Alaska Lynn Baker
FACE CLAIM: Hayden Panettiere
---------------------------------
AGE: 17
GENDER: Female
ORIENTATION: Bisexual
POSITION: Student
POWER: Dreamscaping
"What can I say? I'm the girl of your dreams!" Dreamscaping is the ability to see and enter other's dreams while they are in REM sleep. Alaska can see someone's dreams by looking at them while they slumber in REM sleep states. However, by making physical contact with the sleeper's head, she can delve deeper. Alaska often will go into a trance, seemingly staring off into space, during this time she finds herself within the dreams of another. Alaska finds herself a rested after each scape.
LIMITATIONS:
"Things can only go so far." Alaska can only see the dreams of those who are in REM sleep. They also must be within her vision. Entrance into another's dreams can only be achieve by touching an REM sleeper's head. If either participant becomes too excited within the dream, she will be forced out. Alaska does not have any ability to change what is within the dream as of now. The bridge between the two minds can only be extended for a limited period of time. Right now she can dreamscape for only ten minutes. This ability only extends to humans. Use on any other animal fails.
SIDE-EFFECTS:
Mild Insomnia
Headaches with overuse
Alaska doesn't dream
HEIGHT: 5' 0"
HAIR COLOR: Blonde
EYE COLOR: Green
MISC:
Alaska has her ears and belly button pierced, and typically wears her hair down. She also likes to keep up with the latest fashions, but hey, what teenage girl doesn't?
PERSONALITY:
"Just be who you want to be. Worry about others later." Alaska is a social butterfly. She loves getting out and meeting new people. She has no problem getting along with others, with the exception of those who piss her off. She has a pretty long fuse, and isn't typically angered easily.
"Let's chill, guys." Alaska is also very laid back and like to just hang around and chill with her friends in a calm environment. She's pretty open to other people's beliefs and ways of life, and doesn't judge prematurely very often. She isn't very high energy unless...you give her sugar. Alaska is sensitive to sugars and things like energy drinks, so whenever she consumes it, she becomes hyper active and gets the jitters.
“That's the funny thing about destiny. It happens whether you plan it or not.” Alaska loves romance. She's really into chick flicks and sappy romance novels. Alaska is really into doing romantic things with significant others and often falls in love too fast. She's a hopeless romantic, and it's led to a broken heart many a times.
“Herb is the healing of a nation, alcohol is the destruction.” Alaska often gets herself into trouble. She often likes to do crazy things and sometimes ends up in the wrong crowd. Lately, behind her parent's backs she's been buying and smoking marijuana. She doesn't feel like there's anything wrong with it, and she enjoys little more than chilling with some friends and a bag of kush. She avoids alcohol at every turn, mostly because of the past alcoholism in her family. Alaska also will never pick up a cigarette again, after having a moment with her mom. Since then she is less extreme, but she still likes to have a good time.
"But hey, who actually likes school?" Alaska is very intelligent, and often thinks for herself. She's not too big on attending class, however, and has to force her self every day to get up and go. She's kind of lazy when it comes to school work, but her book-smarts balance it out. She never studies by lack of interest, but always tends to hold over a 3.0 grade average.
SECRET(S):
"Secrets don't make friends, but friends make secrets."
Alaska keeps most of her secrets from her parents. Two big things that she refuses to let her parents know are her marijuana use and the fact that she's bisexual. She's afraid of what her parents might say if she ever brought home a girlfriend.
When it comes to secrets from friends, she doesn't like to spread rumors or even share her friends secrets with other friends. When someone confides in her, she hardly ever tells anyone else unless it's dangerous.
Alaska is afraid of mice.
FATHER: Don Baker
MOTHER: Lynda Baker
SIBLINGS: Jonathan Baker
WORTHY MENTIONS: Uncle Barney
CHILDHOOD:
Born to Don and Lynda Baker in Kirkwood, Missouri, Alaska had a very privileged childhood. Her father works as a head for a coal business, and her mom works as real-estate agent. Using the large amount of income, they were able to afford nannies, and private schooling for Alaska.
This was much to shelter her from the life of her Uncle Barney who was at his height of his alcoholism at the time. He'd drink himself into the hospital or into prison and end up calling his brother, Don, for money for the bill or bail. He was a large menace in the Baker's eyes and Alaska's parents made very sure that he wasn't allowed to see Alaska.
