[Devyn Solway]

Devyn saw nothing wrong with how she had laid things out to make it clear that she and Zoe were not together and had not been for a while. All of it was the truth; Zoe broke with her and Zoe had long sense moved on. As long as the people that had asked were clear on it, Dev didn't really care too much about the rest. She also didn't see why anyone would want a photo of her or Zoe; especially of them together, but she was not going to fight it if Zoe wanted to get a photo. Devyn didn't trust their intentions behind it but yet again she didn't really care enough to speak up or say anything on it.

Zoe didn't even get to fully answer the question and the 'guest' were already moving to get a photo, which Dev did feel half tempted to duck out of and sneak off. It would be the perfect distraction and would allow her to get the distance she requires and figured Zoe would be fine with it. After all, Zoe said she was just checking in on her, they did that, and that had to mean they were done; right? She did move into position that was requested, but it would have been easy enough to tell that she was not really pleased about all of this. Had the situation been different; if she didn't have the complicated feelings towards Zoe then she likely would have had a good time posing in the group photo.

That was not that case. "Let’s get this done, I got things to do." Devyn spoke up, not wanting to have to wait forever for a photo to be taken. When it was done she would already be working on moving away from the group as that agitated feeling persisted. She did motion for Zoe to come with her after a moment of hesitation, wanting to at least say something to Zoe before she would try and scamper off to literally go sit around to be asked to help out or something.

It definitely felt odd being on the other side of the camera. As Zoe awkwardly shuffled, both trying to get center and not touch anyone long enough for her power to do any real damage, she had to wonder if this was what it was like for the people she approached to photograph. Well, she liked to think she understood. It really wasn't the first time she'd done this. And everyone was laughing and smiling and so forth.

Well, nearly everyone: Devyn still acted like a dog who kept getting her tail pulled. Zoe actually ended up reaching for her friend's hand at one point, giving it a quick squeeze before letting it drop. She knew that Devyn wouldn't appreciate the paralysis, as she'd been one of the few people to feel it to its fullest strength. So just that light touch, and then pose, and smile, and then Devyn was moving away. Zoe hesitated just long enough to talk to the girls, before moving along.

"They seemed nice," she said, looking back, "and it's definitely nice to not have people hating me any more," she had to smile at that, remembering the rough parts of last year. Yes, things had definitely changed, and for the better, or so Zoe thought. She looked to Devyn now though, wondering if there was some reason that Devyn had waved her over again. Maybe she really wanted to help and was going to ask Zoe for advice?

I wonder if they have any ill intentions with these photos. Devyn could not help but to think while they were in the moment. It was a lack of trust thing in where she didn’t know them and thus didn’t have at least a little bit of time to get to know them. It was hard to get to know people in a group and you really had to have a one on one with them to really start to understand them. Everyone seemed to be in a good mood; minus Dev, but she still could not help but to be a little guarded. Dev’s mind was even starting to wonder, until she felt that familiar sensation.

That sensation that came from Zoe touching her that Dev had always welcomed and never really fared despite all that happened. Green eyes glanced down at the hand that had been quickly squeezed and then let go of. It was at least enough to make her calm down mainly for the fact she could not help the emotions that followed just being around Zoe. The photo was over, Dev left, and Zoe remained behind to do a little bit of chatting. Of course Zoe could not just walk off without saying anything, she was just too polite…mostly.

“Mmm.” Devyn just made a sound as her response to Zoe’s words on those people seeming nice. Dev’s eyes did look towards the ground at Zoe’s last comment. Not wanting to think about or hear about Zoe still recalling a time people ‘hated’ her. Devyn never thought or felt like anyone hated Zoe and maybe more of what she stood for…what she could do. She didn’t want to think about it. “Just be careful, not everyone is as nice as they act.” Devyn responded as she looked in the direction of where the group that wanted the photo had been.

She still could not help but to be protective over Zoe, it was just in her nature. Then there would have been silence as Dev was clearly debating if she should keep trying to talk to Zoe. To respond to what Zoe had said earlier or anything along those lines. “What were you about to say earlier?” Dev just went ahead and ask. If she didn’t, well then she would not have saw the point in holding Zoe up from taking some more photos.

