Cora Amy King
FACE CLAIM: Willa Holland
---------------------------------
AGE: 16
GENDER: Female
ORIENTATION: Heterosexual
POSITION: Student
POWER: Electricity manipulation is the ability to create, control and conduct electricity to ones will. Through the charged particles which the manipulator wields they are given the ability to control electrical currents, electrical charges electronics and in some very rare cases electromagnetism (which is something Cora is nowhere near capable of wielding and I doubt she ever will be).
By absorbing electric from power sources Cora can store large amount of electricity within her body, to expel this energy she points her fingers and tiny currents of will flow out and usually go where she needs them to. Of course when she expels these currents it takes a great deal of concentration to hit her target, she must focus completely or risk losing control of the current altogether which can be disastrous depending on the voltage. Recently she's found that she can control her electricity better through the use of a secondary conduit.
This conduit is a shiny metal pole which she uses to direct the flow of her electricity. In theory Cora has the ability to store limitless volts of electricity without it affecting her health, however at the moment she’s probably only powerful enough to retain the ammount of electricity that it takes to power one medium sized building, and even then its only with great concentration and she can't guarrantee it'll work. That being said she's not ready to go snatching Lightning bolts out of the sky as they are more likely to short circuit her instead of charge her.
LIMITATIONS:
Naturally range is a big problem with her powers, at the moment she can only control or conduct electrical sources or matter in a five metre radius. She’s completely limited to using the energy she’s stored up within her own body and while she can generate a lot more bio electricity once it’s gone she needs to recharge herself from an electrical source or face dire consequences. It’s hard for her to be around electronics especially when she’s in a bad mood, her emotions play a big role when it comes to controlling her power and if she’s angry it shows through electronics near her playing up or short circuiting all together. Water is a massive no, Cora has to wear special rubber shoes when she’s in the shower or the bath or face short circuiting herself or even shocking herself. Throwing water at her can either zap her powers out of control or short circuit her for a small period of time leave her powerless (well, until she’s begun to dry off) . While she has the ability to store limitless amount of electricity she at the moment can only store a charge equal to the ammount of one medium sized building, attempting to conserve any more can leave her with nasty burns and affect her heart rate.
SIDE-EFFECTS:
Side effects of her powers include, fatigue, headaches, terrible nose bleeds and an impulsive if not erratic nature which is slowly beginning to form. She becomes terribly grumpy and completely unlike herself when she’s low on energy. She can burn herself as well if she uses large surges of electricity and storing to much can affect her heart.
HEIGHT: 5’3
HAIR COLOR: muddy brown
EYE COLOR: Light brown with speckles of amber
MISC: there’s nothing truly peculiar about the way in which Cora dresses, her fashion sense shifts from either sweet dresses or skirts to skinny jeans and checked shirts. So adores high heels though would rather chill in her comfy slippers when she’s feeling lazy. While there is no real pattern in her fashion sense (if it’s cute she’ll wear it) there is a sense of edginess to which she does her make up. Smoky eye shadow and dark red lips are a staple. She's often spotted in her ballet slippers and her leggings as well.
PERSONALITY:
Cora is a wholly genuine person, she’s friendly and never one to turn away company, she enjoys being around people to much to do that. Of course like most she’s prone to subjective moments of shyness and quiet time but mostly she’s one for living in the moment and dragging her friends along on her next adventure. If you’re kind to her she’ll be kind to you, however if you’re a jerk be prepared for a sharp tongue filled with sarcasm, Cora’s no pushover and if it wasn’t for the high ammount of electricity she’s got stored inside of her she’d be more than willing to settle things with her fists.
Inquisitive by nature Cora is the type of person who can disappear for hours on a whim, following some autumn path or immersing herself within a new craze before jumping onto the next spontaneous interest. Her lack of concentration and her ability to procrastinate stem from this which never ends well when it comes to homework or school work she’s not the least bit interested in. However if there is a subject in school which catches her interest you can bet she’ll exhaust her list of sources in her attempt to learn everything about it.
On the other hand she can quite a bit of a trouble maker, (though it’s usually not intentional) she’s cheeky and maybe to sassy for her own good with an observant eye for opportunity and a quick witted brain ready to calculate some sort of plan. Her reckless nature has gotten her into trouble beforehand but she’s never one to learn her lesson, she’s incredibly stubborn and doesn’t change her mind on a without good reasoning. While she isn’t opinionated as such, she does take pride in her beliefs and will defend them nothing irks her more than un researched debate and ignorance is something she detests in others.
There is a vulnerable side to Cora, she’s incredibly worried for the future, she’s terrified her powers won’t ever become controllable and she hates the idea of becoming the freak at the freak school. She’s easily flustered and if you catch her off guard you’ll see a dozen cracks in her façade, she tends to ramble a lot when she’s not comfortable in a situation or when she’s scared chattering away until somebody tells her to or makes her shut up. While she wouldn’t admit it as well she tends to give people more second chances than they deserve, she honestly believes there’s some good in everybody and could easily be taken advantage of. Though she’d deny it completely.
SECRET(S): not really, other than the fact that she can’t really control her ability
FATHER: George, King
MOTHER: Rachel, King
SIBLINGS: Oliver King.
WORTHY MENTIONS: A golden retriever named Archer.
CHILDHOOD: Cora was born on a cold November day, at precisely eight thirty in the morning she slid out screaming into the world and blinked open her eyes for the first time. She was a happy child and her home was never devoid of love, even when family arguments broke out or time outs were ensued issues were usually resolved in a matter of hours.
