Torrance George Lovell
FACE CLAIM: Nicolas Bemberg.
---------------------------------
AGE: 17
GENDER: Male
ORIENTATION: Heterosexual but questioning
POSITION: Student
POWER: Telepathy/Empath
Torrance has the ability to hear and sense other people's thoughts and feelings. For instance, if he was walking down a slim corridor with five other people he would be able to hear all of their thoughts at one time, as well as be able to feel whatever emotions they're experiencing at the moment. He can read large groups of people, as well as reading just one individual person, but because of how much strain focusing on one person puts on him he rarely does so. His power of empathy gives him access to someone else's feelings, making him feel the same way as said person. With his telepathy he is able to read someone's thoughts, and hear them in his own head. Torrance is still learning how to ignore all of the thoughts/feelings that bombard him everyday, but because he tries to ignore them rather than taking control of them and 'putting them on mute' so to speak, he is having a much harder time getting a handle on things.
LIMITATIONS:
For him to be able to read a whole group of people they need to be within 15 feet (up to 7 people surrounding him), and for a single person they need to be within 20 feet. He is able to read up to 3 single people in one day. When he is walking around in public he automatically reads everyone within 10 feet of him, although all of the thoughts and feelings are all jumbled up, he isn't able to differentiate between them, and the thoughts are just a dull mumble in his head. He has started to become a lot better at reading individual people, but it is still quite a strain on him, especially if he uses his power multiple time - the strain is most likely so bad because he hasn't completely got a handle on not using his power automatically when he's in public, so the further concentration necessary to purposely read someone takes it's toll on him.
SIDE-EFFECTS:
Since his power is always active he feels sluggish and drained almost always. The further use of his powers can cause him to get nosebleeds, black out, feel nauseous, or give him migraines. Once he learns how to better control his powers, and to not use them automatically, the side effects of his powers will lessen. If he tries to overexert his powers he will either black out, or they just won't work at all. His empathetic powers also cause him to have mood swings, which can either be small or turn into a full blown melt down. If he is already feeling sad and someone walks by him who is also depressed, his emotions will double and can end very badly. As for his telepathy, he will sometimes have a hard time distinguishing between his own thoughts, and those of others. As his training has been progressing he has been having an easier time telling the difference, but he does still get mixed up sometimes. Since he still has a hard time completely ignoring all of the intrusive thoughts he drinks excessive amounts of alcohol or takes various drugs, which almost completely silences the thoughts and feelings of others, as well as his own.
HEIGHT: 6 feet tall
HAIR COLOR: Dark brown
EYE COLOR: Dark blue
MISC: Torrance has his ears pierced, and other than his small black gauges you will never see him wearing any other type of ear jewelry. As of right now he doesn't have any tattoos, although in the future he does plan on getting a few. The only reason why he hasn't done so yet is because he's very indecisive and doesn't want to get something permanently inked into his skin unless he's totally sure that he likes it. As for clothing, Torrance prefers to wear things that make him feel comfortable. This usually includes some soft of hoodie, regular tee shirts, soft loose jeans, and either converse or combat boots. He likes to feel like he can easily breathe and move around in his clothes. He almost always has sunglasses on.
PERSONALITY:
Reserved: Torrance isn't particularly shy, but he does keep to himself. The main reason that he does this is so that he doesn't have to deal with the constant hum of other people's thoughts in his head, and so he doesn't have to take the chance of having a mental breakdown because he picked up on someone else's anxiety attack. Of course he would like to be able to socialize and feel comfortable, but until he can control his powers properly he prefers to stay on his own.
Sweet: No matter what, he will never be the one to stab you in the back. The only way he would ever lash out at someone is if they really hurt him. Since he is able to feel other people's emotions he treats everyone fairly and he is always kind. When someone is hurting it just tears him apart, and he doesn't know how to deal with heartbreak very well. Even the slightest of insults can rip him in two.
Intelligent: There's nothing he loves more than getting into a good book. Since he tends to stay by himself you can usually find him in his dorm reading something worthwhile. He also loves to watch documentaries and learn about the past. Torrance doesn't do very well in class because of his drug problems, but he will usually finish his homework and get good grades based solely on the fact that he can retain information.
Addict: Torrance doesn't deny that he has a drug and alcohol problem. He finds that downers help him keep his powers at bay, so as soon as he wakes up he'll go straight for the alcohol and dope. He has formed quite a habit to heroin, but he doesn't shoot up so he convinces himself that he 'isn't that bad'. From the minute he wakes up he reaches straight for his alcohol and his dope. He's gotten to the point where he can't function properly unless he's intoxicated. Torrance also doesn't openly talk about the fact that he uses hard drugs. It's quite obvious to other people that he's an alcoholic, but he hides the fact that he does heroin and pills.
