Mercedes Darcelle Allen
FACE CLAIM: Daria Sidorchuk
---------------------------------
AGE: 18
GENDER: Female
ORIENTATION: Heterosexual
POSITION: College Student
POWER: Empathy
Mercedes has the ability to feel the emotions and desires of others. She constantly feels the emotions of others and can read people's feelings just by standing within close proximity to them. She has yet to find a way to completely mute others emotions, but can dull their effects on her own emotions. Unlike emotions, desires are only felt if she's looking for them. Recently, she's been able to read people's emotions who are as far as a football field away from her by thinking hard about the individual. In order to get a more in depth reading of people, she must physically touch them. When touching them she can hear "echoes" of thoughts related to certain emotions or see glimpses of images or memories causing the specific emotion. The most she can experience is hearing a sentence or seeing glimpses of memories, not anywhere near the extent of telepathy. When she is using her abilities she tends to close her eyes to cancel out any distractions.
LIMITATIONS:
Her range of ability is growing a bit larger as she gains control. Currently she can reach anybody up to a football field away if she knows the person personally. The closer the person is to her the stronger she can feel their emotions. If somebody in the building is overemotional (positively or negatively) she can find it hard to concentrate on the task at hand. If she's sleeping she can even be woken up by such emotions.
SIDE-EFFECTS:
If she concentrates on her ability for long periods of time she can get serious migraines that last anywhere from thirty minutes to hours. Mercedes isn't able to enter areas with a lot of heightened emotions. Places such as hospitals, cemeteries, and even concerts can easily overwhelm her. If she looses control of how loud others' thoughts are it can cause various reactions depending on the situation. If she's experiencing sadness beyond her control she will cry profusely, often ending up in the fetal position. In madness she will attack anything or anyone close to her, and even though she's never killed anybody when this happens she has come close. In happiness she tends to act boldly and lustfully. These "fits" all have similar symptoms. A cloudy sheen will cover her eyes and she mumbles any thoughts, that come across her mind. She passes out when it becomes too much for her to handle, and when she wakes Mercedes never has any recollections of her actions afterwards and tends to have nosebleeds, dizziness, and blackouts the hours prior depending on the severity of "fit". She's only experienced these fits a handful of times since she's gained more control over her powers.
HEIGHT: 5'6
HAIR COLOR: Red
EYE COLOR: Light Brown
MISC: She has a thumb-sized birthmark on her left hip that she's a bit self-conscious about. Her hair is naturally curly.
PERSONALITY:
Independence is essential to Mercedes, which often makes her aggravated by her powers. Once you get past her detached, unemotional exterior she's really a kind hearted person that will go out of her way to help another. She loves to make people laugh and cheer people up and it makes her feel good to make others feel good. She's not one to expect anything in return. She's very unconventional and always full of excitement, always looking to make life fun. She pays extreme attention to detail, and hates the mundane day to day repetitive details. She likes learning and researching different and interesting topics.
Mercedes likes having her own way. Her stubbornness sometimes causes her failure, but she will continue to do something her way even though others have proved it is wrong, she is a very smart person and knows she's wrong but she will continue just because it is her way, She's very fixed in opinion and stubborn when confronted. Despite her stubbornness and fixed opinion, she'll never impose her ideas on others, and has respect for everybody's differences. She tries to not let emotions intervene with her decisions, but she's been known to let her sensitive side win occasionally.
She generally is a sarcastic person. Almost anything she says involves dry humor. Unfortunately she may come across mean spirited to people who are less familiar with her.
SECRET(S): She has many underlying insecurities that wonder if other people accept her for who she is, she has a rough relationship with her parents and hasn't spoken to them hardly at all since she's come to the school
FATHER: Robert, Allen
MOTHER: Marcy, Allen
SIBLINGS: n/a

CHILDHOOD: Mercedes is the product of a college professor and world renowned surgeon. They expected nothing less than perfection from her. Mercedes took their expectations flawlessly. She was reading and comprehending Shakespeare by the time she was nine, she took on two instruments by the age of 5 and mastered them at 8, she could fluently speak English, French, and Spanish by the third grade, and that's just scratching the surface of what all she can do. She's smarter than the average person, perhaps borderline genius, but she wasn't influenced by any powers, she was influenced by her parent's vice grip on how she was living her life.
The only TV she was allowed to watch were documentaries, she was home schooled, her parents hired a personal teacher to giver her lessons, and she had little to no social life, the only kids her age she was able to talk to were sons and daughters of her parent's friends. Mercedes didn't quite like her living conditions, but didn't complain. She didn't want to fall out of her parent's good graces.
ADOLESCENCE:
It wasn't until her powers developed that she got a taste of what the real world was like. They came a little over a month after she turned 11. In the beginning she had absolutely no control over her ability. She would black out and have one of her "fits" at least once a week, sometimes five times a week. Her parents didn't know what to do with her. They came to recruit her a day or two after she showed signs of developing her powers. Her parents were not happy at all that their prodigy was being taken away, but there was nothing they could do.
At the School Mercedes learned how to be normal. She realized how much her parents were keeping from her and resented them for it. She turned into the sarcastic witty child her parents had no need for. The first time she was able to go back home she did, and her parents were disgusted with the girl their daughter had become. Since then she refuses to visit them. She tends to be more reserved around her piers, always smiling or saying something sarcastic but never letting anyone in. On rare occasions she's known to console and help her classmates if she feels they need help, but she'll never admit it and gets highly offended if somebody mentions her good deeds.
SAMPLE:
"Can I go into the woods mother?" came the voice of a younger version of me, just a small, innocent child.
"Why on earth would you want to do such a stupid thing?" came the cold and detached voice of my mother.
"Because it looks lonely."
She looked down at me then, her expression one of... confusion? Disappointment? I couldn't tell. She bent down eye level with me. Her face only a few inches from mine. "Why do you say that?"
"B-because it doesn't sing," I stuttered, fiddling with my hands and unable to maintain eye contact. Even at this age I had known that I had said something that she didn't like.
"Susan," she started, taking two fingers and lifting up my chin so that my warm, amber eyes were forced to meet her grey, steely ones.
"Where did you ever get the notion that the woods were able to sing?"
"I-I, I don't know," I whispered, my lower lip trembling.
She then pinched my chin between her pointer finger and thumb. "You don't know?" she asked, pinching my chin tighter.
"N-no! No I d-don't!" I exclaimed, tears welling in my eyes as my chin started to hurt.
"Manners child! Use your manners!" she snapped, tightening her hold.
"No, ma'am! No, ma'am I don't know!" I cried, tears streaming down my small face.
She then let go of me, not an ounce of remorse in her expression. "You don't know? Oh, my poor, naive little Susan. Never say something unless you know why," she hummed, whipping a tear off of my chubby cheek, a surprising motherly act that we both knew was just that. An act.
She just stared at me for moment, thinking hard about something. Then, she abruptly stood up to her full height and took my lunchbox off of the counter. "I will take you into the woods after school if that is what you wish," was what she said, handing me my lunchbox and leading me out the door for my first day of school.
