NAME: Cody Cornelius Crabb
NICKNAME: Probably just Cody
AGE: 18
GENDER: Male
ORIENTATION: Heterosexual
POSITION: College Student
FACE CLAIM: Callan McAuliffe
POWER:
Empathic Sensory
Cody can sense what emotions people are feeling by touching them. He can sense what the varied levels of different emotions are, being able to access and read what is dominant in that person at that time and what else they may be feeling along with it. He can only do this by touching them. Bellefonte academy professors have tried telling him that he could learn to expand this and read emotions without touching, but so far he's refused to try. He's not ashamed of being a mutant, but he is scared of all the emotions he's felt and doesn't want to be able to feel them even more than he already can.
Professors have also suggested that he try extending his reach to emotional manipulation. He hasn't really found a use for it, but he is more interested in this idea than in the idea of feeling emotions from a distance. Why? Because there is a lot of good he could do with this. He could calm someones anger, help groups to be more relaxed and able to listen in a meeting and so much more. He has just barely started getting interested in this idea, but he hasn't gone about making it happen yet. Part of him knows that in order to affect peoples emotions from a distance he probably has to learn to feel them from a distance as well. He's been struggling over this idea.
Limitations
His power only works when he is making physical contact with the person. However, he can still feel their emotions if there is fabric in the way but it is a lot stronger when it is skin on skin contact.
Side-Effects
--He often can have breakdowns when he is touching someone for too long because of the emotional overload.
--He often acts apathetic because he can't bear to feel big emotions on a daily bases because of all the things he feels from others.
--He usually avoids buses or other similarly crowded places, but when he is in those situations, shoulder to shoulder with multiple people at once, all the emotions growing inside him can cause him to stat shaking, almost to the point of a seizure. He hasn't tried it yet, for good reason, but if he was int hat situation for a long time he would probably actually have a bad seizure and need medical attention.
--He can't hear peoples thoughts, which is comforting, but it does take him some time to wear off the side affects of particularly strong emotions. Example; if he touches someone who is furious it may take him a while to wind down from that emotion, depending on how severe it was.
--Once he feels someones emotions his own emotions can spike int hat particular area, but his apathetic way of gliding through life has helped him control this to an extent.
--He often goes on walks in the middle of the night for two reasons; one, because he is able to feel his own emotions with little to no interference and two, because they pain and sufferings of those he happened to bump into throughout the day plague his thoughts and he has to wind down before he can fall asleep. Sometimes, the feelings of others come back to him and wake him up.

APPEARANCE SECTION: Cody has brown hair and green eyes with a strong jaw and chin. If he didn't hide himself so much, people would probably take notice of how handsome he really is. Cody tries his best to blend in with the crowd and wears long sleeves to cover his skin in public. He walks with shoulders hunched and his head down, trying to avoid as much attention and physical contact as he can.
In class he sits in the back, hoping not to get noticed too much by teachers or other students. He doesn't want to get called on, he doesn't even want people to know his name. He, being someone who used to notice the loners and befriend them, tries extremely hard to avoid the nice and outgoing types who give him those you need a friend looks. He has become an expert at dodging crowds in hallways and participating in group activities.
MUST HAVE APPAREL: Cody likes to blend in mostly wearing neutral colors like greys and browns. He also wears long sleeves, jackets, and gloves sometimes because he often doesn't want to bump into someone and feel all the emotions that they are feeling. It's very rare to catch him in shorts or a short sleeved shirt, unless he is alone in his room.
PERSONALITY SECTION:
Cody is quiet and contemplative, and tries to give an air of apathy. He doesn't want people thinking he cares about their problems because he doesn't want to comfort them. He knows that he's basically useless as a comforter because he doesn't touch people. He doesn't like to make himself known and tries his best to blend in, as mentioned above. He has become quite a secluded little hermit since discovering his powers.