Her childhood was happy, and although she comprised her time with cartoons on the sofa or hours wasted on the playstation Cora would often venture outside to spend her days roaming around the garden on her own. She didn’t mind, she had her trusty scooter and a bag full of lego to keep her company, the world was truly her oyster. Though she didn’t stay a loner for long, as she grew older she became the ring leader of a small handful of friends who the she often got into trouble with. They weren’t bullies, but they were notorious for their pranks and it wasn’t long before Cora’s mother was called into the principal’s office.
She was given detention for a whole week and was grounded for even longer.
Cora often struggled to find her place but nothing made her feel more individual than attending her Wednesday afternoon dance class, she was quite talented and showed a startling amount of promise. Cora adored dancing, for once she finally felt as though she’d found her thing and she’d gladly take down anybody who had a bad word to say about it. It didn’t calm her completely she was quite untameable, even during her punishments her parents discovered she couldn’t be left alone for too long, her curiosity knew no boundaries and whether it was building towers in her bedroom or creating intricate forts they all usually ended in tears or a smashed lamp…
The days leading up to her brothers departure were hard on Cora. She was going to miss him and so spent the remaining hours bugging her brother, asking him question after question about his ability. She decided quite quickly she’d be a good side kick for her brother, dancing had made her swift and she was notorious for her ability to come up with plans. After all it wasn’t as though she could be super hero, she didn’t have any powers. Or so she thought.
ADOLESCENCE: As she grew older Cora became much more girly, she began embracing her femininity make up high heels, she began studying harder. She was quite intelligent but she was no genius, there were plenty of subjects she struggled with but those she didn’t she flourished in. English was one of those subjects she’d fallen in love with the works of Chobsky and Capote. History was another favourite specifically ancient history, the Greeks fascinated her. She was still reckless, and she and her friends would often get into trouble for missing curfews or poking their noses into something they shouldn’t.
Cora first discovered her powers on the cusp of her fourteenth birthday; she’d been stupidly listening to the radio whilst she bathed when the family dog had hurried into the room (it was her own fault for leaving the door unlocked) and knocked the radio straight into the tub. Cora had screamed, expecting to be fried, but when nothing but an impressive light show happened she unplugged the tub and threw the radio straight into the trash. Immediately she put the incident to the back of her mind, surely it had been a fluke, she’d been lucky that was all.
She quickly changed her mind only hours later. It was at dance class when things took a turn for the weird. Her instructor had asked her to change the music but as soon as her hands had touched the CD player sparks shot out of her fingertips and the CD player short circuited. Class was cancelled when her dad came to pick her, the moment she reached out to touch him the same pale blue sparks shot from her fingertips and the next thing she knew her father was unconscious with fierce burns down his wrist.
At the hospital waiting room she quickly realized she’d be sent away, the sparks had finally stopped crackling but she could feel a strange buzzing sensation radiate around her body. It terrified her.
Two weeks later she was taken away to Bellefonte academy. At first she hated it, she didn’t want to be there. She settled down eventually but there was a bitterness there which Cora tried her hardest to repress. She wanted to be home with her friends not at the freak school! Sure it had seemed cool from an outside perspective but now she was stuck there. She still danced; hell dancing was the only thing that allowed Cora to truly feel in control. Her powers would go crazy while she spun around the studio. Her lack of control terrifies her she doesn’t want to hurt anybody again though she’d never tell anybody…
SAMPLE:
The giant windows were covered in a spatter of frost glazing the glass in streaks of silvery white. Winter had hit hard and even though Christmas had been and gone snow still remained upon the ground and would for the foreseeable future, as was the nature Scottish weather, which was great for a while but the snowball fights soon grow boring (eventually), and there was only so many snowmen you could make before you ran out of carrots for noses and spare scarves for their bodies. Not to mention the blistering cold was enough to keep most students out of the grounds and the common rooms packed, that being the reason Jasmine had scurried to the library to escape the noisy chatter off the jam packed common room.
Pushing open the door Jasmine shivered in the chill of the almost empty library, pulling her robes around her body she wrapped her arms around herself and stepped into the endless room. Immediately she wandered into the nearest aisle and took out crumpled up list from her pocket, it was lengthy but it would be worth it once her essay was finished. Gazing up the book case she grinned and grabbed the dusty looking book from the third shelf before she tucked it under her arm and began her search for the next book on her list.
Finally with her arms laden she'd found the last book on her list, adding it to her pile she trembled as her knee's wobbled under the weight of all the herbology books, she tightened her grip and frowned as she could hardly see over the top of the pile. The aisle seemed empty, she couldn't hear anyone but surely if anybody did see her coming they'd move out of her way.
As Jasmine drew closer to the end of the aisle she could only praise herself for her nimbleness, she hadn't been this agile since well, she couldn't remember. With a proud grin on her features she stepped out of the aisle and right into the pathway of an oncoming pedestrian. Not one of her books were spared and as they flew from her hands she felt her balance fail her as she tumbled to the floor in an ungraceful clatter.
Horror struck her features and her mouth fell into the shape of an O as she turned to the person she'd walked into.
“I-I'm so sorry,” she stuttered as she hurried to her feet, smoothing down her school skirt she offered a hand to person.
“Here let me help,” she could feel her cheeks blazing a deepening scarlet as she nibbled her bottom lip.
