Ash can’t create glass from thin air, but give her some sand and she can work wonders. She can’t create something from nothing as the saying goes. Her ability allows her to change the density of glass making it almost bulletproof thick to so thin that merely touching it will cause it to shatter. The thickness of the glass already greatly effects of much time and energy she spend adjusting it’s thickness. She can also shape glass, taking chunks of it and turning it into small crystalline figures.
What comes easiest to her is changing the colour of glass, from simple primary to colours to any other shade she can come up with, this, however, is temporary. Only lasting a few hours at most. She can also shatter glass with her ability, this only happens when she’s concentrating really hard or is incredibly angry. She’s also been able to move glass from point a to point b but not without exhausting herself, it’s an ability she doesn’t tend to use often because it takes a lot of force and mental strain to move it. It’s not as simple as thinking about it and it moves. It’s more of a not only does she have to think about moving the glass, but she must focus every fibre of her being to move that glass from point a to point b. She must block out everything to move the glass and it usually causes a nosebleed before the glass gets to point B and an extreme headache once it’s gotten to point b.
When she uses her ability there’s a tingling sensation in her fingers, like something flowing from her into the glass. When she makes it thicker she exerts more, there’s a stronger tingling, when she takes away density it’s the same feeling except it takes less mental and physical exertion to do. it’s easier to take away than to create. When she breaks glass out of anger she can’t feel the sensation in her fingertips, less of a tingling and more like a painful spark. When forcibly trying to break glass she feels it a lot more, it doesn’t usually leave her with a nosebleed and a headache unless the glass is particularly dense. She won’t attempt to crack bulletproof glass. The last time she did that she had a migraine for about a week.
When she takes away from glass you can find bits of sand left on the surface. She never could figure out why that happened but she always collected it after, added it to her collection. When she made her sculptures, unless she was cutting or blowing or staining the glass without her powers, she’d order small rectangular blocks of semi-thick glass. After it’s time was up it would just turn back into a boring old brick of glass.
Limitations
- Can’t create glass from thin air
- Colour change only lasts 3 hours max
- Density changes can last up to 24 hours but change back to their original density once the time has passed
- Needs to have direct contact with glass to change it’s colour, shape or density.
- Shape changing isn’t permanent, but lasts about 2 days
Side-Effects
- nosebleeds: Happen when she’s at her limit mentally. More likely to happen when she’s making glass thicker, expanding glass, moving it, or trying to force it to shatter
- passing out: This happens when she’s gone past her limit both mentally and physically. her body can’t take anymore and instead of causing any permanent damage it does a sort of shut down. This happens when she pushes past her limits while trying to move glass, increase it’s size/density or trying to shatter denser glass
- headaches - come after she uses her powers too often. Some of them are minor and manageable, ones you get from overworking yourself. others get to the point where moving makes her ill and happen after over exerting herself to the point where her nose bleeds.
- migraines: They come after she pushes herself past the point of nosebleeds and keep going. More often than not she’ll wake up after passing out with one and it’ll last anywhere from a few days to a week.
- has an urge to change glass whenever she see’s it: this may just be the artist in her but she sees glass and she wants to change it’s colour, change it’s shape into something beautiful. She has an urge to make it different than it already is, and sometimes she can resist the urge… other times she can’t help herself.
- physical exhaustion: when you add something to glass it takes something away from yourself. it’s like exercising a muscle. You overexert it and it becomes tired. It starts with a heavy feeling in her arms, moving throughout her entire body, to the point where sitting up and walking became difficult. Becoming immobile is more likely to happen when she’s changing thin glass to bullet proof or taking a small shard of glass and turning it into a giant sword. Anything that involves adding exhausts her, the effects are much more minimal when taking away or shrinking.
APPEARANCE SECTION: Ash may be short, ranking a 5”4, but she is by no means docile. She holds her head up high and her hips always have a confident sway to them whenever she walks into the room. She does compensate her height by wearing high heels and boots that tack on a few extra inches. her eyes are your average blue, and always have a mischievous glint in them, like she’s plotting something and you can’t put your finger on what it is. Her natural hair colour is a pretty chestnut brown but she’s dyed it and bleached it so many times over. Currently it’s a bright blue, but in the past it has been purple, blonde, pink and black with hot pink overtones.
