ARIANNA GRACE ROBINS
38 // FEMALE // STRAIGHT // POWERLESS // ENGLISH TEACHER // KATE MULGREW
Arianna is a curious mix. She is very kind and generous with her time, and she can be fierce and passionate. She is a dynamic personality, generally unafraid to speak her mind, but with an open ear to listen. Arianna is the half-sister of Regan and Cole, and is their legal guardian.
Arianna was never an overly active person, preferring instead to spend her time with books. She is a lover of good literature, from the classics to contemporary, from Shakespeare to Connelly. She writes, too, but hasn't been able to publish anything just yet. Her free time usually finds her with a good book outside in the sun, or by a brightly burning fireplace, if she can find one.
At her worst, Arianna can be stubborn to a fault. She lacks any real understanding of those who show ignorance or those who can't show empathy. This has led her to defy the instructions of her superiors from time to time. She gives everything she can for her students, sometimes even at the expense of her own well-being. The only people she holds closer to her heart than those she teaches are her brothers.
::Arianna Then
Arianna was an only child for the first 23 years of her life. She was born to William and Regina Robins of Edmonton, Alberta. William was a writer, working part-time for a local magazine; Regina was a schoolteacher. As a child, Arianna was the best of both William and Regina - she had Williams kind heart and giving, generous nature, along with his love of books and stories, and she had Regina's passion, her zest for life, and her unflinching regard for what was fair and just.
Her father was special in that he had a 'gift' that, as far as he knew, nobody else shared. He had a sixth sense that consistently gave him a certain understanding of the future. He couldn't see specifics, but his insides could sense things, and his gut could tell him things, that would invariably come true. He used this gift to create the best life he could for his family, and Arianna consequently was given one of the happiest childhoods imaginable.
Arianna had many friends, but only a few that she was very close to. At five years of age, she met the girl who would see her through to high school as her best friend, Liz. The pair were creative, imaginative, and full to bursting with energy. For years, they were inseparable, which made the following tragedy all the more difficult.
At the age of eleven, Liz was diagnosed with advanced brain cancer. Nobody could understand how it hadn't been caught sooner, but by that time it mattered little. Arianna remained by Liz's side through every part of the traumatic events that followed, shaved her head in support when Liz went for chemotherapy, and gave everything she could give. Liz succumbed to her illness at the far-too-young age of thirteen, under a month before their graduation to high school.
Arianna was devastated, and William found himself wrestling with his own guilt - he felt as if he should have known what was happening to Liz, that his 'gift' should have warned him. When his 'gift' offered him another warning, years later, he knew there would soon be another tragic, unavoidable change, but he did not understand what that change would be.
That change emerged as the worst imaginable scenario for either himself or Arianna: Regina developed terminal cancer of the liver. It progressed quickly through seven traumatic months before she passed away. Arianna was nineteen years old.
Arianna, having now lost two of those closest to her to cancer, fell into a severe depression. William, struggling through his own grief, was at a loss to help his distraught daughter. Despite all of this, Arianna and William had never been closer. Their mutual grief over the loss of Regina left both of them clinging to each other as a last safe haven.
However, William's grief clouded his judgment, and the efforts he had made to hide his 'gift' gave way to sheer apathy. He grew careless and confused, sometimes mistaking his premonitions for events that had already taken place.
It was one of these moments of carelessness that gave their lives their next sharp turn. William, working late to meet a deadline and not thinking properly, wrote a piece about a house fire in the city that claimed the lives of the two youngest children of the family. By an unforgivable lack of oversight, the piece was printed, though no such event had yet happened. The magazine received various complaints, many from the family itself, and the bad press nearly resulted in William losing his fragile means of earning a living.
Then, not even a day after the magazine was published, the house fire about which he had written took place, and as he had predicted, the two youngest of the family's children were killed. The little attention William had been getting soon magnified as he found himself under investigation for starting the fire in the first place, simply to prove himself right. Eventually, the blaze was ruled as a the result of a carelessly-discarded lit cigarette, and the charges were dropped, but the damage to his and Arianna's lives was done.
The evening William was cleared, he and Arianna talked for a long time. He shared everything he knew about his 'gift' with her, and begged her forgiveness for his lapse in judgment. Arianna was, to say the least, sceptical, but in the the face of her father's sincerity and the reality of what had come to pass, she slowly began to believe he was telling the truth.
The two agreed that they couldn't remain in Edmonton any longer. There were too many unhappy memories, and though he had been cleared of any wrongdoing, William remained very unpopular. They left mere months later, bound for a small town in Arizona called Buckeye. They used their savings to purchase a small bookstore with an accompanying apartment above, and they slowly began to rebuild their lives.
The arrival of Regan and Cole, her twin brothers, and the events that led to their departure from Buckeye, can be found in Regan and Cole's profile.
::Arianna Now
Her twin brothers were enrolled at Bellefonte Academy, and Arianna returned to Livingston only to find herself feeling extraordinarily lonely. She knew she should be feeling relieved that they now had somewhere to go and feel safe, but as she walked back into the apartment every day, it felt strangely empty. For the last fifteen years, she had barely spent a week apart from the twins. She felt more like a mother than a sister to them.
One particularly long day, she brewed a hot cup of coffee - black, the way she liked it - and she sat at the table, and as she drank it, she wondered what her own future would hold for her. After leaving Arizona, she'd followed in her mother's footsteps and gotten a teaching degree, and she'd found herself a reasonable - if not entirely satisfying - job in Livingston. It was a relatively high-end school, where the kids were snobs and the staff were worse, and she longed to find kids who really needed her... just like her brothers had.
It took her half a cup of coffee to make up her mind, and by the time she'd finished it, her laptop was open and she was carefully composing another email to this Alistair who had contacted her, and she tried not to feel silly as she typed:
Her hand was trembling again as she hit 'send', and she tried not to let herself get too excited, but she had to admit that the possibilities were, indeed, exciting. Now all she had to do was wait... and hope beyond all hope that what she had to offer was good enough for a place as unique as Bellefonte Academy.
Spoiler alert: as things turned out, it was.

Alistair:
I'm sure you meet many families and so you may not remember me, but my name is Arianna Robins and I'm the older sister of Regan and Cole Robins, who recently enrolled at Bellefonte Academy. As strange as this may sound, I am writing to ask you for a job.
I am a schoolteacher by trade with several years of experience. I have been here in Livingston for the past several months, but before that I taught in three other states, and before that I was co-proprietor of a successful bookstore in Buckeye, Arizona, from which I bring a joy in and a love for reading.
I would like to apply to work at Bellefonte Academy, for multiple reasons: primarily, I would adore the opportunity to learn more about people like my brothers, and to learn from them and with them; and second, I feel that as an English teacher I have a strong passion and knowledge to offer the students.
I realize that your position may not be directly affiliated with staffing for the Academy, but I have attached my resumé and hope that you can forward my email and contact information to the proper destination.
Thank you for your time and attention.
Sincerely,
Arianna Robins
