Morrigan Tara Lafayette
FACE CLAIM: Katie Cassidy
---------------------------------
AGE: 24, 1991
GENDER: Female
ORIENTATION: Bisexual
POSITION: College student, because she STILL hasn't learned her lessons properly. She's lucky she's in college by now.
POWER: Darkness Manipulation
Her darkness manipulation can be split into several parts.
Shadow manipulation - Morrigan can manipulate shadows. However, the shadows must already exist. She cannot create shadows, but she can manipulate naturally occurring shadows. However the more shadow she manipulates the faster she becomes tired. As she sort of coaxes the shadows into doing her bidding with gentle hand motions, it takes longer for them to respond to her will the more shadow she is trying to manipulate. For example, manipulating the shadow of a twenty story building would take about ten times longer for them to respond and for her to manipulate it than if she manipulated her own shadow. Her own shadow would be able to be manipulated within a few minutes.
Darkness Healing and Corresponding Aura Sight - Every person has things in their life that make their emotional state a little shaky. Now you wouldn't think that would have anything to do with shadows, but it does. It does because of the way the issues manifest to Morrigan. When she looks at a person, she can see them. Or she can focus a bit more and because of her ability to heal she can see their emotional aura. Now what does the emotional aura look like to her? Different colours for each emotion. But what she's noticed is that if someone's done something seriously wrong, or they're just in a very foul mood, it creates a shadow. So basically each colour is like a tendril of smoke curling into the air around that person. The black tendril can suck in the other colours eventually and that isn't good.
Morrigan's darkness healing ability allows her to lessen that shadowy tendril. That blackness. She can basically turn that blackness into a shade of grey. It's kind of like therapy or a healer. She can't take them away completely, as there would still be part of the shadow aura left. She also can't take away their thoughts about it completely. They have to think about it. What Morrigan's ability does is basically act like a painkiller. When she lessens an emotional shadow, it means that person can think about whatever issue or event caused that darkness in their emotional aura, and they can think about it with less pain involved. However, whatever amount of emotional shadow Morrigan takes away from someone else is brought back onto herself. If she lessens someone's shadow, that bit of shadow comes back to haunt her. The pain will be inflicted on herself instead of the other person. Matter is neither created nor destroyed after all. Morrigan then must deal with the pain herself, which will likely involve looking at the ugly parts of herself the shadow dredges up when it transfers. She doesn't see the other person's issue or pain, but when she takes on their shadow, they can take the smallest thing she's done and turn it into something large and awful that can weigh her down with guilt. She's an empath's worst nightmare. Sometimes, people who hang around her gain shadows themselves. It can cloud their auras and she sees that if she looks.
So basically she can manipulate the shadows you can see. But she can also manipulate the shadows she can see. And if she wants to help someone emotionally, she has to act as a bit of a sacrificial lamb.
LIMITATIONS:
She can't manipulate shadows that are too large. For example, the twenty story building shadow I mentioned before is her limit and even takes so long it isn't even worth trying to manipulate it. Any bigger though, and she'd probably go unconscious for a little bit just trying. Manipulating it would be that tiring on her body that it would demand rest immediately. As for emotional shadows, the most Morrigan can take away at one time is half of the shadow. Less if the emotional impact is bigger. For example, if someone had killed someone and felt incredibly guilty about it and was borderline suicidal, she could probably only take a quarter of that shadow at most. This is because she takes on whatever shadow she takes away. It then reflects on her own personality and she can believe horrible things about herself. She's quite the pessimist sometimes.
SIDE-EFFECTS:
-exhaustion depending on how many shadows she controls or how big they are
-possibility of unconsciousness if she doesn't stop when she's too tired, or tries to manipulate shadows that are too large
-headaches
-nosebleeds
-nausea (if tired, and also at feeling the bad emotions from others)
-general disgust with herself sometimes
-emotional shadows taking over and making her kinda evil sometimes
-loss of sanity
HEIGHT: 5'8"
HAIR COLOR: Dark brown.
EYE COLOR: Blue.
MISC: Business attire like dress pants or a suit jacket are popular with her, as well as leather jackets and jeans. It depends on what she feels like. She honestly really likes the uniform of Bellefonte Academy too. She likes feeling official, and like she's part of something, possibly a carry-over from the Inherited. For some reason she also occasionally wears sweaters. Her fashion sense is honestly a bit odd, probably because it wasn't a focus in the Inherited. All that stuff about not partaking with human influence. Old habits die hard.
