So where was Poppy Lockwood on a fine Saturday morning less than two weeks after the death of her beloved pet? Not the lake that was for sure. Whilst that was most likely her favorite place ever, it still brought back haunting memories that she just was not ready to revisit yet.
Therefore, the nineteen year old changed her course and hiked up to the mountains instead. It did not offer her the sounds of the lapping waves that put her at ease most times but at least it did not bring up unwanted memories that had the power to get her all welled up with tears.
After ten minutes of aimless walking, the girl stopped when she heard bushes rustling from behind. Turning around, she saw a shadow though she could not make out the shape of it.
If it was a wolf, she swore she was going to lose it.

Well. What on earth was Lucy James doing in the middle of nowhere, on a mountain, of all things? Well, she wasn't entirely sure how to answer that kind of question. In fact, she'd started walking and somewhere along the road, she'd gotten completely lost in her own head... Right about that moment she'd copied some kid's power and bam. Here she was.
And she had no idea how to get back home. Heck, she didn't even know where she was.
"Wonderful," she said through clenched teeth. The power mimic wasn't really paying any attention to where she was going and before she could react (much), she was standing face to face with another, completely unknown, brunette.
Who looked as if she was expecting the devil to walk through the bushes.
"...Throw holy water on me, and I swear that pretty face of yours won't look so pretty anymore."

Wonderful. Just wonderful. For a brief moment, she expected for it to just show itself. However, if it was a wolf shape shifter, now then Poppy would really lose it. But that was highly unlikely to happen. What were the odds, right?
So when another girl walked through, the nineteen year old was relieved to say the very least. No wolves, today. That was a bright side. A small and lazy smile formed at what the other brunette said.
"Neither will yours be either, I bet." She chuckled. "So what brings you here?" she said with not much curiosity but since they were there already, might as well make small talk.
Cocking an eyebrow, Lucy found herself impressed at the witty response. A lazy grin formed on her lips and she issued a chuckle. "That's a really good question," she said with a sigh. "I guess you could say I didn't come volunatarily." After all, she still mimicked people's powers when she didn't want to. It had gotten a lot better, mind, but it wasn't even close to being perfect.
Jerking her thumb over her shoulder, Lucy shrugged. "I mimicked someone's power and got shipped off here. Betting it was some kind of teleportation or high speed power." She looked at the spot she'd come from and pursed her lips.

Ah, power mimicker. Poppy Lockwood found it pretty cool -- to be able to experience all types of powers. Seriously cool. But looking at the uncertain girl now, she doubted it was all fun and games especially when it ends you up somewhere unknown or have no clue as to how you got there. Like a slave to her own power.
The other brunette thought right. The brunette crossed her arms over her chest and gave a shrug. "Yeah, I'm out here cause I'm still reluctant to go back to the place where my cat died," Poppy replied nonchalantly. Which surprised her. The words came out easily and she did not actually felt like sobbing. Huh. She was liking being in the other girl's presence.
The blunt way of which the girl presented her own reasoning for being here had the power mimic laughing. "You- what?" she asked again, needing to hear the words again to actually believe them. It sounded so incredibly child-like and stubborn, Lucy couldn't quite help but see the humor of it - and she doubted the girl would like it very much. Well, most people didn't particularly enjoy it when someone laughed over the loss of a pet, but come on!
Thankfully, the conversation quickly moved over to something else. Something Lucy couldn't laugh at. "Lucy," she said in turn with a simple shrug. She didn't much care for making new friends, but she had laughed about the girl's dead pet, so that was the least she could do, right?

Strangely, the reaction she received got Poppy Lockwood laughing as well. "Oh my god, what is happening?" Whilst she did not appreciate the girl making the death of her pet into a laughing matter but at the same time she was kind of glad for it because she was not immediately sympathetic.
It was a different -- very very different -- response from the ones others normally gave over the past week. Which Poppy actually found quite oddly refreshing. "Thank you uh Lucy for not offering your condolences. I was getting tired of that."

