Just A Test

[Roxana Strix]

Roxana had easily gotten a hold of Evelyn Louise Conner class schedule without any real effort on her part as she headed to the class Evelyn would currently be in. Her Roxana thought that she was never going to have to actually deal with a Conner at all. Not that she had a problem with the Conner family, but she did not personally view them with any significance. Yes, they had money and the family itself was successful but there had only been a few times where their names would show up for her to take a look at a few things.

Yet now she had been asked to actually test the Evelyn Conner, which meant that she was possibly going to end up being one of Roxana's targets. Or there was something that SIGUARD just wanted to make sure of which still meant that something had happened that caused them to have this slight moment of interest in the girl and not her brother. Evelyn's class was about to end, so Roxana waited until. Standing outside the door and leaning back against the wall as she wondered what SIGUARD was thinking or what they had planned. As students started to file out, Roxana slipped right on in and went directly up to Evelyn.

"Greetings, Evelyn. I'm Roxana and I was wondering if you were free few a few minutes to help me out with something." Roxana said, tempted to be friendly but instead remained her usual default no real emotions-self. She was not in the mood for games and she figured with what she heard about Evelyn it was best to be direct with the girl. Easier for Roxana. She already knew the girl was free after this class in terms of not having any other classes, but she didn't know if they girl wanted to run off home as soon as possible.

Her name being announced by a voice that wasn't at all familiar had Evelyn's head jerking up. Her brown eyes narrowed as she looked at the girl. Yes, she knew all to well who the girl in question was - it was her job to, after all, but why she came forward on such friendly terms, had Evelyn's stoic expression hardening. "That's Miss. Conner to you. Miss. Strix," she replied evenly as she pushed herself off of her table. Her slender fingers found their way to her hips where they rested idly. Gathering her things, Evelyn didn't bother casting the blonde another look - not yet anyways.

"And what, exactly, is it that I can help you with?" She wondered if this was about the side business she and her brother had, though, most people approached her brother about that. He was the social genius after all, whereas Evelyn much preferred sticking to the background. Finally, once her things had been gathered and her bag packed, Evelyn finally turned towards the girl again, her eyes narrowing as she gave the taller frame a quick once-over. "As you can imagine, I have a very busy schedule and don't take kindly to people wasting my time." She might not have been very busy right now, but that hardly changed the simple fact.

She wondered briefly what had pressed the girl to even consider using her first name. Anyone who'd heard about Evelyn knew she was cold, calculating and formal - to the smallest detail. There were few people she actually allowed to use her last name, and even less of those were people she hadn't even talked to before.

They were going to go the very formal route then it seemed, Roxana was fine with that. They were both in college and adults so there was nothing wrong with calling each other by their last names. "Miss Conner then." Roxana replied back simply. She was not looking forward to dealing with someone with this kind of personality, but she was used to it. With the people she often spent her time around, this was nothing new. Granted this person didn't really know her and they were not friends so there was no 'bond' or general understanding between the two of them yet.

That was nothing to be concerned with for the time being, best get right to business. Evelyn's response made it clear that getting right to the point was in the interest of both of them. "I would like your assistance with something. I have the item that I would like you to use your power on and tell me as much as you can about it." Roxana said, as she reached into the inside of her jacket and pulled out an old school pocket watch. It looked like one that had been made back when pocket watches were just coming out and the latest fashion for those who needed to know the time and by the engraving one could tell it had been owned by someone wealthy.

"I understand, this should not take very long at all. Just need you to use your power on it and tell me everything you can relate to it. We can even go somewhere else if you prefer and as soon as you are done I will leave and you can return to your busy scheduled." Roxana said, still speaking in her usual manner as she stood there. She had expected the girl to be taller, but then again she was used to people being shorter than her and apparently she was not even done growing. Roxana already knew everything there was to know about the watch, but this was a test for Evelyn after all.

