Danicca Prosperity Waylan
FACE CLAIM: Hayley Kiyoko
---------------------------------
AGE: Nineteen (03/14)
GENDER: Female
ORIENTATION: Bisexual
POSITION: College Student
POWER: Vocal Mimicry
Dani can copy sounds using her voice. From other people's voices to animal sounds to the revving of truck engines, if she's heard the sound she can probably copy it. It won't always be exact, the volume may be modified or a sound may be just off, but for the most part after a few years of training she's got it down.
LIMITATIONS:
As mentioned above, a sound to be copied must be one she's heard before, and she must have been aware of it. Louder sounds and sounds with abnormal frequencies are less likely to work for more than half a second as anything that would hurt a listener's ears will, in fact, hurt Dani's. No sub-bass noises, no sonic screeches, and no weird headache-inducing sounds outside her range of hearing. She must be able to concentrate on what sound or voice she wants to produce to be able to produce it willingly. When obsessing over something she may accidentally start talking in a voice (or making a sound) related to the issue, but other than that there is a very small chance she would make more than small sounds of surprise unconsciously.
SIDE-EFFECTS:
While using this ability, there can be immense strain placed on the vocal chords. Frequent use causes sore throat, temporary lost voice, and difficulty hearing softer noises. Overuse may cause an inability to make a single sound for several days, temporary total hearing loss, and permanent hearing damage. Even sparse use will make her need a cough drop at least once a day, provide her with a headache ranging from mild to migraine, and cause her to eventually need hearing aids.
HEIGHT: 5'1"
HAIR COLOR: Naturally, black. Currently cycling through three different dyes a year, so while she may be blonde for now or a redhead later, she could go back.
EYE COLOR: Dark brown.
MISC: Dani has three piercings, one on each earlobe and one on the upper cartilage of her right ear. She rarely has more than small studs in these, but when she does she favors feathers or spikes over anything else. One tattoo behind her left ear of a lambda (λ). A jagged scar on her ankle.
PERSONALITY: When Danicca was in her first year of high school, she was a short-fused, feminine-fearing tomboy. Not a lot has changed since then, but one may find a dress or a skirt in her wardrobe these days. Her temper is still as fierce as ever, maybe even moreso now that she has a better grasp on who she is and what she doesn't like to put up with. Little things can set her off, and a stack of little things may result in a flying fist. Whether that fist is directed at a person or an inanimate object probably just depends on the sheer luck of whoever is around and how much she's had to eat that day. She gets extra irritable when she's hungry, and she's definitely not someone who can have a light eating schedule.
While she has a very bad temper, she also has a wicked sense of humor. She was a notorious prankster in high school, and while that died down a bit in the latter years, she definitely still has the heart for it. Her roommates should be wary of whether they're on her bad side, as they may find their belongings not quite as they were before. Once she gets curious about someone's reaction to something, very little can stop her from finding out. Her filter barely functions to keep her snarky commentary out of professional environments, it's unlikely she could keep herself from messing with people she knows personally.
Anything that isn't anger or humor, however, Dani has the troubling habit of burying deep inside herself. She's paranoid about a lot of things, and one of them is that others will use her actual emotions and vulnerabilities as gossip fuel. Due to this, she's actually very intolerant of gossip and will instantly sympathize with the victim of a rumor. Not that that's always easy for her to show. She generally has walls of confidence built up to the point of arrogance, but if those break she'll lash out as best she can before hiding herself away to rebuild.
Dani likes children. If she could be convinced she were any good with them she'd babysit for a living, because she actually loves children. You can break apart an adult to see how they tick, even rebuild them if they'll let you, but only children are in the precarious position of being built for the first time. Dani is fascinated, awed, and slightly scared by that. Dani sometimes converses with children more seriously than she's prone to talk with adults. She's learned more nursery rhymes talking with children now that she's grown than she ever did in her playground days, and has a lullaby or two ready in case someone needs calmed.
Aside from lullabies, Dani loves music in general. She's not genre-specific at all, but if something is loud and faster than you can keep up with she probably listens to it while doing schoolwork. If something is quiet and slow she probably plays it all night to help herself get some semblance of rest. Anything else depends on whether she's in the mood to listen to it. Nothing more, nothing less. Music is one of the very few things that calms her when she's in any sort of a state, whether it be rage-filled or depressive, so a surefire way to set her off is to comment negatively on her taste in music.
Fierce loyalty is something Dani lives by, and expects of others. If something or someone has earned her trust, she'll stand by them as long as she can. If a person doesn't show the same sort of mentality for her, "as long as she can" may become a very short amount of time. And she'll likely not step away quietly.
SECRET(S):
-She's been in contact with her biological mother.
-She's prone to depressive spells.
FATHER: Ari Waylan (adopted) (Biological: Charles Jimenez)
MOTHER: Kiora Waylan (adopted) (Biological: Mitsu Koizumi)
SIBLINGS: Gabriel Waylan (adopted brother) Mayu Koizumi (Biological sister)
WORTHY MENTIONS: Zain Waylan (cousin) Robbie Wilkes (boyfriend)
CHILDHOOD: Danicca wasn't born to a mother that could keep her, but that didn't mean she wasn't meant to be raised in a loving home. A seventeen year old woman gave her up, and a twenty-seven year old woman who could not have children of her own was there to take the infant into her arms and never let go. After a bit of discussion that was just the final piece of months (bordering on years) of planning, Ari and Kiora Waylan gave Danicca a place in their home and a name they both agreed would suit her.
Danicca (quickly nicknamed Dani for cuteness and brevity's sake) was just short of being entirely spoiled for her first few years. By the time she reached the age of four, she was vocally determined about things she liked and things she wanted to do. Also at this age was when she suddenly became slightly left of center, attention-wise. This was because her parents, after much legality and preparation and a bit of fostering, had finally gotten to the point in the process where they could adopt a young boy by the name of Gabriel.
