POWER INFO: Dexter has the ability to take the potential energy stored in an object and convert it to pure kinetic energy thus “charging” the item with highly explosive results. He prefers to charge smaller objects, they can be charged nearly instantly and they are much easier for him to throw. The power of the resulting explosion is dependent on the mass of the object he is charging, for example, a palm-sized, charged rock strikes with the force roughly equivalent to a .22 round fired from a rifle.
Dexter's power does not alter an item's weight, only the velocity in which an object can be thrown with and he must make direct skin contact with an object for his power to be used. Because of this, Dexter is rarely seen wearing gloves.
With a great deal of effort and concentration he can charge a large object, such as a dresser or wall locker. This would take at least a few minutes would effectively result in a bomb, of sorts. Granted, the instability of such a large amount of kinetic energy would leave little in the way of being able to predict when such an object would explode. Since even the smallest charge requires at least some exertion, the strain of creating a 'bomb' would leave Dexter mentally and physically exhausted to the point of collapse and the possible need of medical attention. While Dexter is proficient in the execution of his power, the more he plays with the forces of kinetic energy without an extended rest, the higher the chances of experiencing a kinetic 'backlash' of sorts which can, and has, resulted in concussion, broken bones, and internal bruising/bleeding.
Dexter can also use his mutant abilities to accelerate an object's kinetic energy instead of converting its potential energy. This can imbue an object with immense destructive force. A drum stick becomes as powerful as a baseball bat a baseball bat hits with the force of a jackhammer.
Due to the kinetic energy constantly flowing through his body, Dexter needs just a couple hours a sleep a night at most but must eat like a horse to sustain himself.
Dexter Sterling was born in San Diego, California to a real estate investor and a lawyer. His childhood was unremarkable and, as many would call, boring. Everything changed at 11 when his powers manifested and sent the family dog to an early grave. The young boy was quickly scooped up and shuttled off to the Academy. After a great deal of training and practice Dexter finally managed to reign in his power to the point where he could handle inanimate objects without gloves for the first time in years. After graduating the Academy Dexter returned to the Golden State by enrolling in the University of California Los Angeles.
Dexter spent two years as a full-time student at UCLA before being accepted into the LAPD Police Academy. His life was dedicated to law enforcement from then on. He quickly moved through the ranks as a beat cop (all the while completing his degree) and finally made detective after just three years. As a member of LAPD homicide, Dexter saw the worst humanity had to offer. It wore on his psyche day after day until he was finally granted a release. At the recommendation of the Bellefonte Academy's officials, he was offered a recently vacated detective position within the Kalispell PD. This position also carried the added responsibility of being the liaison between the Academy and local law enforcement. Tired from chases the dregs of humanity Dexter accepted the transfer and returned to small town life.
First and foremost Dexter Sterling is a fiercely loyal individual. His nature as a protector and passion as a law enforcement officer have resulted in a doggedly determined defender of those he holds dear. As so, it's almost lucky there are few Dexter truly lets inside. He's a well known fixture both at the Academy where he lends his time when needed and in the town of Kalispell where he proudly serves as one of but a handful of detectives. His service record indicates he has a rogue's streak in him that manifests itself in an almost maniacal drive to succeed. Since leaving Los Angeles, however, it seems as though the much quieter city has calmed him considerably. Nonetheless, he takes his role as a civil protector seriously.
Off duty Dexter is known as a friendly and charming man. Somewhere along the way he gained a love for classic muscle cars, which has disturbed his neighbors somewhat due to his erratic work schedule. Dexter is a man of many acquaintances but few friends. He's long lost touch with his parents, although he rarely speaks of them. Having seen his share of tragic love affairs and hot dates, Dexter opts to live alone in a modest suburban home with his three cats, Boss, Hemi, and Baby (don't ask).