It had been owned by several people over the years, all very wealthy, and all from the same family. The pocket watch had been passed down from father to son over and over for several generations until it got to its last owner. He received it when he was already an older man, having never fully been approved by his father do to wanting to be a doctor instead of sticking with the family business. So he had not received the watch until he was in his fifties or so when his father died in his nineties. He did not own the watch for long however, because while he was in his study late at night doing a bit of reading he was killed. Shot in the left side of his head while he had paused to check the time on that very pocket watch.

Staring at the girl, Evelyn's lips pursed into a tight line. She remained perfectly quiet as the girl spoke, and patiently waited for her to finish saying her piece. So, she wanted something. People usually did, but surely, even this one had to know that even Evelyn's help came at a price. She was hardly the kind of person who ran around helping others from the goodness of her heart - especially not when it involved using her power.

The only person who she ever did that for free for was her brother, and even he rarely asked. Even so, Evelyn had to admit that it was curious, how this girl so upfront seemed to think that Evelyn even wanted to help. The way she spoke indicated that there wasn't even a "can you", but rather "you have to".

"I understand that it's something you need, Miss. Strix, but this still sounds like you're wasting my time." She looked at the girl, her eyebrow quirking. "I hope you realize that I'm hardly the person who helps others out of the goodness of my heart." She sighed then as she shook her head. "I fail to see, exactly, what's in it for me."

Roxana should have expected as much that she would run into this sort of problem when it came to testing the girl. This is why she hated this aspect of her job, having to deal with people outside of just looking after them or killing them. She was half tempted to just walk away now and report back that Evelyn would be useless to their organization. She had already felt that the girl was useless to them already, and she was not in the mood to have to play the game for too long to get the girl to just show just how far she could go with her ability.

Rox did let out a sigh, not bothering to hide it, and knew that she did have to at least put some more effort into it. That way she could report back accurately and they could either have someone else handle the matter or just drop whatever interest they had now. "I understand that, but I was not completely sure what someone such as yourself would want in exchange for a simple task. I figured since it was such a simple task that would not take long, it would not be any effort for you to try. Clearly I was wrong however." Roxana said. She phrased things the way she did on purpose, spinning the pocket watch around a few times.

"What is it that you would like in exchange?" Roxana then asked after a moment to let her words sit out there. She figured the girl would at least have an idea in mind and would not suggest something that was not worth the actual exchange. Rox was willing to take a few offers for the exchange, but she was in no mood to play too many games. She had things to do after all and if this girl was going to be too much of a hassle, this she was just going to leave it.

Rolling her eyes in response, Evelyn's head shook as she took a step away; she didn't see why this girl even bothered. Evelyn had a reputation as it was, and the blonde would have been better off if she had paid mind to that, instead of wasting both their time. No, Evelyn wasn't, nor would she ever be the kind of person that helped or showed off her ability from the goodness of her heart. Though, she was wrong though; it might not have taken much effort to use her ability, but it did come with its downsides. They weren't all very pleasant either.

The answer to her question was simple though; "Information," she replied. "Tell me why this is so important to you, and why you need me to do it." She was hardly the only one at the school with this kind of power. It was obvious the blonde had approached her with some hidden intent, and Evelyn wanted to know what that was.

"This might surprise you, Miss. Strix, but unlike my brother, I'm not the kind of person who enjoys playing mindless games." She looked directly at her then. "Nor am I blind or stupid. Tell me what it is that you really need, and I might actually consider helping you and stop wasting both of our time beating around an imaginary bush." She was in no mood to deal with anyone's bullshit. She would judge the girl's answer and if she deemed it worthy, Roxana might actually find herself lucky.

A eye roll; how many people did she have to deal with that rolled their eyes? It was pretty much all girls that did it, but then again that made up most of her targets. She wished that there were some males with decent enough powers and personalities that would catch her organizations eye. Then again, people did seem to think that girls would one day rule the world and it made sense how they would be able to. They developed faster than boys, generally were pretty smart, and knew how to be very sneaky in order to get what they wanted.

