NAME: Tobias Alexander Croft
NICKNAME: Toby
AGE: 29
GENDER: Male
ORIENTATION: Heterosexual
POSITION: Trainer
FACE CLAIM: Charlie Day
POWER:
Electrokinesis
Toby has the ability to manipulate and control electricity. This can be as small as generating a spark to creating electrical force fields and directional electrical blasts. His skillset can extend to such abilities as the electrical charging of objects. His body is constantly charged, meaning he often gives static shocks to those he touches. His reactions are also notably faster then the average human, since his brain’s electrical impulses work at a greater speed. He almost appears jumpy, as though constantly hyped up on caffeine.
While Toby can use his ability using his own body’s electrical impulses, he is very limited with what he can do without an outside power source. Overusing his ability on his own body’s impulses alone will result in nosebleeds, migraines and if pushed beyond his limit can induce blackouts and epileptic fits.
His power range based upon his own electrical impulses can only safely extend to charging electrical items and small directional electrical blasts. He has pushed himself in order to try and further this ability without an outside power source, but it generally results in the forementioned aftereffects, Depending on how far he’s pushed himself.
When he can draw electrical power from an outside source, he then has full access to his abilities with far less hindrance, although he runs a far higher risk of injury to himself or others. The outside source could be anything from a switched on plug socket to a high powered battery pack. The higher the electrical charge combined with the amount of time he’s connected to the current increases his chances of short circuiting his brain (causing blackouts, epileptic fits), burning his flesh at the current’s points of entry and exit, and of course the risk of death from frying his own brain. Although his body seems built for coping with electrical charge, there’s only so much he knows he’d be able to take. He’s been able to handle a direct current from a mains power supply for up to half an hour minutes before collapsing, and is unsure exactly how much power it would take to kill him, since like an emergency shutdown switch, going into a fit or blacking out breaks him from the power source. With significant outside power, Toby can form electrical force fields, generally large enough to cover himself and a handful of others for a few minutes depending on the force upon it, as well as far stronger directional electrical blasts, which when connected to a mains power supply can be enough to cause death.
Limitations
- Has limited ability using only his own electrical impulses. (Is limited to small directional electrical blasts which are nothing more then a moderately painful shock and the charging of small electrical objects such as phones.)
- He can only use his own impulses for around an hour at a time, after which he needs to recharge. This generally takes around 15 minutes.
- Can only produce electrical forcefields and stronger electrical blasts while connected to a mains power supply, and can only be connected to a mains power supply for around 30 minutes.
- Using his ability in a safe, controlled manner requires a lot of concentration. If he uses his ability without thinking, it can harm himself as well as others.
Side-Effects
- Using either power supply for too long (around an hour on his own impulses, 30 minutes on a mains power supply) results in nosebleeds, migraines, collapsing and epileptic fits. He often blacks out.
- When he uses his ability too often, he runs the risk of having black outs or fits without even using his power. This frightens him, and after an attack of it, he often won't use his ability for weeks.
- While using his own impulses causes little pain, being connected to a mains supply is incredibly painful, and often leaves his body aching for days afterwards.
- When there's electricity in the air, such as during a thunderstorm, Toby suffers from painful migraines and nosebleeds, as well as extreme static electricity, as his abilities are stimulated by the electricity in the air. There's a chance if he doesn't remain inside that it can trigger a fit.
- His hands often get burned when connected to a mains supply, and as such his forearms and hands are badly scarred.
APPEARANCE SECTION:
Not exactly buff, nor well toned, Toby isn’t exactly as well built as some of the other members of staff. He’s struggled with his weight, often ending up slightly podgy around his stomach despite his attempts to monitor his diet. (By attempts, he diets for a few days, only to give in and go to town on some high fat high sugar combination.)
Generally scruffy clothed with equally scruffy hair, Toby may go for a few weeks without shaving depending on his mood.
Toby is often seen in plain shirts, trousers and ties while working (Although his shirt is often untucked and his tie loose and often at an awkward length), and rarely out of a baggy hoodie and easy wearing clothing when not. He’s not exactly a snappy dresser, and although acts as though he doesn’t care that he lacks fashion sense, internally it bothers him when he receives negative comments; When he suddenly shows up dressing suddenly sharper then usual and clean shaven, it’s often because he’s heard or received such a comment.
Coming in at 5”8 he’s shorter then most, often seen wearing his glasses and on occasion contact lenses, since without these he’s practically blind.
It's also noted that he has a love for tattoos, and is considering getting a few to cover the scars on his arms and hands caused by his ability.
MUST HAVE APPAREL:
His glasses or contact lenses, baggy, comfortable clothing, his favorite hoodie. While training he’s often seen wearing a white shirt, dark trousers and a tie, often with his shirt sleeves rolled up to allow for better movement and use of his hands.
PERSONALITY SECTION:
Excitable, a joker with a touch of sarcasm would be the simplest way to describe him, a ball of energy with the tendency to say the wrong thing at the wrong time.