She wears makeup, bright red and pink lipstick, black liquid liner that she likes to wear winged, and she only ever wears concealer when she’s got a nasty zit she wants to hide. Ash tries to eat right, she likes to fit into cute dresses and tight clothes. he keeps her weight at 120 by working out three or four times a week when she has time. She likes to take runs in the morning before work. She has a mole that sits on her face that she is by no means ashamed of. She’s not vain per say, but she takes pride in her looks. She does have scars on her hands, they’re several years old from back when she didn’t have a handle on her ability, back when she was always angry and when she’d put her hands on glass to change it it would just shatter beneath her fingers.
MUST HAVE APPAREL: Some days it’s tight jeans and band tees, others it’s frilly dresses and combat boots. You never know what you’re going to get, but you can bet that Ash will rock it with all she gots. You won’t catch her in flats, she doesn’t enjoy being looked down upon and enjoys the way wearing heels makes her feel. She’s not a hot topic baby but she enjoys alternative fashion from corsets, to chains, to buckles and belts. She keeps things as professional as she can when she teachers but as soon as she’s off the clock she’s in something you wouldn’t catch dead in a classroom. You wont catch her with bare hands, ever. Lace fingerless gloves are her choice of fashion, they hide the faded scars on her hands the best and she prefers to keep them out of sight and out of mind.
PERSONALITY SECTION: Ashlynn is quite a character. She’s changed and grown up drastically since she came to the Academy when she was thirteen years old. The anger she used to harbour with her everywhere she went dissipated, she became more trusting, and she opened up more. Once upon a time she was nothing but a street rat with a chip in her shoulder, but now? She’s a sweet, kind and caring adult who wants to help kids figure out where they’re going with their lives.
She’s terrified of the idea of nothing. Of the idea that there’s no future for her. She used to have that idea so ingrained into her brain that it consumed her. She fears falling back into the mental state of being where things look and feel so hopeless that there’s no point in living. She has a handle on her depression, and she sur as hell doesn’t want to lose her grip.
She’s not a fan of sex or sexual relationships. She never has been. She does enjoy the romantic company of both men and women but as soon as things turn sexual she has a habit of running away with her tail between her legs. She’s never maintained a long term relationship because of this and she feels like she won’t be able to because of it. She does hope to one day find someone who can understand where she coming from and accept her, but for now she’s not focused on that.
Ash believe herself to be an abstract artist. She paints and creates sculptures. Glass has always been her medium of choice for her sculpting but she’s also used metal and wood on her creations. She believes in the expression of self through artwork and you can always see a piece of the artist in their work if you look hard enough. She also plays guitar and writes her own music but it’s not something she’s inclined to share with just anybody.
Ash loves children, and can see herself being a mother one day. Maybe not to kids she’s given birth to but to kids who have had it hard like she did when she was younger. She wants to be a sort of safe place, wanting to one day be a foster mother for kids who weren’t treated well by the system.
EXTRA QUIRK: She only drinks her coffee cold. it’s a weird quirk but it’s something that she’s always done. She’ll make it, leave it on the counter until it’s cold or room temperature and that’s when she’ll drink it. She won’t have it any other way
FATHER: Unknown (Richard Karder)
MOTHER: Unknown (Marissa Brody)
SIBLINGS: None (Several foster siblings over the years)
PET: A mixed breed puppy named Zeus
SIGNIFICANT OTHER: N/A
WORTHY MENTIONS: Bo (Foster kid she ran away with)
Timber (Foster kid she was best friends with)
CHILDHOOD: Ashlynn was given up at birth, she never got to know her real parents. Needless to say they weren’t fit to raise a kid. Her mother was only seventeen when she had Ash and her father was a 40 year old accountant. Marissa dropped Ash off at church steps with her birth certificate and that was the end of that. Her first foster home, that she barely remembers, wasn’t too bad. They kept Ashlynn until they had a child of their own, and her second hope wasn’t as nice. Even though she was just a kid the rules were stricter and the punishments were harsh. After Ash had run away from home three or four times they gave up on her, and she was in and out of homes until eventually she reached one that just didn’t care if she came back or not.
