NAME: Samantha Veta-Laramie (Soon to be sans Laramie)
NICKNAME: She was the semi-famous Dr. Laramie and preferred to be referred to as such, however recent circumstances have left her desiring to shed that old self. Dr. Veta or just Samantha work, or perhaps even Professor? She doesn't care much, as long as it isn't disrespectful.
AGE: 43
GENDER: Female
ORIENTATION: Heterosexual
POSITION: Biology Teacher/Genetic Mutation Specialist
FACE CLAIM: Karla Estrada
POWER:
Telekinesis
Samantha's power allows her to move objects with her mind. When her power first developed, she could only lift one small object at a time for a short period of time, but over years of training and mental exercises, she can now levitate several objects simultaneously and independently from one another practically effortlessly, as long as they aren't too heavy. In fact, she rarely lifts things with her hands anymore, preferring to use Telekinesis for daily tasks. She can lift heavier objects via her telekinesis, however she must focus harder and incur more strain in order to move them. Although mostly unnecessary at her skill level, movement helps to increase her power, especially when mimicking the intended motion of the object. This is because it helps her concentrate her power onto that sole task and give herself a clear channel for her ability.
Limitations
- Heavier objects are much harder to lift
- Must have at least partial concentration on each object, although she has excellent multitasking skills.
- Emotional or Physical stress (such as receiving bad news or being ill) makes using her power more difficult.
Side-Effects
- Headaches from overuse
- Mental and even physical exhaustion from lifting heavy or too many objects
- Serious muscle or brain damage if used to a point of "burnout", most common when stopping a fast, large object or other large scale, sudden power usage without taking precautions or knowing limits.
APPEARANCE SECTION: Samantha is approximately 5'5 and 170 pounds. She is often described as having soft features, and darker tan skin. She has dark brown hair that is slightly longer than shoulder length, which is usually left down except during lab work, during which it is done in a ponytail for safety reasons. Her eyes are the same dark brown as her hair, and unlike her son, they tend to stay that way. When incredibly focused or determined, she has an unnervingly piercing gaze that seems to stare straight into a person's soul.
Despite being somewhat larger than the average woman of her background, Samantha is usually comfortable about her body and not self-conscious about it. While she does miss the perfect body she once had in youth, she finds the reward was worth the cost of the lasting effects of her pregnancy. She held onto her adolescent beliefs on beauty and its superficiality, especially considering the myriad health problems associated with mainstream beauty figures and models. She can't help but wonder, however, if perhaps it would explain her husband's disinterest and pursuit of his younger secretary; as if she needed more proof of his true nature.
MUST HAVE APPAREL: Samantha is almost seen wearing her labcoat, whether she's teaching or doing scientific research. Its practical and also adds to her scientist "image", as she often refers to it. She also usually wears heels, for added professionalism.
PERSONALITY SECTION: Samantha is a very calm, compassionate person. She has a soft demeanor, and moves with grace. She carefully considers her words before speaking, and as such comes off both very educated, if a bit boring. However, once one gets to know her, they find she can be a very entertaining person. She has a tendency to become hyper-focused on tasks, often spending hours on minor or unimportant projects simply because the idea is there. She has a willingness to do whatever it takes for her career, often leading to her sometimes seeming calculated or slightly manipulative.
Her usual calm self all but disappears when talking about something she is passionate about, sometimes to the point of not being understood because she is talking too quickly and excitedly. These things are almost exclusively centered around her work, whether she's teaching a loved topic or having an intellectual discussion with a fellow intellectual. Although she is usually quite composed, with a gentle demeanor, all bets are off when someone she cares about is in danger, particularly her son. She can be a bit of a "mother bear", as the saying goes. She is very protective of him, and while she tries not to smother or crowd him, she can't help but worry about how he is adjusting to life at Bellefonte.
EXTRA QUIRK: Despite her caring nature, in her days at Bellefonte she dabbled in Arena fighting. She spent a lot of her free time finding new and creative ways to use her power in combat situations, although most of them have fallen to disuse after graduation.
FATHER: Unknown (Mutant - Mind-Reading)
MOTHER: Malaya Veta (Non-Mutant)
SIBLINGS: None
PET: None
SIGNIFICANT OTHER: Leon Laramie - Soon-to-be Ex-Husband
WORTHY MENTIONS: Cassidy Laramie - Son. Avlynn Laramie - Mentee/Unofficially adopted daughter
CHILDHOOD: Samantha remembers very little from her early childhood, and relies on her mother's stories to know anything about her past. Her mother never talked about her father much, only that he was a "bad man" who used her to get into America. She would often caution her, saying "Never trust a man, Samantha. They know what you want to hear, and they will use it against you."
