Alaska had been waiting for an opportunity to slip away to find the music room for a while, now. Finally, she found her self standing in front of the music room door, and honesty started to feel a little giddy. She hadn't been able to play piano in a while. She didn't want to make a big deal about it in front of anyone, because the only ones who knew that she could play were her parents.
Eagerly, Alaska pushed open the door to the music room and looked around. No one. Empty. Shwing. She quickly closed the door behind her and made her way behind the piano. Cracking her knuckles, she began to play. Growing up in a very Christian home, she'd only really been allowed to play hymnals. But this one song was the exception to her overbearing mom. Written by Eliza Gilkyson about the tragic tsunami that wrecked Japan, Alaska's mom couldn't turn down the piece when she'd heard it.
Alaska's fingers danced along the keys beautifully as she began to sing the words. As poetry, Alaska felt like only music could express it as well as it needed to be expressed.
"Mother Mary, full of grace, awaken.
All our homes are gone, our loved ones taken.
Taken by the sea -
Mother Mary, calm our fears, have mercy.
Drowning in a sea of tears, have mercy.
Hear our mournful plea.
Our world has been shaken,
we wander our homelands, forsaken."
The piano was perfectly in tune, and Alaska had no way to make a mistake. She continued fully engrossed in the song, blind to anything other than the music. She was completely enveloped in the poetry. She would never allow anyone to see her like this. After all, it wasn't cool.
