ERYN JAMES WHITE
51//MALE//PANSEXUAL//POWER SENSING AND TELEPATHY//RECRUITER AND HEAD TRAINER AT BELLEFONTE//JACK COLEMAN
POWER INFO:
Power Sensing: A passive ability that provides Eryn a sixth sense to actually be able to detect other mutants around him. He cannot turn off this ability, though he has learned to tune it out if he requires his full focus on something else. The range of this ability is dependent on a few things. The most important factor is focus, but a second one that is nearly as important is vision. He is perfectly capable of detecting through solid objects, but if he cannot physically see the mutant, his range is limited to about fifty yards. The vision element can be assisted by technological means, such as binoculars, though not remote cameras or the such.
Telepathy: An active ability, which is Eryn's bread and butter. He's spent most of his life using this power to assist him in various forms, and as such has become very good at it. He's a fairly powerful telepath naturally, but because of his constant use, and actively training it, he is considered extremely talented at it. His telepathy allows him a number of abilities:
- Hearing active thoughts
- Transmitting his own thoughts
- Viewing memories (Can usually be detected)
- Editing/Destroying memories (Very much detectable)
- Adding false memories (Difficult to do in such a way that they're not recognized as fake)
- Inserting surface level thoughts
Essentially, between Eryn's natural talent and his many years of practice, the mind is his domain, allowing him all manner of abilities. The more advanced and powerful ones though are too invasive for the most part to go undetected by conscious targets though.
GENERAL APPEARANCE: Eryn is fifty-one years old, and certainly doesn't look young, but he does a good job of keeping in solid shape, if only because of his past training. He six foot two, and keeps his hair trimmed to about an inch and a half from his head. He has very dark blue eyes, with a bit of a squint. He has a very fatherly demeanor and attitude. His voice is a low baritone, and his rate of speech has a soothing rhythm.
MUST HAVE APPAREL:
Eryn is almost always dressed in something with a collar, whether a full business suit, or just a button down shirt with a jacket over it. He also regularly wears a set of browline glasses, which some people mistake as "horn-rimmed glasses" instead. He doesn't actually need them, but feels they are a helpful piece of his appearance.
PERSONALITY:
Public: Eryn has a very personable attitude. He is generally very cheerful,
and to students and even young staff members, quite fatherly. He all but
radiates an attitude of mature control, never seeming rushed or panicky. He
always has time to speak to someone if they need his ear, and regularly has
fatherly advice to help with whatever their problem may be. To top it off, he
is very good at coming off as non-judgmental, playing the mediator without
picking sides. This has led him to become the go-to for a number of the
students when they are having troubles or problems. He doesn't mind this at
all, and almost encourages it by having a ready stash of snacks and drinks in
his office. He prefers to be called "Mr. Eryn" rather than "Mr. White" or
something like that, though he responds to both, as well as the few youth who
like to try and be smart and just call him by his first name
Private: For his organization, Eryn goes by the name "The Mentalist" and only a
few people actually know his real face. He prefers to operate through
telepathic communication, his true identity something he is always careful to
reveal. The Mentalist is an incredibly devious man, full of cunning and
trickery. He is willing to do almost anything it takes to reach his ends. His
one greatest weakness though his is "family" as he calls him. The members of
his organization. He values them above almost all else.
When The Mentalist speaks, it is very nearly always in a very calm and
controlled voice. The rhythm of his voice is borderline hypnotic, and makes it
much easier to trust what he says as truth. In fact, The Mentalist almost
always tells the truth when speaking, preferring to simply state that he can't
or won't tell someone something, rather than lie to them.
EXTRA QUIRK: Loyalty and family are the two biggest things for Eryn. Since he has no biological family anymore, he embraces bringing others under his wing as a family.
He would die for a family member without hesitation, and has great respect for someone protecting their own family.

Eryn White was born in the year 1968 in a small farm, in northern Colorado. He was never recruited by a mutant school. Between living in such a small town, the lack of an internet, and how his abilities were very subtle, none of the resources at the time managed to locate him. He spent most of his childhood as a fairly normal person, though as he arrived into high school he began to notice strange things. Most people would attribute it to strong intuition, or just being lucky. Around other people, he was just more vitalized. He wasn't always in the right place at the right time, but he was almost never in the wrong one. He always seemed to know just what to say. He discovered that he didn't even have to study for most tests, the answers just seemed to pop into his mind at just the right time. Despite this, he still studied, always nervous that his extraordinary luck was going to run out without warning, fear of failure driving him to always do better. Due to all of this, his grades were exemplary. He signed up for a degree in International Relations at the University of Rochester.
It was at college that he looked into his abilities more specifically,
realizing that there was something more than luck behind them. Finally in a
larger city, he also noticed something more. Every once in a while, he'd run
into someone who had a strange aura about them. By spending more time and
focus on it, he discovered that he had certain skills that seemed impossible.
Specifically, he began to realize he could read minds. At first he could only
get general impressions, though if a large group of people were thinking the
same thing around him, such as during a test, or at a church praying, he could
get a much clearer thought. However with practice, by the end of his four
years in college, he could pick out individual thoughts from people, as well as
send thoughts into other people's minds.