She wound up spending the night at a bus station until the police grabbed her and returned her to her foster home. She wasn’t punished, this family didn’t really care all too much about whether she came or went. They weren’t bad to her, but they weren’t good to her either. Her childhood was a mess, and one she doesn’t look back on with fond memories. She felt like the world owed her something that she wasn’t getting, a family that cared. She’d made some friends over the years, her best friend was this boy named Bo who had the cheekiest smile you’d ever seen. Even when he got in trouble he’d just smile his way through it all. Her other friend went by Timber and she was a sweetheart, always nice and always caring. Bo, Timer and her had shared a group home when they were in between families. Bo’s situation was similar to Ash’s, his parents gave him away at birth. Timber, on the other hand, had been taken away from her parents because they weren’t caring for her. Not the way a kid needed.
The three of them were inseparable and even when things weren’t great at home they always had each other. But when Ash turned eleven, Timber was adopted by this amazing family. Ash was jealous, she and Timber had a huge fight and didn’t talk for a while… and then Timber’s family moved out of state. Ash became angry at herself, and angry Timber for not telling her. But what could she do?
ADOLESCENCE: When she turned thirteen, Bo (fifteen at the time) wanted to run away. He didn’t like being shipped from one place to another and he knew the odds of him getting adopted were slim. He managed to save up some money from the allowances his foster family did give him, not enough but some, and he wanted to run away. He asked Ash to go with him.
There was a time when Bo was out panhandling for cash while Ash hung out in their little hideaway alley. She didn’t think anything would happen, she’d managed to spend a month on the street without getting caught by the cops. She was still naive though, and she dropped her guard. She didn’t hear the footsteps behind her until she was grabbed. Some creepy and smelly guy started dragging her further down the alley, she was shocked and in a panic. Her first reaction was to kick and flail and do anything to get away from him. His grip was too strong, she couldn’t break free. In a last ditch effort she bit down on the hand that was covering his mouth. It distracted him and gave her time to kick again and make him loosen his grip. She ran as fast as she could, but the guy caught up to her, no hand covering her mouth. So she screamed, and like a lightning bolt Bo was there. He punched the guy, grabbed Ash and they both ran as far as they could as fast as they could.
They didn’t talk about what happened. needless to say Ash didn’t drop her guard while she was alone again.
At first she turned him down, but she changed her mind. She decided she’d rather be with someone who cared about her rather than a family that didn’t. And it worked for a while… but then the money ran out and they were squatting in abandoned buildings and stealing food and clothing. She was back to being angry all the time, taking it out on things and Bo.
By fourteen Ash was in a bad place, both physically and mentally. She wasn’t taking care of herself, she was too busy worrying about where they’d find their next meal or next place to sleep, or not getting picked up by the cops. Mentally she was always angry and quick to snap at anyone who dared come close. When she heard sirens she’d always jump, thinking it was the cops coming to pick her up and bring her back to the group home or worse, take her to Juvie. She’d been picked up before, but she always took off as soon as it was safe. All she knew was that anywhere was better than with another foster family.
Her powers manifested one day during an argument with Bo. He was sixteen and a smart ass, two years older than her and he thought he knew everything. He still had a cocky smile and still liked to push Ash’s buttons… but she was already having a bad day and he was just pushing his luck.
The more he pushed her the angrier he got untils he couldn’t look him in the eye. She brought her hand up and went to smash it against the glass. It wasn’t in any way hard enough to break it, but as soon as her skin touched it the glass shattered. She cried out and Bo just looked at her like she grew another head. She was shocked herself, and then she heard the sirens. Apparently their fight had been louder than she thought it was and someone called the cops. Bo got away but Ash was picked up by the cops.