Just a noise, not that Zoe should've expected anything more. She gave Devyn another look, wondering if she'd done something wrong. Should she not have said that? Or should she have turned down the photograph? Devyn insisted that not everyone was as nice as they acted, as if Zoe didn't already know that all too well. She'd experienced enough hardship in the world that she didn't see any reason to go out looking for more. She'd rather wait until it was proven.

Then again, perhaps that was part of the difference between the two of them. Things hadn't worked for them romantically, and at times, Zoe almost wondered if their friendship hadn't become more tense than it really needed to be. Like now: they'd just shared a positive experience together, they were free from obligations save for Zoe's photo taking (and she'd done her share of that already), so why was Devyn acting like she wanted to run away?

"Did I do something?" Zoe asked, finally unable to contain it. Hurt slid into her voice as she continued: "To you, I mean. It's just... lately you seem like... like you don't want to be around me any more. I keep wondering if I've said something wrong or done something wrong and it's---" Zoe trailed off, taking a deep breath and releasing it slowly. Maybe she shouldn't have even bothered in the first place.

Devyn did typically give people the benefit of the doubt to make a good impression on her within the first few minutes of meeting them. It was just different when she was with someone she cared a lot about and still had the urge to protect. Even if Zoe no longer needed and probably didn't want her to do. It was not easy to just turn off something once it was on, not for Devyn. Unlike Zoe she didn't just stop loving someone, could not just move on within a month or two, and certainly would not fall in love so fast with the next person. It was indeed a little bit of those thoughts that bothered Dev deep down when she was around the other girl.

It always caused her to wonder if she never really meant anything since Zoe seemed to be able to do such a complicated thing so easily. It was best to not think about all of this, to just leave, and that was the plan until Zoe asked a question. Did she do something wrong? Dev immediately wanted to say yes, but held herself back as a hand reached up into her hair and started to tug on it a little bit. Zoe was saying more and Dev waited until the other girl was finished, because there was no way she could not answer. She had to answer, especially when it seemed like answering would possibly get Zoe to understand why she behaved the way she did around her.

"You didn't give me a chance. I worked so hard for a month to be better for you and you didn't give me a chance. Punished me for something that happened a month before you broke up with me." Devyn said as she let out a heavy sigh before going on. "I love you. I'm always going to love you and never stop...like I said before, but it’s not like I expect things to change. I'm happy with Vera but I don't ever really want to talk about her or things involving her because I figure you would not want to hear it." Devyn added, starting to shake a little as she tugged on her hair a little more and took a deep breath to calm down.

"Fuck, I don't want to hear anything with whoever you are involved with. I just can't, not unless you want me to beat them up or something. So I figure why would you want to hear? Why would you even want to be friends with Vera? Be friends with me when..." Devyn voice trailed off near the end as she looked away. "You fall in love so fast...move on so quickly and it just makes me feel like I was not worth shit to you and just..." Devyn let out another shaky breath, hating doing this whole talking thing. "I do want to be in your life, I want to be friends, but you have to understand how hard it is for me when I feel this way and you just...relationships." Devyn managed to get that all out, stopping there.

Finally Zoe got Devyn to open up. No, not just open up, that sounded almost tame compared to the onslaught of words that Zoe almost found herself drowning under right then. Punished her? She was still holding onto the grudge regarding their breakup? Zoe honestly couldn't believe that, couldn't believe that Devyn should be so vindictive. Zoe hadn't been the one to cheat. Zoe hadn't been the one to turn around and stalk. Zoe hadn't been the one to take what should have been a special night, a glorious memory, and ruin it with infidelity. How dare Devyn keep holding that against her. And why would Devyn think that Zoe wouldn't want to hear about Vera? She genuinely liked Vera, and she'd long since lost her anger on that. For that matter, even that flare of anger she'd gotten about Devyn unearthing old wounds felt more like some distant echo, soon replaced by this just aching sadness.

One that only increased as Devyn again insisted that she loved Zoe on some level. of course Zoe still loved Devyn; she loved many people, and she fell in love fast, as Devyn was quick to point out. This whole dizzying onslaught just left Zoe uncertain as to where to begin, trying to figure out what it was, and she could only grab onto that last word.

