Sarah Arielle Howes
FACE CLAIM: Kiko Mizuhaka
---------------------------------
AGE: 17
GENDER: Female
ORIENTATION: Unsure
POSITION: Student
POWER: Intangibility/phasing
Sarah has the ability to make herself intangible. Physically, this means altering the molecules that make up her body (and small objects touching her, such as clothes or jewelry) so that they are small enough and spaced far enough apart that they can "push" themselves through solid objects. In addition, she can "reform" after her molecules have gone through this transformation, returning to normal size and form to remake her body and become solid again. This allows her to "phase" through solid objects, such as sticking her arm through a sofa or, at its most extreme, walking through walls.
LIMITATIONS:
- It is hard for her to maintain intangibility for long stretches of time. It works best in quick bursts, just to get through the solid object to the other side. The longest she could maintain it would probably be about ten minutes, and the consequences for losing her control over the intangibility while she's in the middle of a solid object would be disastrous.
- It's also harder to maintain intangibility over large parts of her body. It takes a lot of concentration to make her arm intangible, but it takes a lot more to make her whole body intangible. She might be able to keep her finger intangible for a good amount of time, but making her whole body intangible would be physically exhausting and probably only last a few seconds.
- Become intangible isn't "instant". The process of shrinking and spacing apart her molecules can take a handful of minutes to a quarter of an hour, depending on how much of herself she's changing. During this time, she's vulnerable to everything around her since her concentration is focused elsewhere and her body is slowly unforming.
- While she has the ability to turn small, inanimate objects intangible when she is in contact with them -- like clothes or jewelry -- she's incapable of extending this ability to anything else living or large, substantial objects. In addition, she often has a hard time reforming these things correctly once the intangibility ceases.
SIDE-EFFECTS:
- Becoming intangible and reforming isn't a pleasant experience. The process of unforming and reforming isn't very painful as long as she takes her time, but the the larger the area and the quicker she's forced to make the change , the more painful it is. She describes it as very slowly scratching yourself to tiny pieces and then stapling yourself back together... at the molecular level.
- Becoming intangible for any amount of time is exhausting and she's usually incapable of doing it more than a couple of times a day. Afterwards, she'll often have to sleep for extended amounts of time to recover her energy level. Occasionally she has fainting spells due to her ability.
- Occasionally she will reform incorrectly, which can have devastating consequences; if she reforms her stomach lining a bit too thing, for example, she would have to be rushed to the hospital. So far, the worse thing that has happened is tears and bleeding where she's formed back her skin a little thinner than she should have and uncentered fingernails.

PERSONALITY: Sarah is responsible, dutiful, and clever. She likes being useful and she likes solving problems, and most importantly, she likes being in control. She hates change (unless it's been planned for) and any kind of instability. She's the kind of girl you want running the world and has been voted "Most Likely to Be President" multiple times by various social and academic groups. She has an executive mindset and a need to be needed. Growing up with lots of brothers and sisters, she's simultaneously good at giving orders and good at listening and adjusting if someone brings something up. She can be a bit overbearing when she's passionate about a project (she loves building things out of spare parts and fixing things that are broken), but she always has best interest at heart.
While Sarah is very "work first, then play", that doesn't mean she doesn't like to play. When she isn't in the middle of some project or another, she can be quite mischievous. She's meticulous about planning, but you can be sure that whatever she plans -- a prank, a day out at the beach -- will maximize fun and end up being a ball. She's not afraid to get into a little bit of trouble or stretch the rules when it suits her, although she does have her limits. And if something does, god forbid, go wrong, she is the first one on the scene to patch it all up. She cleans up her messes quickly and quietly, although it's often hard to get her to admit that she was wrong in the first place.
Overall, Sarah's a CEO or an engineer in a young girl's body. She wants to solve problems, she wants to build things, and she wants to have fun doing it.
SECRET(S): N/A.
FATHER: Brian Howes
MOTHER: Amanda Howes
SIBLINGS: Many foster siblings through the years; and Russell (1)
WORTHY MENTIONS: Her childhood best friends, Oliver King and Gemma Dove.
CHILDHOOD: Sarah was the first adopted child of Brian and Amanda Howes, who had been informed that having children was an impossibility for them due to Amanda's infertility. She was adopted into the family at the age of five and has had no contact with her birth family, which suits her just fine. It was only a few months after the adoption of Sarah when Brian and Amanda decided they wanted more children and opted to become a foster family. Their large house in New York and Amanda's at-home job meant that they were prime candidates and soon their home was bustling with children.
As Sarah grew up, she was always surrounded by kids older and younger than her that often needed special attention. She soon got sick of being underfoot and in the way and learned how to help out around the house. The older she got, the more she became the part-counselor, part-sister, and part-mom that a lot of the kids needed to get through this rough spot in their lives. Her parents, of course, still made time for her and loved her to death, but she didn't mind having less active parents in her life. She enjoyed the independence and the responsibility while quietly excelling in school and discovering a passion for engineering. By the time she was 10, she was better at fixing their station wagon than her dad.
Still, her house could get to be too much some time, with kids running around everywhere and something always going wrong. Luckily, her family was close friends with the Kings and the Doves, who had children Sarah's age. She bonded with Oliver and Gemma quickly and often spent time with them when she wasn't busy at home. They became her closest friends and a nice respite from her hectic home life.
ADOLESCENCE: Getting older meant more responsibility at home, but Sarah didn't mind. She continued to excel in school, more quietly than her genius friend Oliver, but enough to get noticed by anyone who cared to look a little closer (or went into her garage and saw her various electrical projects). She was inventive and clever enough to entertain the kids at home and come up with solutions for most of their problems, so that's what really mattered. She continued to be close to Gemma and Oliver, the two constants in her life even when her foster siblings were often constantly shifting in and out of the Howes household.
However, things changed dramatically when Oliver manifested his mutation and was shipped off to a new school out of state. The trio had been ripped apart at the seams and Sarah felt the loss acutely. She dove into her schoolwork and buried herself in the constant stream of work to do at home, but she still missed him terribly. As if things couldn't get worse, a few months later, she received a frantic-but-excited call from Gemma about her own mutation presenting. Her two best friends were leaving her behind and Sarah felt her heartbreak. She heard one of the kids start banging on her bedroom door, a cry down the hall, looked down at the math homework she was supposed to be working on, and she just couldn't take it anymore. She wanted to disappear. Just fade into the bed and leave.
When she actually faded into the bed and ended up dropping with a thud to the floor below, she was absolutely ecstatic. As awful as it would be to leave her family without an extra pair of hands, she would get to follow her two best friends on their next great adventure. Before a week had passed, both her and Gemma were headed to Bellefonte.
Sarah had a bit of a bumpy transition to Bellefonte. She was used to living in close proximity to people, of course, and she had her two friends to back her up, but she missed home. Her parents called her everyday and let her talk to the kids and she ended up going home more weekends than was probably necessary, but eventually she settled into life here. She enjoyed the classes, the freedom, and the challenges associated with mastering her mutation, but the best part was getting to stay with Gemma and Oliver.
Recently, her parents, despite all odds, conceived a child. Now she has a legal brother just twelve months old, Russell Howes. She's always excited to hear from home, see the new and old faces of the foster kids, and especially see how her little brother is progressing.
