Not What I'm Used To

"...I sat on my bed, and went to select his name and... I just, I couldn't do it. I froze, it was like god pressed the backspace button to my mind and I couldn't do it. I just couldn't text him." The ebony mutant admitted to her best friend as she stayed seated on the opposite edge of the couch, facing Heather. Barefooted and in her PJs as she continued to dip the tea bag into her hot mug. It was her first night back and already Onnie was contemplating on whether or not coming back had been a good decision.

Sure, she missed Heather, dearly... more than anyone could imagine. This was her best friend, her first dorm-mate and roommate in the States, and the another IMAC student who made the transfer. Heather had helped her out with much more than anyone could imagine and was always there for Onnie. Someone who Onnie would always return the favor to. Yet, just the idea of being back here, knowing that she had to make a selfless decision of letting Jack go so that he could be free. It was upsetting. They were no longer together, he was no longer her boyfriend, and he was free to do as he pleased because he deserved that much and so much more.

Onnie on the other hand wasn't quite sure what she deserved. Her life felt as if it had a big gap ever since her father died. Emotionally and spiritually, she was a mess. Her voice had been stuck on this British accent since the first day mourned her father's death and it just wouldn't change back. Everything else on the other hand, she could manage.

Her brown eyes looked up from her mug of tea to her best friend, issuing a slight smile. "For the first time, I chickened out. I don't remember when I became so fightened to face my mistakes. Do you think you could manage to live with a scaredy cat now?"

Heather's first response upon Oneyka walking through the door had been somewhere between initial terror at somebody walking through her front door, and then excitement at her friend, and then sadness when she actually stopped to study her friend's feelings. The poor girl had been through a lot of things, stuff that Heather for the life of her wished that her best friend had never needed to go through.

She sat, her knees drew up to her chest with her arms around them, nodding and listening quietly while Oneyka spoke, thinking of the best response she could in her head. She knew she probably wouldn't sleep very well until she knew that her friend was in a better place, so she was going to do everything that she possibly could to help achieve that.

Heather spoke up now, leaning forwards and putting her hand gently on her friend's. "Don't ever talk like that." She replied soothingly. "You've been through something. Something most people never have to go through, and at the same time you had a split with someone you dearly love, which might I re-iterate, was nobodies fault." She paused and let her thoughts bounce around in her head.

"A little nerves is completely understandable. But first thing you've got to remember, I'm here. If you want me to just listen at all, or hug you, or even physically calm you with my power. I'm here. Secondly, of course I want to still be your roommate." She smirked. "It's funny you know? I always thought that I'd be better off living alone, empathy headaches and all. Especially not living with a couple at that."

She paused and brought her eyes up to look her friend in the eyes. "I didn't even realise how much I was wrong until you walked back through the door. Being around close friends really makes me whole, so yes Oneyka Duffuor, I think I can manage to live with you." And with that, the redhead winked at her friend, put her friend's drink down and enveloped her in a gentle, but firm hug.

She felt her bestie's touch and it was as comforting as the first time the two shared a hug or a heart to heart conversation. Listening, Onnie looked up from her mug once more. Nobodies fault. In more ways than one, Heather was right. Oneyka couldn't help but to leave, but at the same time she could have followed her mother's orders and stayed. Heck, she could have did a better job with keeping in contact. So why did she feel like a complete pile of poop when thinking about how she broke up with Jack.

Her brown eyes looked back down at her mug as a smile crept up on that face of hers. While she was already here, just hearing it from Heather made her that much comfortable with staying. Tilting her head, she looked back up, giving Heather an uneasy smile. "Sorry about that again. It must have been such a pain dealing with both me and Jack's emotions like that, then all of a sudden having no one... around."

Blinking, her smile widened, only to soften as soon as she felt her friend's arms wrap around her. Oneyka reached her own, only to hug Heather just as firm, if not tighter. This surely wasn't the time to cry but Onnie could feel herself inching that way, instead she managed to keep it together. There were two people in this world, other than her parents, that Oneyka felt the closes to and one she wasn't on the best terms with at the moment. But this one right here, made Oneyka feel as there was still someone who didn't hate her for leaving. It made her feel that much better.

"Mmmhhh, you have no idea how much I've missed you Heather." She stated in mid hug, not wanting to let go of her friend just yet. "I also had no idea how whole I could feel until I came back here. Thanks for not being too upset at me." Releasing her friend, she tried to put on a smile while brushing a lock of her out of her face. "I've miraculously managed to survive without my father, and without... Jack, don't know what I would do if I lost you as well." Taking a deep breath, she looked at her mug of tea nearly cooled due to her hesitance. She downed most of it before anymore cooled off.

"And as much as I've thought about your powers being able to help. I think I'll fight through this emotional battle... unless of course, it becomes too much for you in here. Then you have my permission to dim it down." She chuckled.
