Kyle Efren Underly
FACE CLAIM: Nathan Smith (natewantstobattle)
---------------------------------
AGE: 18
GENDER: Male
ORIENTATION: Homosexual (Heavily Repressed)
POSITION: Bellefonte Academy Student - High School Senior
POWER: Perfect Pitch &True Ventriloquism
Perfect Pitch
Also known as "Intuitive Sonic Understanding" (but the name was getting too long). The basic idea is that the user has ears that have developed in such a way that he picks up sonic ways in a manner that is decidedly above the standard human. This mutation has altered both the various necessary parts of his ear as well as his brain, giving him the distinct ability to simply understand the way sound works better than most people.
This serves as a double-edged sword. For one thing, he can always determine pitch and range of any given sound, as well as having a decent understanding of direction and volume and other such details. If he's heard the sound before, then he has a better than average chance of identifying it. He's also capable of picking up subtle variations in the way people talk, which can generally be used to detect whether or not someone is lying. This only works whenever he hears someone, and anyone with solid control over their voice will probably be able to trick it. This ability also means that he can also match and modulate his voice in a way to perfectly match someone else's pitch, and he is never off key unless there's something affecting him (or he's doing it on purpose). This is also coupled with his training.
This also leaves him highly attuned to the sounds around him. People who speak or sing off-key can almost cause him physical harm, and he has a tendency to get almost distracted by various sounds, particularly if they're unusual.
LIMITATIONS:
- Ability requires actually hearing the sound; anything that impairs hearing would therefore mess with the ability.
- He does not have enhanced hearing. He has a wider range of what he can pick up sonically: he can pick up pitch and intonation and so forth, but he can't hear a pin drop several feet away or anything along those lines.
- Anyone with sufficient training can circumvent some of the deduction powers that come along with the ability.
- He still required significant vocal and musical training to truly master the ability
SIDE-EFFECTS:
- He is much more easy to distract via sounds. Pitch issues really bother him.
- It's a lot easier for him to get headaches from various sounds.
- Unusual and/or new sounds will distract him even more than the normal person.
True Ventriloquism
This is essentially a version of sound manipulation that applies only to his voice. Through an innate understanding of how voice and sound works, Kyle can "throw" his voice to various objects or places. The sound will originate from the actual location as opposed from Kyle or any other source. He does have to utilize his throat, but he is not actually "speaking without moving his lips." He is essentially using an understanding and a uniquely developed portion of his brain to create sound somewhere else.
to do this, he must focus on where he wants the sound to go. It helps tremendously if there's something that can create sound. His voice is the easiest to use, but he can strain and utilize other sounds. Through this concentration, he effectively causes the sound to originate through somewhere else.
LIMITATIONS:
- This can create sound to some degree, but it needs a nearby source to really work right.
- Kyle cannot create a sound any louder than the original source. This only changes the origin point and orientation of the noise, not the actual volume. (It can work and does work with the main ability).
SIDE-EFFECTS:
- If he's losing control, his voice or other sounds will come from random locations.
- Utilizing his own voice will cause him to "lose his voice" at a much greater speed than usual.
- As usual, enough strain will cause headaches.
Welcome to "Where Are They Now?" the series that looks into those stars and celebrities from years past and starts digging around. We're the ones who answer that nagging question of "What happened to that guy?" Whether they've hidden from the spotlight, crashed and burned, or are fresh in our minds, we're the ones to bring you that answer. Tonight, we look at Kyle Underly.
Most will remember this child star from his starring role on the Disney sit-com Uniquely Gifted, where he played the youngest of a family of Filipino immigrants to the United States who all happened to have superpowers. Like so many Disney stars, Kyle proved to be multi-talented, singing and dancing throughout the duration of the series. One of his songs "Feeling It 4 U" even cracked the charts, doing especially well with the target demographic. Disney would make note of his unique gifts and throw him into several projects, cross showcasing him on their other projects. His character, Freddy, would show up in nearly every hit Disney show of the time: Wizards of Waverly Place, Hannah Montana, and several more. Kyle would also star in the made for TV Disney Channel film Last of the Magic along with the film based on his original series.