Gabriel was six years old and the quietest person Dani had ever met. For every hundred words she shouted, on average he maybe muttered one or two. This was perfectly fine by her, as that gave her more time to get her thoughts out of her head. And he was a very good listener, determined to be a good brother to this slightly bratty ball of energy. He nodded along or gave questioning looks as she rambled about her discoveries and ideas, and she understood exactly what he meant.
Growing up alongside each other, they had a balanced relationship and were basically best friends. Every time one was picked on at school, the other shortly found a way to defend their sibling. That changed ever so slightly, though, when Gabriel entered the eighth grade and Dani was still in upper elementary school. The age gap suddenly felt insurmountable, and there was very little that could be done about it.
As they drifted apart, a small family reunion of sorts happened at the holidays when Ari's sister-in-law visited with her son Zain. Dani and Zain were the same age and instantly hit it off, going on adventures and causing all sorts of mischief that not even Gabriel could keep up with. From then on, they kept in touch. First over letters and calls, then as they got older, over text message and video calls. Zain became Dani's confidante, and they continued to talk through everything that happened after.
ADOLESCENCE: Dani was a late bloomer by multiple standards. Not only did she not develop hips or any other semblance of femininity until she was nearly fifteen, her abilities didn't manifest until around then either. She was talking to a kid at her lunch table when she suddenly made the exact noise she had been trying to figure out how to describe just moments before. That might have been ignored, if it weren't the sound of a bear growling. It especially could not be ignored after it got stuck as the only sound she could make. No one knew at the time that her freaking out over it and everyone else obsessing over it (therefore making her more freaked out) was what made the sound stick, but what they did know was that she either was pulling the worst practical joke of her life or something was wrong with her.
Not long after a simultaneous visit with the principal and the nurse, Dani's mother was called to the school to pick her up. Gabriel had left class as soon as he heard that his sister may be in trouble, and he made it to the administrative offices just minutes before their mother. Dani was calm enough to talk in her own voice after that, thanks to Gabriel.
The principal had a quiet word with Kiora, and then Dani was sent home. A few days later, on Saturday, there was a knock at the door. Things had been normal, but with an underlying tension that made Dani scared to discuss anything that had happened at school. The visitor would shortly explain why that was.
Dani was different. Special. So many words that were meant to make her family feel better about where she was going. But those just irritated her. Frustrated, she finally said, "So I'm a freak?" Without pausing long enough to let anyone answer, she smiled. "Cool."
Her first year at the academy was chaotic, to say the best of it. She was a troublemaker and the most abrasive she had ever been. Mostly she just missed her family, and was trying to hide how small she felt in a school for powerful people. But of course that didn't mean anything to those she angered. She cut her leg open trying to hide from an electrokinetic that she had managed to Nair the eyebrows off of during Geometry, and that's one of the more tame stories from that time.
She got into so many kinds of trouble over the years that come senior year and college prospects, she realized she had gotten herself into a tight spot. So she curbed her enthusiasm for pranks and arguments, focusing that energy instead on her studies. It worked well enough to grant her admission to the local college, at least.
When she graduated, her family was there to take her out for dinner. Only Zain was unsurprised to find a boyfriend had been dragged along.
ADULTHOOD: Dani has thus far spent almost one year as what could loosely be called "an adult". Some things have gone more smoothly than others. School has gone smoothly, as has her relationship. She's getting general education out of the way and is trying to learn how to actually talk to a significant other. Another person she's actually talking to is her biological mother. That's where things have gone less smoothly.
Mitsu reached out to Danicca on her eighteenth birthday, March 14th. Nothing was sealed, communication was there to be had at any time, but Dani never felt like it was a good idea and Mitsu was never quite ready. There was definitely some built up tension, and it has barely dissipated in the months since. But hearing she had a four year old sister? That brought some enthusiasm into things.
She hasn't exactly told anyone, though. Dani doesn't like the prospect of talking about her feelings, and the longer she puts it off the harder it seems like it's gonna be to talk about not only the situation but why she hasn't told anyone about the situation. It's absolutely a disaster waiting to happen.
This year is definitely going to be an interesting one, as far as she sees it.
SAMPLE:
Reece was several kinds of offended at Belle's insinuation that she never had fun. "I have plenty of fun," she replied, though her volume was significantly lower than it probably would have been were it anyone else. It was like she hadn't been at the same house, in the same room, playing the same sleepover games for the last few weeks. Reece cleared her throat softly and continued the train of thought at a more human, less mouselike volume."You remember that pillow fight? That was fun!"
All signs of irritation or frustration were replaced with concern for her friend when Belle elaborated very vaguely upon her question. She stood and crossed to Belle's bed as the other girl took another drink from a brown bottle. Reece was learning she didn't like Belle's way of coping with her Gift, but she knew it was a bad argument to start right now. Instead, she just sat delicately on the edge of Belle's bed and frowned in concern. Her chest tightened a bit as she spoke, worried what the answer to her question would be.
"Belle... Do you, umm." She took a breath, rethinking her wording. "Belle, are you worried you may have done something you didn't want to?" She didn't know where this was leading for sure, but she had a sneaking suspicion Omega's current pushing against her walls had something to do with it. Reece wasn't sure she wanted to see.
Are you sure? You enjoyed it well enough, I thought. Omega whispered inside her head. Reece ignored the demon, opting to play with her shadow in a nervous sort of worrying habit. Stretch, contract, wave, smooth. Tiny movements to her shadow only noticeable upon close inspection. Realizing what she was doing and how that might have hurt Belle in such close proximity, she stopped herself abruptly. "I guess what I'm saying is, are you okay?"
