Adrian Bartholomew Augustine
FACE CLAIM: Jamie Campbell Bower
---------------------------------
AGE: 19
GENDER: Male
ORIENTATION: Heterosexual
POSITION: College Student
POWER: Telepathy
Adrian has the ability to mentally receive and transmit information to other people's minds. Basically, what he can do is read the thoughts of other people, but also communicate the same way; the people he uses his ability on will hear his voice inside their head. He can pick up anyone's thoughts as long as they're not being blocked by using some kind of mental shield/block, and this is an ability he cannot turn off. He will constantly hear the thoughts of those around him. He can also dig deeper into someone's mind and look for information, though this is something people will generally feel as a slight tingling inside their mind, almost as if their brain is being tickled/lightly prodded.
Personally to Adrian, the constant voices is slowly making him feel like he's going insane. He feels like he never gets any time alone with his own thoughts, and the constant chattering makes it harder for him to focus on anything else. This has left him diving head first into any methods he can to tune the constant voices out and has been frequently turning to drugs and alcohol for the past few years.
LIMITATIONS:
- His abilities does not work on mindless beings such as robots, corpses, animated objects and the like.
- The range of his ability is limited to the length of a football field - sometimes only half, all depending on how exhausted he is. Considering how he cannot turn his ability off, there's no limit to how many people's minds he can read, although, with the sheer number, it grows harder in larger crowds to single out thoughts and will in most cases, sound like constant chattering. He can single out someone's thoughts if he focuses enough, but this takes a lot of effort and energy. (The more people around, the less effective his ability gets, as it can get harder to focus on a single target with all the extra noise. The larger groups, the more trouble he has, but that doesn't mean it's impossible for him to focus on one person at a time.)
- Will have trouble reading the mind of people who possess abilities such a s psychic shielding; They can either be immune or highly resistant. The same thing goes for people with a lot of willpower; They can shut him out, and if he pokes too deeply, people will notice that he's inside their head.
- The more intense the thought is, the louder Adrian will hear it. It kind of works the same as whispering - talking - yelling. This can override his mind/system with too much information, and thus, make him pass out for a set amount of time. (This goes both ways; receive and transmit)
SIDE-EFFECTS:
- Nearly constant headaches that often develop into migraines. The migraines can cause nausea, nosebleeds and eventually fainting. (In extreme cases; external and internal bleeding)
- Restlessness, insomnia and mood swings are also common side-effects Adrian experience with his ability.
- Mental and physical exhaustion is something Elena experiences on a daily basis.
- The only method he's found that lessens the effect of his ability, meaning that the constant roar of voices gets tuned out, is by using various drugs, either alcohol or pills - which he divulges into frequently.
HEIGHT: 6'ft
HAIR COLOR: Blonde
EYE COLOR: Blue
MISC: Adrian tends to wear comfortable clothing, such as t-shirts, shirts and low-cut jeans. Despite his slender, yet somewhat athletic build, he usually seem to wear clothes one size too big, making them appear as if they're hanging from his body, which in turn makes him look a lot more scrawny than what he really is. He doesn't spend a whole lot of time taking care of his looks, so his blonde hair, which is usually a little bit longer than what it should be, is generally messy and looks as if it's in a constant state of "I just got out bed".
PERSONALITY: The thing people notice first about Adrian is that he seems to go on a "crazy streak" sometimes, which is thanks to his ability. He often seems to tune out of the world around him and can more often than not end up saying something completely far fetched and out of the blue. Thanks to this, he has been from an early age labeled as the kind of person you're better off staying away from completely. This behavior is usually lessened whenever he's drunk or high - which honestly, happens quite a lot.
Despite this, Adrian is by all means, a normal teenage boy, albeit a little mature for his age. He tends to have a grim, pessimistic view of the world, but firmly believes in being honest, unless it's better not to be. His morals are a little screwed up, and he often acts in ways he thinks is the right thing to do, although not everyone might agree with him. He isn't particularly shy, but not very talkative either. He prefers the company of himself or smaller groups of people.
Adrian is the kind of person few people notice. He both speaks and moves about silently, with a grace that seems out of character. There's an almost sullen, depressed look to him, which shows in both the way he carries himself and the way he speaks. He doesn't say much unless he feels the situation calls for it.
However, despite his views on morals and doing the right thing, Adrian has an almost sadistic sense of humor. Especially when drunk. He has often shown to be both sarcastic and downright rude, which is rather contradictory to his usual quiet, soft-spoken nature. Thanks to his ability, he has show smaller signs of personality disorders, though they more often than not shows in sudden mood swings than anything else.
He has a knack for pushing people away. He doesn't believe that someone as "fucked up" as him deserves to be shown love or kindness. He often hides behind a self-advertised image of "love makes you weak".
Adrian is the kind of person who is constantly afraid. He's afraid of himself, of going crazy and the world around him. Because of his ability, he feels like there's something wrong with him. That it's not natural for someone to hear people's thoughts and not being able to turn it off. Alongside with this, he also feels like he's constantly intruding on other people's personal space, because thoughts are meant to be private, are they not? Yet, no matter what he does, he can't quite shake the feeling that it's not an ability making him feel this way and that it's simply his mind trying to hide being something, rather than admitting that everything he's experiencing is simply him taking one step closer to the brink of insanity.
SECRET(S): Ever since he manifested his ability, Adrian has been afraid that he's going to end up being diagnosed with schizophrenia, although he's well aware that the voices he hears is because of his ability, and not because of a mental problem.
