"Excuse me mam, but who are you? Do you have any relation to the girl? Is it an emergency? We can't just pull a student out at the moment. Classes are on-going. If it is not an emergency, I hope you don't mind waiting until the next bell. We try not to interrupt lessons," said the lady at the front desk.
"What do you mean who I am? I'm her grandma for goodness sake!" Lola Green bursted out. Well that was not entirely true. Whilst she was related to Blair, she was not her grandmother. She was the grandaunt.
She had been here for over twenty minutes and the lady still refused to let her see Blair. Giving her excuses that only agitated her even more. "I want to see my granddaughter! Listen to me missy, when I was your age, we spoke to the elderly with respect! I suggest you do the same. Now bring me Blair Collins or I'd have a heart attack again." That did the trick. Lola then sat in one of the uncomfortable chairs while she waited for the girl.

What is going on? That was the first thought that crossed Blair's mind when a voice called for over the intercom. They were in the middle of a lesson--what could possibly pull her out of class? Or maybe, "who"?
Oh shit. Did Poppy throw her under the bus? She had not seen the stranger for some time now and thought the strange night stayed between them. Or maybe she finally pushed Lister into reporting her behavior. Or Miss Sulik did that. She vaguely wondered why she did not think positively. Is my life really that depressing?
But never once did she consider that her grandaunt was in town. So once she stepped into the office and saw Lola sitting in one of the chairs, her jaw dropped.
"Gran? How--wh--what are you doing here?" she asked, not believing her eyes. She tried to keep her voice chipper but the outright surprise was hard to mask. It was obvious in her expression too. "Oh gosh, did you pester the clerk for me?" She knew Lola could be quite stubborn when getting what she wanted. So this was either an emergency or her gran did her thing again. That poor clerk...
"Now that's more like it deary!" She shouted to the lady behind the desk as she made the announcement. "You know, can you add in there for her to make it quick? I don't have all the time you know." Lola Green chuckled at her own joke.
Unfortunately, the message through the intercom was too...democratic in a way. "Humph, can't take the old one's request can ya?" She grumbled. These people have no respect for the elderly.
Finally the girl arrived and she dare questioned Lola! "Are you done talking shorty?" She did not give a care how she had to handle the clerk. "Well, are you just gonna stand there or come here and give your granny hug?!" Arms srretched out, she waited for Blair to come closer for her to reach.
During the hug, she took a sniff. "Deary, why shampoo do you use?" Her hands began swatting the imaginary flies. "Come on, we'll buy some new shampoo while we're at it."

Sighing, she hugged the old lady. The sad part was that even when Lola grew negatively, she was still quite a bit taller than Blair. I swear, I will never get any taller, will I? She pulled back as her choice of shampoo was insulted. "It is lemon-scented, Gran."
She had been using it for as long as she could remember but she was not attached to it sentimentally or something. Lister always smells like citrus. Nope, not attached at all.
"While we are at what?" she asked, almost hesitant if she wanted to know the answer at all. "Gran, what are you doing here?"
It was not that she did not appreciate the visit.. she was just surprised. She had not seen her grandaunt since the funeral. Arnold Zane was her grandfather and Lola's brother. That was it. A weekend in her hometown and then back to school.
She had not been keeping in touch with any relatives, really. So why did Lola act like this a the natural thing to do? What is going on?
Finally the old lady received some love from her grand niece. It was about damn time. Lola felt that youngsters nowadays just did not know when to show some affection towards the elderly. Geez, was a hug so hard? All they to do was open their arms and give a good squeeze.
She laughed at Blair's choice of shampoo. "No wonder you look sour, you're wearing that awful thing! Some fruits would do better. Gives off a nicer smell." She took another whiff at it and waved her hand in front of her nose. "We're definitely using fruits. Didn't anybody tell you?"
Picking up her purse, Lola took her grand niece by the arm. "Why we're going to have lunch and get some shopping done deary." Waving to the lady at the front desk, she lead Blair to the door. "Well I forgot thanksgiving, so I thought I'd treat you to a meal. Then we can do Christmas." Patting the girl on the shoulders, she ushered her to quicken her pace. "Come on then, we don't want to miss the bus, aye?" Jesus, how slow can one walk?

She let the lady lead her to the door but mouthed an apology to the receptionist her grandaunt probably terrorized. Lola smelled like old people do, her eyes were bright, hands bony but firm. As always. Blair doubted the old woman came all the way here to take her shopping though. Normal old people maybe would but not Lola Green. Lola was cranky as well as blunt so that raised another question--why not just tell her why she was here?
But it was obvious her grandaunt will only talk when she wanted to. So Blair helped her onto the bus and there they sat near the door, on their way to the shopping mall. She wrapped her school jacket tighter around her as other passengers looked her way. What is a student doing out on a school day, right? But she didn't want to ask for a change of clothing before they left so she dealt with it. Instead, she tried to focus on something anything else. "How long will you be in town, Gran?" Please do not say forever.

The two made their way out of the building and despite how slow Blair Collins walked, they managed to catch the bus on time. Between the two, it was expected for the granny to be short of breath and struggling to catch up with the youngster, but nooooo it was the other way around. "Honestly, this isn't a stroll deary," Lola Green chatised her grand niece. It was not like the seventy year old had all the time in the world.
As they sat on the bus on their way to the mall, the passengers kept looking in their direction. Whether it was towards Blair, who was outside during school hours and wearing the uniform or to the old lady wondering whatever was she doing with the school girl. The former made more sense so Lola did not bother to feed their curiosity.
But she did have to feed her grand niece's. "Well deary, I guess you could say forever. Or until I die." Lola laughed at her own inside joke with death. "Moved here a while ago. That way we'd get to see more of each other, don't you think so?"