"Of course I still care about you and want you in my life, Devyn. Why do you think I've never given up on you?" Zoe asked. she had to pause, reaching up to dot at her eyes, feeling liquid brimming up. Some older version of herself just wanted to run away sprinting, or even to just leap onto Devyn as she did in times past. But Zoe had grown, she'd moved past that. And she needed to pull Devyn along with her or else they were never going to see things eye to eye.

"And I do want to hear about all the wonderful things in our lives. We've moved on, Devyn. Dwelling in our past isn't going to help either of us move forward. Vera is a lovely person," Zoe didn't even skip a beat there. She couldn't blame Vera for what happened, really hadn't from the start. "She's strong and confident and I'm proud to have her as a friend. We became friends because she was my roommate, Devyn, and I needed someone during a difficult time in my life. I promise you that you had nothing to do with that. If anything... if anything Alice had more to do with my friendship with her," and Alice was gone from Zoe's life too, leaving her fingerprints all over the poet's heart. She took another deep breath, trying to suppress the stab of pain she felt from it. "Vera is my friend, and she's helped me so much, Devyn. You know how I need people to grow and she's just been... amazing. I couldn't be happier that you're with someone like her, someone that's so strong and passionate and who clearly cares so deeply for you.

"And I have someone now too. Just like Vera's so much like you, Riley's so much like me. She's artistic and protective and feels and understands. It's not... you know we didn't... we didn't work like that. But I truly believe we needed to be together, Devyn. Look at where we are now!" Zoe spread her arms wide, letting out a laugh. "We're in such loving relationships and we know who we are! We're stronger for it, and that never would have happened if we hadn't come into each other's lives. You saved me from myself and from who knows what, Devyn. I care about you too much not to want you in my life. So don't try and push me away. And never think you're worth... worth shit to anyone, least of all me."

Zoe smiled, took Devyn's hands, and stood up on her toes to lightly kiss the girl on the cheek, trying to show her affection in just the gentle touches, hoping that Devyn could understand that if the words just couldn't quite do it.

Devyn thought that she did well, that what she had managed to get out was pretty tame when it was coming from her of all people. She didn't yell and she honestly was not trying to put blame on Zoe or make her feel like it was all her fault. She was just simply stating how she felt and trying to explain why she was having such a hard time with it all. So sure it probably did seem like she was blaming Zoe and in part she was because if Zoe had given her a chance things might have turned out differently. At this point, Dev was fine how things turned out and it was not like she was saying all of this to win Zoe back or for the other girl to change her mind.

She was just saying it because Zoe wanted to know what was wrong and that was what was wrong. Everything Devyn said were the things that kept clinging to her mind and making her hesitant about being around the other girl and why she didn't want to say certain things. Dev was no good at words so she just hoped that Zoe would get it or would at least understand why Dev behaved the way she did around her now. Devyn didn't look at Zoe when the other girl started to speak about how she wanted Devyn in her life and that was why she was not giving up on her. Dev could not help but to think about how Zoe gave up on her until that whole DL event, but she pushed that aside and kept working on trying to let it go and move on. It was just really hard to.

Zoe added how she wanted to hear about the things going on their lives, giving complements about Vera, how Alice somehow was to blame for that, and how Zoe was honestly happy for her. The pain was still there, it didn't go away but she was slightly pleased that Zoe approved of Vera. The Zoe started to talk about her significant other, already causing Devyn to let out a low growl as the hand in her hair gripped tightened on the short locks of hair. "I know but...I don't want to hear about who you are with. At all. Ever. I can't and that is the problem. How can it be fair for me to talk about how things are going with me and her when I don't want to hear how things are going with you and...your person? It's not fair and so I should not just say anything about it." Devyn said as she managed to keep her tone from growing louder despite how she felt like yelling.

Did Zoe get that? Why Dev didn't want to hear about it? She may have been happy for Zoe in some part of her that she was not thinking that after yet another breakup she would go unloved or something like that. That didn't mean she was happy that Zoe was with anyone, and she doubt she ever would considering how she felt when those she had loved in the past ended up or even play flirted with someone that was not her. Zoe talked about how they were in loving relationship and knowing who they are. Devyn felt like speaking up that Zoe should speak for herself in terms of the latter comments, but she kept her mouth shut and just took another deep breath. It didn't seem like Zoe truly understood her or what she was getting at.

