Tobin "Toby" Robinson
FACE CLAIM: Cody Christian
---------------------------------
AGE: 17
GENDER: Male
ORIENTATION: Pansexual (Though closeted)
POSITION: Student
POWER: Shark Physiology
Toby's Shark Physiology manifests in both his outer appearance and his abilities. He has webbed fingers and toes, as well as rows of shark teeth. His skin is also rough, much like a shark's sandpaper-like skin. . He has a Nictitating membrane, or a third eyelid, that gives his eyes protection. All these traits, while unnoticeable at a distance, can give Toby quite and unsettling appearance, which he has been known to use to his advantage.
His abilities also include electroreception, the shark's sixth sense. This allows him to sense electrical or electromagnetic disturbances caused by the nerves of living creatures. Because of this, he can sense where other organisms are even in complete darkness. Useful both for hunting and hide-and-seek. He is a very powerful swimmer, and can stay totally submerged for up to fifteen minutes. While submerged in water, Toby also has enhanced sight, smell, and hearing. He can swim at speeds reaching 30 miles per hour in short bursts at his peak. He can also withstand above average amounts of water pressure, allowing him to swim deeper than many humans could stand.
Toby's mutation comes with one more feature, one Toby isn't so sure he appreciates. Toby's strength, speed, and senses are increased when around blood. He can smell blood in water from up to half a mile away. However, whenever he is in proximity of blood, he also frenzies. Instincts take over and Toby has a large amount of trouble restraining his urge to feed on the source of the blood. Toby is currently unable to control himself while in this state, something he hopes to change during his time at Bellefonte.
LIMITATIONS:
Toby's abilities, such as enhanced speed an senses don't carry over nearly as well on dry land. He retains his electroreception and powerful sense of smell while on dry land, though all his other senses are dulled. He also becomes disoriented when switching from water to land, and it can take him up to half an hour to fully recover from this. This is due to the sudden loss of his increased senses, as well as the loss of his much higher strength and speed. Because of all of this, Toby's abilities are much less helpful when on land.
Toby's electroreception, though helpful, can also become a hindrance. He is often drawn towards the sources of these electromagnetic anomalies, leading to focusing issues. His electroreception can be fooled by artificial sources of electrical current, and can be rendered useless when exposed to over-stimulation, such as an electrokinetic opponent.
Meanwhile, his blood-lusting, frenzied form is also limited. While his senses and physical prowess are enhanced when he interacts with or senses blood, his intelligence is reduced. He loses the ability to strategize or differentiate between friend or foe. This often leads to him being easily beaten by a smarter, more organized opponent. He is also quite easily distracted when behaving this way, allowing him to be lead or baited with ease.
SIDE-EFFECTS:
Toby's eyesight and hearing are bellow average when on dry land. Because of this, he is supposed to wear strong prescription glasses (though his ego prevents him from donning them). Without his electroreception, Toby would have trouble telling people apart from furniture. He is very easily dehydrated as well, necessitating a near constant water source. Because of this, Toby is rarely seen without a few water bottles near by. When left without water for too long, Toby because disoriented, irritable, weak, and sluggish. Going even a day without water can have serious consequences to Toby's health.
Toby's shark-like instincts also raise some issues. One of these is increased aggression. Though usually easily controlled and lighthearted, Toby is easily provoked, causing him to snap. He is also very territorial over items, living space, and friends. His instincts provide him with sleep issues as well. His urge to keep moving, even in sleep, leads to increased restlessness and a very bad case of sleep walking (and sleep eating).
HEIGHT: 6'1
HAIR COLOR: Light Brown
EYE COLOR: Toby's eyes are light green, though due to their tendency to dry out easily they are often concealed by his third eyelid, leaving them a foggier color.
MISC: Toby used to be a football star at his old school, and is thus quite fit. He keeps his hair rather short. He's often seen in his big brother's hand me down varsity jacket.
PERSONALITY:
Toby was raised by two wealthy, accepting parents. Because of this, he never had to face much struggle. Toby is very confident, often times overly so, young man. His confidence can lead to stubbornness, as he refused to turn down and challenge or accept any insults. Though he can be a bit of a bully from time to time, he tries his best to stay lighthearted. This being said, he is easily pushed over the edge, which has resulted in many fights. His confident nature prevents him from filtering his words and thoughts. His impulsive comments and reactions are often mistaken for his near trademark teasing, even when he means well. He is also extremely flirty, much to the annoyance of many of his female associates. He is a bit insensitive due to his privileged life style, as he doesn't understand the struggles many of his peers have faced.
Toby is also extremely protective and territory over his friends. This comes partially from his shark-like mutations, and partially from his nature demeanor. He is willing to fight for any of his friends, whether they want him to or not. However, his intense loyalty also leads to intense jealousy. Toby is very easily made jealous and lonely. Due to this, he surrounds himself with as many friends as he can and holds on to them tight. He takes rejection very, very hard. Overall, Toby can be an insensitive jerk, sometimes intentionally, sometimes not, but he remains extremely loyal to those he cares about. He is ambitious and headstrong, impulsive and caring, playful but easily angered, all together a predictable but nonetheless interesting young man.
As far as learning goes, Toby is no prodigy. Since he was young, Toby has had trouble focusing. His new found powers only add to this, leading to him being quite behind in school work. Toby has also never been the brightest, and prefers to work his troubles out through emotions or action, not thinking or logic. He's been known to dismiss reason, instead relying on his instincts to guide him. This doesn't help with his penchant for trouble.