Shit, it is forever. She loved her grandaunt but that was when Lola was an ocean away where only good thoughts of her could come up. She was that distant old lady who was too honest but refreshing. The kind of person only to be taken in doses, not the whole bottle. Too much couldwould hurt. And frankly, she reminded Blair of the grandfather she lost before she could get to know him better. Grandpa Arnold would have understood her better than her own parents. Having similar abilities, he could even be her mentor. But no.
"A while ago?" she echoed, confused. Blair turned in her seat to face the old woman. She looked perfectly calm, completely unfazed with her innocent little poker face. "When exactly?"
She winced as she felt a sharp pain through her head, her heart rate becoming faster by every passing second. This was one of the reasons she avoided public places. So many people meant a lot more information to be taken in by her enhanced senses. Effin' side-effects. This was turning out not to be a good day.
After a second longer than Lola Green had expected, her grand niece voiced her questions. She thought about it and did the calculation in her mind. "Uh...I think..." Oh give the seventy year old a break. Her mind did not work as quick and as efficient as it did back then during her teenage years and up to her adulthood. "A month or two. It had not been that long deary." The granny brushed the fact as if it was insignificant. Well it was to her at least. Not so sure how Blair Collins felt about it.
Suddenly, she observed the younger girl winced in pain. She had seen it before -- with her brother during the times he actually returned home from the boarding school. He used to get woozy and headaches anytime they were in public. Suspecting the two had similar abilities, Lola jumped from her seat and shouted, "Stop! Stop the bus! Stooooooooopppp!!!"
The bus driver stared at her worriedly. So did every other passenger. Fortunately, the bus came to a halt and the doors opened. "Phew, sorry had a lil panic attack there. Think I'd take a breather." The seventy year old smiled at the man before walking down the steps off the public transport. "Yoohoo Blair, do ya wanna be left behind?"

She had actually gotten control of her powers some years ago but when the SPRITE spread, her side-effects became worse. All that progress on developing... lost because of some epidemic. Honestly, it felt like one disaster after the other for the girl. Either the universe hated her, or it just did not care. Cut me some slack, will you?
Her grandaunt's sudden outburst, surprised Blair. In fact, her ears rang. She watched the old lady step off the bus, claiming she almost had a panic attack. Blair doubted it but was too tired to argue then so she followed the leader. Her bare knees knocked together in the December breeze. Buttoning up her jacket, she walked towards the market. The cold did not seem to bother Lola but heightened senses included the sense of touch and Blair had a lot of cold receptors.
She chose the wrong day to not wear her sweater. But how was she supposed to know this was how the day would turn out? A little warning in advance would have been nice. Sighed, she created a little white ghost from her warm breath.
"Where are you staying? Why did you contact me earlier?" If Lola really just wanted to visit, why did she wait before seeing her?

The old woman scanned her surroundings as she waited for the slow younger girl. Jeez, how slow can one walk? It looked like the bus had dropped them off at a curb. Thankfully, not far up ahead, the mall came into view. It would not be a long walk but judging from the rate Blair was walking, it might not be as quick as she would like.
Lola Green heard the doors of the bus shut and her grand niece came up beside her. She was freezing and she looked terrible! "Well deary where's your sweater?" It was absolutely ridiculous for the girl to go out without something to keep her warm. If it was some teenage act, the seventy year old found it stupid.
"Ah, somewhere in the terrace. Close to downtown actually -- just a bus ride away," her reply began. "Been busy unpacking and settling in. I'm here now aren't I?" Tightening her coat, she took the girl by the arms and dragged her into the building. "Come on, before you freeze your socks off deary."
They went into the mall and was greeted instantly with the warmth the heaters provided. "That's more like it." Plenty of clothing stores. "Go on then deary, pick any store and we'd get that sweater of yours."

Like hell anyone needs two months to unpack. But she supposed she should not judge. Lola could do whatever she wanted. She wondered why they never crossed paths before. Kalispell was not that big of a town and she was sure she would recognize her grandaunt if she saw her on the streets. Then again, she rarely ventured outside the school anyway. And it was not like she actually kept in touch with her family members. So Lola owed her no explanation. Whatever her true intention was, it was hers.
At least it was warmer in the mall, she supposed. Blair rubbed her arms and looked around at the various clothing stores. She did not know why Lola seemed so insistent but she decided to make the best of it. She never really liked shopping much and often went to second-hand stores for stuff. There is just something about old stuff... Another thing was that there were less people in these stores.
So the girl walked into one of them. Going through a number of sweaters, she tried to make conversation. "You know, Gran, most people get knitted sweaters from their old loved ones. Christmas being near and all... What have you been up to instead?"
In the mall, Lola spotted plenty of clothing stores. Chic and trendy sweaters and coats were on display. Since the new year was coming closer, most stores were having a sale. New Years and/or Christmas sales. She saw a nice blood orange coat that she thought looked very cute and would fit her little grand niece perfectly.
Instead of going into one of those stores like what every other kid her age Lola suspected would, Blair shocked the old lady by walking in a secondhand store. There was nothing wrong with secondhand stores, but the choice was unexpected. But before she could say anything, the girl was already gone and she had to hurry her steps to catch up. "Oh now, you quicken your pace," she muttered under her breath.
Rifling through the many sweaters, she tried to find a suitable one for the blonde. "Hah, dear child do I look like I knit?" The seventy year old snorted. "I watch Gordon Ramsey of course. Go to the bakery. Walk my pets. Oh yes, that reminds me, you should come along one day. Christmas too! What are your plans deary?" Looking at the choices, she did not find one that she particularly like. "Deary, don't you go worrying about money. Just pick whatever you want."
