James, Matthew, Ellen

POWER INFO:
James is a steel elemental. His powers and abilities all revolve around the use of steel to enhance his physical body and other non-biological objects with its properties. The entirety of his power can be put into two sub-powers:
Self Transformation
James has the ability to completely turn into steel (This transformation takes roughly ten seconds. During this time he is vulnerable to attack, just like any normal person.) While in this form every part of him is temporarily made of metal. For this, James must first make contact with something made from steel and then use his mind to make it “seep inwards” (Sometimes if James is very angry or scared and he is touching something made of steel then he will change automatically).
James then becomes entirely made of steel, his internal organs and muscles harden and his usual bodily functions cease. (Meaning he no longer breathes or bleeds.). This also means that it makes him much heavier. While In this form he weighs roughly half a tonne and can lift roughly his own body weight without much strain. At a push he could flip, but not lift 1 tonne – this is about the weight of a small car. (This isn’t due to superhuman strength, but rather him having strength equivalent to his weight, or he couldn’t even move himself.) To change back from his Full metal form, James must make contact with biological material, preferably that of a human.
Although this makes James incredibly physically imposing and destructive, it is also a double edged sword. The fact that his bodily functions stop quickly takes its toll on James’ body. The effects aren’t as fast as they would be if they were happening to a normal person, but they still have a profound effect on his physical condition.
As James turns his entire body to steel he will go under certain changes, one of which is the drop in body temperature. If he spends too long in this form when he changes back he will be incredibly cold and could even have to be hospitalized.
Also his body is no longer getting any oxygen; not having to breathe has its advantages but it also it means he cannot stay in steel form for too long. This form prolongs the amount of time he can go without breathing by a large amount but does not make him immune. If he spends too long in full metal form he will become fatigued after a short time. This will get worse the longer he stays as he is. He will begin to see in double vision and get dizzy until he passes out. When James has passed out he no longer has the ability to actively touch someone and change himself back to flesh, if someone touches him while he is unconscious the change will happen automatically, However if he is left he will eventually enter a coma.
Any damage James sustains while in this form will be translated onto his usual self after reverting. For example, If James were to receive a deep cut/scratch while in full metal form, he would be unhindered until he reverted to a usual human, at this point he would begin to feel pain from the wound and start suffering side effects like bleeding etc. Things like heavy hits or small dents would translate to heavy bruising or gouges.
Effects over time:
• James may remain in this form with no drawbacks for about 30 minutes
• At about 40 minutes James will begin to suffer from crippling fatigue, stopping him from being able to do much but stumble around and take hits.
• At 45 minutes James will begin to see in double vision, feel dizzy and be unable to stand up.
• After 50 minutes James will fall to the floor, exhausted. His physical condition will stay that way unless someone touches him and brings him back into his normal state, if they do change him back he would be shivering from extreme cold and exhausted to the point where he cannot move unaided.
• If James gets no help after passing out for ten minutes he will eventually enter a comatose state as his body gives up on him completely. (Total time of 60 minutes) James may not wake up from this state for as long as a week.
Strengths:
• James becomes hard to damage or stop.
• James no longer has to breathe, meaning gases and poisons will have no effect on him. He can also go underwater for longer than he can hold his breath usually.
• James becomes considerably stronger, allowing him to restrain people easier
• James doesn’t have to react to injuries, due to a lack of pain.
• James is mostly immune to heat, except for temperatures exceeding 1,000°F, which is the point at which steel becomes soft. It has a melting point of 2500°F.
• It makes protecting people easier because he doesn’t have to worry about his own wellbeing.
Weaknesses:
• Time limits; Although James can be in the form for 40 minutes without any lasting side effects, his ability to actually do anything while in this form is limited to 30 minutes. Because of this, people who know the abilities limitation can easily avoid him for 30 minutes. After this time they have practically won the fight.
• There is a 0% chance that James could even attempt swimming in this form.
• It can be activated unconsciously if James is in danger or very angry when touching steel.
• If James sustains heavy damage, the act of reverting could be an incredibly painful experience – meaning he would only use it in times of great need.
• In a one and one confrontation, if James were to hit the 30 minute mark, people could literally leave him for dead.
• This form would have a high weakness to extreme drops in temperature, which would make his body brittle and very easy to crack. Frozen body parts would also be rendered immobile.