Unstable: His empathetic abilities leave him pretty unstable. He could wake up in a good mood, go about his day pretty optimistically, and then happen to pass by someone who feels really depressed and it could cause Torrance to completely spiral out. He's starting to become a lot better at minimizing the strength that these outside feelings hit him with, but occasionally if someone is feeling particularly strong about something it slips through the cracks in his defenses.
Manipulative: If there's one thing his powers are good for, it would be his ability to manipulate people easily since he can sense their thoughts and feelings. When he is having a conversation he can easily mold his words around how the other person reacts to what he says. So it comes in handy when he's trying to get his way.
Goals: Torrance's top goals include gaining control over his powers, starting down the path to become a therapist, growing his friend group, traveling the world, making a name for himself, and finding something pure.
Interests: His main interests include computer games, good books, history, outdoor activities (deep in the woods, a private beach, etc), animals, and getting fucked up to the point where he can't even remember what day it is.
Fears: Being alone, being made fun off/being an outcast, losing his grip on himself/reality, never learning how to control his powers, dying alone, and dying because of his addiction.
Pet Peeves: Know it alls, cold hearted people, dogs, people who dislike cats, ignorant people, and attention whores.
SECRET(S): The fact that he is a heroin addict. He also doesn't like people to know what his power is, because he fears that they will be creeped out by the fact that he has the ability to know what they're thinking and feeling at any given moment.
FATHER: Unknown
MOTHER: Analiess Lovell
SIBLINGS: None
WORTHY MENTIONS: Dax the grey tabby cat
CHILDHOOD:
Torrance likes to think that he lived a pretty decent childhood. His father left when his mother was pregnant with him, but his mother was strong enough to keep going without him. She did have to work to pay the bills and care for her son, but she always somehow managed to spend quality time with Torrance at the end of the day. They rented a lovely tan cottage style house in a small, quaint neighborhood. Since his mother worked so often he usually woke up to his nanny being there, but at night his mother would always be home to tuck him into bed. His first memory is of the day when his mother took him to the children's amusement park that was a few hours away from their hometown. He can remember his time as a child being relatively stress free. He was happy.
Once he started going to middle school he had a decent amount of friends. He wasn't necessarily one of the 'popular' kids, but that didn't matter to him back then. All he cared about was going out and playing basketball on the weekends, or which girl would be the one to finally give him his first kiss. It was all so innocent and light hearted. These days Torrance looks back bitterly, deeply wishing that he could return to those simple times when the only problems he had were whether to get the Batman or Spiderman action figure, or complaining to his mother that his sneakers weren't 'cool' enough because all of the popular kids had the nicer ones. As he got older he did begin to put some more strain on his mother because he didn't have all of the 'new, cool' gadgets that his friends had, but she tried as hard as she could. He didn't realize it back then, but now Torrance wishes that he could go back in time and tell his younger self to just be happy that he has such a loving, caring mother - and that's something that a lot of people in the world can't say they have. Material items don't mean as much as a loving family does.
ADOLESCENCE:
Torrance was 15 when his powers first burst out of him. He can remember the day clearly, even though he wishes he could completely block it out. He had just gotten to school. It was his second week of being a freshman in his high school. When he woke up that morning he heard a slight humming in his ears. He shrugged it off, telling himself that it was because he didn't get enough sleep that night. When he got on the bus to go to school it began growing in intensity, and he realized that he felt... strange. He felt awake, tired, angry and happy all at the same time. To say the least Torrance was extremely confused, scared, and felt the beginning of a migraine creeping in. He sat back into his seat on the bus, and closed his eyes and hoped this would all just go away. By the time he got to school and got off the bus the voices in his head grew even louder, more distinguished. He was terrified, but also elated and pissed off at the same time. Before he even knew what he was doing he found himself closed into a toilet stall, his knees on the ground and his hands gripping the sides of the toilet. He threw up until there was nothing left inside of him to come up. Tears were burning his cheeks and he tried covering his ears with his hands to block out the sound, but it didn't help at all.