She has her ears pierced, but that's about it. As far as scars go, she has one on the back of one of her legs. It's an inch long, from training when she was a kid. She slipped up and her guide accidentally scarred her. It's something she wears with pride, as it's a reminder she was a good student.
PERSONALITY: Morrigan's a bit of a odd one. She enjoys the sight of blood and darkness, but also just deep thoughts. And pizza. She's hard to explain. She dislikes weakness as a general rule, although there are exceptions to the rule. She also dislikes humans. Doesn't matter who they are at the current time. She just detests them. Morrigan has a tendency to come off a bit arrogant and prideful. If she respects you, then it will probably be a sort of begrudging respect. She desires to be the best at anything she wishes, but mostly she just wants to be the strongest. One of her fears is losing her powers though. She saw some mutants lose powers when everything went wonky and it scared her. Deep down, she also fears that the darkness will one day completely consume her and there will be no hope of ever coming back. Yes, she isn't completely gone, at least by her standards. Part of her is this light, regular person. But the version of herself sculpted by taking in so many shadows is the most prevalent. Meaning she's kinda depressed with the edge of a killer.
If Morrigan doesn't like someone, they'll know it. Sometimes she will be brutally honest about what she thinks of them, and other times it will be slightly veiled comments about their inferiority to her. She does seem to enjoy honesty from others though. Although if said person is human, it doesn't matter.
SECRET(S): That one day she completely loses herself to her darkness and never resurfaces.
FATHER: It's completely unknown, but his name was Heimdall (Olivers). After the Norse god of light and protection ironically.
MOTHER: Bris (Lafayette) (48)
SIBLINGS: She doesn't know she has any, but they are as follows: Macha (Olivers) (14), Jacob (LaFayette) (9) and Aileen Carter (20)
WORTHY MENTIONS: Dylan (32) - caregiver, Heimdall - guide
CHILDHOOD: Morrigan, then named Tara, was born to her mother Bris but Bris belonged to a large cult for mutants simply named the Clan. They believed mutants were superior to humans. As was the custom, she was given up to be raised by the community. She spent her early years being trained in the ways of the martial arts chosen to help train power control among the Clan. She soaked up the information like a sponge.
All she really wanted to do was be good to the rest of the Clan and make their lives easier...which kind of explains why her power manifested as it did. She paid attention to her teachers, learned well. But it also instilled in her a fair amount of bad feeling towards humans. Kind of a disdain for the lesser of the species.
ADOLESCENCE: When her powers manifested, Morrigan was thought to be a sort of healer. She lessened the psychological impact when a child died. The caregiver mourned the child, and Morrigan wanted to help. She took on part of the caregiver's emotional shadow. This was when she was thirteen. They celebrated and it was wonderful. She wasn't given her name right away, and then the day after her manifestation, just before her ceremony, she walked purposely into the nearest town and killed a human. She was only seen by a couple of people. One of them was a guide for the Clan.
When Tara came back, she was given the name Morrigan after a god of death, fate and the underworld. And she was told never to come back to the Clan. They may hold disdain for humans as lesser creatures, but they never killed them. It was an unspoken rule that Morrigan broke. As for the other witness, the court ruled on the case privately, and they pled insanity. She was most definitely not in her right mind. She was remanded into the custody of St Bethany for rehabilitation (they wanted to be sure to be the ones watching the mutant). She was sent to the British school for mutants and not let off campus. In fact, she was mostly just allowed to go to her classes. For a time, she was on medication in the hopes that it would clear her mind and calm her down. They were trying to understand her ability in the hopes of helping her, but medication was a somewhat temporary solution.
ADULTHOOD: They realized while she was at St Bethany's that her darkness was caused everytime she tried lessening the emotional shadow of another person. Every single time she made headway with socializing with other mutants (when she was allowed to socialize anyways), she eventually tried to help them with their own pain. And that's when her own condition worsened. They were finally able to tell her that this was happening and get it through her head that she shouldn't do it again, but by then they feared the damage was irreversible. They still don't know for sure whether she can come back from the amount of shadows she has partially absorbed.
She's been sent to Bellefonte Academy for a new start, but she's still not allowed off the campus. She has to go to therapy regularly. This is the part where they're trying to integrate her into mutant society. Another reason she's been sent to Bellefonte Academy? Now that the world knows about mutants, being anywhere near where she committed the murder is a bad idea. She was brought to the United States to help get her out of that volatile situation.