She grew up in a small house with just her mother and herself. Her mother managed to support them with two jobs, having had to take another job after her divorce from her husband shortly after he became a US citizen. She looked up to her mother, seeing her as a role model, something to grow up to be. She dedicated herself to learning as much as she could even at her young age so that one day she could be a strong, working woman like her mother.
ADOLESCENCE: Despite her less-than-perfect childhood, Samantha grew into a relatively normal, if a bit shy, teenager. She did well in her classes, and was often labeled the class nerd, but she didn't particularly mind; in fact, she took it as a compliment to her intelligence. She didn't spend much time making friends, and spent the first half of her Freshman year in the science lab during lunch, helping her teacher with anything he needed. He became another role-model, in a sense, and was the one who pushed her to be more outgoing in her social life. More importantly, he pushed her to trust; not all men would be like her father, and it was no good for her to lock herself away from other people in case they might break her heart.
Upset by Samantha's lack of friends, he assigned a new group project, pairing her with another girl in the class. Samantha was dismayed at this, as she had a relatively low opinion of the other girl, a social butterfly on the dance team with a somewhat air-headed personality. While Samantha took diligent notes on the project's topic and began research, her group partner absent-mindedly doodled in her notebook, occasionally passing notes with her friends, not even attempting to understand the concepts. When confronted she merely responded that she "wouldn't need science in life anyway, so what was the point?" It wasn't until Samantha got fed up and snatched the notebook of drawings away that things began to change.
The drawings were incredibly detailed and realistic, the shadows and highlights expertly shaded in pencil. Most of the scenes appeared to be a first person point of view from the student's perspective, showing scenes of friends talking and laughing, a popular boy at school seemingly in deep conversation with the artist, a dancer on stage in front of a huge audience, and even, a scene of herself, her hair frazzled and pencil flying across the page while the teacher watched in amusement. This was some real talent, the deep emotions of some of the scenes different from the air-headed, popular girl stereotype that she saw. They spent the rest of the class talking, having real conversation, and Samantha found herself accepted into a group of friends and spent less and less time in the classroom between classes. While she was terrible at it herself, she appreciated dance as both and art and the physics behind it. However, it didn't last long, as one trivial argument changed everything.
Samantha was aghast at her friend's suggestion to go to a much-talked about party. There were going to be boys there; Senior boys! Her mom would not be happy if she found out she had been to a party like that. Her friend told her to stop worrying, that it would be fine and it was easy to sneak out after dark. Things got heated and her friend stormed off, angrily heading towards the crosswalk in the direction of her house without checking the street. A truck barreled down the street, the driver oblivious to the road in front of him. Her friend froze like a deer in headlights, staring at the truck heading towards her. As Samantha cried out and rushed to do something, anything, she felt a buzzing sensation in her head that traveled down her outstretched arms, and she swore she could feel the weight of the truck pushing against her arms despite still being several feet away. It seemed to her as if time slowed down, until she realized it wasn't time, but the truck that had slowed. The dull buzzing grew into a painful roar, her strength pitted against the bulk of machine as her friend stared, terrified and dumbfounded. Samantha put up a valiant effort, but it was clear the truck was winning; she could feel her muscles burning and tearing, and her head felt like someone was drilling through it. The last thing she remembered was the sensation of being pushed before she blacked out.
Samantha awoke to the sound of a commotion, several blurry faces of doctors and nurses filling her vision. After somewhat groggily gaining her bearings, she spotted her mother, whose tearful expression was hard to understand. Next to her was a strange, official-looking man who glanced somewhat impatiently towards the other side of her hospital bed. Samantha followed his gaze, turning slightly, and found her friend sitting in a chair nearby. The chair looked odd, with two large wheels on it, and it took several moments to understand what she was looking at; when the realization hit her, her heart dropped. Her friend didn't seem to notice her horrified staring, only proceeded to begin talking excitedly, although her cheerful expression couldn't quite mask the signs of prolonged worry. "Jeez, took you long enough! You've been sleeping for weeks, do you realize just how boring it's been around here without you?" she huffed in irritation. Samantha simply stared, barely unable to comprehend that she'd been in a coma for weeks; it felt like only yesterday she'd been in that crazy accident.
"What were you thinking, running out after me? You're lucky the driver swerved at the last second, we could've both been killed!" her friend continued lecturing. Samantha looked at her strangely, as she definitely remembered it differently from what her friend just described, but an almost imperceptible wink made her pause. The man was looking at her friend in a mix of suspicion and appraisal, as if he was trying to analyze everything she said. Seeming as if she was ignoring the man, her friend began rambling on about what she'd missed at school, although she occasionally threw subtle glances his way. As soon as he stopped looking to speak with Samantha's mother, she pushed her wheel chair back slightly to get to her bag, quickly pulling out her notebook and flipping through it to find a page partially stuck to another.
