Caelum Andrew Mitchellson
FACE CLAIM: Kevin Zegers
---------------------------------
AGE: 23
GENDER: Male
ORIENTATION: Homosexual
POSITION: Bellefonte College Student
POWER: Winged Flight
The power is pretty self explanatory, Caelum has wings and he can fly. Now, his type of wings are that of a luna moth and they are also a fairly small compared to most other flying mutant's wings. Caelum's wings lay against his back when not in use, so his shirts all have to have slits in them. He also is forced to sleep on his stomach, because the wings are very sensitive, especially to pressure. Flying uses a lot of muscle strength, especially in his back and he really has to concentrate on it. That concentration alone takes a lot of effort, but he manages just fine. Sometimes at least. If he is unfocused for any reason at all, he can lose lift and plummet to the ground.
LIMITATIONS:
For starters, because his wings are somewhat weak, it takes a lot more energy and effort on his part to get lift off and height. However, if he starts from a tall place (i.e. a roof or tree), very little energy is used. The length of flight also depends on how much he his flapping his wings. If it's long periods of time, he will have to stop and take breaks often. Usually after an hour, long breaks are needed while short burst of flight lasting less than 30 minutes take shorter time to recuperate. Sometimes he manages, like birds, to catch gusts of wind which means he does not have to move his wings as much. With this he can push himself a lot farther and move a little faster, but if the wind dies down quickly he has to flap or land. Also, Caelum can't fly if his wings get wet, they get far too heavy and can even tear.
SIDE-EFFECTS:
The main two being shoulder cramps and muscle fatigue. While it doesn't hurt to fly, his shoulders and muscles around them are extremely sore after a flight, more so a long one than a short one. This also depends on how much actual movement he made. Trouble sleeping is a minor issue, mostly because there can be nights where he just can't sleep on his stomach, but sleeping on his back hurts far to much. His wings are also fairly sensitive and in different ways. They can be easily ripped and this hurts him tremendously, depending on where and how sever the tear is. If it's closer to his shoulders, it will hurt more. The other side to that is, a very gently touch to his wings feels very nice. In fact, if you touch the right spot you will get him worked up, in the good way. Other minor things include, not being able to go out when its raining without a coat on, minor leg pain from landing too hard, and the occasional bruising from falling out of the sky.
HEIGHT: 5ft 9in
HAIR COLOR: Brown
EYE COLOR: Brown
MISC:
His slightly dark skin and medium length dark hair make his bright blue eyes really stand out. His clothing style usually consists of tshirts, jeans and hoodies. Basically shirts that are easy to cut slits in for his wings. Not all of his tops have the slits, such as his beloved peacoat and a few of his nicer shirts. It is a pain to tuck his wings in, but really he doesn't mind. His wings are a bright green and when extended stretch to just slightly above his head and down to his knees, most of the time they are pressed tightly to his back, almost having the appearance of a full back tattoo.
PERSONALITY:
Fun loving and free spirited. If you didn't know his past, you would think he was just a big goofball, from a large family of goofballs. Caelum loves a good practical joke, but is never mean about it. He just never wants to see people feel the way he does deep down sometimes. The guy knows what it's like to hurt and just cant stand to know others are going through the same thing. It's one of the reasons he's so determined to become a child psychologist. He believes helping someone when they are young, will make more people happier as they get older. For someone as goofy as he can be, he's actually pretty smart, but like having money, he rarely shows it. Only really good friends get to see that more intellectual side of him.
On the downside, he's a joker, which means he can do some rather stupid stuff now and then. It's not uncommon for him to break something, like himself, in order to get a good laugh. This also means that he doesn't always think his actions through, unlike when he was stuck in the Mitchellson household. Naturally there are days when his depression does get the better of him and he'll shut himself off in his room. It's not bad enough to really worry about, but he still doesn't like people to see him like that. As open and friendly as he comes across, very few (see maybe two or three) people get to know the real him. Caelum is also pretty secretive about his past and his feelings, he will out right refuse to talk about his parents, or Peter.
SECRET(S):
Isn't sure if he's in love with his brother or not...
Even though it's very mild, he keeps his depression and his need for the medication a secret from his friends.
