Theodore "Theo" Hunter
FACE CLAIM: Tom Burke
[/div]♦ THE BASICS ♦
AGE: 25
GENDER: Male
ORIENTATION: Heterosexual
POSITION: Bellefonte College Student♦ THE ABILITY ♦
POWER: Motivational telepathy
Theo has a limited form of telepathy - he can't read specific thoughts, but he can read motivations from people. In short, he is a human lie detector: He can tell exactly when someone is telling the truth, a half-truth, or an outright lie; he can also tell when someone is sugarcoating a truth, or spinning in in any way. He senses motivations through a form of synesthesia - lies "taste" bitter, sugarcoating is sickeningly sweet, the truth is neutral in taste, and everything else ranges in-between.
LIMITATIONS:
Telepathy is based on the person's own belief. If someone believes they are telling the truth, Theo will register whatever they say as truth.
Theo is affected by his own powers: He literally cannot lie. This does not mean that he is compelled to radical honesty - he can always just shut up and say nothing. But when he does decide to speak, he can only say exactly what he thinks, without sugarcoating it. This makes Theo come off as rude, more often than not. Especially because he never perfected the art of when to shut up.
SIDE-EFFECTS:
Other than a whole lot of social awkwardness and conflict, the largest drawback of Theo's powers is the taste. He can't help but get sudden tastes of various kinds as people talk around him. In severe cases, they can make him nauseous.♦ THE CHARACTER ♦
HEIGHT: 6'
HAIR COLOR: Lighter brown
EYE COLOR: Dark brown
MISC: Theo usually lets his hair and beard grow out, out of sheer laziness. The beard is kept to a reasonable size for practical reasons, but he is not known to care much about keeping his hair in check. He usually gets around to cutting it when it gets long enough to form a ponytail. Sometimes he forgets.
PERSONALITY: Theo is a textbook case of the Lazy Genius. He had always been the smart kid who never bothered to "apply himself." He is generally chill to the point of barely having a blood pressure - and most of that comes from his utter disregard for social niceties. He is not a bad person, he just lacks filters, and is comfortable in knowing that whoever likes him likes him, and whoever doesn't is not worth the time anyway. There are a precious few people he likes, but the ones he considers friends he is fairly loyal to.
Theo generally has a "whatever" attitude towards life. He is a very smart person, and yet he is still in college, despite his age, mostly because he either pissed teachers off enough to fail their class, or because he didn't bother to show up at all. He only stays in college at his parents' request, since he believes that whatever they can teach him, he could also learn on his own. Whenever he felt like it. There is no rush.
SECRET(S): While he is generally unbothered by people's drama, tasting lies bothers Theo more than he lets on, especially if someone lies to him without knowing that he can tell.♦ THE HISTORY ♦
FATHER: Steven Hunter
MOTHER: Eleanor Hunter
SIBLINGS: None
WORTHY MENTIONS: Related to Cash and Elliot Hunter (cousins), and all the other Hunters.
CHILDHOOD: Theo is the only child of a comfortable wealthy family. His father, like his siblings, is a mutant, so the parents suspected from an early age that Theo might be too, but they had to wait a long time for his powers to manifest. Theo spent most of his childhood on the West Coast, where his father was running a small publishing company.
He got tagged as a "problem child" in elementary school, not because he was rowdy or uncontrollable, but because he generally seemed bored all the time. What the teachers didn't realize, however, was that this did not come from a lack of motivation, as much as from the fact that Theo learned to read early, and was way ahead of his class in most subjects he cared about. The ones he didn't, no one had the power to force him to deal with them.
ADOLESCENCE: Theo manifested fairly late (at the age of 17). It was not obvious at first, since he had always been a blunt kid, and an ever blunter teenager - it took himself some time to figure out that the strange tastes did not come from the junk food he ate, or some kind of a brain tumor, but were actually a part of his new powers. This fascinated him for a while, and he experimented with his newfound ability quite a lot, tracing its limitations and its possibilities. His father sent him straight to Bellefonte as soon as he found out, and for the first time in his life, Theo was among mutants his own age.
High school continued to be a pain. Theo's grades reflected both his exceptional memory, and his unwillingness to complete assignments. Some teachers recognized that he was smart, while others only saw him as the guy who dozed off in most classes. Still, Theo managed to meander his way through high school, and get into college, eventually. He took a year off between high school and college, but soon found that real life adulthood and a regulated work schedule were not what he had been looking for, and to his parents' relief, went to college after all.
ADULTHOOD: Theo is now a college student, and has been for the past 5 years. He has taken a large number of classes, but has yet to declare a major, and is only still in college because his parents want him to (and pay for it). He spends most of his time hanging around the Bellefonte Academy. He is aware that his powers would be much thought after in a number of fields - but he is not sure he wants to go that way, or even that he wants a regular job. He is not very concerned with time.♦ THE PLAYER ♦
