She heard his words. Understood them, even. And if there was something about what he said that Penelope finally understood, it was that Trevor Paige was nothing like anyone she'd ever met. Still, the brunette didn't feel flattered. In a way, she felt offended. She knew that probably wasn't his attention, of course, so she didn't bother pointing that out. "So," she began, putting both of her hands on her hips as she looked at him directly. "What you're looking for is a challenge - someone to challenge you, right?"
Because that was what Penelope got from this; He didn't want her per say, he just wanted someone or something that stirred up his usually dull life. Something he couldn't read or predict. Something he couldn't control. Perhaps she was being a tad cynical, but she was also sure that he could find that anywhere if he just looked long enough. There was plenty of people and things that could give him that kind of rush.
And what happened when that no longer was the case? What happened when she stopped being unpredictable or stopped surprising him? Then what? "And then what? Now that this is out in the open, what do you want me to do with it? What do you want to come out of this?"

"No." The word came easily and casually. Trevor didn't need to think about any of this anymore. He'd already gotten everything out, already vocalized some of his innermost thoughts. Penelope, whether she realized it or not, had quickly wormed her way into the deepest recesses of his mind. She was an enigma, an unpredictable force of nature the likes of which he doubted he'd experience again. "I don't see it as a challenge or competition. It's not a matter of succeeding or failing. If that was all it was I wouldn't have kissed you. I would've just kept talking to you about nothing in particular." He let out a chuckle, one born from an awareness of just how crazy he was coming off as. "At the risk of sounding crazy and putting my foot in my mouth... You are unlike anyone I've ever met and..." He trailed off for a moment and issued a resigned sigh. "And I wish I was better and letting you know that. I really do."
A soft chuckle escaped and Trevor shrugged. He didn't know if he was having trouble expressing his true thoughts and emotions or if Penelope was continuing to keep him, and his baggage, at arm's length. "That's the thing." He said. "I can't tell you that because I don't know anything about this. You can take all this however you want, it's not my place to tell you how to react. I don't expect anything from you but the unknown is sort of the exciting thing. In you I found someone I want to be around, to know more about." He paused to issue another low chuckle as if he could hardly believe the words he was saying. "It made me wonder what it would be like to kiss you."

The brunette stayed silent. Mostly because she wasn't sure what to say. She understood what he meant, or at least, partly. In a way, understanding wasn't the issue. The issue was more so that Penelope hadn't gotten the time to really think about all of this herself. She didn't know what all of this meant or if she even wanted it. It was a frustrating feeling, not knowing what you wanted or how to handle something. Perhaps that was why she kept the boy at an arm's length instead of simply either accepting his offer or telling him off.
"Well," she began, looking off into the distance. "I think we're both aware of one fact," she continued as she turned to look at him. "It's not like I can stop you from doing anything." She fell quiet again, contemplating her next words. "You strike me as the kind of person who does whatever he wants regardless of the obstacles." There was a sigh following her words, then a shrug. "Sounds like I'm stuck with this whether I want to or not," she smiled faintly.

By now Trevor had come to terms with just about any possible outcome of all this. He'd prepared for Penelope to all but tell him to go to hell and walk away. When she didn't it was met with more than a hint of curiosity. If she was so sure about it all and how much she was against it (as she'd hinted strongly at before) then why was she humoring him? Why wasn't she simply shutting him down and pushing him away at every turn?
"And do you really think I'm the kind of guy that would keep going on with this if you're not..." Trevor trailed off and shook his head, exhaling in a long, slow breath. "Okay with it?" Trevor's head shook. He was too smart for this. He could read Penelope's reactions well enough. There was no need for him to continue going around in circles. "Look." He said plainly, waving a hand idly. "I've told you everything from my end. You know exactly where I'm coming from." Trevor's head shook although it was mostly in frustration over his own actions. He'd been foolish (which was putting it nicely) in thinking anything could come of this, nevermind his uncertainty as to what, exactly, could have happened. "Nevermind I'm... sorry." He turned away from Penelope, ready to leave and head back to his cabin. Everything had been all about him. What he felt. What he wanted. It felt as though his want to know how she felt had become tertiary, at best. No, it would be easier if he simply cut bait and ran before it got too late and he came off as too desperate.
"I'm sorry I dragged you out here. I'll leave you alone."

Penelope hadn't expected Trevor to give up that easily, though, she supposed she couldn't really blame him. She wasn't exactly giving him much to go on. She didn't answer him one way or another. Of course that would make just about anyone frustrated. But the issue was that Penelope had nothing to say. She had no answer. There was no "yes" or "no", just "I don't know", and she had a feeling that wouldn't do. Not anymore. "Trevor Paige, giving up. Never thought I'd see this day."
"But if you think I'm going to let you get away from your school paper duties that easily, you're sadly mistaken, Paige." Was all the brunette said as she too turned to move in the direction of her own cabin. He could take her words however he wanted, of course, but walking away wasn't an option.