She showed it to Samantha, revealing a sketch of the accident; Samantha posed with her arms outstretched, her face wearing a fierce, determined snarl as she battled against the truck, little swirls and lightning bolt-ish shapes surrounding Samantha and the truck. Near the bottom of the frame, a hand reached out towards her. Samantha was dumbfounded, and was especially sure that she hadn't looked nearly that cool. She remembered feeling a pushing sensation, and the drawing combined with her friend's condition finally made the whole thing come together. She tried to come up with something to say, but her
friend simply put a finger to her lips slyly and closed the book, the page re-sticking to the page after and hiding itself from view.
After a few more minutes of talking and catching up, her friend said goodbye and wheeled herself out of the room. The man explained about her power and going to the Bellefonte Academy, a special school for people like her. She left as soon as she fully recovered, and soon grew to like her new school. She found herself with a rather large group of friends, as she was able to fit in to several groups of people. She spent plenty of time with some dedicated Arena competitors, who valued her ability for its combative uses and pushed her to constantly train her power. She never stopped loving science, and further divided her time between her fellow scholars and the more social types that she began to appreciate in her brief time in regular highschool. She graduated at eighteen and continued her studies into college.
ADULTHOOD: She majored in genetics in college, remaining in the Kalispell area for her Bachelor's degree, however she left in order to pursue further education elsewhere. It was during her studies that she met the famous Leon Laramie, who recently took over control of his business from his father. It had been a rather simple project, a study of the lineage of a modern celebrity and their passed on traits, and she was fortunate enough to be able to interview Leon personally. One thing led to another, and she soon found herself romantically involved with him; he'd turned out to be quite the smooth-talker, unfortunately for Samantha.
Ignoring her mother's warnings, they were married a few years later, and a few years after that, had a son, Cassidy. Despite her much busier personal life, she managed to get her PhD by 30 and began running her own lab, which studied mutant genetics under the guise of identifying genetic disorders. Her marriage also had the advantage of aquiring plenty of funding for their research without the burdon of needing to present their work to their sponsors. She somewhat successfully juggled her work and personal life, however she does regret not spending as much time with Cassidy as she should have when he was younger.
As Cassidy grew up, Samantha became more concerned that he was too isolated and lonely. Her husband brushed off her concerns, suggesting that they buy him a dog to solve the problem. However, Samantha knew there was a good chance that Cassidy would develop a mutation, considering she was a mutant herself, and she suspected from her research of the family that at least one of Leon's ancestors was a mutant as well. She knew a dog wouldn't be allowed at the school; it'd be cruel to give him a pet he'd have to part with so soon. Besides, she'd like to be sure that he had someone looking after him while he was gone. So she began doing research, finding quite a few shifters that wouldn't mind the overcover employment, but Cassidy was having none of it. He wanted a fox not a dog or any other more convienent animal. With a lot of digging, Samantha managed to find information a fox shifter by the name of Avlynn Igeal, however there was no known location listed.
When Samantha finally found Avlynn, the shifter was in a terrible state. She had been through a trying ordeal, and it almost seemed impossible for her to ever fully recover from what she had experienced. But after four years of slowly healing and building trust between the two of them, Samantha was able to get Avlynn almost to a new sort of normal for the girl. The two developed a deep bond, to the point where Avlynn felt more like a daughter than a patient or employee, and after a time even took to using the name Laramie, desiring to rid herself of her old identity. On Cassidy's 10th birthday, Samantha introduced the two without revealing Avlynn's true identity; neither Cassidy nor his father were aware of her connection to mutants, and it was safer if they didn't at all unless it was unavoidable. Five years went by, until the day Cassidy's ability finally
manifested.
After Cassidy, and subsequently Avylnn, left for Bellefonte, Samantha was left to deal with the backlash from Cassidy's accusations. The media constantly swarmed the house and her work, vying for interviews and comments on her husband's affair and where their relationship stood. The truth was, she wasn't even sure how to answer them even if she wanted to. At first, Leon denied the accusations, but it was his word against Cassidy's; the word of a man who had shown himself adept at charming the un-charmable against a mutant who's power was specifically geared towards sensing these sorts of things. Eventually she had to come to terms with the fact that things were over, and began moving towards divorce. Things are still in the works, however she is fairly certain she'll get enough out of it to support herself, Cassidy, and her research, along with the
added payment from her teaching position. She'd heard they were hiring, and as she really no longer had anywhere to be, she left her lab in the capable hands of her employees and came to Bellefonte, determined to never look back.