Only the police didn’t take her to Juvie like she thought they would, no, they took her to meet an adult she didn’t know and didn’t trust. She was too tired and too upset to care. It was over for her and she knew it, she’d never see Bo again and she’d already ruined her life. She travelled with the recruiter in a silent fury, not really answering questions she was asked. Ash wouldn’t listen to anything the recruiter had to say either, she found herself turning inward and ignoring everything that happened on her journey to Bellefonte.
When she finally got there, things were explained to her, and some of her fury subsided. Not enough, and the first few years were incredibly rough for her. She went to therapy sessions twice a week for the first three years at the academy. She didn’t make friends until her fourth year when she finally started letting people in. She managed to get a grip on herself and on her abilities. She started believing the school was the best thing that could have ever happened to her, that she was worth more than just a government cheque every month.
She discovered art, music, laughter, sunshine, so many things she missed out on growing up. She never did get her childhood back but she managed to fill the darkness that was growing inside her with something other than anger. She graduated from the Academy after attending it for five years, she always knew in her heart she’d be coming back.
ADULTHOOD: Ash went off to University for Art, it was a three year program in which her medium of choice was sculpting with glass. She had a few significant others but she never really participated in the party scene. She met her at the time girlfriend during a sculpting class. Their relationship was cute, almost child like. Nothing ever went as far as sexual and that’s how Ash liked it. Although the subject of sex was what a majority of their fights were about. There were days where Ash just wanted to call it quits because arguing about intercourse wasn’t worth it.
She enjoyed herself and her art, but when her time was up she went off to teachers college for another two years. She found that she enjoyed being around kids and teens a lot more than she enjoyed her art. Teaching them something new and watching their eyes grow wide with discovery. It’s all she wanted from life. She knew teaching at a regular high school wouldn’t make her happy, so she applied back at the school that had given her the second chance she needed, Bellefonte Academy
She applied to the school to be an art teacher, she had her credentials in order and she had graduated in the top five of her class. She went through the interview process, she knew the drill. She knew how to answer questions and she knew how to work with kids. When she got the job she almost cried she was so happy.
She broke it off with her girlfriend at the time and moved back to the place she spent her adolescent years. She knew it hurt her girlfriend more than it hurt her. Ash had a feeling that their relationship had been over for some time but neither of them really wanted to let go. Her girlfriend didn’t want to move and they had one last argument before it was decided. Breaking up would be best for the both of them.
When she moved back to Kalispell she rented a small one bedroom place. She didn’t need much when it was just her. Being surrounded by the fresh mountain air and knowing she had a good job was more than enough for her. She decided to take it as an opportunity to improve herself as well, going for hikes at least once a week and going for jogs every morning before she had to get ready for work.
She’s been teaching at the academy for the last year. She likes to keep a relaxed environment with her kids, she knows which ones need extra attention and which ones she and just let go. She wants them to discover who they are through art, much like she did. She wants to offer these kids the chance at self discovery, and a therapeutic way to work through their problems if they’re uncomfortable talking to an adult.
SAMPLE: Steady night tonight, not too busy, not too slow, just the way Davin liked it It helped the bar make rent and it helped him provide the liquor and pay his employees. Unfortunately last week he had to fire his last waitress for taking too much off the top. He honestly didn’t give a shit as long as you didn’t get caught, but when he was doing books and there was up to $300 gone? Yeah, no thank you. he kicked her to the curb before she could even start to beg and plead for er job back. he knew he was fair and relaxed, but fuck him if you took advantage of it. Fool me once shame on you and all that he never let people fool him twice.
So today he was training the theifs replacement. He’d let her go one her own for a bit, it technically was her very first day. He didn’t really have a uniform for the bar… just tight clothes if you wanted tips, comfortable clothes if you wanted to enjoy the night, and black shirts just in case they spilled they wouldn’t have to change if they didn’t want to. Practical yes? he thought so. Now he was just waiting, watching, and making mental note. If she was a keeper, he’d have to make sure the bartenders knew that way they wouldn’t be total dickbags. “That’s what you get for hiring family” he thought, although that was just for the bar. He was glad his servers weren’t related to him, it made for interesting post-work plans.
