POWER:
Empathy & Emotional Manipulation
Emotions are such easy things to play with, aren't they? It's so easy to twist someone's feelings with just the slightest touch, the quietest word. I go further than that, however, much further. I can directly alter the way the mind processes emotions, effectively tricking the brain into feeling one thing regardless of the stimulus being applied. It simply takes a little bit of concentration, and of course eye contact or physical contact helps tremendously, and I can alter someone's emotional state. I believe it technically works via my body producing a certain set of chemicals that react with another person's brain, thereby altering their state of emotional well being. It does seem to deal more with a person's body chemistry and thought process, so I'm not entirely sure that someone with, say, the ability to block mental powers could handle it or not. Probably would simply be difficult. Oh, and naturally I can sense people's emotions around me, since my ability naturally allows me to understand how people's emotions work.
Limitations
- Limitations are for other people... for the most part.
- Normally I get a read on someone with the empathetic part of my powers before I can really begin altering, which takes some time. Hasty alterations can be difficult to maintain.
- I have to concentrate in order to adjust emotions. A break in my concentration can sometimes mean a half-finished emotion, and that confusion is usually quite detectable. Otherwise it's fairly difficult to think.
- The mind controls all emotions in the end. So if a mind is set on a specific feeling, it can sometimes be hard to alter that feeling.
- Tenacious minds are more difficult to alter emotionally then others.
- The amount of people that I can affect varies depending on their emotional state, willpower, and other factors. In general, I can motivate a small crowd, particularly if they're already in a similar emotion, say, from anger to hatred or sadness to sloth.
- The amount of time my little gifts last also depends on the person and their awareness. I can sometimes alter a person skillfully enough that they don't realize that they've been changed until upwards of hours later, though that's usually because their train of thought has taken them somewhere else. People can change emotions after I alter them, unless we enter some strange battle of wills. I generally win those. On average, the changes only last around fifteen minutes to half an hour, again, depending on intensity or whatnot. It's dreadfully draining to force someone into a murderous rage for more than fifteen minutes, and that will do horrid things to me.
Side-Effects
- Very occasionally my ability can spring back on me, forcing me to experience the emotion I was anticipating.
- When I suffer from mood swings, and it does happen, they are a good deal more... vibrant than the average person.
- Every so often my mood will switch violently.
- Too much emotional alteration can leave me feeling giddy or “high,” and will undoubtedly impair my judgment. It also increases the likelihood of my power snapping back on me.
The lights come on slowly, showing a well dressed, smiling woman of Indian descent. She looks entirely in control of the situation as she smiles at the studio audience. When she waves, it doesn't look like the friendly gesture of someone who's glad to be there: it looks like a queen waving to her subjects. A vivacious, handsome man, also of Indian descent, waves as well before turning to the woman.
RAMISH: What a pleasure it is to finally have you on the show, Ms. Kaur.
PRIYA: I am quite the pleasure to have
Ramish laughs and shakes his head, pointing a finger at Priya. Her smile hardens slightly; she wasn't joking.
RAMISH: Now, we don't normally have guests in positions such as yours on our show, but...
PRIYA: But you simply couldn't resist?
Ramish laughs again; Priya's face twitches.
RAMISH: Something like that. Now, Ms. Kaur, I believe that you are a Director of one of the premier schools in India?
PRIYA: The Ishvaras Development Center, in fact.
RAMISH: Ah, yes, we've heard of it, of course. It's said that all the top students in the country come from there. I've even heard recently that you've been attempting to extend your considerable influence to get your students into important positions throughout the country.
PRIYA: Well, of course, Ramish. After all, I see it as my goal as Director to ensure that my students are given the best possible world post graduation. I may have been born with a silver spoon in my mouth, she turns the smile to the audience, waving graciously but I understand that it's not the same for everyone else. The best thing to do for our country, to help push us forward into modernity, is for students like mine to take control.
RAMISH: That's quite an admirable stance to take.
PRIYA: Well, I do hope that my students will remember the Center after they've graduated, of course.
RAMISH: I've heard that you've already had several who seem to remember you. The rumors about you are almost scandalous. They range from your receiving bribes and illegal funds from several corporations, to even using your power to take several of your alumi into bed---
PRIYA: Why, those are all lies, of course. I would never think to use my influence for such nefarious deeds. The Center has been developed to take specially gifted youth and train them properly. You see Ramish, we take those that have potential regardless of where they are in their own lives, and we give them proper education and training. Like I said: there are occasional... benefits, but nothing nefarious, I assure you.
As for those rumors regarding my affairs, well, they're simply desperate for information about what goes on between my legs. It's the sad difficulty of being beautiful, as I'm sure your wife knows all too well.
Ramish laughs again, several of the audience joining; Priya looks like she wouldn't mind vomiting
RAMISH: Well, she's not quite as beautiful as you. Though I'm sure I'll get in a lot of trouble for saying so tonight. Maybe it's that silver spoon of yours: it's certainly made you quite fetching.
PRIYA: Well, as I tell my students: You should use all the blessings given to you. There's the potential in several of us to become akin to Ishavaras ourselves, though I mean no blasphemy. That is why---
RAMISH: But don't you mean all of us?
Priya's smile turns colder then ever
PRIYA: Sadly, that is the case. Not everyone has the... potential. We have to work with what we're given, after all.
RAMISH: Well, some would call that philosophy rather cold...
PRIYA: They don't usually do it to my face though, Ramish.
There's a hesitation for a moment, with Priya meeting Ramish's eyes. She's smiling, and soon he seems to settle, losing his will to continue and instead looking at his prompter. There's a few moments where he tries to figure something out before continuing.
RAMISH: Right, well, that's not why we called you here. You see, all of the country is in a tizzy over the fact that you're going to be leaving us!
PRIYA: That's right! Though just for a few months, a year at most. I'll be journeying to America to work with a sister school there: Bellefonte Academy. I've heard that they recently went under new management, and I'm quite eager to lend my expertise. After all, I do have a very similar situation to the girls who are taking over: raised among the system with that silver spoon and all.
RAMISH: Though there were rumors that your family used to be poor, until you wer---
Priya gestures sharply, her smile almost growing teeth
PRIYA: Rumors, of course. My family has always been influencial, as everyone knows. And now we're hoping to extend that influence to America.
RAMISH: Well, we're glad to have you! And it's been a pleasure having you on!
PRIYA: It always is.
SAMPLE: The proud Indian woman stepped forward, smiling as she took the podium, almost brushing aside Elsa as she did so. “It's a great pleasure to be staying with all of you,” she said, her accent speaking less of a foreign land and more of culture. She spoke with the same sort of confidence that infected Elsa's tone, and the same arrogance as well. “I've had the great pleasure of guiding our little Development Center for several years now, and I'm quite pleased to be visiting another school again.
“I realize the stress your poor Headmistresses are under, and it is my fervent hope to help alleviate that suffering for them. I come bringing with me all those years of experience and my own talented students. While we may be in competition with one another, my hope is that said competition can be of a friendly nature.
“For you see, things are changing. Our world is shrinking and growing at the same time, and we are sure to experience the pangs that come with such an experience. It's my hope that my Center can help your Academy adjust to those pangs. Together, we can forge a new identity for our kind moving forward, one that can enter the world stage.”
She smiles at the group, extending her will and power. She can't influence everyone, but she doesn't have to. Just a few people in the front catching that excitement should be infectious, especially with her own students trained to respond throughout the crowd. She smiles at them all.
The smile doesn't reach those cold blue eyes.