Underneath all that shy, calm and uninterested facade however is a boy who cares deeply for the others around him. His main reason for deciding to stay for college was because he was worried about his fellow students, even know he never really spoke with any of them. In his history, you'll see that he used to be someone with a lot of friends who always wanted to make others happy and care for them. Deep down he's still that boy, but his mutation as frightened him and taken him into a dark place. A place where he doesn't think he can be of use to anyone, and where he doesn't want to help people because he can't stand to feel their pain. Truly, somewhere inside him, is still the teenager who is passionate about his friends and cares for people deeply, but his dear has overtaken him.
Some would call him a coward, if they really got to know him. Because he's afraid of knowing what everyone is feeling. He doesn't want to know what they feel about him, about themselves about their situations. For one, he thinks emotions should be private and that his power is just a way to invade other peoples privacy. He also gets overwhelmed easily by the heavy mix of emotions that come from even just one person. He can read the layers, so many layers, of emotions and this can get to be too much.
EXTRA QUIRK: I would say his extra quirk is probably the fact that he really likes to make up jokes. He only uses them to amuse himself, of course. He mostly does this because in order to maintain his uncaring facade in public, he has to let some emotions out every now and then. Happiness, or in this case laughter, is the best way to let your emotions go.
FATHER: Carson Crabb
MOTHER: Andrea Carver
SIBLINGS: Two half siblings; Brother, 14, Arrow Crabb and Sister, 21, Amelia Carver.
PET: -
SIGNIFICANT OTHER: -
WORTHY MENTIONS: Kylee Mortenson, explained in history.
CHILDHOOD: Codys family relationships were complicated and irritating, at least that's what he thought of them. His mother, Andrea was married to a man with the surname of Carver, that's all Cody really knew about him. She had a daughter, Amelia, but three years later she cheated on her husband with Codys dad and ended up getting divorced. Cody doesn't know his half sister at all, and has only heard about her because his father told him about his mothers past. His mother only stayed with he and his father for two years before their relationship fell apart as well and she left. Cody hasn't seen his mother since. He assumes she went back to her 'real' family. With her legitimate child. He assumes that her ex husband took her back and that she has been living a happy and full life without him.
This has often been the cause of much bitterness in Codys life. His father, Carson, raised him with so much love and care trying to make up for what his mother did. Cody grew up very grateful for his mother, but still lacking a mother figure in his life. When he was in second grade, he grew very close to his teacher and tried to set her up with his father more than once, but to no avail. Cody often found himself trying to not feel emotional, because he would often have breakdowns about his mothers abandonment. He acted apathetic and uninterested, but he always seemed to notice other peoples feelings. He was drawn to those in pain who needed a shoulder to cry on and he offered it when needed. He tried not to be empathic too much, but he couldn't help it. He just cared for the other children around him.
He and his father lived in Washington State in a little house and often went fishing, boating or just sat around in the rain. His father is by far his best friend.
ADOLESCENCE: Growing up in Washington was probably not the best place for someone who was trying to live an apathetic life. The rain, the water, the music, the lights. Everything about Washington, especially Seattle, called out for one to feel emotional and think deep. Cody was popular in middle school, but in a different way than the typical jock type. He started to embrace his need to comfort others and become someone that everyone would turn to for advice, help and comfort. He soon learned that being someones confidant was far better than ignoring everyone and being cold hearted. He was happy to help.
But all of that changed. At age 16 he started to notice that he wasn't just catching onto peoples emotions from their outward expressions, but that he was actually feeling them. Someone would smile and give him a high five, and suddenly he'd feel a wave of sadness or regret. He started to realize that these peoples outward emotions were different than the impressions he was getting. Then he started to notice that it was only when he actually touched them that he could tell that they were faking it. This process of slowly finding out that he was indeed feeling others emotions through touch, emphatically, lasted for a week before the thing that convinced him of his power happened.
A good friend of his, Kylee Mortenson, and he were spending time together at a friends house. In a crowded room, Kylee sat next to Cody on the couch. They talked, laughed, joked around like they always did. Cody always thought of her like a sister. Someone who he could really trust and who he could rely on. But that was all he thought of her. When the group crowded into the living room to watch a movie, V for Vendetta, Kylee suddenly reached over and took Codys hand. Love, lust, impatience, nervousness... suddenly Cody could feel everything that she was feeling. There were also hints of sadness... joy and... was that anger? He started to go rigid. He knew that he was feeling her emotions, not his own. He yanked his hands from hers and stood up, shaking. Before anyone could say anything he ran out of the room and right into the Bellefonte scouts arms.
