Coca-Cola's ears perked up as the door opened and in came his owner. Poppy Lockwood crouched down to pick up her cat. "Well, hello gorgeous," she cooed.
She had just returned from the cafeteria where she downed her late breakfast. With no classes for the day, she was ready to spend her free time holed up in her room -- as usual. The library was always an option but the comfort of her bed and her animal companion looked more appealing.
Stroking her cat, the brunette contemplated how to spend her afternoon. Her eyes fell on her laptop where she could read updated fanfiction online or stream a show. But then her eyes landed on the newly purchased book sitting on her bedside table.
Smiling at the memory it brought, she picked up Silence by Becca Fitzpatrick and made herself comfortable on the bed before delving into the world of fallen angels and Nephilims. Eighteen pages in, her phone pinged with an incoming message. "Seriously?"
Annoyed with the disturbance, she ignored it. The fact that she would have to get off the comfortable position she was in to fetch it was another reason why as well. Not bothering to check who the sender was, she continued with her book.

Last night was definitely one of the things Patch wasn't going to soon forget. The number with a smiley face on the corkboard behind the register had his mother giving him the eye when he walked in the next day and he simply smiled at her before going up to the cafe to start cleaning up.
When he finally caught a break, he went to get the number from the corkboard and disappeared to the back where he sent a quick text to whoever was on the other end of the number on the piece of paper.
It was never a guarantee that a girl actually left their real telephone numbers, even if they did have a pretty good time with you. Which was why when there was no response from the other end for a while, Patch decided to give the number a call.
Once it was picked it up, Patch cleared his throat and started talking. "If this isn't Poppy who bought a book from Patch then I'm terribly sorry but if you are, did you know that it's a little rude not to respond to a text after half an hour asking if they were still up for dinner? I'm quite sad right now."

The girl was sucked into her book. The ending of the previous book had left her with a cliffhanger and her hands had been itching to get the next installment. With the roll she had going on, you would think she would have read it immediately.
Instead, when Poppy Lockwood got into her dorm last night, she was still high from her time with Patch. She had a goofy grin as she got ready for bed and surprisingly was in no rush to know how the story continued.
But now with just the first chapter in, she was instantly hooked. Poppy got as far as to page forty-three before her phone rang. Can't a girl have her reading time? With the book in hand, she got up to answer the call. As the voice on the other end spoke, her brown eyes kept reading. When recognition dawned on her, she stopped to listen.
"Oh, hi." Her thoughts were a jumble especially with the surprise of the call and where she had left off in the book. "I was uhh..reading actually. So Patch, you called," stating the obvious. "How are you?" Her mind was not processing his words fast enough.

The girl clearly liked stating the obvious. He could deal with that. Through his grin, he responded. "Got sucked in by your stunning Patch huh." He teased, probably not letting go of that any time soon.
"I'm good, I'm good. Just wondering if I would be stood up at dinner tonight." He asked as he leaned back against the heater in his office. "You're a classy gal, right? You wouldn't have forgotten the dinner we planned last night?"

As if on cue, the word 'stunning' triggered the images that flood her mind. Specifically, images from last night. The tips of her ears turned pink and Poppy could not help but grin as she endured his teasing.
Finally she managed to compose herself. "Well, there's no denying that." She stuck a scrap of paper to mark the page before shutting it; her attention had shifted from it to the other person on the line. Taking the book and the phone with her back to bed, she returned to the comfortable position she was in not long ago.
Poppy did not realized he had texted early. This brought a smile. "Oh classy? I wouldn't know about that but it would be hard to forget, especially with a stunning one like yourself. I just didn't realized you had texted so early. Sorry about that," she added as an afterthought.

The girl could flirt, Patch thought to himself with a chuckle. A little cheesy but it wasn't like he was Mr. Suave either. It still made him chuckle.
"Well, as long as we're on the same page." He shrugged, changing the phone from one hand to the other. "So, I'm not going to be off until eight tonight, is it okay if I met you at the restaurant instead? I don't mean to be a bad date already or anything but we're short-staffed tonight but we have to close early."

Sometimes Poppy wondered how the characters in books spent their time before 'the big scene'. Those moments never went into detail -- who wanted to read every minute of someone's life when it all could be summed up in a paragraph?
Of course living it out was much different to reading it.
"Oh no, no. It's alright. You do what you need to do," she reassured him that it was no big deal. The girl was capable of navigating her own whereabouts. "So I'll see you tonight about eight ish then?" She asked to confirm in order to plan the hours leading up to it.

"Great." He grinned and added. "I texted you the address. If you get lost, just gimme a call. Save this number!" He warned her jokingly before looking down at his watch.
"Yeah, eight ish. Just wait inside at the bar or something? I'll call you if I'm running late or something." He nodded, even though she can't even see him. "So I'll see you then. Uh...bye." He grinned and waited for a while before hanging up.

Poppy smiled into the phone and her fingers played with the edges of the book. She felt like such a girl. "Awesome. I look forward to seeing you tonight. Bye, Patch." Both lines hung up then.
The girl threw her head back into the pillows as she sighed happily. Coca-Cola then pounced on top of her and nuzzled her neck. "Hey, you're gonna be alright all alone tonight?" Stroking her pet, she read his message, keyed in the address and number before continuing where she left off in the book.
All that was left to do now was wait.
Eep!
