Nathan Lee
FACE CLAIM: Lee Jihoon (Woozi)
---------------------------------
AGE: 17 (February 11th)
GENDER: Male
ORIENTATION: Homosexual
POSITION: Bellefonte Student
POWER: Visualised Empathy
Nathan can see people's emotions by examining their auras. These auras appear to him as a sphere, which will adapt in shape depending on a person's mood (like this), but every person has a specific colour which depends on their personality, which won't change (Nathan's mood sphere is pink). The more emotional a person is, the brighter their colour will be, and the stronger a person is mentally, the more vague their sphere will be.

For reference, Nathan's own sphere (which he can only see when he looks in the mirror) usually has a slightly rough outline to it, and is pink. ((EDIT: Here is a website where you can find out your character's personality type; www.16personalities.com/free-personality-test ))
Also, despite this table, he only knows a few for certain (marked with a *), and knows that some colours relate to some personality traits (i.e. Pink/purple colours tend to be kind). The mood shapes are more well known to him, and he can usually identify a person's mood quickly.
LIMITATIONS:
From the ability to realise others' emotions comes Nathan's own occasional emotional strain - he can feel emotionally numb himself if he spends too much time looking at people's emotions. The ability comes naturally, but he has developed the ability to block it out for periods of time up to half a day. Trying to block the ability much longer can cause him to become hysterical from the suppression. The spheres will appear to him on people up to twenty metres away. He can extend this distance, or attempt to strengthen the clarity of a person's emotion to himself, but both of these can and will cause eye strain and headaches if done for too long or to too much of an extreme extent. His ability doesn't work through electricity - e.g. he would not be able to see another person's sphere during a video call.
SIDE-EFFECTS:
Refer to limitations - but for clarity.
Trying to concentrate on his ability for too long will cause eye strain and headaches and, at worst, physical exhaustion. He cannot make himself faint, however.
Trying to block out his ability without a break for too long will cause physical and emotional exhaustion, increasing the possibility of emotional breakdowns or hysterical fits.
Spending too much time looking directly at people's mood spheres will cause emotional numbness and a sense of blankness to occur until he sleeps or blocks out the spheres for enough time.
HEIGHT: 5'6"
HAIR COLOR: Naturally dark brown, but dyed light pink most of the time (and occasionally other colours)
EYE COLOR: Dark brown
MISC: Nathan has no piercings, but he does have a small tattoo on the inside of his left arm (x - the chemical diagram for serotonin). He has a scar on the outside of his right arm where an AMA member attacked him with a glass bottle and cut his arm open. His smile is very bright and white, thanks to his mother's influence. Nathan sticks to the dress code given pretty firmly. He has an average build, with a little pudge.
PERSONALITY: Nathan isn't what one would call 'outgoing'. He used to strive for that kind of image, but by this point, he's decided to try and be more comfortable with himself and how he really acts. He has friends, though he has lost some of his old ones due to his switch in attitude, and he talks to... people, but if you were to look up 'introvert' in the dictionary, you would see his adorable face beaming back at you. He can be chronically shy around new people, or anyone he finds to be particularly daunting, to the point of not being able to talk. Even around his friends, he is usually a listener and not a speaker, but he would be a lot less uncomfortable in such a situation. He is perpetually nice, unlike his brother, and dislikes even the idea of insulting someone (for no good reason). His confidence is pretty average, and he doesn't think too lowly of himself, but he does have bad days like most people. He hates being unnecessarily loud or noisy, however, which means that if someone were to talk down at him, he wouldn't be able to retort, and would probably sulk about his lack of bravery for the rest of the day. He's rather secretive and careful when it comes to anything about himself. Hardly anyone knows the simplest things about him, such as the fact that he loves science and plays the drums - and just to clarify, he doesn't consider this unnecessary noise, but a necessary outlet to vent his frustrations.
As well as playing the drums, Nathan is a compulsive doodler, especially when he's feeling particularly anxious about... anything. It puts his twitching hands to good use, he says. One of the main contributors to his anxiety is his ability to come to conclusions without any solid evidence. Someone he doesn't know says hello to him - he thinks they have a crush on him. His essay isn't where he left it - it must have been thrown away and now he'll never pass the semester. He isn't the most intelligent person in Bellefonte by far, but Nathan considers himself to be above average at the least (or the most). Things like crosswords and card games are a lot of fun to him as well. He's also particularly skilled at tennis and badminton, which he originally picked up to try and make more friends and 'meet hot chicks' (eugh), but now he enjoys it for the sport itself.
As a note, he is a vegetarian, due to the fact he believes that the animal cruelty is not necessary to sustain a healthy diet. And his momma raised him that way. And yes, he will survive without ever having tasted bacon, thank you.
SECRET(S): Not exactly a secret, but something that people assume to be false - he isn't a virgin, and lost his virginity a couple of days after his sixteenth birthday. Also he is not open about his homosexuality yet.
FATHER: Andrew Lee, 46, super strength, construction worker
MOTHER: Melissa Ivory, 47, unpowered, dentist
SIBLINGS: Spencer Lee, 20, super speed, college student
WORTHY MENTIONS: Stepmother - Indira Lee, 49, unpowered, massage therapist
CHILDHOOD: Nathan was born in Idaho on a brisk February evening, three years after his brother began gracing the Earth. The quiet boy began having an average childhood - his parents loved him and accepted him for who he was and who he wanted to be. The little boy seemed bright even then, and was pushed to try and be as great as he could be - even if 'great' at that time came from putting the right blocks in the right holes, but it was certainly a start. He was bright and happy and well looked after. This continued as he grew older and went to elementary - although as soon as Spencer realised he could pick on Nathan and blame him for things, he did. Nathan worked through it. Working through it involved a lot of crying at the time but at least justice was served!