Object Transformation
James has the ability to turn non-biological inanimate objects into steel. To do this James must first make contact with a steel object as a focus. Then if he touches something which isn’t made of steel he can channel the properties of the steel object through his body into the non-steel object. This changes its molecular structure and turns it into steel. Unlike his metal transformation this requires concentration (Except in situations where he has a lapse in control and accidentally turns his chair into steel.) and uses energy, leaving him mentally and physically exhausted. It is also difficult and James can’t always get it to work. He can use it two or three times a day, any more than that will leave him unconscious.
Strengths:
• James can reinforce things which are usually weak and easy to break.
• James can make weapons or armour in a pinch.
• It can have great comedic value.
Weaknesses:
• It uses energy and can debilitate James if used extensively.
• It requires concentration 99% of the time.
• The change is irreversible.
• Lack of control; James still find it difficult to do and sometimes he botches and it just doesn’t work full stop.

GENERAL APPEARANCE:
James is an average looking guy; his hair is dark brown and of average length, it is shaggy and usually unkempt as he never brushes it. His eyes are pale blue and his skin tone is a healthy tanned colour, as you would expect someone who spends all his time in the suns to have. James stands at an average height of 5’8”. His physique is athletic and lean with the toned muscles people normally
James usually wears casual clothes unless the occasion calls for smart dress. Shorts and T-shirts are what James feels most comfortable in, mainly in bright colours like yellow and white. However all of his clothes are plain. Fashion sense you say? What fashion sense?
MUST HAVE APPAREL:
James always carries a watch made from steel. This helps with his power but he wears it mostly for its sentimental value. Considering it is the only thing he has to remind him that he used to have a father.
PERSONALITY:
James is quiet, he doesn’t really like sport but he has always kept himself fit with daily exercise. He is quite socially awkward when he first meets people, mainly around girls. After a little while he warms up to people and comes out of his shell. Most of the time he is generally quite easy to get along with, but that’s mostly with people he knows well. With strangers James is quiet and doesn’t say much, to start with he stutters and blushes a lot until he gets to know them.
When James is around people he feels comfortable with he has a happy-go-lucky demeanor and undying positive outlook on life. Despite his behavior and seemingly impervious positivity James is really quite insecure and always worries about what others think about him. He has always found it hard to make friends and spends most of his time alone reading, exercising or playing Computer games. Because of his difficulty making friends he feels extremely endeared to people who openly express him as such, he feels a strong loyalty and desire to protect people he cares for and in situations where they need his help he will be there, without a seconds thought.
James is a good person, he sticks to the usual human moral guidelines, however in situations which may risk his or his friend’s lives he can quite easily drop all of his moral guidelines and result to drastic measures if required. He thinks killing is wrong and it can never be forgiven, however if it is to save his or a friends life, so be it. He can live with the guilt if needed.
EXTRA QUIRK:
Gaming addiction and the ability to say very stupid thoughts out loud without realising it.

HISTORY:
James grew up in Nottingham, West Bridgford with his mother Lilly. His father had died when he was young and his mother had had many boyfriends but never re-married. James and his mother lived in reasonable comfort and his mother, who was an interior designer, was reasonably well off.
He went to a normal, boring secondary school and lived out his uneventful and boring life. He only made his first friend at 13, but even then, they weren’t real friends. James spent most days going to school, going to the gym, playing computer games and sleeping.
When James was at the age of fourteen his mother had a particularly stormy break up with one of her boyfriends. She got so upset that she decided they needed to leave and go to another country. James was fine with that, he had no strong connections to his hometown and he was feeling, as ever, positive about the possibilities moving to a new country would bring.
Naturally his mother chose America, New York where on the 10th of May 2011 they got on a plane and moved there. At first it was fine; his mother got another job as an interior designer and they lived in a two bedroomed house which was considerably smaller that their last one.
The worst thing about this new house were the lights, the lights in the house would always go out every week. James spent more nights than he could remember, clutching onto hurting limbs and stubbed toes. The lack of light in the house meant he was always tripping and hurting himself.
James’s uneventful life was so unbelievably uneventful that, he has come to believe, all the little events that could have happened but didn’t all molded together to make one big event which would change his life forever.