Woman could do just as crazy things that a man could, so it was really hard to just write them off as weak as some people seemed to assume. Roxana should have been surprised that Evelyn wanted information, but from what she heard about the girl it didn't really. However; Roxana's life was all about secretes, so it was not like she could actually tell the girl that much. "It's not all the important to me, I'm just curious. It came into my possession and I wanted to know the story behind it because the guy who gave it to me said that there was death involved." Roxana didn't hesitate to tell the girl.

It was not really a lie. The watch was given to her, she had been told that there was murder involved in the watch; along with mostly everything about it, and she was curious in the sense she wanted to hear what Evelyn would be able to tell her about it. Roxana did smile just a little bit for a small moment as the girl explained that she was not like her brother. Rox knew that, she would not be here if the girl was like her brother.

"I just want my curiosity to be satisfied. I want to know more about this watch and I want to know more about you. You have one of those powers that could be seen as...basic, yet it has aspects to it that could be beneficial in the right hands." Roxana added. There, still not anything that was a real lie but not saying directly what she was here for.

Evelyn was tempted to point out that feeding the girl's curiosity wasn't enough of a reason for her to help out, but she figured the sooner she got this girl off her back, the sooner she'd be freed of this stupidity. Sighing, Evelyn reached her hand out for the watch. She didn't say anything; she didn't think she needed to. Her exasperated expression spoke volumes. It was obvious that it was tedious to her and she wanted nothing more than to get this task over with as soon as humanly possible.

Besides, at the end of the day, it wasn't like it would hurt her in any way, and if the girl was as curious about her power, she'd might find the blonde to become an useful asset in the future. Who knew?

Once her fingers curled around the watch, Evelyn's body froze. Brief flashes of several people passed before her eyes the instant her power kicked in. They all seemed to be incredibly wealthy, from looking at their clothes and their house. There was similar traits to be found on their faces, and it seemed as if they all belonged to the same family too, from the brief flashes of conversation she managed to pick up. The memories flooded back and forth, and her power didn't seem quite to settle on one memory. At least not at first. That often happened when she touched an object without searching for anything specific. All the owners had been male too, which told Evelyn it was the kind of thing that passed from generation to generation.

Then, the memories seemed to stop, showing an older man receiving the watch. There was a quick memory of some kind of quarrel between father and soon. It was obvious that the father didn't at all agree with the choices the son made to become a doctor. The memory moved again, showing the son receiving the watch as an older man again after his father dying. Then, the memory moved again, this time showing the man sitting in his study late at night, reading. He reached for the pocket watch, and while he was looking at it, a loud, flaring gun shot sounded, which threw Evelyn out of the memories, almost dropping the watch she was holding.

Blinking, she took a moment to regain her surroundings. She had probably been out for several minutes, or maybe even more, considering all the memories she'd been seeing. It was obvious she was a little thrown off - as she always was whenever she emerged from her frozen state. Finally, after a few minutes of regaining herself, she handed the watch over.

"It was owned by several people. All rich and fancy. It was given from son to son, all spread over various generations. The last one received it as an older man, because he lost contact with his father. They had a dispute because said son wanted to become a doctor, and his father didn't approve. Once the father died, the son got the watch. One night, he was shot in his study," she said, shrugging her shoulders as she quickly summarized what she'd been seeing. "He was shot in the left side of his side." She left out the part where the gun shot had pulled her out of the memory altogether.

It was obvious that the flood of memories had strained her. Reaching her hand out, she pressed it flat against the wall as she tried keeping herself standing. She hated when this happened, when she picked up more than one memory at once. It was exhausting, and it often overloaded her senses completely. It was a miracle that she hadn't passed out yet, although she could feel the dizzy spells.

Roxana was pleased that she got the girl to go ahead and do what she was there for, still not in the mood to play The Game. She got that the girl wanted information, but Roxana could not just give that sort of thing over, especially depending on what the girl wanted to know. She figured she could find another way to pay the girl back if she felt like she really needed something for her 'wasted' time. Rox was still all for the girl not bothering and that way she would not have to say that Evelyn would be useful to SIGURD.

