Penelope Salomé Muñoz-Díaz
FACE CLAIM: Naya Rivera
---------------------------------
AGE: 19
GENDER: Female
ORIENTATION: Homosexual
POSITION: College Student
POWER: Pyrokinesis
Penelope has the ability to create and control fire with her mind through focusing really hard on an object/the task at hand (although hand gestures makes it easier). This is the rapid oxidation in the exothermic chemical process of combustion and releasing heat. Penelope is also immune towards fire, and instead, she can suck up any source of flames and use it for her own, almost like eating chocolate to gain extra, and a quick burst of energy. The flames is usually generated in the palm of her hand, all though, during severe cases it can engulf her entire body, in which her clothes is not immune to the fire like her skin is.
She can also shape her fire into forms, such as for example creating a small ball of fire; however, she cannot create any incredibly detailed shapes, such as for example a flower or a pair of scissors. In order to create fire, she needs the necessarily resources, such as pulling oxygen out of the air to fuel the flames, since everyone knows fire needs oxygen. However, it's easier for her to control sources of flames that are already made, than creating ones of her own - creating her own flames takes a lot more effort, focus and time.
LIMITATIONS:
- She needs oxygen to fuel her flames and her abilities of creating flames will not work without it. This is done through accelerating the speed of the molecules to a point where they either catch on fire or melt.
- Only her skin is immune towards fire; things such as clothes are not.
- Although she can use her mind to use her ability and focus, hand gestures makes the process a lot easier and a lot less straining.
- Her fire can be constructed and shaped, but not into any detailed forms, such as for example shaping it into something more complex than a ball or sphere of fire.
- She is also overpowered by elements such as ice, water, air, and even earth.
- The better focus Penelope has, the easier it is for her to control her ability. The second she loses her focus, her ability will either get out of control, or the flames will disappear completely.
- She can only use her ability in a ten feet range of herself, meaning that anything outside said range would be unaffected and/or out of her reach.
SIDE-EFFECTS:
- The more Penelope uses her power, the more it drains her energy and she'll quickly feel exhausted, get migraines and feel dehydrated as the fire seems to burn up the fluids in her body quite rapidly. If using too much energy at once, it will result in her passing out.
- Naturally high body temperature; Penelope's skin is naturally warmer than most other people, which means that she doesn't freeze easily, though she often has to deal with feeling "too hot" and get flashes of heat, which in turn can make her feel incredibly uncomfortable and aggravated.
HEIGHT: 5'5
HAIR COLOR: Black
EYE COLOR: Brown
MISC: Penelope has a tattoo on her wrist reading "still I rise", and another tattoo of a small anchor behind her ear. Both tattoos were taken in memory of her late father. The first meaning that despite the loss of her father taking a lot of toll on her, she still manages to get out of the bed in the morning. Still, she manages to find a reason to go on. And the second meaning that her father was an anchor to her, always keeping her grounded. Even now, her father's memory helps her in some way, constantly making her wanting to be better than what she is.
PERSONALITY: Penelope is angry - not just at herself or the people around her, but at the world in general. Anger issues is a word often described around the girl and an impeccable lack of control. She often lashes out, both verbally and physically, with little to no regard for the people standing in her way. She's lonely, hurt and afraid, which is all hidden by a bitchy and manipulative demeanor.
A bully to a fault, Penelope cares little for the people she has to hurt to get what she wants. She adores being the center of attention, be it getting someone to sleep with her (male or female), or by creating a scene. She's incredibly afraid of getting her heart broken, and often keeps people at an arm's length. She's afraid of ending up like her parents, and instead, she does everything (or did) to make sure her heart doesn't get snatched away.
But it did. By god, did it; Penelope's vice is a girl she met during her years at Bellefonte who easily and swiftly managed to steal her heart, which by all means necessarily didn't end well for Penelope. Unable to stay away or resist when her heart really wants something, she becomes torn, constantly fighting against her two basic needs; the need for love, and the fear of getting hurt.
Sadistic and manipulative, Penelope has a habit of going for those weaker than herself, simply to make herself appear and feel better than what she already does. She has an impeccable ability to push others down and make them feel worse about themselves. Especially those people who cannot stand up for themselves. Only a few people have ever gotten to see the fragile, hurt and afraid girl hiding behind all the venom and it's a side of herself Penelope doesn't show often, and it rarely happens on purpose.
Despite her talent for lashing out and getting on people's bad side, part of Penelope also wants to be everything her father taught her to be. It's a constant struggle between different urges, which both displays two great aspects of her personality. She wants to be better, but she doesn't know how to.
SECRET(S): Catching her mother cheating is something Penelope has never, ever told anyone. Not even her late father. It's something she wants to take with her to the grave, because she doesn't want anything to make the image of her father (whom she still puts on a pedestal) seem nothing save for perfect.
FATHER: Joaquín Muñoz-Pérez
MOTHER: Salomé Padilla-Díaz
SIBLINGS: N/A
WORTHY MENTIONS: N/A
CHILDHOOD: Born to Joaquín and Salomé, Penelope was from an early age taught to never settle in one place at a time. Her father worked for the U.S Military, which meant that Penelope and her family moved around a lot. Never staying in one place for more than a few years at a time. That of course meant that although Penelope stayed for long enough to finish a school year, she didn't make a lot of lasting friends. By the time she managed to make something of herself at one place, her family was already on the verge of moving away. Again.
