She didn't catch the discomfort her gaze had caused in the big man but she turned back to him when he started talking plans. When he teased her about her internal climate, she gave him a sharp look, complete with a raised eyebrow. "Don't sass me." She rolled her eyes and ate her chip at him.
The mention of sushi brought a disgusted look on her face. "I am not about to spend money on food that isn't cooked." She shook her head and ate more chips for emphasis. "I'll...try and brave the sun. I'll just have to wear as little clothes as possible. Which would in turn make me shine brighter than the sun so..." she shrugged and licked her salty fingers thoughtfully. "Do they sell sun hats at the airport? I might need ten. Oh shoot, and sunscreen. I packed one but it's not going to be enough."

Corey smirked, knowing damn well it wouldn't be the last time either of them would sass the other. He enjoyed the almost playful little moments that seemed to follow Reid when the two of them were together. Being with her caused Corey to settle into a certain sense of normalcy, something he'd never had before even as a child growing up in South Florida. It was comforting, to say the least.
"Wait." The big man's brow furrowed and he lifted a hand for emphasis. "Are you telling me you've never had sushi?" Although given Reid had always lived inland, far away from either of the US's famous coasts he should have realized this. "Oh, no." His head shook. "That won't do." He pointed a finger at Reid. "You're trying it. I bet you'll love it."
When Reid began her talk of the sun and how best to deal with it Corey fell silent and let her go on. He held the smirk on his lips as he watched her talk, a faint gleam in his dark eyes as she touched on the perils of being as pale as she was and being in a Mediterranean climate. When she finally finished with a question, Corey shrugged. "Don't know. But you shouldn't buy anything in the airport unless you have to." He pointed out. "I bet you'll find one from a street vendor for half the price."
Reid and her idle threats were famous, only when it came to Corey. There were a lot of things she swore she would never do, and yet end up doing with Corey. And there were things she swore she would do but never did, because of Corey. It was a strange feeling, being under someone's thumb and actually not minding it. Not that Corey was controlling, far from it.
Looking down at his hand, she raised an eyebrow and looked up at his face, her nose scrunching up a little. After a moment of consideration, she narrowed her eyes accusingly at Corey and sighed. "Well, I should always try things once."
She continued pointing out the bad things of being under the sun because of her skin. "I'm gonna look like cooked shrimp, Core. You're gonna sleep with a jumbo cooked shrimp."
When Corey mentioned street vendors, Reid's eyebrows furrowed in the middle. "Is it like...those vendors you see in the movies? You know, with the bikini babes on skates and stuff?"

Corey gave a bit of a victorious smile when Reid relented without putting up much of a fight. He figured her agreeing to try a new type of culinary delight would probably only last until it was time to actually partake. Saying she was alright with trying new things and being faced with a plate of raw fish and other seafood were two completely different things. Regardless it would be a new experience and it didn't matter how small it may have been, Corey was glad he was going to be there with her.
"It's not going to be that bad." He said, waving a hand dismissively. "You've never been to the West Coast? Or anywhere that's known for being sunny?" The big man chuckled. "I know you grew up in the mountains with the rest of the lizard folk but come on."
"Well it's..." Corey paused a moment as he went to think about his answer. The movies always depicted places as either being far worse or far better than reality. Which side San Diego usually got was an uncertainty. "It's like that." He finally said with a nod. "Not quite as many supermodels walking around as the movies would lead you to believe but when it's eighty degrees in the middle of winter you know you're onto something."
And Corey was absolutely right. She would probably even waffle a bit when it was time to eat the food. She loved food, she really did. It gave her a sense of joy. But only when it's cooked. The thought of putting something that just got off the ice was a little too unappealing for her.
"Dude, I've never been to any coast. I went from mountain to mountain. My life has been - hey! I am not cold blooded!" She laughed, punching Corey playfully. "I've never traveled outside of Montana or Colorado." She shrugged.
She chewed on her lower lip, trying to remember just what about San Diego she knew, judging from everything she's seen on TV. "Is San Diego the one with the steep slopes and rolling mist? Or the one with those old Mexican style houses? Or am I...way off base?"

Corey couldn't help the sly smirk from spreading across his face as Reid caught his little quip. He lifted an arm to shield himself Reid's swing, batting her hand away as if she was nothing more than a kitten swiping a paw at him. "Ask some of the officers under you that." He replied laughing.
The laughter turned into curiosity as Reid inquired about the city in which they were headed. Corey looked at her for a moment in silence before he couldn't help but laugh again. His head shook and he waved a hand. "Mexican style buildings." He answered before bringing the plastic cup he held up to his lips and finished off the remainder of its contents. "You're thinking of San Francisco." He corrected. "That's where the hills and fog are."
"What are you talking about, they love me." She said dryly, rolling her eyes though in amusement. So she was a little stern when it came to her underlings but it wasn't like she had a choice. She had to work twice as hard because she was a woman and a mutant, two classes of people who aren't supposed to be on the force, according to a colleague of hers.
Corey laughing at her made her punch him again. "At least I got half of that right. Anyway, you're the expert, I'm guessing. Be my tour guide." She shrugged. "I'm gonna be in a sun hat, with sunscreen all over my body and you can just point out significant landmarks." She nodded as she leaned against him. She was already getting a little sleepy.

