POWER: Power Control Manipulation and Power Scanning
Brad is able to temporarily manipulate the level of control a subject has on their mutant power. Under the influence of this power a, mutant may find it far more difficult or simple to make use of their power. It works by either enhancing or diminishing the connection a mutant has with the forces controlling their power. Mutants with physical based powers describe being under the influence of this ability as feeling stronger or weaker when attempting to perform feats that would make use of their mutation while those with mental based powers have reported sensing a sharp focus when enhanced and jumbled, erratic thoughts when being limited.
Furthermore, Brad can decipher the powers of nearby mutants. This ability gives Brad a certain insight into the capabilities of his students. With it he's able to glean the basic nature (whether it's physical, mental, etc) of the power in question, the rough potential of the power and, under ideal circumstances, how the user manipulates it.
LIMITATIONS:
- Brad is incapable of increasing a mutant's power beyond their limits, nor is he able to negate a power fully. He's only capable of making it easier or more difficult for a mutant to operate at their potential.
- In order to manipulate a power, he must remain within line of sight of his target. The closer he is the more potent his own ability becomes. His power works at full capacity up to a range of 10 feet and degrades exponentially from there until it reaches its limit of no more than 40 feet.
- Brad's power detection is not latent. It can't be used to 'sense' when a mutant is near and it requires his full concentration to perform a 'scan' of a target. Depending on the complexity of the target's power, this scan could take upwards of 2-3 minutes, although most powers take less than 60 seconds.
- In order to perform a 'scan', Brad must have skin to skin contact with the target. It does not work otherwise. If contact is broken before the necessary information can be lifted, the scan comes back jumbled and distorted and must be restarted from the beginning.
- Brad's powers work in conjunction with each other. In order for him to manipulate a power he must have scanned that individual completely.
SIDE-EFFECTS:
- Brad's power affects his equilibrium, more than anything else. Overuse of his power can cause extreme vertigo to the point of vomiting and incapacitation. It comes all at once, there is no build up. Manipulating powers for an extended period of time doesn't tend to trigger this as much as scanning. Attempting to scan more than a dozen individuals (with a plus or minus of two or three based upon over complexity of the powers involved) in a day will almost certainly send Brad to the ground for at least a couple hours. This, obviously, makes the first day of school with all the new kids particularly trying.
- Triggered by a recent car accident in which he sustained a serious head injury, Brad's mutation alters his equilibrium causing sporadic dizzy spells. The severity of these episodes aren't drastic and usually pass after a few moments. The frequency of them, however, have made in nearly impossible for him to safely drive a car or operate machinery or heavy equipment.
- So sensitive is the hold Brad's mutation on his equilibrium, even strong, emotional outbursts can trigger either a dizzy spell or the full vertigo. Because of this, Brad has been on blood pressure medication for most of his adult life. Failure to take it, or keep a semi-balanced diet makes his increases the frequency of his dizzy spells and susceptibility to over exerting his power.
The tall, well-muscled man sat in the exam room, anxiously waiting the arrival of the doctor. His dark eyes shifted around the small space, taking in everything they could see, focusing on anything they could to keep the man from dwelling upon the news he would be receiving today. Finally, after what had seemed like agonizing hours, the door opened and the small, lab-coated woman stepped inside.
"Officer Young." She said, her hazel eyes gleaming as she caught sight of the NYPD officer. "You're looking healthy." She commented, smiling a little as she tapped a slender finger to her chin. "I like the beard." She chuckled lightly, settling into the office chair near the exam room desk and pushing it closer to her patient. "Let's see." She looked over the files fastened to the heavy metal clipboard she'd brought in with her. "You know the deal." She said idly. "We just need to confirm your information." She tapped each spot on the document as she listed off the details of the man's life. "Twenty-nine years of age. Six foot two, one hundred ninety pounds" She paused and looked to the broad, well muscled man sitting in front of her and gave a bit of a smirk. "You've put the weight back on." She then gave a satisfied nod. "That's good." She knew how bad he'd looked in the wake of the horrible car accident that had kept him from his duty for months.
Once she'd completed her rundown, the doctor settled back into the chair and looked over the NYPD officer. "You've almost made a full recovery." She said, her face serious. She couldn't help but let the devastating news she was about to give show in her face. She knew what it meant to the officer, she'd been with him from the first day he'd been wheeled into the operating room. "You'll be able to move around without pain, although I'd recommend to stay active. Your knee makes you a prime candidate for early arthritis." The time had come, she couldn't put it off anymore. "But I can't clear you to return to duty. The structure of your knee is weakened to the point where even after you're fully healed, you're still going to be too much of a risk to put back on the streets."
The words fell upon the now former NYPD officer like a ton of bricks. His normally vibrant, almost mischievous gaze twisted into a mask of disbelief and shock. "No." He said defiantly, his head shaking. "You can't do this." Although in his heart he knew the doctor was right. He trusted her implicitly and knew if there was any chance he could return to duty she would have found a way. "All my life I've never wanted to be anything but a cop." The doctor nodded and tried in vain to speak reason. "I'm a fourth generation member of the NYPD." He argued. "I've got seven years in, I'm only twenty-nine!" He exhaled slowly and brought a hand up to run through his light brown hair. "What am I supposed to do now?"
"Didn't you say something recently about a job offer from Bellefonte?" The doctor asked. She knew what this meant. She'd attended the Academy as well when she was a girl. this was why she had taken such a vested interest in Officer Young. "You went there, didn't you?" She already knew the answer but he'd always spoken fondly of his time at the Academy. She would grasp at anything to get him distracted and speaking of something else. "How'd you end up there, anyway?"
"I did." The now former NYPD officer confirmed with a nod. "I got sick when I was twelve. So dizzy I couldn't walk, let alone eat. When I went to the hospital, they found signs that I wasn't quite normal." He tapped a finger to his temple and chuckled softly. "Within a week I was in Montana. It was an adjustment."
"But you did alright." The doctor added with a confident nod. She knew the officer probably better than he knew himself. A few months of being by his side as he recovered from a horrific car accident had given her remarkable insight into his true nature. He was strong, far tougher than he gave himself credit for even if he did hide his fears and insecurities behind a snarky, sarcastic sense of humor. Regardless, she knew it had taken guts for a 12 year old kid to go from the big city of New York City to the sleepy town of Kalispell. "Look." She said, squaring herself and catching the younger man's gaze with her own. "This isn't the end of your life. You're still not fully recovered from the accident." She mirrored his own gesture and tapped her temple with her index finger. "I know you've been with your wife since high school, that's a long time. You both need each other right now." The doctor paused and took a long, slow breath. "Don't look at this as an end, but a beginning. See if that job is still available, talk to your wife and try to start a new chapter."