"T-thanks...it means a lot that you uh..." Devyn said, failing at words and just sort of trailed off as he rubbed at her eyes as she felt them getting watery. Then Zoe was moving, standing up on her toes, and lips touching Devyn's cheek. That familiar feeling slipping across Devyn in more than just the numbness. Dev got it...but at the same time it just hurt a little more as she was not actually sure if she really did get it. "It still hurts Zoe. So much and I don't get why but I still have not been able to let go of that thing you said. How you could not be friends with someone like me until you were at a better point with Alice. How can I...how can I know for sure you mean any of it? The kiss helped but...it hurts." Devyn said, failing one more to get the words fully out as she had to rub at her face again once tears started to slowly escape. Damn it, she hated this.

The hair pulling still tugged at Zoe's heart, twisted her up inside, but it didn't grate as raw as it used to. Perhaps it was having seen Riley do it out of confusion or amazement, or perhaps Zoe was just realizing that some people did things like this to express emotions they couldn't fully understand or let out through other ways. Just because she was so freeing with her emotions didn't mean she should expect other people to be.

And no, no it wasn't fair that Devyn didn't want to hear about Riley and how happy Zoe was. that was part of being friends, and it meant that Devyn wasn't letting go of something. That worried Zoe... but she realized that it wasn't her place to really address that. No, instead she'd have to try and talk to Vera, let her know about this, see if she could somehow comfort Devyn. They'd have to work together in some way, and just the thought of that made Zoe's head spin slightly.

It didn't stop her from loving Devyn. That she rendered Devyn stammering was certainly a step in the right direction. "I couldn't be close to you while everything was raw, Devyn," Zoe said, speaking softly. She still couldn't quite believe that these wounds hadn't healed. Had Devyn been picking at them? and why? They'd gone so far from then. "It hurts that you wouldn't think I'd mean any of this. Why else would I still be fighting for you? Why else would I still be here? Devyn, people love you, and you're going to have to learn to accept that. I'm certain it's not just me, but I certainly do. Just... not in the way that we'd originally thought. I did, but..." Zoe shook her head, "it's gone now. It's in the past. I've learned to love you differently. I really hope you can do the same. I'm not going anywhere anytime soon," Zoe had to smile at that. No, she definitely wasn't.

Devyn had always pulled at her hair when things got too emotional for her; it was just how she handled those feelings coming out. A lot of people might have cried when they were frustrated or upset but because Devyn didn’t like to do such a thing it had quickly turned into hair pulling. She had done it even as a little girl, back when her father was alive, and when she was dealing with the problems with her mother. Crying had always made her feel like she was weak and she didn’t want to feel or look weak in anyone’s eyes; least of all her own. It was literally something that Devyn didn’t even think about, it just happened.

It was indeed not fair for Devyn to not to want to hear about that special person in Zoe’s life and that was why she didn’t want to talk about Vera. Zoe might have wanted to hear about it but if that meant that Devyn had to also be up for hearing how Zoe’s relationship was doing, then she was not going to say anything about it. Hell, Dev didn’t really like talking about her relationship to anyone unless they asked. Dev liked to think that maybe with time she would be able to accept Zoe having someone else in her life like that, but she never would. She would be happy for Zoe, but she would never be okay with someone being with Zoe in that manner.

Zoe spoke of how she could not be close to Devyn when everything felt so raw. That didn’t help her; not when she was used to people leaving her so much when things felt raw or they could not handle her emotions as well. It just seemed unfair that people expected her to remain tough when she was hurting likely more than they were. Dev didn’t say anything on it, not wanting to keep that topic going forever and also not wanting to make Zoe feel like she was blaming or attacking her. “It hurts when you don’t…like I feel like you don’t even try to see it from my point of view.” Devyn spoke up. She had tried to see it from Zoe’s point of view and that’s why she didn’t talk about certain things and tried to not do certain things.

All so she would not upset Zoe, but by not doing said things it seemed to have the opposite effect. Zoe pointed out that she basically would not have been here and would not have kept fighting for her if she didn’t want her in her life. Devyn let out a slight grumble at Zoe using that L word. “I know.” Devyn let out as she looked away and debated leaving then. She knew people loved her and that Zoe cared in some way, just not in the other way. She didn’t want or need to be reminded of that when Zoe had made that all too clear several times. It just scratched at a wound that would never fully heal and caused it to bleed a little. “I…I don’t know how else to try and explain it for you to understand…” Devyn spoke up as she just shrugged her shoulders, already shutting down.