Kyle's story begins even before his birth, as even his parents' love story seemed like something written for television. His father, a Mormon missionary, met his mother, a Filipino native, in her homeland. They fell in love despite their differences, moving back to the States. There they had Kyle, who soon showed unique promise and acting ability.
Lailani Underly (Kyle's Mother): "Kyle was always running around and putting on performances. He'd just love to dress up and show off for the family and the local kids. Of course, he had to do everything, including singing and playing the instruments. It wasn't a matter of, like, pushing him, like so many parents do. Kyle just naturally wanted to do things, to act and to play instruments.
Stone Underly (Kyle's Father): "Yeah, Kyle learned to play the piano pretty quick. We had one of those in the home, got it from my grandmother. He then insisted on guitar lessons and even learned the drums to some degree. Oh, and the dancing. he insisted on dancing. Other kids would be off playing, but Kyle was learning an instrument or dancing or singing or performing. The kid started working even before he got that commercial."
Said commercial happened to be a shot for the newest Legend of Zelda game. Kyle would dress up in Link's costume and fight his way through a field, the shots alternating between reality and the fields of Hyrule. All the while, the four year old sang out the official theme to the popular game. He became an instant hit.
Jackson Forth (Disney Casting Director): "Of course we recognized Kyle from the commercial. And the followup that of course happened. And the Snicker's commercial. The kid was already becoming a household name even before he auditioned for Gifted. He literally blew the other applicants out of the water. There was just no touching this kid."
So Kyle Underly's dream of success started early, his star rising fast and rising furiously. However, some people weren't quite as impressed. Early on, costars would speak about Kyle's personality:
Oscar Downing (costar): "Yeah, Kyle could act. And sing. And play. And dance. And he also wasn't afraid of letting everyone know it. You know how he always seemed really comfortable with roles as a hotshot at the center of the spotlight? Yeah, he really was like that. He was the only one of us who had his own trailer. Apparently his parents didn't even, like, negotiate for him."
Penny Yesley (costar): "Kyle was cute too, which just made matters worse. Like, you liked him at first, because he was just so charismatic and stuff. You couldn't help it. Plus, that work ethic made you just go 'whoa.' He was literally a star at like, eight years old. Who does that? I'm about four years older than him, and I almost had a crush on him. He was just that compelling. It didn't help that he'd flirt with every female on staff. it was ridiculous, and cute. And also just sort of compounded with his ego thing."
Lailani Underly (mother): "Kyle's always been a ladies' man. He had his first girlfriend right after the commercial, and he was just so proud of it. I think they're just drawn to him, since he's so driven and all. He did get to be a bit bigheaded later on though, particularly with girls. I can still remember him telling me that he had to dump one of his girlfriends because 'she's not pretty enough to photograph, mom.' Just like that. He was, ten, I want to say? And she had to be about twelve or thirteen. And there he is, dumping her because she's not pretty enough. I don't know whether I should be proud of that or, like, appalled."
Kyle did run through the gambit, having several high profile relationships at a relatively young age. He seemed to manage his romantic relationships as carefully as his professional ones, often dating older girls or those that were more famous or about to explode. Some have stated that starlets got their big break from being his arm candy.
Trinity Styles (Disney star): "Oh yeah, I totally went out with Kyle. And yes, I can confirm that he had that diva attitude everyone says he has. It was a lot of bluster though. Sometimes I think the whole being the center of attention thing got to him. It was like there was something eating away at him inside, and he just seemed... I don't want to say tortured or anything. He could be real sweet when he wanted to, even if, like, sometimes it felt like it was all for appearances. He was really into that. He always looked good too, which is definitely a plus."
And so Kyle's star rose. His catchy single hit the top of the charts, and it seemed as if there would be no stopping the young man. Uniquely Gifted had just been renewed for its fifth season when all of a sudden, Kyle vanished. One episode, his character was on the show, getting involved in a plot involving the family learning about new gifted, and the next he'd simply vanished. Sources say that this can be traced to one particular day of shooting.