Outwardly, He seems to have taken up residence of the positive side of things, and has the ability to point out the ups in almost any situation; At least the “ups” according to him. Pointing out that a friend’s recent breakup was a good thing because she was a “controlling bitch” for example, isn’t exactly tactful; But hey, at least it’s some sort of positive.
The class clown in school and now into adulthood, Toby rarely acts his age and is a frequent prank pulling assailant, which range from the stupid to the outright idiotic; pretty much all of which he thinks are hilarious, which is very often not the case.
Toby feels as though he always has to have his mind focused on one task or other. Once he gets an idea in his head he’ll often stick to it regardless of the potential consequences. He often acts on impulse, acting before he thinks under the pretense that it “seemed like a good idea at the time”.
Far from an aggressive man, it generally takes a lot to rile him up and get a fight out of Toby, and he’s often the one backing down, especially when he knows he’s outmanned or outpowered, even if he knows he’s in the right. Younger he used to get into a few fights, but following a traumatic incident how fears violence and confrontation.
He’s generally friendly, a bright character who seems to take delight in winding others up, which he sees as being all in good fun.
Inwardly however, his loud, positive attitude disguises a man who thinks very little of himself. He feels the only things in life he’s achieved were to do with his ability, and beyond that he hasn’t much to show for his 29 years on the planet. Toby thinks of himself as weak, and although he’s desperate to prove otherwise and acts as though his lack of achievement doesn’t phase him, each time he misses the mark he feels he merely reinforces time and again that he’s a failure. He fears being forgotten, of being worthless; He’s a man who craves being accepted, and is desperate to prove himself a useful member of the Bellefonte staff, and to the world in general.
Having struggled through education Toby thinks little of his own intelligence, although he won’t admit it, and cares far more then he lets on about what people think of him. He’s aware that the often childish way he acts earns him little respect from the other members of staff and students alike, but he feels he has little else to offer.
His main joy, the man’s central driving force in his life, are his students; whom he teaches with surprising dedication, often going above and beyond for their care, especially those under his training. While he’s flippant, silly and almost attention seeking out of class, while teaching Toby showcases his understanding and patience, oblivious to himself demonstrating his true potential as a trainer and educator, and as a respectable man.
(This is likely the reason why he hasn’t been fired yet.)
EXTRA QUIRK:
Toby’s ability has also made him a walking lightning rod, having been struck around five times since his powers manifested; Although seemingly gaining no ill effects save a few burns, Toby still feels uneasy about going outside when there’s electricity in the air, and has become quite obsessed with the weather.

CHILDHOOD:
Toby was born to a simple hardworking family in Chicago, the youngest of three. He was born with a weak immune system, and spent the first few years of his life in and out of hospital. Growing up he was often falling ill, and with the help of the hospital he managed to build up his body’s weak defenses, although even to this day he’s prone to easily catching colds or flu. Due to his heath issues, his family fussed and flustered around him, bathing him in attention.
He enjoyed growing up the big city, his family is large and family gatherings were frequent; Toby was rarely not surrounded by family.
Toby’s brothers, Victor and Frank, were twins who excelled in nearly every aspect of their lives. By the time Toby was 5, they’d both graduated school early and had moved onto college, winning a number of awards in various creative arts and receiving a number of sentiments from prestigious people. Hoping Toby was going to follow a similar path in life, Alexander and his wife enrolled their youngest son in early development programs and pushed the young boy to show interest in hobbies such as art and drama.
Toby however didn’t show much interest, and not obviously showcasing any exceptional talents, was dropped from the program much to his parents embarrassment. They soon began to firmly focus their attentions solely on his brothers, suddenly depriving Toby of the attention he’d been nearly constantly surrounded by since he was born; As such the young Toby began to act out, often faking illness in order to gain his parents attention.
Despite the clear favoring of Victor and Frank, Toby didn’t feel any hatred towards them, and was in fact in awe of his siblings; and noting how his family showered them with attention and praise for their achievements, a young Toby promised his family that he was going to be just as exceptional as they were once he started school.
ADOLESCENCE:
Upon entering school, Toby was intent on following in the footsteps of his two older brothers. Despite his best efforts however, Toby began to falter, unable to keep up the level that his parents expected from him. Very quickly, his grades slumped, and he began to act out again, slipping into the role of class clown. This gave him the attention of his fellow students, whom he reveled in, since his parents had all but given up on him in terms of his education. He pulled pranks, acting up in class, and frequently snuck out of his home to hang out with his friends. He was arrested at 13 for being drunk and disorderly and insulting nightclub doorman, which resulted in a horrific argument with his Father who commented cruelly on Toby being his “life’s failure”. Although he later recounted the comment and apologized, it was something Toby never forgot.