Didn't try to see it from Devyn's point of view? Again, that hurt, and again, Zoe fought to keep it down, knowing that lashing out wouldn't help. What she saw was someone still in pain, someone who still felt a certain way and couldn't, for whatever reason, get over it. Zoe understood all too well: she'd been devastated after their breakup. Yet Devyn hadn't given her space, had nearly stalked her, had all but attempted to emotionally blackmail her. Zoe had barely recognized it for what it was at the time, just knowing that she didn't feel good and that she needed distance. How was it that after all this time Devyn still couldn't see that? Zoe could, and that was part of why she kept repeating.

It didn't change facts. She still loved this messed up woman. She put Devyn as one of the people closest to her life. Not her girlfriend, not that type of love, but something different, just as important and just as mature. "Then don't," Zoe offered as Devyn finished. "It's just... don't be afraid to talk to me. And don't invent this distance that doesn't need to be there. Things have been rough between us, Devyn, and they're much different now than they have been, but that doesn't mean you haven't always mattered to me."

And Zoe gave Devyn another smile, not sure what else to say, what else really needed to be said. Sometimes you didn't need explanations, so long as things were shared.

Devyn honestly was not trying to hurt Zoe and simply just saying how she felt and how she saw things. It was possibly that she saw things wrong or just didn’t see the full scope of just how Zoe thought, but she was no mind reader. Things would have been different had she been a mind reader and she doubted she would have been the kind of person she was today with such a power. Devyn didn’t see this other things that possible were the cause of Zoe behaving the way she did. All Dev saw was how Zoe had hurt her and bene like everyone else she had ever grown to care for. A part of her wondered if it was better that way; that Zoe stopped caring for her in such a way, because everyone that ended up being able to handle how she was died.

Dev didn’t even want that to happen with Vera and it was why she still had a lot of fear even in a relationship she was happy to have. It was not perfect, far from it, but it was different then things had been with Zoe. However; Dev still fear that the same outcome could occur, or worse. She quickly pushed such thoughts from her mind as she took another deep breath and gave her hair another tug. At the very least, she was not losing control over her power and not lashing out on Zoe or anyone. Zoe made it sound like it was just so simple, but it was not in the slightest. Dev didn’t say anything on it, just knowing that she had to work at it still so that it would become that simple.

“It’s just…I’ll work on it.” Devyn spoke up, wanting to just make it clear why it was hard for this sort of thing to just work. She didn’t see the point in at by now, and just figured she would just nod and just work on it. She already felt dejected by all of this already so was not really in it to fight or keep it going for long. Then there was silence, with Zoe just standing there with that cute smile on her face that had Devyn letting out a sigh after a moment. “Can we hug it out real quick?” Devyn asked as she opened up her arms.

“And…there was something I wanted to talk to you about but because…because I don’t want to talk about you and your girl….I’ll just tell you about it later…when I can handle hearing about your relationships so it’s fair.” Devyn added after a moment of hesitating.

Work on it: "That's all I can ask for," Zoe insisted, knowing that not only was it the right thing to say in response, but that she actually meant it. She wanted to push Devyn, yes, help her friend, help see her grow, but she knew that too much pushing would result in a break and, well, Devyn didn't need any more of those. The mention of a hug just had Zoe smiling, and soon that smile got a nod in addition.

"Of course," she said. She paused for a moment, mostly because of the comment, which had her looking. Hug first: Zoe slid under Devyn's arms, taking, as usual, the sort of more subordinate position of the one being hugged and wrapped more. Devyn was larger than her (most people were in some form or fashion), and she figured that this was what the other girl expected. This didn't stop her from sliding her arms around her friend and giving her a slight squeeze.

"are you sure?" she asked, looking up. "Because I don't mind talking, truly, and I could try to avoid specifics and the like if that would make it easier on you."