First thing he did after graduating, was to signup with the Central
Intelligence Agency as an "intelligence operative" which, to most people, means
spy. He spent quite some time going all over the place. Countries that most
people only hear about in the news, Eryn spent weeks and months in, often with
the constant risk of death over his head. His gift came in unbelievably useful
throughout his work. People tend to answer questions in their mind, when
asked, even if they don't say them out loud. It's also nearly impossible to
sneak up on someone who can hear thoughts, or to otherwise catch him by
surprise. As a few years passed, he also took more notice of the other sense
he had. Auras around a few people. After plenty of time pursuing it, he
realized he could detect people with powers like his. This power wasn't as
distinctly useful as his telepathy, but he kept it in his mind, watching for
those with it, doing his own research.
Something he did notice was that he had an aura as well, and almost by accident, he discovered that he could make it lessen. His aura had two distinct colors, which he made a leap in reasoning and assumed (correctly) that one was for his telepathy, the other was for his ability to sense powers. He slowly began to find out how to make his aura for telepathy smaller and smaller, his habit for practicing skills he didn't expect to need leading him to unintentionally become quite skilled at suppressing his telepathy. He wouldn't learn of it for years, but while suppressing his own abilities, they were no longer detectable by other sensors, though he also couldn't access them. He also later learned that anyone could learn to suppress any abilities that we're passively on all the time.
Towards the end of his career, Eryn finally found a special department of the
government, a small office with access to most resources that they need.
Maintaining his own secrets, he discovered that their job was observation of
"mutants" and that their primary job was sending youth who were discovered as
mutants to a school somewhere in Montana. Using all of his intelligence
gathering, he did locate the school without directly revealing his own gifts.
Finally the time came to retire from the game, and so he had to decide what to
do with his life. However something happened before he made any particular
decisions. His widowed mother died. His father had died nearly ten years ago,
leaving his fairly prosperous business to his wife. With her dying, the small
chain of stores that sold farming equipment was left to him. He knew that he
wasn't the kind to sit and just run it, so he quickly sold forty-nine percent
of the company to the highest bidder, making a reasonable profit while still
maintaining a very nice income in the meantime.
During this time, Eryn thought very hard on what to do with himself. He knew
that if there were more like him, people with these powers, he would have to
meet them. But he also knew from his time in the government exactly what
happened to people who were seen as a threat. And people with powers like
these would undoubtedly be seen as a threat. Realizing that he had a truly
unique opportunity, he reached a final decision. He would gather a group of
people like him, expecting the government to turn on his kind, as he knew it
would, and he would be there to step in and protect them. Maybe even replace the
current government. It was with this in mind that he began his work, joining
onto the staff of Bellefonte as a recruiter and power trainer, and almost
immediately began putting their resources to work for him, subtly recruiting
people for his own causes. His first actions was to actively hide his telepathy ability around anyone who might have power sensing capabilities, letting everyone believe that he was only a sensor. He took it slow, mostly just reaching out, meeting
people, and getting a sense for things. When he felt completely comfortable
with a person, he would persuade them to his cause. It was slow going, and the
few students he eventually recruited still went to the school for now so as to
avoid raising suspicion.

SAMPLE: The Mentalist jogged down the dark street. He was breathing heavily, but making every effort to keep quiet. Easier said than done. He may be in shape, but he was still winded from his most recent encounter. Turning a corner cautiously, he found a dead end occupied only by a few trash bins and dumpsters. As good a place as any to hide for now. Swallowing harshly, he lodged himself in dark corner between a dumpster and a tarnished metal bin. As he bent his legs to sit himself down, he reached behind himself and extracted a small pistol from between his back and belt. Gripping the weapon in one hand, he took a steadying breath, tightening the small silence that was screwed onto the barrel. Then he opened his senses. Specifically his mental one. Listening for thoughts around him, he quickly tuned into a small group of men about eighty feet from his location. The ones who had been chasing him to begin with.
Listening into their minds, he heard them speaking in the local tongue, some variant of Spanish. He couldn't make out what they were thinking and so he dug a bit deeper, listening now instead to their intentions and moods. Baser human emotions that were a bit more vague but much easier to understand. There were five of them, and they were still looking for him, barreling down an alleyway that he himself had passed through scant minutes beforehand. When they reached the intersection, three went one way, and two came down the street that he had just been on. They were now close enough that he could hear their feet pounding on the cobblestones, and even their voices as they spoke to each other, his mind reading informing him that they were actually discussing the local sports scores rather than their task at hand. However once they saw the next intersection they quickly decided to send one of the pair along the other route, and the second would investigate this alcove and catch up if they didn't find anything.
Seeing the thug pull a gun out from a holster on his thigh, Eryn's grip tightened on his own firearm. The first man had just left, and now the second was poking around in some of the shadows. He had orders to kill, Eryn knew because of his gift. Eryn considered trying to take a shot at the man first, but knew that even a slight movement right now may cause the thug to shoot out of reflex, and end up hurting or killing him. So he paused and thought. Quickly realizing he had little choice, he used a more advanced form of his gift, and put a thought into the other man's head. Specifically, the thought of a sound from away from Eryn's location. As the goon spun around and pointed his gun at the non-existent noise, Eryn quickly and silently rose into a position, his gun targeting thug, and pulled his trigger twice. The shots were quiet, but still deadly, thanks to his silencer. The other man didn't have a choice, the shock of the bullets causing his hand to open, his own gun dropping to the ground, the goon turning around as he fell, dead as he hit the ground. Stepping over the corpse, Eryn didn't look down, his face passive and uncaring. Taking a deep breath, confirming he had rested long enough to return to his escape, he checked around for any minds that might be searching for him. Figuring out a safe route, he ran again.
