He doesn’t know what else to do, "So I guess I have the ability to change”, he paused knowing how crazy he sounded, “into a bear.”
"Right," he paused and look off for a moment, “Well, wrong. You can turn into virtually any species of bear. It’s just that of a black bear is as far as you’ve gotten. Any of the eight main species are yours for the taking”
"What?”, Lorenzo had no idea. How did this man know what had been happening to him?
“Although you can change into any bear species, there are condtions,” the man explained.
Lorenzo was shocked beyond belief. The boy had thought he was going crazy. Full on mental insanity is what he thought was happening. Hallucinations, that’s all. He gestured for the man to continue on. This wasn’t how he had expected this thing to go.
“Alright, so I'm not too clear on why the analyzing thing is so vital, but it is,” He paused and looked down once again at his notes, "I am no expert and don't know the exact science, but from what I've been told your brain is able to process all the information needed in order for you to change into a bear. The amazing part is that your body is able to re-wire it's self to the new body of the species. The parts of your brain that deal with certain body parts still function but just the ones of the newly formed animal. Also, when a tail sprouts and what not: your brain and body adjusts accordingly"
"Wow. Thats a lot of science. Too much", Lorenzo admitted. A lot was racing through his mind, he didn’t know what to think.
"These are things you need to know", The man explained, “The more knowledge that you have, the easier it is for you to change. Basically just creates less information for your brain to process.”
The man let it all set in for Enzo. He knew it took awhile to process and understand fully.
Before the boy could say anything he added, “There is just one more thing. They just wanted me to explain the reason I said the reports described a bear cub specifically. When you shift, you acquire all the abilities and physiologies of the specific animal. In bear form, your size is proportion to your human form, through calculation with the species' 'age to growth' rate. For example, if you are transforming into a polar bear, your age would be put into polar bear years and your size, in canine form, is based off of ratio. With the different variations of bear, come different growth rates, so depending on the species is how large you will proportion out to be.There are a lot of vague areas in this ability that I don't understand, like the physiological aspect and stuff but ya' know, I'm only the messenger".
LIMITATIONS:
He continued to read and then started, "Alright, says here that as far as limitations go...," He trails of and continues to read. " Ok, ok. It's going to be a constant fight for you not to let the mind of the bear take over. It will be constantly prodding at you and when your exhausted, or if you just give in while in animal form. When you give in, you take on them ind of the bear and all rational, or human, thinking leaves your mind. You cannot change back at will if this takes over. If it takes over, you will morph back into human eventually, usually when you run out of all that mutant juice you have in you. Your human conscience has to fight to gain enough control to change back if you have the strength. You're constantly going to have to learn to control it and resist more, but there are always slip ups.
You does not have to ability to communicate with other animals in your conscious human-mind. If however, you gives into the mind of the bear, whatever instincts to communicate with other animals, or any natural instincts of the animals, at all, with prevail."
The man gasps with a smirk as if he had been out of breath, "That was a lot". Enzo still sits with a puzzled expression and that "wheels are turning" type feel is radiating as he tries to understand.
SIDE-EFFECTS:
The man clears his throat. He wags his finger and says, "But thats not all," letting out a slight chuckle as he looks at the boys serious, yet dumbfounded expression. "You have side effects just like every mutant."
“If you are in animal form for too long, you can become grumpy and sometimes aggressive if the mood is there... Ha, doesn’t seem like much will change as far as that goes.” The man tried to lighten the mood, but all there was silence.
“Says here that your personality with now change dramatically, as you take on similar traits to your form. You will often has a hard time not making impulsive and irrational decisions, just from being used to that mind set when an animal. Certain species of bear make this worse depending on the known over demeanor of the kind."
He continued, "After changing back, you will become dizzy, nauseous, and fatigued from his body re-adjusting. During the process of changing back, your outside appearance is the first thing to change. As the process further and nears the end, your insides change back to those of a normal human. Again, this all depends on the animal being changed into and how similar the human anatomy and mind is to the certain animal. The over all process should be painful, but your mind is also changing to fit the new body so it goes numb. This leaves you fatigued and causes blackouts every time you change, which can cause headaches and other damaging symptoms. ”
He blurted about a series of questions, “How do you know all this? What am I? Why did you bring me here? What is this interview really about?”
The man raised his hands and gesture for his to calm down. "Relax. I know this a lot to take in such a short period of time. You are a mutant. Super human, if you will. There are many of you. Some with different powers from others. Anything from fire balls, flying, to moving objects with your mind, we have it."
Lorenzo raised a brow, "Mutants?" Even though he had extraordinary powers, it was strange to know that there were others. With different powers of there own. "You have it? Where? Are the all gathered into one giant prison or something?"
The man laughed, "Oh, nothing of the sorts. When you parents told you that that this was about transferring schools, they weren't lying. I've already contact them. We have gathered your things and you'll be coming with me."
A boy walks into a cold room, reluctance spread across his face. He is a rough 5’11 with a handsome face. Lanky body type, but not an ounce of fat: quick and well balanced but lacking in the raw strength department. Dark hair, longer on the top of closely cropped on the sides. Green eyes that turn more or less hazel as the seasons change. Dresses like a normal teen with a little more style; nothing too extravagant.
A man is waiting in other chair across the cold metal table. There are four windows, one for each wall that over looks the beautiful scenery that surrounds the small building. The clocks say it is the middle of the day but it appears to be nighttime.