Devyn smiled a little bit when Zoe seemed pleased with her response that she was going to work on it; that seemed to be what Zoe wanted. As long as Zoe didn’t expect for her to succeed right away or not fails at it, then Dev didn’t feel as pressured. She really was going to try, it was just going to be hard and she saw no point in lying to herself, and thinking that it would be easy. Zoe had the right mind set of needing to push Devyn but not push too hard, because that was exactly what Devyn needed. Right now all Devyn wanted was to hug the other girl, be physical and really get a feel for if there was truth behind the other girl’s words.

Yes, the little peck on the cheek had helped but a hug would say so much more because Devyn would be able to feel the other girl’s body within her arms. She smiled a little more when Zoe was up for the hug, moving into that perfect position to be hugged. It was such a wonderful and comforting feeling to feel Zoe within her arms again. To be able to feel Zoe’s body and take in her scent; even if she could smell that other ones scent, it still helped her feel that Zoe was in fact being honest about what she had said. Now it just came down to if Devyn could ever come to deal with Zoe being with someone else, which at the moment was still a no.

Her arms went around the smaller; giving Zoe a hug without pulling the girl too, too close to her body since she didn’t want to make her uncomfortable. It was just nice to be able to hug Zoe, it made her feel a lot better in general and felt like they would be able to end this on a good note. However; Zoe was asking if she was sure and pointing out that she didn’t really mind and could try to avoid specifics to make it easier. …should at least try. Devyn thought to herself, figuring she would never be able to do it if she never actually tried. “I uh…well…yeah, I don’t even know how to say any of it without feeling awkward.” Devyn admitted as she gave her hair a small tug.

“Just…well ask me questions. Like you don’t have to know but like if you ever think up something to ask, just ask it. Easier for me to answer a question then to just like vent or talk about something….cause I don’t do that.” Devyn pointed out. Zoe should have known or at least assumed that Devyn would not be good at communicating in this manner.

Didn't even know how to say any of it? That definitely didn't sound like something that they'd be all that comfortable discussing. And yet Zoe was still hugging Devyn, frowning slightly. She could see the tug and actually squeezed Devyn a bit more. "Don't make me paralyze your fingers," she said slightly threateningly. Technically she could, but whether or not Zoe would actually do so was something else entirely.

Just ask questions? If there was something that she wanted to discuss. Zoe's brow furrowed and she took a step back, considering. There were several questions that came to mind, and she almost immediately wanted to ask the obvious question of what was really bothering Devyn. But Zoe would have to be at least a bit more subtle than that.

"Does it... are you upset about the dating auction?" Zoe guessed, speaking tentatively, not quite willing or able to come out and say anything more directly than that. She was already looking up at Devyn like she half expected the other girl to start sprinting off into the distance or start pulling hair at any moment.

Devyn was not really much of a talker; she could talk, but not about things that were super serious all of the time. She rarely even knew if what she would say would be the right way to say it and just preferred to just do something. Doing something should have been enough to show emotions and what someone wanted, words just didn't carry as much weight as action did. At least not in Devyn's opinion but she was working on trying to be a bit more talkative about the things that she just didn't like talking about. Dev's grip on her hair loosed when she felt Zoe squeeze her; recalling that Zoe didn't like when she did that.

No one really close liked ever seeing Dev tug on her hair, but that was probably because they all knew what it meant. "Pffft, would you really?" Devyn asked. She would not put it past Zoe; she just figured Zoe would be in a higher state of emotions in order to do something so bold. Zoe had done something like that a few times, but Dev was still not sure if Zoe could do it just on will alone at that very moment. She still removed her hand from her hair and moved to let go of the smaller girl. Hands immediately went into pockets then as she waited for either goodbyes or for Zoe to ask a question.

She could tell Zoe was thinking, perhaps debating if she wanted to ask someone, leave it, or what she should ask. Dev was just mentally preparing herself for what Zoe could end up asking. Was she upset about the dating auction? "I mean...I was at the time. Didn't want anyone to win you, except Vera or someone I at least knew. I just...I don't like the idea of you being with anyone else and then that Bellefonte bitch had to go and say those things and make you uncomfortable and piss me off." Devyn responded, letting out a low growl as her green eyes turned a little darker just thinking about it.

Dev didn't hate the other girl for winning and did accept it partly but she just didn't except the idea of anyone being with Zoe, it was how she was with all of her Exs. Anyone that went out with them after she had come to love them, well it was best if Dev thought of them not really existing for the sake of not getting in the way of anything.