FATHER: Harold Mitchellson
MOTHER: Ingrid Mitchellson (divorced from Harold but kept last name)
SIBLINGS:
-Peter (brother+, 29)
-August (brother, 25)
-Jennifer (sister, 21)
- Bella (sister) & Grady (brother) (twins, 19)
-Christina (sister, 15)
WORTHY MENTIONS: Other than the friends he's made along the way, no one.
CHILDHOOD:
Caelum was born into an already growing, busy, and wealthy family. His father was a prominent member of the society set in Harperville, Tennessee, as was his mother. That was actually how the two met, at a business function that His father was hosting. Harold and Ingrid were instantly thought of to be a perfect match, and would do both the families a great deal of business. That's how the families looked at love and children...it was all business. Was there ever a time when Ingrid and Harold loved one another? Probably not, but they did tolerate each other and made sure to act and behave like the perfect married couple in front of others.
This became easier with the addition of their first child, and their second, and even easier by their third. It seemed to really help when Harold decided to run for public office, and not just any office either. Nothing but Major would do for a Mitchellson man. So, as he campaigned, his three young boys were constantly in the spotlight. The youngest of which, Caelum, seemed to always draw the most attention. He was bright and bubbly and loved his father with all his heart. The other boys acted differently toward their father...especially at home. Little Caelum always saw the good in people, but his brothers knew different and he would find out soon enough.
When his first sister, Jennifer, was born, she instantly became the center of his parents attention. Especially his father's. Nothing got voters attention more than a cute little baby girl after all. Though, by now his father was already Mayor and a now 6 year old Caelum didn't understand why he was so excited. Granted, he loved little Jen and the three other siblings that came along after, but why was she being fused over so much? Apparently his father had decided to run for a much bigger office, State Representative. Though he was too young to fully understand, he always hoped his daddy would win.
Which of course he did, but that was when the family unit started to go sour. Was it the stress of the job, or was he like this before. Caelum was unsure, besides he had started feeling differently lately. He was now 9 years old, his world seemed a bit darker than most other children's. School seemed to get harder and harder, as did everyday things around the house, even just holding a conversation with his siblings proved...almost tiring. Yet, no one seemed to notice. Of course the young boy had no idea what was going on, other than his parents seemed to yell at each other a lot more now.
ADOLESCENCE:
By the time Caelum was 12, his parents had all but stopped talking at home and his older brothers were acting strangely towards him. Probably because they were teenagers now, even the younger ones did so maybe that wasn't it. Jen was just a spoiled little monster, and honestly he rarely saw the twins or little Christina, they were usually off with the nanny. During this time, Caelum had grown to understand things a bit more, but none of the things he understood seemed right. His grades were still dropping, and it wasn't until a teacher called home that his parents even bat an eyelash.
Failing was not an option in the Mitchellson household, you were meant to be perfect all the time. So, there were many an argument over the boy, mostly who was raising him right and who wasn't. Caelum didn't like all this fighting, especially over him. It was just his grades, he had trouble focusing in school and life in general, he always felt so sad and sort of lost, he just figured everyone else did too, so he didn't see the big deal. As a last resort, his parents took him to a doctor, who sent them to a child physiologist. It was there that they learned that Caelum Andrew Mitchellson, had minor depression.
Naturally they were both supportive and nurturing parents about the whole situation....Maybe in some alternative universe. No, Ingrid stopped talking to him, and Harold just yelled at his wife and now Caelum more. They weren't totally heartless, they bought the boy his medication, but they normally sent a maid or one of the help to get it. They couldn't be seen buying their son mental health medication. It would be an absolute scandal. So, Caelum started spending most of his time in his room, alone.
That was until his older brother Peter started dropping in for the occasional visit. The middle school boy was very fond of his brother and spent hours in his room talking, and occasionally sleeping together in the same bed. It was innocent brotherly bonding, but Caelum felt more there, a stronger bond then he knew he should. As another year began to pass, he tried to push what had happened out his mind, and these strange feelings he was having for his brother as well.
One evening, sometime after Caelum and Peter had fallen asleep in the living room watching television, they heard the distinct drunken voice of their father shouting from his study. Well, Caelum heard it, Peter somehow managed to sleep through it. Being curious when he faintly heard his name used, he snuck to the door of the study. Inside he could see his parents, his father was very drunk and his mother didn't look far behind.