He was offered a chance to leave with them to the academy. Without even thinking he said yes. He needed to get out of there. Away from all those people who grew up knowing him as the shoulder to cry on. He needed to start fresh. He needed to become someone else. Someone people didn't touch. Someone apathetic. Someone lonely.
The conversation with his father was the biggest surprise of all. Carson didn't act the least bit surprised. He assumed that Andrea had a sort of mutation as well, seeing as things would move around in the house without her even touching them back when she lived with them. Cody had no memory of this. With his fathers blessing, he left to join the mutants at the academy. He'd never been interested in finding his mother before, but now he had something to connect with her. Now he had so many questions. But he had no idea how to start looking. All of this was happening so fast.
During his time at the academy Cody made a new reputation for himself. Long sleeves, gloves, scarfs. As long as his skin didn't brush anyone elses he was safe. He didn't make many friends, and that was on purpose. He couldn't stand the emotions coming from those around him. Even with fabric in the way, he could still bump into someone and get a slight hint of what they were feeling. He grew scared of crowds. Of friends. Of closeness. The boy who was once everyones shoulder to cry on, had become the boy with no offer of support at all. Whenever he touches someone briefly, even for a short moment, their pain and sorrow would overwhelm him.
During his three years at the academy, before he moved to the college level, his professors tried to teach him how to hone his powers. Many suggested that he try reaching out to peoples emotions without even touching them, but there was a problem with that. Cody didn't want to feel their emotions. He didn't want this power. This caused the teachers to try and teach him how to control the power, and only access it when he wants. The only problem was, Cody was a difficult student to work with. Most of the time, he wasn't even willing to try experimenting because he didn't want to know what the teachers were feeling either. Three years it was a struggle to get through to him, and it still is. He has tried to master the art of controlling when his power is active and when it's not, but the idea seems impossible. The best thing to do is to just not touch anybody.
ADULTHOOD: When Cody graduated from the High School portion of school, he was almost ready to leave Bellefonte Academy. However, the problem was that during that very semester the trouble with SPECTRE started, and became known to the public. He wasn't sure if he could live out there, what with his strange elusive behavior. Someone would guess what he was, someone who hated mutants, and he would be killed. He didn't want that. He also didn't want anyone at the school to be put in danger. Even though he didn't want to feel his fellow students emotions, he still did get some. He cared about them, though he doesn't show it.
So he stayed on as a college student, studying generals for the time being. He doesn't know what he wants to be when he grows up... at this point he doesn't even know if he's going to be able to grow up. The world is a scary and dangerous place. After a summer of visiting with his father, he's back at Bellefonte and trying to find his calling. His place. His destiny.
SAMPLE:
Trevor wasn't really one for candy, but he didn't mind getting together with his siblings. Apparently Daniel had invited Selliah to meet with him today, then Selliah contacted Trevor and said he could come as well. It was a little awkward and informal, but Trevor, of course, said he would oblige. He didn't even know if Daniel knew that he was coming. He dressed in a simple black V neck and jeans, leaving his robes aside for the day. This was a gathering with his siblings, not some formal meeting or wizarding convention.
As he entered Sugarplum's Sweets Shop, he still thought it was a pretty weird place to meet, he searched the room for either one of his siblings. He saw Daniel, his baby brother, looking at the candy. He raised his hand to wave but Daniel wasn't looking in his direction. He walked toward his little brother and felt his childish emotions starting to seep into his mind. This was his little brother, he couldn't just walk up an shake hands. Especially not in a candy store.
He crept around behind, smirking as he did so, and tapped his brother on the shoulder swiftly before ducking around behind a giant shelf of candy. If this worked, Daniel wouldn't have even noticed him and would be freaked out that something invisible just tapped him on the shoulder. If it didn't work... well, Daniel was a good kid overall, he'd just make a joke about it.