At this point he was hysterically sobbing, thinking that he had finally snapped, he had gone insane. The only thing he could even think to do was to go home, hide, and hope that this would stop. His mom had already left for work so he knew he would be alone. Shaking uncontrollably he got himself to his feet and cautiously walked out of the door. The voices and feelings weren't growing in intensity anymore, it seemed that they had plateaued or reached their peak. He leaned against the wall for support as he made his way down the hall, praying that he didn't run into anyone that he knew. Before he could even finish that thought he saw his current girlfriend turn the corner up ahead of him. Her blonde hair was up in a high pony tail, and he watched as her face light up with excitement upon seeing him. She half ran up to him, and the closer she got the louder the voices in Torrance's head got. Instead of being just a mumble now it seemed like his girlfriend's voice was screaming over the others. He visibly cringed and bent over, pressing him hands over his ears. "Torrance! A-are you okay? You look horrible," she said. He felt her touch his side but he physically cringed at her touch. "Please, just leave me alone. I can't deal with you right now," he said sickly, talking loudly over the voices in his head. "Wh-what did I do?!" she took a step closer to him, grabbing his arm. "Jessica, please just go! Can't you tell I do want to-" he straightened up and began to push her away from him but he got up too fast and his head began spinning. Torrance doubled over and gagged, but nothing came up because he had already vomited a few moments before. He saw Jessica attempt to grab him again but he had already began running away.

Torrance only had to wait one week for recruiters to show up at his door step, most likely because he lived pretty close to where Bellefonte Academy is located, so it didn't take them that long to travel to his home. Normally he would have tried to run if people showed up at his doorstep trying to take him to some strange school. But at that point he was so terrified and sick that he willingly went. His mother understood why he needed to go, but it still took her a while to wrap her head around the fact that her son was a... mutant. Regardless she still loves him the same. Ever since the day that Torrance's powers manifested he just hasn't been the same. The only time he feels relief is when he's alone, but he's also starting to realize that alcohol and drugs do a good job of muffling out the sound and feelings. Either way he has a lot of work to do until he can reintegrate into 'normal' society. Until then he'll just have to live with it.
His first few years at Bellefonte Academy were kinda hard on him. He felt like an outcast, and he was ashamed of his powers. Everyone else seemed to have better control of their abilities than him. On top of that he was scared that people wouldn't want to be around him if they learned that he could sense what they were thinking/feeling. During his training sessions he tends to just give up. As of right now he doesn't have the willpower to push himself far enough to really begin working on 'muting' the automatic side of his power. He has made some improvement with reading a single person and actually being able to hear their thoughts over the mumbling in his head. Is isn't so much that he has no will power and just doesn't care about learning how to control his powers properly. He just hates his 'gifts' and would rather ignore them that actively work on silencing them.
For the most part he spends his time away from large groups of people. He will mainly spend his time alone in his room reading or playing around on his laptop. When he does feel the need to get outside he will either go sit on a bench somewhere secluded or go to the library. He yearns to make some friends but he doesn't really know where to start. He isn't the best at starting conversations, and no one really approaches him unless they need directions or some other sort of help. So for now he just kind of blends into the background scenery, just him and his flask of whiskey.

SAMPLE:
The sun was just barely peaking out behind the clouds, but it was still a beautiful, crisp day. The perfect weather to take a walk outside and rejoice in the fact that spring was finally starting. Max slipped on his favorite red converse and headed out the door of his cozy stone cottage. The springy grass was slippery under his feet, so he had to be careful not to slip on the morning dew. He reached his arms above his head and stretched out all of the tension in his back. Instead of taking his car to the college like he did most mornings, he decided to walk. The college was only a three minute drive from his house, so he calculated that it would only take about ten or fifteen minutes to get there by foot. Max walked over to his car and reached into his pocket to grab his car keys to unlock the door. He pressed the 'unlock' button on his car's remote, and gently opened the car door. He reached into his back seat and grabbed his small book bag, then slammed the door shut and continued on his way.
Max was about halfway to the school when he heard the familiar honk of his best friend Clarissa's car. Smiling, he turned around to see what was going on. She pulled up to the curb near he was standing and lowered her right front window. "Car troubles?" she asked, laughing sweetly. "No actually. I just decided that it was a nice enough day to walk to class," he said, lightly leaning against her car door. "Well hop in!" Clarissa exclaimed, unlocking the doors to her car. Max smiled his thanks and opened the car door, swinging off his bag and sitting down in the passenger seat of her small red car. He placed his bag on the floor near his feet and slouched back into the soft leather seats. It's days like these that remind Max just how much simple days like these can mean to him. Beautiful weather, close friends, and small conversation... The small things in life that remind you how grateful you should be.