It was at age 14 that his power manifested; Toby had begun to suffer with bizarre static shocks after entering puberty, often electrocuting nearby students or family members. These however began to increase dramatically at age 14, and it was some weeks later that Toby was going through the power cabinet at the back of his school’s theatre, having been dared to throw out the power during the drama class’s final end of year performance, that his power fully manifested.
Waiting until the most dramatic moment of “An Inspector Calls” to pull the main plug, a spark from the mains supply electrocuted him, which triggered a surge from his own body. This sent Toby flying back, badly burned, and threw the entire street into darkness.
In the days following while he recovered from his burns while in hospital, Toby had to wear rubber gloves as he seemed unable to touch anyone or anything electrical without causing some sort of static shock or frying electrical wires. It was also at this time he became gradually more hyperactive and excitable, the newly manifested ability enhancing the electrical connections in his brain as though it was hyped on caffeine. While he seemed to be able to think faster, it didn’t increase his intelligence.
His parents, whom feared their son ill, were relieved when a representative arrived, explaining Toby’s mutant status. Far from fearing him, Alexander and Tilly leapt on the new notion that their youngest son, although not academically successful, was still special. Suddenly with the attention shifted back onto himself, Toby was more then ready to enroll at Bellefonte Academy, hoping that this was his fresh start; he was finally going to make his family proud.
Bellefonte Academy however proved to be no easier then the school he’d come from, and it didn’t take long for him to falter academically here too. Having thought he was something truly special, Toby was brought back down to earth at the diversity of the other mutants at the school, most far excelling him in their strength and intelligence. Feeling the pressure, Toby soon fell back into his old ways, acting out and becoming well known throughout the Academy for his idiotic pranks.
He struggled throughout his life at Bellefonte to take control of his powers, often still having to wear rubber gloves to avoid shocking his fellow students; As he got frustrated with his studies, he got frustrated with his training, refusing to listen to his trainer and skipping classes. At his worst, Toby was missing the majority of his classes, going out into Kalispell and coming back drunk, and was brought back by the police on three occasions for getting into fights.
One incident however sharply altered Toby’s self destructive course.
Having snuck out again to go clubbing at 17, he got into another fight, this time with a drunken patron who insulted him after Toby accidentally cut in line at the bar. Being kicked out by the doormen, the fight continued outside, and a drunken Toby finally used his ability in a small directional electrical blast. The man collapsed, and while Toby at first claimed victory, it soon became evident that the man wasn’t moving. In a frantic panic both sets of friends bolted, leaving Toby with the fallen man.
Frantic, Toby tried to stir him to no avail, and upon realising his attacker’s heart was no longer beating, he made the split decision to use his electrokinesis as a makeshift defibrillator. It took five attempts to restart the man’s heart, which brought on a heavy nosebleed during and finally resulted in Toby collapsing from overexertion of his ability.
When he awoke, he was in the Academy’s infirmary, and although was told that the other kid had lived, the entire incident terrified Toby, who was raked with guilt at having nearly killed someone.
Before this point he’d never thought his powers were that much of a threat, but now he began to even fear them himself, practically becoming a shut in for weeks.
It was his trainer however who reached out for him, frequently coming to visit the boy in his room, gradually building up his confidence enough to return to his usual classes. It was at this point Toby developed a immense respect for his trainer; No one else had truly taken the time to speak to him, to ask him how he felt, and here this person whom he’d ignored and insulted on more the one occasion was actually taking the time to help him.
Slowly, gently, Toby began showing up to his training sessions, with a drive to finally get his powers under control. His trainer was compassionate, understanding and patient, giving Toby a true drive that he was passionate about for the first time in his life.
ADULTHOOD:
Graduating with average grades but a strong control of his power thanks to the work of his trainer, Toby returned home, to parents who saw him as little more then an underachieving nuisance. Not even bothering to hide their dismay at his life choices, Toby quickly got work as in his Father’s accounting offices in a desperate last attempt to achieve something in their eyes. With accounting not exactly his forte Toby struggled, and was near enough constantly reminded by his Father in his actions such as giving him the simplest tasks to perform that he didn't think him capable, that he was a charity case. This frustrated Toby, but desperate to please his family, he fought valiantly on to try and make something of himself while his brothers were still being bathed in the families' praise and attention.
However, upon hearing his Father openly discuss his fear of Toby’s power after his son had nearly killed someone with the rest of the family at a family event, Toby decided he’d had enough. Applying for the position of a trainer at Bellefonte without telling his Father, Toby decided that it was time he make the one person who ever believed in him proud, the one who had taken such time with him, who had treated him with compassion and respect; His trainer.
Toby has settled back into Academy life effortlessly, but also has readily fallen into old childish habits. Despite his insecurities however, he still feels as though the Academy is far more his home then his own ever was. His Father hasn't spoken to him since he left for the Academy, but Toby still remains in contact with his Mother and siblings. He hopes one day to reconcile with his Father, and for once for his Father and his family to be proud of him.