"I will make up your wasted time in some way." Roxana assured the other girl as she allowed her to take the pocket watch. Roxana then fell silent and just focused on studying the girl, almost staring but she made sure to blink so it was not weird. She was making sure she committed how the girl looked, breathed, swallowed, and pretty much every detail there was to see as the Evelyn started to use her power. It was sometimes interesting to see how people were affected by their ability and how it worked for them.

Rox was pleased that it was not something that had her keeping her eyes open and them rolling to the back of her head. Since she was not in a rush, she was fine waiting for however ever long it took for Evelyn to come back out of her power trance there. Roxana of course was still looking at her, watching and waiting. She took back the watch and put it away back in the bag as she paid close attention as the girl explained what she had gotten from the watch. Everything seemed pretty standard, except when she brought up what direct the bullet even came from.

She had been able to see even that with clarity? Rox wondered if she might have been be to even see who had fired the bullet but she kept that too herself for now. "Well, thank you for that. It was very informative." Roxana said as she made several more mental notes on how the girl was behaving now that she had used her power. There was something there, and Rox was ready to lend her help but she had a feeling how things would go. Still, it did not hurt to try. "You should sit down. Can I get you anything? Water; perhaps something with sugar in it?" Rox asked a hint of concern in her voice for a tiny second.

Swatting her hand at the girl, Evelyn's head shook. She pressed the palm of her hand against the wall as her other hand came up to brush her hair away from her face. "No, it's fine," she commented dryly. After all, it would pass. It was uncomfortable, sure, but it wasn't going to kill her. She hadn't quite expected there to be as much information flooding, and it always threw her off. Blinking, Evelyn focused on her breathing. It took her a moment to allow all of her senses to return and become gradually more aware of the present surroundings.

Thankfully, years of having her ability had offered her some insight and ability to control these situations. It was simply the amount of information that made it so Evelyn needed a moment to gather herself and allow the present time to sink back into view. Taking a deep breath, her brown eyes moved over to the other girl, squinting slightly as she studied her. She wondered why on earth the blonde needed all this information, though, she had a sneaking suspicion that it was less about the watch, and more about Eve herself.

"You didn't seek me out simply for the watch, did you?" she asked, her brows furrowing as she kept her gaze on the girl. "If that's not it, then what? My power? My last name?" She was used to being approached because she was a Conner. Not as much her power, since few people dared to ask her for anything.

There was a hand swat and the assurance that she was fine. "If you are certain." Roxana responded back simply. She was not going to force her help on the girl if it was not wanted, it would be just a waste of time. The other girl had not become one of her targets just yet and she didn't feel any desire to have to protect the girl with her life. Then again, she just met her and it normally did take a little while before Roxana actually started to care about someone.

It took months for her to actually like Elsa and Ellen, and even longer to like them the way she did now. Lux was the only one that had Rox like her relatively quick. She stayed where she was however; just in case the girl changed her mind or looked like she was going to fall over at any second. Thankfully she seemed fine and recovering well enough to still hold a conversation as she yet again went back to wondering why Roxana asked for her to look into the pocket watch. "I did." Roxana said with a slight nod of her head. It was true that she really was just there to watch and see hoe Evelyn used her power.

There were more questions, ones that Roxana could not answer in truth all the way but she knew of a way to spin it. She didn't know if it would satisfactory for the other girl, but it was all Roxana could give her for the time being. "Your last name is more of deterrence then something that would lore me in, but at any rate I was interested in your power. Seeing if it was actually useful and how it worked for you. In other words, I am just interested in you and you alone in this current situation." Roxana informed her. There, she could say that much and it was not telling any lies, but it was not telling the whole truth either.

