Better Dig Two

[Beau LaRoux]

Beau frowned as someone placed a note in his hand, insisting that he give it to that girl over there. He twisted to look back, seeing a girl that he thought he dimly recognized. Beau did try and meet as many of the fine females of Bellefonte as he could, mostly because of his longstanding flirtatious history. He'd mostly landed on one in particular of late, but that hadn't stopped him from befriending more. Still, he didn't quite recognize this one, and he definitely hadn't recognized the person giving the note. Beau had barely heard them issue their little order: they'd been in movement and he'd twisted to look at the recipient, not the person actually giving the note. By the time he twisted back around, the person was a retreating back.

"Well, maybe it's jus' somethin'---" muttered Beau, unfolding the note and looking at it. His eyes widened as he scanned down the words, eventually whistling. Someone definitely did not like this girl, or at least had done something to tick off the girl. Beau licked his lips as he folded the note up again. It was probably best if he actually delivered it though: the girl deserved to know.

So Beau stood up, walked over to where the girl had been, and coughed into his fist. As soon as he had the girl's notice, he tried a friendly smile. "Hey, uh, name's Beau, an' someone jus' told me ta give ya this," he extended the note. "It's pretty mean though, so you might wanna, uh, make sure you're ready to read it."

Yeah, that didn't sound creepy at all, nope.

Casey had found a spot in the lounge that wasn't horribly crowded. She sat on the bench, folded her feet under her and laid her head back against the wall. Maybe if she was lucky she could catch a nap...Buuuut of course she wasn't lucky. The noise level wasn't horrible but it was annoying enough to keep her up. Not to mention that another student hadn't been paying attention and had actually started to sit on her until she yelped and pushed the girl away. There was some laughing as the girl and her friends moved away. "No harm, no foul,"  "she murmured under her breath, while shooting a glare at the retreating figure.

She'd managed to push back her rising annoyance and anger levels until she was interrupted yet again. The cough was close enough that she guessed it was for her. His smile curbed her anger for the moment as he introduced himself but the tired smile she'd plastered on her face slowly slipped away as his words  reached her and he handed the note over to her. She looked dumbfounded as she took the note, lightly grasping it between her fingers. Hurt and confusion flashed over her face. That lasted for just a few seconds before she snapped, so to say, and the annoyance and anger took over, fueled by hurt feelings and the crankiness that comes from not getting enough sleep. She stood up, glancing over Beau's shoulder, the note getting crushed in Casey's now clenched hand. "Who was it?! Why the hell didn't they just give it to me themselves?" Casey's narrowed, glaring eyes locked onto Beau's, "Maybe its planned. You all just got together and thought it'd be a great idea to pick on some one because it'd be awesome to see watch it all unfold." Casey finished angrily, her cheeks flushed her breathing faster from the anger. The shine of tears in Casey's eyes was the only non angered response.

Beau felt his fingers just barely grace the girl's when he handed over the note, along with the little tell-tale tingle that meant that he'd just picked up the best version of whatever power she had. To his delight, he didn't immediately begin shooting fire from his fingers or anything too major. Unfortunately for poor Beau, his relief didn't last very long. The girl moved quick, causing Beau to take a step back, his hands going up in surrender. He glanced over his shoulder when she looked, then shrugged.

"I dunno why they didn't give it themselves. Maybe they were scared?" offered Beau. He really didn't know what the hell was happening here. Casey didn't look like the perkiest flower in the bouquet, but she was a darn sight more normal looking than some of the people around here. There were no skunk parts nor any weird clothing. Beau even thought she looked pretty, if in a sort of tired, washed out kind of way.

"Now jus' wait a second, I ain't one to pick on nobody. I figured that whoever sent you that note don't care for you much," he pointed at the crumpled up paper, nodding, "an' that you deserved to know. I was jus' over there,' he jerked his thumb toward his original location, "mindin' my business an' workin' on some homework," yeah, this was a dumb place to do that, but Beau liked having distractions available just in case. "So jus' calm down a bit," he gestured, and then nodded at the note. "You recognize the handwritin' or anythin'? Might be you stirred someone up or someone's been goin' for ya for a while now?"

And Beau was already regretting getting up; he thought he could see tears glistening in the girl's eyes, and there was nothing a Southern male hated more than seeing a pretty girl cry.

As Beau spoke Casey tried to calm down. She was successful for the most part. The only sign of her anger was her flushed cheeks now. "I'm sorry, its been a rough morning," she said apologetically. She looked down at her clenched hand, the edges of the paper sticking through her fingers. With a frown and slightly shaky hands she opened up the note with a mumbled, "I don't think I've been here long enough to make any enemies."

Her eyes narrowed as she read it. There wasn't really any hurt in Casey anymore. Just anger. Anger that had Casey lighting up like a firefly. She knew if she didn't keep calm she'd probably end up blasting someone or something. "No," she answered tersely, "I don't recognize the handwriting. Sounds like a jealous bitch though." Casey rolled her eyes. She didn't even really know how to deal with the situation. If she knew who it was from she'd confront them, obviously she didn't' though. She crumpled up the paper and narrowed her eyes. "You wouldn't happen to be able to like, burn this or anything, could you?" she asked with a half-smile. The anger had woken her up a bit at least and she was able to appreciate the cute guy in front of her.

