Bethany "Beth" Young
FACE CLAIM: Felicity Jones
---------------------------------
AGE: 26
GENDER: Female
ORIENTATION: Heterosexual
POSITION: Social Worker/Counselor (Academy Official)
POWER: Power Suppression
Beth has the ability to temporarily suppress and/or negate other mutant abilities. By concentrating, she can, with her mind, put a block on someone's ability, making them unable to use it for a limited amount of time, meaning that the effects of her powers are only temporarily, and she cannot suppress a power forever, or completely remove it. This block cannot be seen or felt (for most people), the only thing the mutant she uses her ability on will notice, is the sudden inability to perform/use their own power. This ability takes both mental and physical strength.
LIMITATIONS:
- Mutants can by using their willpower fight against the "block" she puts on their power, which means although she suppresses their ability, there's always a chance of it not working or the mutants breaking free from the blockade. The stronger willed the mutant is, the harder it is for her to keep the block activated.
- She can only block powers that are in line of sight (and the radius around that), meaning that she cannot block a power that's on the other side of the school or through a wall. And the second someone leaves her line of sight, the effects of her powers will cease to exist. The effects of her power are easier to contain through skin to skin contact, but it's not necessarily at her level of training.
- Focusing on the power in question she wishes to block makes it easier for her, and the more she focuses (or the better focus she has), the longer she can keep the effects going. At most, she can keep the blockade up for a few hours, if needed.
- Being rendered unconscious removes the blockade completely.
- She can use her ability on a total of 4 people, but the more people, the shorter amount of time she'll be able to keep her blockade active, and the more tired she'll get.
SIDE-EFFECTS:
- Physical and mental strain; the more she uses his ability and the more someone fights against it, the more physically and mentally exhausted she'll feel.
- Headaches that can develop into migraines and nausea, and then eventually throwing up.
- Physical and mental tiredness; she often needs a lot of sleep after using her ability a lot. The same goes for general exhaustion.
- She often experiences feeling restless despite the exhaustion, meaning that sometimes, she can be awfully tired, but unable to sleep, because she feels the need to do something.
A young woman with dark brown hair and green eyes sits across the room. Her legs are crossed and her hands rest calmly in her lap. Everything about the young woman radiates a sense of calmness. She stands roughly 5'3 feet above the ground, but the bright, toothy smile that lights up her face takes away all focus on her height. Her slender frame is tucked underneath a well-fit dress with a high collar. Her hair is pulled back into a neat pony tail. "Welcome back to Bellefonte," a man greets her. The young woman chuckles as she lifts her hand to tuck a strand of hair behind her ear.
"Thank you," she replies, her voice soft.
"From looking at your file... You came to Bellefonte at the age of eleven?"
The young woman nods. "Yes, I manifested right after turning eleven and got sent here within two weeks," she replies.
"I see," the man replies with a court nod. "Quite the young manifestation," he notes as he flips through the various papers on the desk in front of him. "You stayed until the age of eighteen and graduated with straight A's. Impressive."
Chuckling softly, the young woman's eyes drops to the floor and she looks almost embarrassed. "Thank you, Sir."
"What happened then?"
"I moved to New York with my boyfriend. I took my degree there too." The young woman pauses as her eyes lifts back towards the man. Her previous flustered expression has been replaced with a soft smile. "He's a cop-- or he was a cop." She grimaces slightly at that, but quickly collects herself. "Now he's working at the academy too." She smiles at that.
"You're married?"
"Yes. We've been married for six or seven years now."
"Any children?"
A pause and the young woman sighs, lifting her hand once more to brush a strand of hair away from her face. "No."
"I see." The man nods at that before shuffling through his papers again. "Well, from what I can tell, you graduated from college with quite good grades. You seem to do well in school." The man looks up, his lips pursing as he studies the young woman.
She nods then. "School has always been a favorite of mine. I've always enjoyed learning new things. I guess you could call me quite the nerd," she smiles. They both laugh. "No, but I've always been sure of what I wanted to do with my life, so I think it was easy for me to do well in school, seeing as how I had a goal to reach."
"Goals are always good," the man nods in agreement. He offers the young woman a smile before folding his hands over the desk. "And now you wish to work at Bellefonte." The young woman nods. "Well, I would be lying if I said we don't need more social workers. There are quite a lot of troubled students here who needs a mentor. Are you sure you're up for the task?"
"Yes, Sir." Leaning forward, the young woman clears her throat before continuing. "I already have some experience from working back in New York--"
"Your recommendations are to be honest, quite flattering."
"Thank you, Sir."
"You'd surely be quite the asset to have. Now, I doubt I have to tell you..." The man pauses before offering the young woman an apologetic smile. "...that this will be quite different from what you're used to. I mean, these aren't just troubled kids. They are troubled kids with powers."
The young woman nods before a smile forms on her lips. "I guess it's a good thing I'm a power suppressor then."
They both laugh.
The man then leans back in his chair as he sighs. "Indeed it is, Mrs. Young." He looked at the watch on his wrist before sighing. "Well, I wish you the best of luck, and once again: Welcome to Bellefonte."
"Thank you, Sir," she replied as she stands up, brushing her hands along her dress before reaching for her purse and hanging it over her shoulder. Her hands interlocks in front of her and she bows her head slightly. "Thank you for seeing me," she adds before turning and heading towards the door.
"One more question, Mrs. Young," the man says as he leans forward, his brows furrowing. "Why come back now? After all this time, why leave your life in New York behind for Montana?"
Pausing, the young woman's face shifts awkwardly before she turns her head over her shoulder. She offers the man a small smile. "You can't start the next chapter of your life if you keep re-reading the last one," she replies simply before heading through the door. Offering the man one last smile, the young woman closes the door behind her and takes a deep breath. Fetching her phone from her purse, she dials a number and presses the phone to her ear. Chewing on her bottom lip as she waits for someone to pick up on the other end, her lips suddenly crack into a smile as the obviously familiar voice replies. "I got it," she says. "I got the job."