Corey had been a leader much as Reid was now and he was well aware of the simple fact that it was impossible to remain friends with subordinates. Sure, one could spend time with them outside of work and even get close but that separation had to remain. It was difficult enough to lead people in the face of danger without having the mess of personal emotion complicating matters. Sometimes you had to be the bad guy and that wreaked havoc on friendships. "I'm sure." He replied with a chuckle. "For the sake of this illusion, and because I don't want to use foul language in public I'll refrain from repeating some of the names I've heard the other officers have for you."
"That's the plan." He said with a nod. He'd never given much thought to what they were going to do with their time after the wedding. They'd opted to make a mini-vacation out of the trip and stay a few days longer than needed. It suddenly occurred to him the locations he was most familiar with weren't the type one would typically bring his significant other to. He'd have to get some time in on Google before the trip went on too long to remedy that. "You'll be fine. It's winter. It's only seventy out and there might be some cloud cover."
Reid snorted and shook her head. "Probably for the best." She responded, playing along with his remark. Although she wouldn't really be surprised by even half of what Corey must have heard.
"Only seventy. Psht." The redhead scoffed. "I'm still slathering sunscreen. I don't wanna blend in with my outfit at the wedding." She joked before turning her head a little to rub her eyes against Corey's arm. "God, I am tired. We're not even past the hour mark." She stretched her legs a little before leaning back in her own chair.
"How do I bring the seat down? There's enough room for the people at the back right? Fuck that, who cares. Where's the doodat for the seat?"

Corey fell silent and simply sat there and watched as Reid fiddled around with her seat. It was an almost comical affair. The redhead poked at this, tugged at that, pressed this button and even messed with the now defunct, never used ashtray built into the arm rest of the chair. All talk of their plans for when they landed aside he was struck by the simple concept of this being the first time the two of them had gone anywhere out of town together. As is their respective careers made it difficult to find the time to do anything, let alone leave either of their houses to do so.
"Here." He reached out and pressed a small button on the side of the chair itself that caused the seat back to ratchet forward on a spring so Reid could push it back to a more comfortable position. "Got to be smarter than the chair." Corey pointed out, settled into his own seat and leaning his head back. "Remember that."
After Corey's help, Reid pressed the button he had with a glare. She rolled her eyes at Corey and sought his hand out. She started drawing lazy circles against the back and closed her eyes in an attempt to sleep.
"There aren't any layovers right? Wake me up when we're there." She snuggled into the plush chair and almost immediately was knocked out.
---
Waking up, she blinked as the bright light overhead shone into her eyes. Rubbing at them, she cleared her throat. "Where are we?"

Corey's head shook, silently answering Reid's question. The flight itself wasn't long, just a few hours. There was no need to switch planes on this trip, thankfully. A thin smile touched his face as he felt the soft tips of Reid's fingers running along the back of his hand. He settled into his own chair as a faint chill ran along his spine at the redhead's touch. After a few moments he glanced to the side only to find Reid fast asleep.
When the plane finally touched down in San Diego Corey chuckled upon hearing Reid's groggy words. He glanced to her and offered a faint smile, reaching over to brush a stray strand of red hair that had fallen into her face while she slept. "Welcome to California." He said before getting out of his seat to let Reid do the same.
Within half an hour the duo had exited the plane, retrieved their luggage and found their way into their rental car. Corey had taken the liberty of cranking up the air conditioning before the car left the underground parking garage. He was used to the sun and heat, he knew Reid wasn't. "We have a few hours to kill after we check into the hotel." He said as he navigated the car out of the garage and out into the San Diego streets. "Want to hit the beach before meeting up with my friend?"

Reid instinctively leaned her cheek into his brief contact before stretching and getting out of the seat to follow Corey out. She wasn't going to lie, there was excitement bubbling in the five foot six inched woman that she hadn't anticipated. It was almost with child-like wonder that she just followed Corey around, going through the process after exiting the plane.
She was ever so grateful when she didn't have to spend too much time in the humid carpark as she climbed into their rental, buckling up and pulling her sunglasses from her bag and putting it on.
"Beach...yes. So long as we get sunscreen first." She gave him a wide beam before looking out the window to look at the sights. A comfortable silence blanketed the pair as Corey drove.

Corey was nothing if not prepared. While he didn't often make use of sunscreen (for obvious reasons) he knew better than to allow his alabaster skinned girlfriend do so. Having thought of everything (or at least close to), Corey had procured a large bottle of the precious, sunburn preventing lotion well before the two of them had left. Once they reached the hotel he pulled the bottle from his bag and handed it over, allowing Reid to take care of that while he worked on getting them settled into the room.
It wasn't long before the duo stepped out of the beachfront hotel and started down the sidewalk. The sun was shining brightly and a cool, salty breeze wafted in from the ocean. While they weren't on exactly the right coast there was something familiar and welcoming about being close to the beach. Corey had grown up in Miami which was drastically different than California but they were at least more similar than Montana.
Corey took a deep breath and felt the sun melt away any tension he may have been carrying. He looked out over the area before starting along the sidewalk, taking in the calm, laid back vibe. "It's not Miami but it'll do." He said with a light chuckle as he glanced to Reid in order to gauge her reaction.

As she applied sunscreen, Reid couldn't help but watch as Corey moved about the room. He was quiet in his movements, a surprise for some considering his size and height. She took the time to appreciate her partner with a small smile on her face.
She had decided to go with a one piece bathing suit with thin harem pants and an almost sheer blouse, a little scared of the weather outside. But as soon as she stepped out into the open air, she chuckled to herself and ran her fingers through her hair. "I don't know what I was expecting but it wasn't this." She nudged Corey a little and grinned up at him.