SECRET(S):
Toby is known to jokingly flirt with both men and women, but always labels his flirtatious interactions with men as playful teasing. However, Toby is a closeted pansexual, something he is having difficulty coming to terms with.
FATHER: Robert Robinson
MOTHER: Carol Robinson
SIBLINGS: Five younger brothers: Trip, Clint, Everett, Michael, and Justin Robinson
WORTHY MENTIONS: Having been a football player at his old school, Toby was once very close to his coach, Mr. Gordon. However, since his mutation Gordon has slowly grown distant from Toby, thus the pair haven't talked in months.
CHILDHOOD:
Toby grew up in Gainesville, Florida, a college town in the Sunshine State. He was raised with his five brothers, all of which being every bit as cocky as himself. He had always been the largest brother, and rarely had to struggle for attention from his quite loving parents. His mother and father, though not obscenely rich, were a lawyer and a dentist respectively, so the family never had monetary struggles. He was raised to love himself and his kin, which is where his protective nature sprouted from. He spend his days at school protecting his younger brother's and tormenting the other students. Before too long he had become a regular school yard bully, a habit that still hasn't completely faded.
By the time he was in Middle School, he was tough, big, and groomed to be a star football player. Though his grades were low, partially due to his focusing issues, partially due to his perhaps below average book smarts, he tried out for his middle school's team. Although he was initially too disorganized and reckless, he grew to be quite a running back. His parents were quite proud, and his status as a wealthy, healthy, football player allowed him to get away with his fair share of trouble making. He had little trouble making friends (or enemies) and spent nary a second alone his entire childhood. Needless to say, Toby had a very privileged, very cozy childhood.
ADOLESCENCE:
Once Toby was in High school, it was already obvious he was going to continue on the path he had been on since he was young. He made it onto the High School varsity football team, a feat which he was rewarded with his brother's own varsity jacket for. Though his grades continued to plummet, the coach managed to fudge a few numbers and butter up some administration to keep him on the team. Toby was completely void of any consequences. He got in some fights, partied perhaps a bit too much, and focused on school much too little. Despite all of this, he was certain he was bound to be a star. His parents were quite proud of their son and gave him all the support in the world, as did his brothers. It was around this time that Toby began to struggle with his sexuality. The locker room after the games became a time Toby dreaded, if only for the strange feelings he sensed. Though Toby knew what this meant, he hid it. Aware that he was a walking sitcom cliche, closeted macho man football star, Toby decided to simply ignore it until it went away, like he did with most of his problems. This continued to work until his mutation manifested.
It first started when Toby turned 17. He began to realize he was leaving long, sharp teeth in his apple every time he took a large bite. Next, Toby found himself drinking gallons of water a day. Soon more and more strange signs began to appear, until he found himself struggling not to make a lunch out of a man with a nose bleed in the stands during one of his games. Before too long, he found he had webbed fingers and toes, rows upon rows of razor like teeth, and a slimy third eyelid, which unsettled him the most. He even began to sense electric impulses emitted by the nerves of every living thing he passed by. He wasn't the only one to notice something was wrong. His parents and brothers soon noticed too, and although they were supportive of the strange transition their son or brother was going through, they couldn't help but worry. Luckily, for him, his family, and that nose bleed man in the stands, two and a half weeks after he grew webbing on his fingers and toes he was found by Bellefonte Academy. After a discussion with his family and a couple million hugs, he departed for the school.
SAMPLE:
"Toby!" A loud voice, though muffled by the bathroom door, flooded the room. "Toby, is everything okay in there?"
He wasn't sure. Two hours ago Toby had gone to take a bath in the family's rest room. Toby had already begun to notice some changes, more and more teeth growing through the roof of his mouth, his eyesight getting blurry, but nothing like this had happened. Toby was currently fully submerged in his bathtub. This alone is no extraordinary feat, but perhaps the time he had spent underwater was. Toby had counted, he was thirteen minutes and forty seconds underwater now. He hadn't had to come up for a single breath. Not only that, but a thin, moist eyelid had rolled over his eyes, and his senses were more powerful than ever before. He could hear every little bubble, every creak the tub made. He could smell the rust deep inside the drain and the hair knotted up in the drain. Ew, it was Clint's hair.
"Toby, your mother and I are a little worried about you, son." Now it was his father's deep, firm voice penetrating the door. "You haven't come out in over two hours!"
Toby quickly sprang out from the tub, water flying off of him and spilling over the edge of the tub, covering the clean bathroom tile. He reached over and grabbed his towel before stopping to look at himself in the mirror. He barely managed to stifle a gasp.
He couldn't hardly see a thing. Where he should have been was simply a tan glob in the center of the mirror. Everything was clouded. What surprised him even more is he could feel his families position through the door. He could feel every little spark their synapses made as their nerves sent information to their poor, worried brains.
"Uh, just a second!" Toby said, fumbling with the towel. He rapidly dried himself, slipping in the process. He knocked over a small shelf over the bathroom sink, spilling shampoos and hand soaps every where. He laid on the floor, covered in rainbow of perfumed cleaning products. He couldn't help but remember the time he covered poor Tommy Hudgens in finger paint in the first grade.
"Honey, we're coming in." His mother's voice rose up in pitch when she was nervous, and right now she sounded like a tea kettle.
The door slowly creaked open. His parents were greeted by the sight of their soon, seventeen years old, lying on the floor covered in Head & Shoulder shampoo, with razor sharp teeth protruding from his jaw.
"I think it's time we had a talk, son."