It was at the ripe old age of eight that a real drama began. Nathan was fairly intuitive when it came to other people's feelings, and he could tell something was wrong with his mom and dad. He continued as normal until one day in October, his mother spoke to him in a gentle voice about how Daddy was going to move out for a while to see if it would make him happier, because it was important for people to be happy. Another month passed and the couple filed for divorce. It did upset Nathan quite a bit, but he didn't want to show it, so the little boy grew into his smile and tried to be as happy and friendly and good as possible. He made many friends at school and attempted to stand up to his brother numerous times (with numerous failures... but it was the effort that counted!), and so he grew into this personality as he got older. He remained in the custody of his mother, as did Spencer.
When Nathan turned ten, there was another occurrence that shifted the family again. Spencer became even more mean, at an even faster rate - but it wasn't just his personality this time. Spencer had manifested the ability of super speed. His mom wasn't sure what to think, and Nathan didn't know either. Spencer was sent off to Bellefonte and Nathan was left alone for a while.
ADOLESCENCE: During the time Nathan was alone in Idaho with his mother (occasionally joined in the holidays by Spencer, and sometimes also his dad). To be honest, he enjoyed the alone time, but he had decided that that was wrong. He wasn't a loner! Loners were losers and he did not want to be a loser, so he continued to act as before, and his confidence built. He began learning how to play the drums, and still does to this day (and very well). He started playing tennis and doing other sports occasionally - though he focused more on activities where he held a racket. He gained a large group of friends and was pretty popular, if he could say so himself. He got asked out by girls sometimes too, which was weird, but cool, but weird. He was fairly certain that he felt weird about girls because they had cooties and that was gross, but he couldn't help feeling like maybe there was something else going on...
In the midst of all this, at the age of thirteen, he started seeing things. Little shapes over people's heads. He didn't want to be insane, so at first, he didn't tell his mother, but after a day or so of these... things being around, he started to get splitting headaches that completely destroyed Nathan's ability to think straight, and so he had to tell his mom. He had a very good relationship with her, so even though he thought he was insane, he knew she wouldn't be mean about it. She said to wait and see if it got worse, but ultimately, she was now concerned too.
A few more days passed, and a man from Bellefonte Academy came asked questions, and ended by confirming that Nathan, too, had manifested. He had the ability to see other people's emotions. Nathan thought it was all very weird and he wasn't sure he liked it... but he went along with all the weirdness and soon went to Bellefonte. Now, when Spencer had been spent to Bellefonte, Melissa believed he would be fine on his own and let him stay in the dorms, but now that Nathan was a mutant as well...? She didn't want to leave him alone, and didn't want to be alone herself, so she moved, with Nathan, to Kalispell. He still lives with her now, and she babies him at every opportunity. It's embarrassing... but he still loves her to bits.
Nathan's father remarried when he had turned fifteen. Nathan wasn't bitter or sore about it - he was glad that his dad was happy again. He could see it clearly every time they met in person. Spencer decided to stay in the dorms when the rest of his family moved, but he still comes to their house occasionally for free food and more space (and to pick on Nathan, nothing's changed there really).
Nathan began becoming the person he is today after his sixteenth birthday. He had just stopped enjoying himself, and didn't see the point in acting like someone he didn't think he was. Slowly, he went to less parties, worked harder at school and started to truly become happier. He didn't want to feel fake any longer and now he doesn't, but he has back-tracked tremendously. Currently, he's trying to find a good balance between being a comfortable introvert and being sociable, and he'll get there eventually. He enjoys finding out more about his ability, and tries to use it to help people when he can.
SAMPLE: Some birds were dicks. Gryphon had been around them enough to understand basic personalities from different species. Seagulls were thieving meanies. Pigeons were pretty chill. Geese and swans were too proud and selfish. Most smaller birds, like wagtails and tits, they were sweet. They were the most likely ones to help you, if you asked. In their language, of course. Owls were too proud, like most birds of paradise and birds of prey. But he wasn’t concerned with all these different types right now – no, he had noticed a sleek crow in the vicinity. Crows were dicks, similarly to seagulls. He’d gotten into a bad kerfuffle with a crow once, and now he had a small scar on his finger from it. So as long as Mr. Crow kept his distance, Gryph would be happy.
Well, obviously the universe hated him.
The sound caught his attention. It was basically a second language for him. The question was – to respond, or not to respond? “Whatja want?” He asked, in English, yes. He didn’t want to seem insane yet, and he had a mouthful of apple. He swallowed it down as the crow rattled on, rolling his eyes. Of course. His next responses were spoken in similar cooing rattles – but Gryph didn’t speak to crows the often, so the sound edged more on the side of cooing. Like a pigeon with a sore throat.
’I think not. So lazy.’ Another bite of apple. Gryphon narrowed his eyes at the crows, wrapping his arms around his food, ’Get your own.’
His wings ruffled uncomfortably, ’Unless you want to keep trying to convince me. Obviously, you’re an expert.’ With that, Gryph snagged a chip and put it in his mouth teasingly. Hah. Dumb crow.