Shrugging in an "what can you do"-manner, the brunette tilted her head. "You're welcome, I guess." Now, Lucy was hardly the type who was known for offering mutual feelings on, well, any matters. The death of a stranger's pet was one of those things that wouldn't phase her. At all. Why would it? Why on earth should she care about something as trivial?
Heck, she barely cared about the people she was supposed to care about.
"I could, you know," she began. "Offer my condolences, but we both know that coming from a stranger, it would be barren and hollow anyways, so I figured I'd save both of our time." Again, the brunette shrugged.

"Very true." Crossing her arms over her chest, the nineteen year old nodded her head in agreement. Whatever it was, Poppy Lockwood found herself actually liking the other girl's straightforwardness and her lack of care to others'her feelings.
"Besides, for all you know, there probably was nothing significant behind the feline's death. Or it was I who murdered it," she said jokingly though a little and tiny part in her actually believed it. Which was silly but in the grieving state, her mind usually found ways to blame herself, thinking of the what ifs.
Before her mood could be dampened, Poppy changed the subject. "Anyway, I don't know what's the protocol for meeting strangers in the mountains, but you got anywhere to be? If not, are you up for a game of paintball?"
"Well, if you were the one behind the death, you're surely a lot more morbid than I first thought," she added. In a way, Lucy might have preferred that. Too many kids at this school tried so hard to fit in and be perfect. So few let their own individuality shine through, and for those who did, they were usually plastered as being freaks - more so than they already were, being superpowered and all.
The request had Lucy's eyes widening and her eyebrows rising. "Paintball?" she asked, chuckling at the ridiculous request. She looked around, half expecting there to be paintball guns lying around somewhere, hidden in the bushes. "Here?"

The younger girl stuffed her hands in her pockets and chuckled, neither declining or agreeing to what Lucy said. She let the other girl think what she wanted. Whilst Poppy Lockwood was not one to kill her beloved pet, she was hardly the kind to put up a fake front in order to fit in with the crowd. She liked the way she was and damn what the others thought.
"Oh yeah, here. Where it's totally out in the open and where we could hit unsuspecting targets," she replied sarcastically. The nineteen year old shook her head, laughing. There might not be any paintball guns lying around, but she did know of a place somewhere in the mountains. "I meant that Badass Mutant Paintball Complex, ya know?"

"Ah, yes, the BMPC. Heard all about it," she replied with a snort. In a way, Lucy found herself actually enjoying the girl's presence. Most people were either super annoying and/or treated her like she was made of glass. That they had to step carefully around her, otherwise she'd fall through the cracks, never to be seen again.
"Well, no matter where you've hid these paintballs- wait, do you have one of those magical pockets like people in videogames? Where you can fit a fucking sledgehammer along with ten other items in your pockets?" Mockingly, Lucy's eyes widened in awe.

The nineteen year old laughed. Out loud. It was not one of those small laughs people let out. She really laughed. Considering what had happened some weeks ago, Poppy Lockwood was really appreciating the other brunette's presense.
This was one of the good days and it was one that would not be tainted by the aching memory of Coca Cola's death. "Unfortunate enough, I don't have one of those pockets. But perhaps I should." A smile broke onto her face. With that, she turned around and started walking. "You coming, Lucy?"

Lucy stood for a while, simply watching the odd creature of a person she'd met. Every instinct in her body told her to throw every ounce of snark and the brunette, yet here she was, making plans with a completely stranger - and she couldn't help but smile at it.
"Yeah," she said as she hurried after the girl.
Well, this surely had the potential to end up being quite the interesting day, after all, even though it had started out terribly.

Her steps started slow, taking one step at their own pace, just waiting to see if the other girl actually followed. It would not have surprised her honestly if Lucy turned around right there and then and went in the opposite direction because who actually took a stranger up on their offer to play paintball?
Well, Poppy Lockwood had certainly met a number of people under off circumstances. Some she kept acquainted more than others. So when she heard the footsteps nearing her, a smile danced on her lips, glad she would have a partner to play paintball with for the morning. It was not like she played the sport frequently.
It did not take long for the two to reach the Badass Mutant Paintball Complex since they were already in the mountain area. At the front desk, they gave the details and Poppy paid the rent for their equipments.