Squinting her eyes, Evelyn wasn't sure if she bought the story the blonde offered, but she supposed it didn't really matter at the end of the day. Whatever she needed her power for, save for the watch, she had to do a whole lot better than this. After all, if she'd come here to know more about her ability, Eve had a feeling it was more than a one time thing. Did she care? Of course not.

"Then I assume you've gotten what you came here for," she spoke, looking at the girl still. "Or is there more to this charade?" Not often did Eve encounter people who was interested in her as a person, completely disconnected from her last name. She wasn't sure whether or not that was a good thing, but people found out relatively quick that there was little to be found with her a single entity.

Ah well, at least the blonde wasn't asking about her and her brother's little side-business. Evelyn was rather surprised so few people knew, and that there was nothing more than rumors swirling about it, rather than stone cold proof. It was for the best, of course, but one would think these kids would be a little more observant.

"I have, but now my interest had been peeked." Roxana responded back, and she was being honest. Now she was starting to catch on as to why her organization would want this girl. She had the personality, the power, and the added bonus of having money. Of course Roxana knew of their little side projects that was less than stellar. It was part of why she didn't want anything to do with the siblings but she was trying to keep them as separate beings and not lump them together.

After all, Evelyn was clearly different then her brother and her organization did say they were interested in the girl and not her brother so there had to be something there. "Well I would like to get to know you better, but you did say you were a very busy woman." Roxana said, since she did assure the girl that she was free after she did what Roxana asked of her. The girl had held up her end of the deal so it was only fair that Roxana did the same.

"Would I be imposing too much to want to walk with you to your next destination? That way we could talk a bit more but I would not hold you up from your other engagements." Roxana suggested. There a compromise, that should work well enough for the other girl. If not, well then she was going to have to go about things with those who she was watching that were not aware of her.

She didn't know where this interest seemed to come from, and quite honestly, Evelyn wasn't sure if she really cared. That didn't mean all sense of manners had been lost on her, of course. Despite her bluntness, Evelyn was at the end of the day, raised to be a proper lady, and some of which had been lost, being around Alistair and her brother for too long, but at the end of the day, she was still her father's daughter. They both shared the same cold, calculating view on the world, whereas her brother was much more charming and approachable, like their mother.

The girl issued a request then, a compromise and Evelyn sighed. "Not at all," she said, nodding. After all, as long as she got to where she was supposed to be, nothing else truly mattered. She could hardly stop the girl from walking the same way. It was a free country, after all, and although she doubted this girl would follow her when she said no, she supposed this was one of these things better left attended to and ended as soon as possible.

"What is is that you'd like to know, Miss. Strix?" she asked as she started walking, tossing the blonde a quick glance to make sure that she was indeed following and not hanging around like some bafoon. She wondered briefly if it was her power, or something else entirely that had caught the girl's interest, but she supposed that at the end of the day, it didn't truly matter.

Roxana smiled a little for a small moment when Evelyn agreed that she could walk and talk to her while Eve would go to her destination. It worked out well that the other girl agreed to those terms, but Roxana figured that she would. Evelyn had quickly struck her as a woman who cared about manners, rules, standards, and codes. Perhaps in a different light considering the things she and her brother did, but she still had them. Roxana could respect that and so could her organization, which just added to Roxana's understanding as to why they wanted her to look into the girl.

Rox waited for Evelyn to move before she would follow behind the girl, off to the side a little. She made sure to leave plenty of space between them, enough that she was no in the other girl's personal space, and enough that they could hold a normal conversation without speaking too loudly. Roxana had already started to gather her thoughts before Eve asked her what it was that she wanted to know. What was it that Roxana didn't already know? What would be interesting to learn about the girl?

"The basics I suppose. What are you majoring in for college, how do you like life at Bellefonte Academy, and how do you feel about the past events that have gone on at the school?" Roxana asked. There, that was a good start. Each answer was asked for specific reasons and the answers she would get would help her better understand the way Eve thought. Once she understood that, she could get a proper feel and understanding for the other girl.
