Mia Grace Langston
FACE CLAIM: Candice Patton
---------------------------------
AGE: Twenty
GENDER: Female
ORIENTATION: Heterosexual
POSITION: BA College Student
POWER: Botanokinesis (also known as Plant Manipulation)
The ability to manipulate plants (ie. vines, flowers, plants, moss, leaves, seeds, fruits and veggies). The manipulation part of the ability allows her to help plants grow, move, shift, and even rise out a seed and/or soil. While she can not yet revive already withered or dead plants, she can help slow down the process of them dying in order to get more time in reversing their state and only if she catches them before their actual death. Depending on the plant itself and the chemicals associated with the plant, Mia can manipulate and use the chemicals within the plant as well. Just as long as she takes the time to understand, research, and learn about the said chemical. The more she deals with the said chemicals and/or toxins, the more likely she may have a lesser chance of being affected by it. (ie. getting poison ivy less and less after time spent of being around it).
Plant Empathy (a sub-power of Botanokinesis)
The ability to sense the well-being and conditions of plants as well as fully interpret their emotions and communicate with them of 10 meters away. She may get a general sense of the conditions for plants that are further away from her and may not be able to get a very specific sense of said plant unless it was less than 10 meters away. This also allows her to sense dead plants nearby as well as form some sort of "trust" and "kinship" with said plants.
LIMITATIONS:
* Can not control wood unless said wood is apart of a tree, still alive and rooted into the ground.
*Can not control fruits and vegetables unless still rooted/growing from the ground.
*Can not create plants but can help the process of growth from it's seed.
*Has to be at least 30 meters in range to be able to manipulate.
*Can not revive dead/withered plants.
*Is not fully immune to plant chemicals (ie. toxins, poision ivy) until spent a good amount of time understanding said chemicals and communicating with plants that produce it.
*Can only manipulate a plant to grow up to 10 - 15 feet.
*Can only manipulate up to 2 - 5 plants at the same time.
*Must be near plants for powers to be useful.
SIDE-EFFECTS:
Dehydration
Fatigue
Headaches
May become apathetic
May feel hostile towards humans after interacting with plants for prolonged periods of time
Will feel tired if out of the sunlight for too long
Will feel alone if not surrounded by plants for too long
Will be affected by certain side-effects by plant toxins/chemicals when handled for the first time
Within a black room lit by a few lights, a twenty year old young mutant by the name of Mia Grace Langston took a seat in front of an interviewer. She looked to have brown skin, slim with a few curves, plump lips and almond shaped dark brown eyes. She also looked to be 5 feet and six inches, give or take. Along side of her was a man around her age, who also pulled up a chair next to her as he was her best friend and translator. Miss Mia Langston is deaf, you see and is fluent in ASL and as well as lip reading.
"So nice of you to join us Miss Langston. I won't take up too much of your time, this will be somewhat of a short interview." Even while her translator signed every word that was said by the interviewer, Mia still tried to keep her eyes set on the person, watching their lips as well as eyes. The young woman responded in Sign as her interpreter spoke right after each signing. "Thank you for having me. I have nothing else planned today, so please; take your time if needed."
"Well thank you. Let's get started shall we? How about we start off about who you really are, like where you were born and raised, any family, parents siblings?" Mia smiled as she signed, her lips moving along with the movements of her hands. "I was born in the city of Columbus, Ohio. I grew up with only my father in my life. My mother died from an infection before she gave birth to me, the infection also spread while I was still in her. The doctors assured my father that there was a high chance that the infection wouldn't spread to me, but it did and because of that, I had to be a premature birth - a C-section. Between being a premature baby and the infection, that's where I lost my hearing. Well most of my hearing. While I was born completely deaf in my left ear, I still have 20% of my hearing in my right ear."
The interviewer nodded, "Wow. That must've made life difficult for you as a child growing up. How was going to school like?" Mia shook her head and signed as her interpreter spoke. "No, not exactly. I mean, my father was a police officer at the time and learned ASL before I can remember. He and my aunt would take an hour of their time each day to drive me to the School for the Deaf and an hour back home everyday just so I could get a normal education and be around other kids like me. And while I had friends at school, I didn't really have any friends back home because none of the kids knew sign language or were willing to be patient in having conversations with me. So I was either inside playing with my toys, on the computer, or just outside in our huge backyard."