You'd think a young child would mind constantly having to move from town to town, but in truth, Penelope didn't know any better. It was all she'd ever known, and all she thought she ever would know. Penelope had always had a very close relationship to her father. Always daddy's little girl and princess. He meant the world to her, and in turn, Penelope put her father on a pedestal. He could do no wrong. As opposed to her almost estranged mother, whom Penelope didn't go along well with at all. They always fought or kept out of each other's way, and whenever Penelope's father was at work, Penelope spent most of her time either outside or in her room.
However, at the age of eight, Penelope caught her mother cheating on her father while he was at work. Furious, although she didn't really understand what was going on, Penelope rushed into the kitchen, screaming at the top of her lungs. She didn't understand how her mother could do something like that to the man she claimed to love - and the man she had a child with. This didn't at all better the bond between mother and daughter. If anything, it only made it worse.
Penelope never told her father about the incident, especially as her mother had begged her not to, and told her how much it would have hurt him if he found out. It was around this time that Penelope grew more aggressive towards her mother. Quickly getting angered and frustrated, unsure what to make of it all, and how to handle it with no way of getting rid of the excessive "energy".
ADOLESCENCE: This continued for years, and Penelope often got in trouble at school, with her parents and around the neighborhood. Nothing too serious. At least nothing illegal. Her ways of expressing her frustration and anger came in bouts of talking back, having an attitude and getting into fights. But due to the father rarely being around, and the mother being incapable of handling it, very little happened in terms of setting Penelope straight - and with the constant moving around, it only furthered the feeling of frustration and being lonely.
It was when Penelope was twelve that she got the devastating news of her father's passing. While on duty, one of the machines they were working on salvaging malfunctioned and Penelope's father was hit with the blow of the explosion. He was rushed to a nearby hospital, but didn't survive the ride. Penelope and her mother got the news later that day, when someone their father had worked with showed up on their doorstep, announcing the tragic incident.
It was then that Penelope's powers manifested. During the conversation, when her mother started crying out for her husband. Something within Penelope snapped and she started screaming, telling her mother she had no right to be sad, because she'd never truly loved him like she had. How could she? After all, she'd willingly slept with another man, with no regards of Penelope's father or his feelings. It was during that, that her mother's clothes suddenly caught on fire. Panic ridden, Penelope hadn't known what happened and quickly retrieved to her room. Her father's co-worker, who happened to be a mutant himself quickly understood what was happening and managed to put the flames out.
Giving the girl some time to calm down, the man came into her room and calmly explained what had happened, and what she was. At first, Penelope didn't believe him; neither did her mother. At least not until a recruiter showed up the day after and calmly told Penelope (and her mother) that the girl had to come with her to a school in Chile. The school would help the girl learn control to avoid something like this incident to ever occur again.
Her stay at La Delgadillo Academia was short lived though. Penelope had a hard time settling down there and didn't make a whole lot of friends. She continued getting in trouble and into fights, and after a few months, the school decided that she needed a change of scenery, away from everything she knew, and thus, Penelope was sent to Bellefonte Academy in Montana.
At first, Penelope found it hard to settle there as well, but with time, and many activities, she slowly managed to find her place within the mutant community. Taking up activities such as dancing, boxing and gymnastics, it helped her focus her anger on something more physical, and much less violent. Of course, Penelope was still angry and often lashed out at people, but at the very least, she got into less fights than what she had before. She even managed to make a few friends along the way, many of which she has a lot to thank for today - not that her pride would ever let her, but that's a story for another time.
Then Penelope met a girl whom she fell deeply in love with. It was around this time that Penelope realized that she was homosexual. At first, she refused to believe it and remained firmly locked in the closet. Then gradually, she became more self-aware of her feelings for the other girl. She was incapable of staying away, despite her best efforts. Granted, this little adventure didn't at all go as Penelope had hoped, as she found out that not only was this girl already in a relationship (not that it stopped either of them), but things were getting pretty serious between the two.
ADULTHOOD: And it was when Penelope graduated that she decided she needed to get away from it all. Clearly, staying around didn't help either of them, and although she really wanted to, she found it too hard to be around the girl, knowing that she could never really have her. That she could never be nothing more than "the other woman", and suddenly, Penelope realized why it had been so easy for her mother to cheat on her father.
Leaving then, Penelope returned home for the first few months, but that didn't last very long. Restless, Penelope spent the next year moving around, picking up various jobs here and there, such as waiting tables, singing at karaoke bars and other odd jobs around America. She worked at various diners, clubs and fabrics, never really finding a place she could call "home". Not like the academy had been. She grew more and more restless and lost, until finally, a year later, Penelope decided to return to Bellefonte to pick up a college degree.
Now, Penelope has just returned to the school. Close to graduation, she's simply going through the motions before starting up her new life again once the semester starts again, focusing a lot on her dancing and singing, as well as still boxing. She's ready to finally make something of herself and make her father proud - because lord knows he wouldn't be if he'd known that his daughter was nothing more than a flight risk with a fear of falling.
