The holidays meant a lot of things. You were forced to hear carols on the radio and watch the same Christmas movies every year, at least one every day. You had to go shopping for hours, fighting with other people in order to get everything on your list for your friends and family. And Tamara had to set the Christmas tree in the dorms. At least it was only one of those. No wreath to hang on every door or basket to give the staff. Just the tree, at the entrance.
It was not a real tree, of course. It was a fake one they had to piece up together every year only to take it away once the season was over. Tamara was not a Grinch but being forced to get this tree up in a corner took her enough time as it was. And she had yet decorated it. Well, it was not exactly true. She spent the last minutes walking around the damn thing to hang garlands. She just didn’t put the ornaments yet, other than the star at the top.
The ladder was still there near the tree and two boxes full of all sorts of ornaments, some pretty, some... she’d rather not comment on those. And people expected her to hang them all over. Only she didn’t want to be the only one having ‘fun’ this season. Others should enjoy the torture as well. She took in herself to force every student who walked in to grab one ornament and hang it wherever they wanted in the tree. Hey, it was theirs as much as it was hers. In fact, she considered it more theirs than hers since she couldn’t care less about having a tree here.
People didn’t seem to complain too much about it. It only took a minute of their time. They didn’t even have to watch which bauble they grabbed or where they put it, only to do it. This was going so well that she considered she only had to place a note by the boxes to tell the students what to do and left two minutes to get some coffee. When she returned... nothing. Yet there definitely was a bunch of students who passed by and they clearly put nothing in the tree.
“Hey you, over there,” she called out for one of said student. No way was she going to decorate it all by herself. “Congratulations, you’ve been selected to help out with the holiday decorations. Now grab some baubles and put them in the tree.” She had her cup of coffee in her hands, blowing softly on the burning hot liquid. They could do it. She would supervise. She was great at supervising.