"So would you say you were close to your father?" Mia chuckled as she spoke with her own voice sounded awkward but was still possible to hear. "Yes." She went back to signing, "He is the first love of my life and my first best friend. He is everything I've always wanted to be when I became older; Fearless, caring, comforting. He never holds me back from doing what I feel I'm capable of doing. He does baby me from time to time because I am his only child but it's really all love. He taught me everything I know."
"Was that bond still as strong when you became a teenager? How was it, growing up as a deaf pre-teen and dealing with those teenage years?" Mia pressed her lips together as she thought about the question and why exactly it was asked to her like that. Her interpreter spoke as she signed, "Being deaf doesn't make life any weirder or difficult than anyone else's. I feel normal, it's just that I can't hear as well as everyone else. It was more so of being a mutant that made me feel different than everyone else, not being deaf." She slowly nodded as she signed, "I think my bond with my father grew even stronger the older I became. Only because the teenage angst and arguments and the whole puberty thing and teenage rebellion kind of put us against each other, only to make us tighter. I never did anything illegal because I am the daughter of a Lieutenant and I know it would make his job harder."
"You mentioned being a mutant was more difficult than being deaf at the time. How so? What happened when you found out you were different in more ways than one?" Mia chuckled as she shook her head, almost fed up with the interviewer. How many times did she have to explain that being deaf wasn't some kind of setback for her? Her interpreter shook his head and started when Mia was ready. "One day, at the age of twelve, I guess I got a little bit over dramatic, overly emotional about my dad not wanting me to go to a public school after I assured him I would be okay if they had a department meant for those hard of hearing but he still told me 'no'. So like any pre-teen, I stormed out and decided I was going to run away."
She laughed. "But I didn't go very far. I ran into the backyard, far out back where our gardener always put the flowers. I would always talk to them, and pretend they could - you know, talk back or hear what I had to say."
She paused, "Only, this time - When I laid near my favorite set of peonies, I cried to them about how I just wanted to be like all the other kids. I wanted to bloom and grow. I just wanted to be free to learn how to go to school with everyone else but I felt like my father kept me so trapped at the time. I was starting to hate it. And that's when the flowers bloomed, and they grew, and I could even hear these little whispers, they were so emotional - I was such an emotional experience - It was like when you give attention and love to something that had been waiting for it this whole time. That's how the flowers spoke to me and even though I thought this was the coolest thing ever and it just felt normal, you know? Come to find out, it was more than that."
"Why was that? What happened next?" Mia pursed her lips before she signed. "Two days later, we get a visit during dinner and it's some recruiter from The Bellefonte Academy. While I had no idea who and what that was, my father's face just read 'oh no'." She chuckled, "We found out that I was a mutant and I was freaking out because there was a stranger in our house and my dad looked worried, and I couldn't necessarily hear any of it. I didn't know what was really going on because their lips were moving way too fast. But my father - He looked so scared and nearly refused to let the recruiter take me without proper papers - You know how men of the Law are. It took at least six to ten hours before it was explained to me that I had to leave him and go to a school far away. I nearly had a fit." She laughed, "I cried and I begged him to not let the recruiter take me but after my dad promised that he would soon transfer for me and relocate our home to Montana to be close. That's when I sort of gave in."
"How was living at that Academy like? Compared to now? Have you made any friends? Are you dating?" Mia shook her head as she chuckled and signed, "No, I'm not dating anyone. It still took me a while to get used to being in such a big school, I would constantly stay to myself or go out to do homework or spend time with plant-life, as lonely as that sounds. I did so happen to gain a few friends who were either willing to be patient with me or also learned ASL just for me, or probably already knew it. My dad also ended up moving to Montana, so my home is closer to the Academy now. And towards my last year of high school I realized my love for science was immense, I decided that I wanted to become a Botanist and major in Botany or at least have a minor in Herbalism. So that's what I'm currently studying." She nodded as she offered a smile to the interviewer.
"Well Miss Mia, I'd have to say that our time is up and it has been a pleasure interviewing you. I'm sure our eyes have been opened as well as our minds and I do hope to see you again when you've achieved your degree." She nodded and reached out to shake the interviewers hand. This time, speaking with her own voice. "Thank you."
