"Hmm?" said Zoe at the question of makeup, looking over at Devyn for a few moments. She blinked, then realizing it, she blushed, averting her gaze. "I---I need to cover--I tried to," she gestured for a moment, seemed unable to grasp the word out of the air, and sighed in frustration. Finally she managed: "I like to look pretty, okay?" which was actually true. Zoe had possessed long, flowing hair with just a little curl to it, and she'd only recently chopped it all off. This did make her look more like the androgynous people she kept falling for, but it also made her feel decidedly less pretty overall, which had been part of the reason. She quickly decided that she couldn't let Devyn think she was that vain and added: "Plus, I thought for a while that I could use makeup as a sort of shield."
And maybe she could, with special makeup. She brushed the idea aside for now. There was no way she'd be able to figure that out on her own. No, it would take getting someone else involved, and that was a query that Zoe certainly didn't feel comfortable pursuing. Again, as so often was the case, she had photography to fall back on, and was soon looking at the various photographs that hung about her. Devyn had noticed the ones of her, which Zoe thought were actually fairly well done overall. True, Devyn almost looked like a boy in a few, but Zoe was half convinced that was what Devyn had been trying to do.
Of course, the spy thing had to come up, and Zoe flushed. "It's not really spying,' she argued weakly, knowing damn well that the excuse wouldn't hold. "And it's not like I really use most of the photographs. People usually figure out that I'm taking pictures of them. I like to ask them to pose too," she pointed at a few that were obviously students posing for her, including some that looked less artistic and more like Zoe had been bullied into taking "fun" photographs for other people, which was, of course, the case. Zoe was tempted to point out that Devyn had just done the same thing: taking her picture without asking, but she didn't have the courage. Instead she fidgeted, looking from Devyn to the photos.
"Do you like them?" she asked. She might as well have been asking "do you like me?" But she already knew the answer to that, even if she liked hearing it every so often.
