"I think that's natural though; putting up with teenage behaviour. Knowing that it'll all be a phase that gets worked through." James answered, though there was the added level of the whole powers aspect. It was yet another thing to consider with the possibility of becoming parents; something that could be worked through another day. At another time.
"It's something that you never expect as a parent, I can imagine." He added onto his previous point. Afterall, there weren't any instruction manuals on how to deal with blood manipulation or enhanced hearing as a parent. Especially ones who lacked an ability or any knowledge of it.
Eye contact was initiated; he didn't move. A look of surprise crossed James' features at the unexpected statement. His heart was quick to falter but equally as quick to recover. "Yeah, sure." He replied with a nod. Meeting her mom? Surely he could handle that; his ego was quick to tell him so. "Christmas works. We're not really huge on holidays so we don't have to worry about upsetting them."

Families were daunting things to have to deal with. Though her own was incredibly small, she could still be certain that one person might as well have been an army when dealing with a person's mother. She might not have ever brought a person home before, but she was sure there would be the obvious level of scrutiny. After all, it proved just how important things were. It was real.
"If you want to, yeah." She replied then, nodding her head a few times. For Ella, instances like these were the kind she didn't want to pressurise. He didn't need to feel forced to do anything.
"But if you're not up for it - if you're not ready - that's okay, too. I don't want you to feel like you have to do anything." She explained quickly. Because the absolute worst thing she could do was put him in any kind of forced meeting with her only family. It was bound to be awkward either way.

Visiting Ella's mother during the holiday season was something else; it had to signify the meaning and milestone that they had reached in their relationship. It was serious, and the thought did cause James to worry a little bit. But not enough to refuse her offer.
"Yeah, I'd like to meet her." James replied, genuinely. Because that was the next step in the natural progression of the relationship. Because he wanted to.
His gaze remained fixated and steady on her, as he shook his own head in reply. "No, that's okay." James replied, pushing himself off of the counter. There was no pressure, just the offer, and for that he was grateful. Because Ella was always quick to consider his feelings in situations that had the possibility to overwhelm. "So long as you're ready as well, for me to meet her." He added, in case she had other thoughts. "It'll be nice."

There was even more relief to wear when James agreed to meet Ella's mother. She literally exhaled a sigh to accentuate the feeling. Though they were together and the way they felt was evidently strong, parents were still incredibly daunting. Meeting her ex-boyfriend's family a Christmas ago was utter proof of that. She was sure, however, that they would have much better luck.
"Well yeah. She's like, the only family I have." She explained then, like it really needed to be said. At the very least it made it clear that there was no one else. No brothers or sisters. No father-like figures or anything of the sort. There was only the singular. Perhaps that said more about her than she would have liked. "And we're serious. Serious enough to like... Do that."
Next step. A step they might have missed, but here they were now.
"What about you? What's your family situation like?" She asked, quickly realising she also had no idea.

Her sigh rang loudly in his ears; the extra few seconds that provided a form of reassurance that they were progressing in the right direction. Meeting parents was supposed to be a terrifying concept for any couple, no matter what stage they were at in the relationship. But James was confident enough that nothing major could go wrong.
He nodded. Just Ella and her mother; a small family, but still. James didn't know if it was a relief to have to only meet one person or not. Because there was the possibility that she wouldn't like him.
Not a high possibility, but still one all the same.
"Oh, yeah." James replied, turning to face her. "Just myself, my mom and my dad. I don't talk to them as often as I should." He admitted. Especially as the only child. "I've told them about you, but we can go visit them after the holidays."

Ella almost wanted to laugh when he expressed that he didn't talk to his parents much. She had herself landing in the exact same boat, which she supposed made it easier. Concerned eyes took in the face that glanced back at her, trying to gather what it might have been he was thinking about before she opened her mouth and inevitably ruined a moment.
"Do you think they'll like me?" She asked honestly. And she knew before he spoke that his answer would be yes, which was both incredibly cliche and likely untrue. At least, as far as she considered herself. There was very little to hold onto, and as such, there couldn't be all that much to dislike or like.
"Because my mom's not really overprotective. And you're pretty hard to dislike. You're charming." He made impressions wherever he went. He probably made friends the same way, but as far as she still knew, such a portion of his life was reality over impending perception.

James' eyes met hers, almost ready to ask Ella if everything was alright. But he already knew the answer; she would say yes, even if that wasn't the case. Even if there was something on her mind.
A look of mild surprise and confusion crossed his features. Her question had caught James off guard, which was hard to do. But it was a question that had to be asked when it came to meeting parents. "Yeah, of course they'll like you." James assured her. "What's not to like about you?" He asked, the question slipping out before he had the thought to filter it. To be fair, it was more of a rhetorical statement than a question.
"Some would disagree." James said with a slight shrug. He tried to play off his nerves casually without giving away any indication. "I... I have never met anyone's parents before." He admitted, eyes still locked on her face. "So let's hope the charm still works."