Oscar Downing (costar): "Yeah, Kyle, like, started acting weird. Weirder. We'd been shooting and there were some of the extras like, humming in the background and stuff. And Kyle kept asking me if it was bothering me, talking about just how grating it was. I thought he'd been joking at first but, like, he just kept going. After a bit, he finally got up and told the extras to stop humming. Then, and this is the part no one else believes, he, like... it's like his voice came from this locker on set, mumbling something about how talentless hacks should be seen and not heard. We finished up shooting, and he was edgier than normal. But the next day, well, nobody saw him."
Stone Underlay (father): "It's simple: the stress of the job got to Kyle. He was thirteen flipping years old. Of course he was going to crack. So we pulled him from the set and sent him off to boarding school. We picked one in Canada, so he could get away from all that Hollywood stuff."
But we all know that Kyle's career didn't end there. Three years later, a teenage Kyle started showing up on YouTube with the handle UnderKyle17. He started with rock covers of pop songs and other "nerdy" songs, even once dressing like a Pokemon trainer. Since then, he's been producing a few videos a month, mostly music videos, but the occasional skit or performance would come on. His latest video talks about his returning to America to "have a senior year in an American high school."
So are we looking for a return of Kyle Underly, child star? Will we have another hit on the charts? Another breakout star from Disney's roster? Or is Kyle going to drift off into the unknown, becoming just one more piece of meat chewed up by the machine. We'll have to watch his videos and click to subscribe. Next, on "Where Are They Now?"
SAMPLE:
"Hey there, my name's Kyle Underly and I'm your," Kyle points at the camera, grinning toothily, "next Security Squad member."
The camera backs up to show a lanky young man, gives the camera a winning smile and a wink. "Not bad, right? I'm sure some of you recognize me, and yes: I am that Kyle. Autographs will come later. So I'm sure you're wondering if my power's the same as the one I had on the show right?" The camera cuts to footage with a "Disney Channel" Label on it, showing a younger version of Kyle lifting up a corner of a building and then freezing something with ice breath.
"Sorry to disappoint, but my ability's way different than that." Kyle bounces his brows and then snaps. His mouth remains closed, but sound seems to come from off stage: "Hear that? That's me speaking. I know your mind is freakin' blown right now. It's called True Ventriloquism. I also have this cool thing called Perfect Pitch, which I could only show by singing for you," Kyle winks, and the video cuts to him with a guitar around his neck. He starts playing it, showcasing some skill at working the instrument. It goes for a bit before he starts singing: apparently a hard rock version of Taylor Swift's "Blank Space," done almost too well. He only does this for about a minute or so before the video cuts again.
"So I know what you're thinking: well, that's cool and you're hot and all, but how does that transfer into keeping people safe. Well, you're obviously not thinking about it. I can totally distract other people so all the folks with badder abilities can just go knocking some heads together," video cuts to a field, Kyle ducking next to another student who smiles too broadly at the camera. A gruesome looking guy wearing a SPECTRE uniform stalks forward. The camera hones in on his face, and he's snarling. The camera then zooms on Kyle's face. He winks. It zooms out, and a sound snaps the SPECTRE agent's attention behind him. this gives the smiling kid enough time to throw his hands out and light the guy on fire.
"Plus, the pitch thing means that I'll know if someone's lying when we interrogate them." The video cuts to Kyle wearing a sharp suit, standing next to another teenager, a girl this time, also wearing a suit. They're approaching the SPECTRE agent, who's now tied to the chair. Kyle paces, looking cool, and his partner approaches: "Where did you hide the bomb?" she demands. The SPECTRE agent snarls. She slaps him. The guy turns and smiles.
"It's along the west wall, toots," he says. The girl turns to Kyle. The camera zooms on him, and he tosses his head back.
"He's lying: give him the screws, babe."
And then it cuts back to the original vid, showing Kyle. "So I'll obviously be helpful to you. I hope to see you soon. Definitely looking forward to working with the lovely ladies on Security." And the camera ends with a wink and a freeze-frame.