Clearly the boy was irritated to be there, the man starts quickly with:
"State your name and age"
The boy sits in the chair and leans with his elbows on the table and hand on his forehead, "Look, my parents told me what’s going on. I don’t qualify to go to this special school or whatever. My grades are trash, I’m extremely impulsive, and i’ve always been into some sort of trouble for most of my life. I am not preppy boarding school material. "
The man sits with a blank expression as if he done this millions of times; which he has. He says nothing to the boy for a moment and then says, "I said, state your name and age".
Lorenzo is confused and wants to blow up. He doesn’t really have a good assessment of the situation, which frustrates him. After a moment of more silence he gives in. He is hoping that the man will see that he doesn’t belong at this new school, "Lorenzo Frijas. 17 years of age."
The man runs his fingers through his slicked-back grease filled hair, "You're quite the little fighter aren't you? I haven’t even told you what is going on and your already trying to convince me of things. If you don’t want to be here, just cooperate, we can be finished".
Lorenzo eyes him angrily but stays relecantly silent.
The man nods in approval. He looks down at the file in his hands and reads, “Tokalo. That’s Native American isn’t it?”
"Wait how did yo—“ Lorenzo was surprise on how the man knew his middle name but he answered, “Yes, I come from the native tribe of Aleuts. We are the original tribe of Alaska."
The man glances out into the darkness then down at his watch. It reads 12:07 p.m. and he looks back into what looks like the night. "Mhm. Is it always like this?” He asks gesturing towards the window.
Lorenzo glances out the window and rolls his eyes, “There a cycle. Worst part of living here.”
The man at first give him a strange look but then understands. "Tell me about growing up."
Lorenzo almost rolls his eyes but stops himself. "What do you want to know? We lived just right outside of Juno for our entire lives. Small town everyone knows everyone type thing. Mom and Dad raised me the best they could. Taught me right from wrong for the most part. Ran track and cross country since I was young. Play lacrosse too, but thats basically implied. Uhh... I don't know what else to tell. Pretty standard childhood not gonna lie."
The man raises a brow, "Says here you are quite the asshole. Looks like you fight... A lot"
Enzo rolls his eyes this time, "Ok. The Jessie K. thing does not count. He punched first--"
The man stops him, "Says here, again, YOU punched first"
He stops shifts his eyes back a forth a few times, "Well, I punched first but he integrated it. It was a playful school yard fight."
The man pulls out a photo of a boy in the hospital and uses it towards Enzo, "The only way I can know about this is because you beat him to a bloody pulp out of a fit or rage. How you weren't expelled is beyond me."
Lorenzo kept quiet, but the way the man said 'bloody pulp' gave him a slight boost of confidence.
He glances down at his papers again flipping a couple pages and says, "I can tell by what it says here that you've been raised in a fairly traditional Native American home".
Lorenzo nods. "Yeah. My father is brother to our tribe's leader and my mother is the daughter of the town oracle. It’s not like we are isolated or anything. We live right outside of Juno and live normal lives. That only that’s different is our towns are ‘villages’ or ‘tribes’, depending on the size of the tribe.
The man smirks and questions with a raise of his brow, "Oracles huh?"
Enzo shrugs and replies, "Yeah they're basically useless now-a-days. Just for show really. You don't become an oracle unstill you’re an old hag, in my village. It's just an excuse to show honor some old lady..."
The man sarcastic states, "Mhm, I can see you have a lot of respect for these oracles…” He flips another page, “Tell about growing up.”
As the man asks these questions Lorenzo was thoroughly confused on the whole point of this interview and how it correlated to going to a new school, but didn't feel like fighting it now. It seemed important enough. "Well, uh... I had a pretty normal suburban life I guess… People get like tripped up when I tell them I live in a village. It is just a small town right outsie of the capital but for some stupid reason the chef wants us to refer to it as a village. Everyone knows everyone sort of thing.”
The man nods and Lorenzo continues, “ My parents were both good one I guess. I have a sister and a brother. Well, two brothers. Tyler had lung issues and died at only a couple weeks old"
"I'm sorry to hear that", the man apologizes, “My repects to you and your family”.
Lorenzo’s face sort of darkened, "Yeah thanks, its whatever… It's not like we bonded or anything while he was in intensive care".
The man abruptly changes the subject; “Says here locals have been spotting a lot of strange animal activity in your village. Especially place around the local high school, teen hangouts, and,” he pauses and he finishes reading what’s on the paper, “your home".
Lorenzo appears calm but he stomach sinks. How did they know? What is happening? Who is this man?
Feeling targeted and helpless Lorenzo retorts back, "Yeah they're a lot of animal sittings in Alaska... Nothing new there, bud"
He was short with the man and there was obvious sass in his voice, but he felt threatened by the mystery of the whole situation. He had been pulled out of school just to be talked to. This had to be more than trnaferring to a new school.
"Ah this is true, but there is just one itty-bitty thing that different..." The man says with a smile growing on his lips, "They've been appearing in broad daylight...Now before you say anything, I know that not all animals are nocturnal but it very lets say... unusual, for a wild bear cub to be roaming the streets of a village in the middle of the day without it mother. Also exhibiting what witnesses have called "unusual" and "strange" behavior".
Lorenzo eyes light up but his facial expression stayed blank. The man knew what had been happening to him in the past weeks. The change. He blurted about a series of questions, “How do you know all this? What am I? Why did you bring me here? What is this interview really about?”
"Now you know that I know, so explain to me what you know about what you can do", The man folded his hands in his lap and sat back. "Take your time. Just tell me what you know."
Lorenzo's eyes widen as big as they ever had and he exhales deeply. He decides to just quit the hostility and spit it out no matter how strange and uncomfortable he feels.