On James’s 16th birthday or birth night the light bulb in his room had blown, shrouding him in the darkness that always brought promises of sprained ankles and stubbed toes.
He had climbed out of his bed, in nothing but boxers, to go to the toilet. For some reason he thought he was back in his old house. Because of this he ended up taking a wrong turn and stumbling onto the staircase. He only just realised in time to catch the steel banister to stay upright but his legs had already fallen under him.
James felt a strange sensation in his arm as he lost his grip and tumbled, head over heels down the stairs. He knew that falling down stairs could cause serious injury and was surprised to find he felt little pain as his back, neck and head took a thrashing.
He also noted in the back of his head that there was an odd metallic clanking noise as he fell. When he finally reached the bottom he got up, abashed as he looked down at his skin, which was an odd metallic grey colour.
Worried, James moved towards the light switch and realised as he moved that his body felt heavier than usual, not uncomfortably so but there was a definite difference.
When the light was on, all was revealed. His skin was a dull shiny grey, the same colour as the bannister. James had no Idea how to react. What had happened? How was this possible?
His heart began to beat loudly and quickly as fear crawled up his spine. The fear overwhelmed him and he blacked out unceremoniously in a large metallic heap with a comedic “clunk”.
James must have woken up his mum, because he came round an hour or so later sitting in the corner of the living room. With his mum on the other side, staring at him. The stare she had for him was not one that a mother should ever use on her son; it was vacant, unrecognized and hostile.
What happened next was a blur, it seemed unreal and the memory is still hazy, maybe from the after effects of blacking out. He remembered the police coming, asking questions, not in a harsh way, more in a sympathetic way. Had his mother called the police on him? Had he really scared her that much?
He had seen the look his mother had given him, he knew. No matter how much he wanted to believe otherwise that his mother would kick him out and have nothing to do with him again. It surprised James, really, he was thinking pessimistically. It seemed that his positivity could be broken but then again, there was no good in this situation.
James had been right. Within three months James was being shipped off to a new school for people with powers. He should have been happy about it, but all he could feel was the bitter taste of rejection.
When James got to The Bellefonte Academy he wasn’t happy. Not one bit. His usual positive personality had been broken and he didn’t do much but eat, do school work, sleep, repeat. That changed when he made friends with a girl called Serena. It had been awkward at first but the friendship had boosted his spirits greatly. Serena managed to cheer him up and bring him back to his normal self.
Since then he has been making progress with his control. Unlike before he can sometimes hold off a transformation if he is angry, but even then it’s difficult. James is dealing with it, but deep down all he wants is to be a normal guy, living a normal life.
SAMPLE:
It was pretty late and starting to get dark, James knew he should have headed back to the School by now but he had found the perfect place for the exercise he had in mind. It was a large Multistory car park which was just what he had imagined. The floors would do well for different heights and the cars inside provided plenty of steel to get him started.
He circled the construction looking for a side to test himself on which wouldn't attract attention...and bingo! The back of the car park overlooked an alley way which was reasonably wide. Grinning James walked over to a large 4x4 and stuck his hand on the door. As usual the change came with an unnatural feeling of being dipped into cold water and the sensation sent violent shivers down his spine until it was finished.
James had never been particularly interested in his mutation, until he had seen someone getting beaten up in an alley. Trying to help him had earned James a rather large implement through his shoulder. Painful, but a good wake up call. It had made him realize that the strength of his steel must be tested so that he would have a feel of what it was capable of later down the line.
When he got to the edge of the first floor he noticed how high it was. James could probably have made that safely with human skin but he still wouldn't have risked it. Looking down James was tempted to turn around and leave, this was a stupid idea! What am I thinking? But still he had to try it. If he walked away the chances were he wouldn't have the guts to test his limitations in the future.
Before he had the chance to chicken out he hurled himself over the edge. The ground rushed to meet him and he landed with an incredibly loud clunk. James stood, shaking, waiting for the pain to come but it didn't. The metal had completely soaked all of the force, leaving him unharmed.
Laughing with relief James ran back up, tried the second floor...no pain, just a slight jolt up his legs. The third floor...again no pain. Then the fourth, he stood over the edge. The fall would last a good four seconds and he wasn't in any way sure that his was a good idea but before he could doubt himself he jumped. Yelling with a mix of fear and excitement as the ground rushed to meet him.
