Gabriel let Poppy go when she reached out for tissues. Her request made him sigh. At least she wasn't denying the death. She just didn't want to continue being upset.
He couldn't think of anything on the spot so he shrugged and looked at the kitchen, where the smells coming from it distracted him a little.

A small smipe crept onto her lips. Okay so it was not something she was thinking off but it was something at least. Poppy nodded her head and followed her friend into the kitchen.
Violet was busying herself and the smell was hypnotizing. "What's happening in here?" Her voice squeaked out meekly. Eyeing a plate of muffins on the table, the nineteen year old took one. "I hope you don't mind, I heard food helps with this kind of thing."
Feeling teary eyed again, Poppy brushed her eye before the tears could fall again. Then her fingers worked their way through the wrapper and she took her first bite. She plastered on a forced smile as she looked up at Gabe. "You have a good cook here."

Violet was preparing for dinner. It was one of Gabriel's favourite Asian dishes. It was simple enough with little ingredients but Violet somehow managed to make it smell, taste and look amazing. "Stirfried glass noodles." She responded with a smile. "Gabe used to demand it every other week when he was younger." The affectionate smile she threw at him had him chuckling as he slid up the island countertop.
"Toss me one." Gabriel said after Poppy mentioned food. Her comment about Violet had him grinning. "Vi is a lot more than a good cook." He said before turning his attention on Poppy. "You're staying for dinner and then I'm sending you back to the Academy. You shouldn't have been out in the woods alone in the first place."

The young woman watched the interaction between the two gratefully. The thought of a little obnoxious Gabe demanding for stir fried glass noddles made the grieving girl giggle. It took her mind off her dead pet for a bit and she welcomed the distraction.
She tossed one of the muffins to her friend as intructed. Gladly, she dug into her own muffin. What Gabe said next sounded very big brotherly, but she supposed he was right. Although it did bring up the sour memory.
However, Poppy kept her mouth shut on how technically she was not really alone at the lake since that wolf girl was there. But she was hoping she did not have to go back to her empty dorm that night, without Coca Cola... Was it worth it to debate on it? Well it could not hurt to try, right?
"Hey, Gabe, do you know anywhere I could go tonight? I mean, the academy, without Coca, I just..." She bit her lip and shrugged, hoping he would get what she meant.

Gabriel was a giving person by nature. Seeing how distraught Poppy was brought out the big brother in him and he devised a plan. It wasn't the most ideal but it would have to do on such short notice.
"Vi, could you stay here with her? Take care of her for the night?" Gabriel asked quietly after he approached the older mutant. Violet looked at Gabriel with a soft smirk. "Need you ask? I'll take care of her don't worry. You and Daniel will be okay at the Purcell?" Violet's hand went up to pat Gabriel's cheek and the man smiled softly. "They've never given me anything but love. We'll be fine."
Gabriel went up to Poppy, leaning against the countertop. "You can stay here. Violet will take care of you. Just let me know once you're ready to go back to the campus."

The girl smiled appreciatively at her friend for offering the place to her. At least she knew she would not be wandering the streets just because she did not want to return to the academy. "Thank you," she informed the two before biting more into the muffin.
To say she was relieved was the very least. Poppy was utterly grateful that she did not have to return to her lonely dorm that night. Only hours after the passing of her pet, it served as another reminder of what she had loss and how unbelievable the circumstances were.
After the delicious dinner made by Violet, she waited as the sleeping arrangements were prepared. "What a way to start the new year, huh," she said to herself out loud. "Ugh, sorry." Why am I bringing this up again? "Thanks again. With Violet, I'm sure I'm in good hands. Where are you going off again?"

Glad she didn't protest, Gabriel was more than happy to continue on with the evening. With Daniel and Violet as the buffers, dinner wasn't as awkward as it had been before.
Dinner was all but licked clean and when Violet went to clean up, Gabriel went to his room to grab his duffel and filled it with the things he needed, making sure he got extra just in case Poppy needed more time in his apartment. Coming out of his room, Poppy's statement had him sighing softly and giving her a sympathetic glance. He couldn't help it.
"Yeah, Violet has taken care of me since I was a kid." His glance moved over to the kitchen and he smiled affectionately. "The Purcell. It's a few blocks away from here. Promise to call me when you're ready to go back to the Academy." Gabriel said before calling Daniel out.
"Vi, we're leaving." Gabriel called out before turning to Poppy. "Do you need anything else before I go?"

The nineteen year old nodded. "Promise. I uh have a class tomorrow anyways," she said, giving out a halfhearted laugh. Was it selfish that she was actually glad she could stay at Gabe's even though it meant the man would have to find another sleeping quarter.
Anything else? He had already given her his apartment for the night. Before he could protest, Poppy quickly leaned in to give him a hug. "I know what you've said about close contact, but thank you. Really. Seriously."
After burying her pet, Gabe was the first person she turned to because she knew she could. Just like he had said seven years ago, he would be there for her. Especially now when she needed him and for that she loved him for it. He was probably one of only few people who truly knew how important Coca Cola was to her. "You're awesome, ya know that."
And then she looked at him before her eyes travelled down to his lips. His eyes. His lips. Poppy angled her head and leaned in, softly placing her lips over his.

Gabriel let Poppy give him another hug, she probably just needed the comfort. He wasn't going to push her away, not right then.
"I'll give you a free pass this time." He chuckled before shrugging nonchalantly when she said that he was awesome. "Ah well, you know. I have my moments." He slung his duffel over his shoulder and before he knew it, the young woman was kissing him. In a panic, he pulled back and placed a hand on Poppy's shoulder, pushing her away from him.
"Poppy," he started, his mind going to his job and how he so wanted to keep it and this was not going to look well on him. "I...I'm going. Just...Violet! Look after her, please." He looked at her, his expression filled with a mix of disgust, pity and desperation.
"Daniel, we're going." He barked as he walked towards the front door. He knew his reaction was a touch overly dramatic but at the end of the day, he was a school staff and she was a student. Sure, she had just gone through a traumatic experience but that was no excuse.
He was beginning to realise that he had made a mistake of letting her get too close to him. He just hoped he wasn't going to lose his job because of this.
Once Daniel was behind him, he left the penthouse, shaking his head.

Once she was pushed away and her widened eyes met his, it finally dawned on Poppy Lockwood at what she had exactly done. "Oh my..." she whispered as her hand flew to her lips that not long ago had been on another's. Just not any another. It had been Gabe's.
"Err, I'm..." Before the nineteen year old could form a coherent thought or produce at least a sentence, her friend was already making moves to leave. It was like he could not get out of there away from her fast enough. After that, the front door slammed shut and Poppy stood in the middle of the living room feeling a little more than lost.
What just happened?
She did not dare to look at Violet. So after thanking her for setting the bed, she bid her goodnight before closing the door so she would be left alone in the room. The first thing that caught her eye was her phone.
Quickly, she reached for it. Scrolling through her contacts, she tapped on Gabe's. The picture on the screen was way different than the one she saw earlier after she had kissed him. Oh god, I kissed Gabe. With that thought in mind, she typed out a message to him. Once she read over it, Poppy deleted majority of it and sent a short one that she thought was suitable? appropriate?
To: Gabe I'm sorry.