They were both arguing about him, about how much the therapy was costing and how "risky" it was to send him when an election year was just around the corner. Tears started to well up in his eyes as he listened, ear pressed tight against the door. His father was blaming his mother or all sorts of terrible things, even going as far as saying Caelum probably wasn't even his. Now, being young, this statement stung him so hard that he made a loud sob. It was unintentional, but it didn't matter, his father was at the door already.
As drunk as he was, he didn't even think. All he really knew was the "thing" that was the source of his anger had been eavesdropping and it needed to be punished. Grabbing Caelum roughly by the arm, he dragged him back into the study and shoved Ingrid out. It wasn't until she heard the boy scream that she fully realized what was going on. In a moment of being an actual mother, she banged on the door and threatened to call the cops if he didn't send Caelum out at once. A few moments later, Caelum came out the door, sniffling and looking down.
Harold wasn't stupid, he left no signs of what he did, but the moment Ingrid started in on Harold, the boy was out the house running. He went and hid in the stables and refused to leave, even when Peter and August came to get him. Both brothers did care for their siblings it just wasn't the Mitchellson way to show this. The two older brothers stayed with their younger that night, but Peter held him in his arms while he slept, being very careful of his bruised back.
In the morning however, it was August's loud gasp of surprise that woke Caelum. Peter and August were standing a foot or so away and just staring at him. They didn't look scared, in fact, they almost looked excited and Peter seemed happy. Trying not to scare him, they explained and showed him that in the night, he had grown wings. They tried to sneak him back into the house, but the still somewhat worried Ingrid noticed all to quickly. With one shriek from her, the whole house knew.
Barely even a week later people from a place called Bellefonte Academy were there to take Caelum away. His father literally saying "good riddance" as he packed his things. However, as he stood in the driveway saying his goodbyes, his father tapped his shoulder and looked at him. Telling him in no uncertain terms that he was still a Mitchellson, and to keep himself out of trouble. It was probably the nicest thing he ever heard from his father. As they drove away, he looked out the window, all of his siblings actually seemed sad, but Peter most of all.
His time at school was spent wisely and somewhat...differently than he had expected. The moment he arrived there at 13, he felt a weight lifted off him. He no longer had the pressure of doing what was "expected" of him, even if it wasn't right for him. Caelum could just be, Caelum. Naturally, he was still taking his medication, but he felt happier there than he had in a long time.
The years went by, and Peter would always come and visit him. At first he bribed one of the drivers, then eventually himself. Sometimes one of the others would tag along, mostly August, and they would always have a good time. On his first visit, Peter said something to Caelum that he would always remember. "Be Happy." It was simple, and it was almost instant that the young man decided then and there to be just that...happy.
Not only that, but to make everyone else happy as well. Two things happened after that, Caelum became dedicated to becoming a child psychologist, and he decided to have fun along the way. The boy became a practical joker and was rarely seen without a smile on his face. His jokes were always harmless and he always made sure everyone could enjoy them, This change really seemed to be the real Caelum coming out.
ADULTHOOD:
Years pass as they do, and Caelum graduated with pretty decent grades. Good enough to get him into the classes he needed to pursue his dreams. The man was college bound for sure. However, things were going to take a strange turn for him in the emotional department. Not long after he was getting settled into his college life, then Peter started coming around more. He was thrilled to have his brother around, but he knew something was up.
Sure enough, there was. Not only was the company he was working for (a company owned by their family no less) sending him over seas for the next few years, but that was a big secret he needed to tell Caelum. Peter didn't just tell him, he kissed his now 20 year old brother deeply and passionately. It brought back all those feelings and memories of when they were younger. Peter went on to confess that he loved Caelum and always had, and that maybe they could figure things out when he got back. If Caelum would wait for him.
It's been three years since then and though they talk everyday, Caelum is still confused and never says anything to it. Other people have of course come into his life and he's been on dates, but he tries to focus on his studies now. He's still a joker and loves to make people happy, but now he doesn't know what will make him happy. Does he love his brother? Or is the guy for him out there still? Is he just going crazy from studying so hard and trying to have fun at the same time? Only time will really tell.