Beau returned the smile with a little nod. He understood how rough mornings could be sometime, and there were sometimes people with abilities that made them rougher still. He wasn't sure that Casey qualified as one, but he felt a little more sluggish in her presence. Beau was, thankfully, getting more and more used to dealing with feeling all sorts of weird sensations around other people though; just sort of came with the power, he guessed.

Hadn't been here long enough to make any immediate enemies, nor recognized the handwriting. Beau would've admitted that he was stumped if he had the chance. The girl was already pointing out that the handwriting could've been to a "jealous bitch" and there were times when Beau had experienced that upclose and personal. "Don't suppose you've been flirtin' with anyone?" he asked, trying to sound casual about it. "Sometimes people get mad 'bout stupid stuff like that."

He would've suggested that it was because she was pretty and she did have a sort of pale, Gothic quality to her that Beau supposed some people would've liked. It definitely wasn't his type, but he didn't expect every girl to be blonde and vivacious; be damn boring if they were.

"'fraid I can't burn nothin' less you can," he said, holding up his hands. "Know a girl or two who probly could, but they ain't 'round right now," Beau then padded his pockets, eventually shrugging, "ain't got a lighter on me either. So unless you fancy rubbin' a guitar pick 'cross it fast enough to catch sparks, I'm thinkin' yer outta luck."

"Fliriting, hmm, its possible. Depends on the time really. But its definitely possible," Casey replied. Of course she didn't say out loud that while it was possible, it wasn't likely seeing as how the last person she remembered flirting with was Devyn and that wasn't like 'serious, I-so-have-a-crush-on-you' type of flirting. Plus it was late and she didn't remember seeing or hearing anyone else out. 


Upon hearing that he couldn't burn anything Casey sighed. "No, its okay, I'll take care of it later," she mumbled, stuffing the note in a pocket. She stood there awkwardly for a second, not sure what to do now that her emotions were fading and the note wasn't giving any handy answers. So she picked at the last thing he said. "So guitar pick, huh?? Does that mean you play?"

If the girl couldn't remember flirting with anyone enough to get their ire, then Beau was betting she hadn't done it. In his experience, you usually knew whenever you managed to tick someone off via flirting. true, there were times when you accidentally said the wrong thing to the wrong person, but Beau just really didn't see that being a possibility here. The girl just didn't strike him as being the type of person to do something like that.

Beau watched as the girl sighed and stuffed the note into her pocket. He was tempted to ask, to try and pry for a bit, his mouth even opening a few times. He eventually rubbed at the back of his head, figuring that if she wanted his help or if she wanted support, she'd ask for it. There were a few awkward beats there, with Beau shuffling and wondering if he should just push into her privacy and outright ask.

"What? Oh, yeah, I play," he said, digging into his pocket to produce the pick. "Play guitar an' a few other instruments. Been doin' it for a bit," he shrugged, twirling the pick a bit between his fingers, "an' I'd like to think I'm pretty good at it. mostly country though," he smiled bashfully at her, obviously not expecting her to be a fan. Wouldn't be the first time he was surprised by something though, that was for sure.

"That's awesome. My mom had me try a few instruments when I was younger but I didn't like any them. If I remember right I think it was the piano and violin. I just think I didn't have the patience back then. If I could play an instrument, I'm not sure country would be my first choice though. I don't hate country but its not my favorite either. If I can't find anything else to listen to then I'll settle for it," Casey replied, with a shrug at the end. 

Even though she was trying not to dwell on the note, phrases kept slithering through her mind. 'You're worthless. NO ONE wants you around here...' A sad sigh escaped Casey's lips. She didn't have low self esteem and she knew that what was written wasn't true but she couldn't stop the hurt that was flowing through. It was a heavy cold feeling. Looking down at her feet Casey asked, "What do you think I should do about the no..note?"

Beau chuckled as Casey admitted to not necessarily being a country fan. He got that a lot, and he just wound up shaking his head. "Jus' wait till you hear me play, might change your mind," though that wasn't the usual result. No, usually what happened was that people would hear Beau play, then conclude that they might not like most country, but they definitely liked him. Beau generally wasn't thrilled at being singled out like that, but he was willing to take the compliment for what it was.

He'd been thinking about outright inviting Casey to one of his shows (wouldn't be the first time) when he noticed that her mood seemed to darken. He fell silent, watching carefully as things worked across her face, ready to support her if it came to it. He reckoned that he already knew what it was about though, and when Casey opened her mouth to speak, she only confirmed his suspicions.

"Well, if you don't know the person who sent it, then I reckon you jus' ignore 'em," he said, shrugging. "People are always gonna hate you an' all, but it's usually better jus' to turn the other cheek an' all. Pretty sure that's what the Bible says, and it's usually right 'bout that sort of thing." Beau paused for a moment, pursing his lips and moving them a bit. "Though if you were really worried, you could always try huntin' them down. I'm sorry I didn't get a good look at 'em, but maybe somebody could pluck it outta my head or I could find someone with perfect recall or somethin'," he shrugged. He'd do if she needed him to, but he definitely wasn't looking forward to stalking someone like this. It sounded... almost creepy, really. Still, definitely her choice, not his.
