NAME: Maya Deveraux
NICKNAME: -
AGE: 29 [12th July 1985]
GENDER: Female
ORIENTATION: Bisexual
POSITION: Bookstore Owner
FACE CLAIM: Mylene Jampanoi
POWER:
Power Mimicry/Sensing
Her constant training has provided her with the ability to mimic an ability from sensing where it is coming from and to control how long she uses it. She is also able to detect what the limitations are but she is not immune to the side-effects. This also grants her a basic understanding over what powers she mimics. She can't outright sense them, but over the years, she has learned to tell them apart by learning how the different powers 'feel', though, this does not mean she knows what every single power is, just the ones she's familiar with. She is also capable of copying two abilities if the mutant has it and if they are similar to each other
Limitations
- She can only reach out to ten feet at any given time
- The abilities she mimics will be that of the mutant's limitations. If she copies off someone who has no training, the ability will be erratic in her hand. The opposite goes for when she mimics an experienced and trained mutant, the ability will copy that
- It lasts for a maximum of one hour or until she mimics another power [whichever comes first]
- She is only capable of copying one mutant's ability at any given time. Once she has copied off mutant A, she won't be able to copy from mutant A again. She is still able to copy off mutant A's ability but she will have to find a different mutant.
Side-Effects
- If the power she mimics is active for the whole hour, her body will automatically shut down for hours, sometimes days
- Whatever side effects the mutant mimicked has, she will suffer the same. If a cryokinetic gets dehydrated after two minutes of using their abilities, she will get dehydrated after to minutes of using their abilities
- Mental based abilities especially have a stronger effect on her
APPEARANCE SECTION: Standing at a modest 5'7, she believes that height has nothing to do with commanding attention so she doesn't really wear a lot of heels. Her dark hair is usually styled in wavy curls, let loose to her mid-back. She dresses modestly and for her age, seeing no fashion sense in the younger generation.
She chooses to use minimal amounts of make-up if at all, relying a lot on her eyeliner to make her blue-green eyes pop. Clean-cut as she may seem, she sports two tattoos which is usually hidden under her clothing. One is of her parent's name in calligraphy and the other is a watercolour splash.
MUST HAVE APPAREL: A white gold chain with a tear drop diamond hidden under her tops.
PERSONALITY SECTION: Stealthy is probably the best word to describe her. She doesn't make her presence known unless it was what she wanted. It has caused her family members and friends to propose she wear a bell around her neck. Do not mistake her quiet for ignorance or modesty when the opposite lurks underneath her unblinking gaze.
She is quite manipulative and it is easy to call her callous and unfeeling because she knows exactly how malleable the human psyche is in her hands; just a slight touch, a perfectly executed line and a glance, she could have anything she wanted. Her ability to manipulate people has given her an unshakeable sense of superiority over others, and she expects she could get away with murder, if she tried.
She is also quite promiscuous. She doesn’t quite care who ends up in her bed, it’s all the same in the dark. The concept of commitment is lost on her and the logic behind it is flawed in her opinion. [“A sane person shouldn’t have to remain faithful to one partner and forsake new experiences with other people. It just doesn’t make sense.”]
Her infallible self-worth is only matched by her hatred towards baseline humans. She doesn't understand what superiority they have over mutants where they can just pick a mutant off the street with a snap of a finger with their measly human made weapons.
EXTRA QUIRK: She likes cheese on practically everything she eats. And she's blind.

CHILDHOOD: Maya was born two months premature and blind and for two months she was put under incubation care. Alec and Helena were distraught at their second daughter’s condition but they learned to cope with it. Several doctors were put on call by the conglomerate tycoon and years were spent trying to assimilate Maya into society but it wasn’t without any hiccups.
When she was four, Maya was issued a private tutor, Jackie Potter. The 28 year old med student was hired by Alec after a glowing recommendation by Maya’s doctor. She was under his mentorship when he found out that she had learnt Braille because of her sister who suffered from a disease that caused her permanent eye damage. At first, Jackie had a hard time getting through to Maya but after a few months, four year old Maya warmed up to the med student and they became friends.
Jackie was Maya’s constant companion and despite her crazy schedule, Jackie always had time for Maya. As the blind girl grew up, Jackie taught her everything her sister had to learn to be self-dependant and by the time she was ten, Maya was starting to feel confident with her disability and became self-reliant. By then, Jackie was swamped with school work and her housemanship that she only manages to visit Maya sporadically and to Maya, it was a huge blow to her ego.
The young girl regressed dramatically as she acted out impulsively; ruining Jackie’s reputation in her family’s eyes and also making her lose her scholarship and basically destroying her life. [“If you can’t spare time for me, you won’t have any time for anything else.”] Jackie was forced to leave the country to continue to pursue her career. Maya found that it had been so easy to convince her parents and other people with choice words and the right tone of voice and expression...the only person who noticed Maya's ease in doing so was her sister Josephine.
Josephine loved her little sister and for awhile, she felt helpless that she couldn’t do anything to help her sight impaired sister and Jackie’s ease at handling her little sister made Josephine a little jealous but as soon as Jackie left, Josephine stayed close to Maya, trying to rebuild the confidence that had shattered but with the close contact, Josephine noticed Maya's behaviour and was hesitant in telling her parents about it but when push came to shove, she alerted her parents. It was by twelve years old that Maya started to act even stranger than normal.
ADOLESCENCE: When they would go out to town, Maya would get little shivers and then all of a sudden things would start happening to her. It was different things every time but they were very strange things a twelve year old blind girl couldn't do. Hell, even a seeing twelve year old couldn't do what Maya had been able to do. And it was on her twelfth birthday that a young woman came to visit, unnaturally charismatic, who won even stoic Alaric over. Maya got her little shiver, just like the last few times Josephine had noticed, and this time, whatever Maya said, her parents would just nod and agree with a smile.
Even the young woman seemed to be charmed by Maya as she spoke of the academy up in the mountains that boasted full acceptance of Maya's wonderful ability. The young woman avoided using any negative connotations and because Maya's family was familiar with mutants, they weren’t as scared to let her go. But that could have also been attributed to the fact that she had used her powers to persuade them when the recruiter woman was out of hearing vicinity.
Life in Bellefonte for Maya was interesting. She wasn’t treated as poorly as she thought but she didn’t gain any true friends either. Most of the people she hung out with were wary of her powers and her disability, always second guessing why they were hanging out with her: was it because she had been able to copy off a hypnotist and compelled them to? It became so that Maya resented being around those people and actually started using her powers on them. She did grow softer around them when she found out her sister was expecting and would be married to her high school sweetheart whom the family already loved. Things around Maya seemed to fall perfectly into place except her, it seemed.
ADULTHOOD: She did, however, manage to graduate both her ability training and academics without a hitch, something she could call her own achievement. University life, though, was nowhere near different than Bellefonte except that she could easily use her powers without being caught. With her mutant ability strengthening by the day, Maya’s respect for humanity slowly dissipated. She no longer felt any sort of emotion or connection with the people around her unless she utilised her power. The only time she ever felt anything was when she was around her niece and nephew who seemed to love her as much as she loved them.
Maya moved back to Kalispell after her parents passed on, leaving two family fortunes to be divided amongst the three siblings. Alaric took hold of their father's companies, something he had been bred and trained into, while the estates went to Josephine and her husband. The rest was handed off to Maya who had no use for the money so she bought a book store and started selling popular books in Braille with Josephine as the co-owner. It seemed like finally things were falling into place for Maya. Which is probably why she is now trying to find other ways to spend her wealth.