Besides the situation regarding her uncle, the rest of her childhood went off without a hitch. The worst part of her childhood was how sheltered she'd been. And that ended up badly.
ADOLESCENCE:
Eventually, Alaska convinced her parents to allow her to attend public school for her middle school and high school days. She was really looking forward to being a normal kid. Her first couple years of middle schooling, she did very well keeping her grades at a straight A level, and she went to school every day.
During Alaska's last year of middle school she started dating a boy named Cliff. During this time, she began to rebel against her parents, and started skipping class. She fell into a bad crowd of kids who'd get into lots of trouble. Eventually her mom caught on.
Spring break of Alaska's freshman year, she was up in her room with the window open, smoking a cigarette. Her mom called her downstairs to go clothes shopping. This was rare, going out with her mother to shop. So, eagerly, Alaska dumped the cigarette and ran downstairs. They loaded up into the vehicle and headed down the road. Everything seemed fine up until they passed the mall. Alaska looked at her mom suspiciously and asked where they were going. No answer. Only driving. After a few minutes her mom looked at her. Her mom told Alaska that she was taking her to get baptized. When they finally pulled into the church parking lot, Alaska refused to get out of the vehicle. Alaska's mom looked at her and said, "If you do this, I will get you anything you want." Anything? Alaska requested cigarettes, and her mom solemnly agreed.
After the baptism, they stopped at a gas station and her mom went in to buy her cigarettes. When she returned, looking torn up and sad, Alaska's mom handed her the pack. As another attempt to rebel against her mother, Alaska promptly lit the first cigarette in the car next to her mom. But instead of victory, all she felt was disappointment and guilt. After a few hits of the cigarette, Alaska tossed it.
That night Alaska had planned on calling her friends about what a pushover her mom had been, but she never did. All that ran through her head was how disappointed her mother had looked when she came back to the vehicle. The next morning, Alaska returned the pack of cigarettes to her mother. She couldn't bring herself to smoke another one. From that point on, Alaska stopped being so rebellious against her parents. Of course, she'd sometimes get out of line and screw up. But she always tried to please her parents.
That's when it first started happening. The last two weeks of school was really strange for Alaska. She began to have troubles sleeping, and so would be pretty tired during class. One day, Alaska was passing by a kid in the library when she saw something strange. A bubble above the kid's head while his face was buried into the book. It was obvious he was sleeping. But when Alaska looked at the kid, the bubble appeared. And it seemed to be playing a movie. From the perspective of the kid who was sleeping, Scooter, it was a movie about him training for a boxing match. But movies didn't appear like this. Ever.
Alaska visited the school counselor and informed her about everything that had been going on. The counselor helped her through it with some advice and notified her parents. That's when the officials from Bellefonte Academy appeared at her front door.
It was going to be a big change moving away from her parents, but Alaska knew that this was the right thing to do. If she could find someone to help her manage her new ability to see and enter one's dreams, then Alaska was all for it. Plus, this was an opportunity for her to start anew.
SAMPLE:
Glenn had been searching for the music room for what seemed like an hour as he stumbled back across the reception area once more. Clad in blue jeans, and a black button down over an electric blue t-shirt (that would normally say Fall Out Boy if the button down didn't obscure the words), he shifted Sapphire on his back. This guitar was his baby. He'd even purchased a crimson suede guitar case for when he decided to take it places, for occasions such as this one.
As Glenn decided to go ahead and ask where the music room was, he suddenly heard a small voice singing in some foreign language. His eyebrows shifted back and forth as he tucked himself around the other side of the wall, listening. It was strange sounding, but almost like a siren, it made you want to keep listening. Obviously, a boy's voice, this strange melody rang out. But as quickly as it had started, it vanished, stopping short of what seemed like a longer song. "I guess he only knows one verse? And what kind of language is that? Sounds like....Italian...or French, maybe?"
Glenn turned the corner and spotted where the sound originated from. A pretty tall guy came walking in through the main doors. Interested in the odd tongue of this person, he decided to greet him, and perhaps find out where the stupid music room is.
"Uh....Hi. I'm Glenn. Do you know where the music room is?", Glenn asked very slowly, just in case the person didn't speak English. Glenn scratched his head and shifted his weight to his back leg, a habit he'd adopted from his martial arts training..