FATHER: Bartholomew Augustine
MOTHER: Victoria Augustine
SIBLINGS: Isabelle Augustine, deceased
WORTHY MENTIONS: N/A
CHILDHOOD: Adrian was born in Colwyn, Wales as the oldest son of Bartholomew and Victoria. His early childhood was rather normal, and at the age of five, his baby sister, Isabelle was born. His mother was a receptionist at a dental office and his father a mediocre lawyer. The family weren't rich by any means, but they had everything they needed in life. His own relationship with his family was great, although he always felt closer to his baby sister than anyone else - from the moment he saw her, he promised he'd do everything in his power to protect her.
Which sadly, wasn't the case. A few years later, Isabelle got the mono, which affected her entire immune system, sending her in and out of the hospital for years to come. This naturally took its toll on the family and as Adrian grew older, he realized that everything he'd thought was perfect, decidedly wasn't nearly so.
His sister's illness worsened - because she'd been so young when she'd gotten the disease, her body grew so weak she seemed to catch any flu that came their way. It also struck her much worse than most others, which made the various treatments expensive.
ADOLESCENCE: This continued for years to come, though it got worse around the time when Adrian turned ten years old. The costs of his sisters treatment seemed to slowly rip his family apart, and then, his parents decided that they couldn't continue like this and decided to split up.
Despite all the grim and sadness, Adrian was happy. At least, as long as his sister got the treatment she needed. He tried not to focus as much as his current home situation and rather focused his energy and thoughts on his sisters. Not a day got by without him visiting her at the hospital or calling her. Even as his parents brought the news of their divorce, he tried his best to stay happy for his sister.
Once the papers had been signed and everything was in order, Adrian's parents split up. They lived closed enough to one another so that Adrian didn't have to pick one parent over the other, but it was apparent that his parents hadn't exactly left things on a good note. It surely didn't help that they still had to pay the bills and treatments for their daughter, but somehow, they seemed to manage.
As time passed, it seemed as if his sister's treatment started working, and she was allowed to spend every other weekend at home. On his eleventh birthday, she was allowed to come home and attend his birthday party - which happened to be the exact same time his mother decided to introduce her new boyfriend to her children. This seemed to affect Isabelle a lot more than what it did Adrian, as the news of their parents divorce hadn't sunk in yet, and Adrian suspected she blamed herself for the way things had turned out. The news made her severely distraught, causing her to have a panic attack - which was exactly when Adrian's powers manifested.
He noticed that his sister seemed to grow more and more panicked and suddenly, he could read her thoughts - and then, slowly, the thoughts of all the guests around him seemed to flood into his system as well, and for the first time in his life, Adrian thought that he was going crazy.
He doesn't remember a whole lot about what happened that day. All he remembers is the rush of unfamiliar and alien thoughts and then he woke up in a hospital bed. His mother told him that both he and his sister seemed to have gotten a panic attack at the same time and had been brought to the I.R.
However, the next day, when Adrian was about to pack his things together and leave back home, recruiters from St. Bethany appeared at the hospital. He heard the gentle knock on the door and his mother brought the recruiters inside, explaining the situation as best as she could. At first, Adrian refused to leave his sister behind, but the recruiters - and his mother, who had apparently attended the school herself years ago, told him that he had no say in the matter and as such, Adrian was sent to St. Bethany.
He had a hard time fitting into the environment at the school as he constantly worried about his sister, his mother and her new boyfriend and his father. He never felt as if the power he'd been granted was a good fit and the worry about him going crazy never seemed to entirely leave his system. The simple fact that he seemed to be capable of hearing everyone's thoughts was distressing enough, on top of everything else he had to worry about.
As he reached his later teens, Adrian started divulging himself in alcohol and drugs, anything to get the voices to stop. They didn't make it vanish completely, but it helped some. As the years passed on, his misuse grew worse and worse and no amount of therapy or sessions seemed to get him to stop or even believe that he had to. After all, he didn't want to become crazy and this was the only escape he could see.
He was constantly afraid - not only of his surroundings, but of himself. There was a constant fear, even if he knew better, that he was slowly going insane. He was deathly afraid that the voices he heard wasn't because of an ability, but because he was schizophrenic, and maybe, just maybe, this school, maybe it was his own mind forging a imaginary place where he could feel safe, though to Adrian, it felt more like he was locked up in how own personal hell.
ADULTHOOD: Two years after his supposed graduation, which he'd failed both times, the school decided that it was time for Adrian to get a new change of scenery. They had tried everything they possibly could in hopes that he'd grow more in tune with his ability. He still did his training sessions, but he always seemed resentful towards the ability he'd given, which seemed to grow each year - as did his alcohol and drug abuse.
So, at the age of nineteen, Adrian was shipped off to Bellefonte. He didn't want to move away even further from his sister, but after several hours of arguing with his teachers, parents and counselors, he agreed that he'd at the very least try it out, though he made no promises. Despite him not being able to graduate earlier, the schools agreed that he'd be put in college classes on trial. His lack of graduation and good grades didn't come from not trying or simply not caring, but because his ability made it hard for him to focus. They hoped that a specially altered college program would help him onward - and hopefully help him make some friends his own age, which he'd struggled with back at St. Bethany (mostly because most people thought he was either crazy or an alcoholic).
He still keeps in touch with his sister - either by messaging, calling or chatting over skype. Her condition grew better over time, though she still had to spend a great deal of her time in the hospital, much to Adrian's worry. Though, thankfully, she didn't seem to be inflicted with the same thing he had been; powers.
