were nice too. Some were stuck up like I expected kids to be like at fancier schools, but others were about as down to earth as me.
Learning there was fun, but pretty hard. I wasn’t as high up in education as some of the others, so the actual classes were challenging. But you know how much I like a challenge. Learning to control my ability was hard work too. Turns out I can’t actually turn it off, but I can damper it down so it doesn’t work so fast. I can also make it work faster like I did for Pa and Bucksy. Doing either of that makes me feel all weak and sick like a pup though. I try to avoid doing that too much if I can.
Turns out there can be bad side effects for others too. This one boy named Drake ended up getting addicted to my power. We were friends and we’d cuddle and slap each other on the back while cracking jokes and bantering. It was real nice. However, he started getting a little obsessed with my power, and depressed and all if he didn’t get his “fix,” as it was called. Eventually the workers at Bellefonte had to separate us and help Drake through dealing with withdrawal like he was some drug addict.
I’ll admit Journal, I was scared. I didn’t want to do something like that to people. I like making people relax and all, but I’d hate for them to be addicted to me and go through something like that. After Drake got out of the therapy, we talked again but things had changed. I learned all I could to help me with my powers after that. Once I finished the high school studies and stayed an extra year just for my powers, I left and went home. I think I was around 19 when that happened.
It’s been a couple years now since then. I’ve just been working with Pa and Ma and the animals again. I visited plenty when I was still at the Academy, but I think they were happy I was finally staying. Austin was super excited. He grew so much too! He looked a lot like Pa. All big and bulky. The girls at his school loved him. He even had a girlfriend when I came back home. Imagine that, my little brother having his own gal. He’s still got her even now, 5 years later. I honestly think they might go the distance, but I don’t tell him that. I don’t want to jinx it.
Speaking of growing, I should tell you I’ve grown too. My growth spurt hit back at the Academy. Now I’m hitting 5’10” and just barely managed to top Ma. Austin and Pa still beat me, but I’m fine with that. I look a lot more like Ma now back when she was my age. I’m glad: Ma was always real pretty. She still is. I just hope I can look anywhere near as good now and when I get on in my years.
I should also talk about my new job. I got an offering from the Academy all of the sudden to come back and work as a stable hand. I was a little confused, if I’m going to be honest with you. I hadn’t had any college education, and I left as soon as I could. But then again I guess I don’t need much of a college education to work the stables. That and I figure they know about my history with horses and animals, considering they have to know all about my family and such and where I came from. I don’t mind it, but Pa and Ma are a little upset by the news. With Austin going off to college next year, they’re worried about how the animals will be and how they’d manage taking care of them. My power really helps me with the animals. Course Ma and Pa haven’t said a word of this, but I can tell. Pa always fidgets with his hands when he gets nervous, and Ma just gets this look in her eye.
I got someone to help I knew from the Academy. Name’s Chester. He was real nice, and loved animals. Like me he left early, but we kept each other’s numbers. I called him up and offered him the job working on the farm. He took it in an instant and flew over from Chicago. He’s here now, and I think Pa’s warming up to him. He loves the animals, especially the horses. I think that helps. Austin likes him too. They’re a funny pair together, almost like brothers. Chester will love it here, and I have a feeling he’ll soften the blow of both me and Austin being gone. I’ll still visit, I promise. I wouldn’t be able to stay away without a few returns to see the family anyways. I’d miss them too much.
Anyways, I think that’s about it. Not much else to tell you, Journal. Sorry I haven’t written in you much. It’s been ages since my last entry. I’ll take you with me to the Academy and write in you more, I swear. I’m also taking one of the horses. She a big Shire, and I named her Beau. She’s such a sweet thing, even with how enormous she is. Pa wants me to have her, probably to take a little bit of home with me. I’ve got a picture of her I’ll staple in. Here’s hoping we both get a warm welcome back at the Academy.
