Jaebum "Jay" Im Kwon
FACE CLAIM: Won-sik Kim
---------------------------------
AGE: 18
GENDER: Male
ORIENTATION: Bisexual
POSITION: Student
POWER: Body Paint Secretion
Jaebum has the power to create a different color of body paint-like fluid from each of his fingers. That's about all their is to it. Starting with the left pinkie all the way to the right one, the colors are: Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Violet, Pink, White, Brown, Black
LIMITATIONS:
Jay's level of hydration greatly affects how much paint he is able to produce at a given time before he needs to "refill" his levels, so to speak. When he is well-hydrated, he can produce about 1 fluid ounce of each color (or 10 fluid ounces total). When dehydrated, that number decreases, reaching a low of about 3 fluid ounces.
SIDE-EFFECTS:
The number one side-effect, which relates to the limitations, is dehydration. The more paint that Jay creates, the more dehydrated he gets, which results in dizziness and headaches as well. And of course, when he isn't paying attention to controlling his ability, another easy side-effect is getting paint on anything that he touches without intending to.
HEIGHT: 5'11"
HAIR COLOR: Naturally black; usually dyed some bright color (i.e. red or blue)
EYE COLOR: Brown
MISC: Both lobes pierced; industrial piercing on the right ear; a couple scars here and there from (mostly old) scuffles.
There isn't a lot that's particularly spectacular about Jay's appearance. He's somewhat average in height for his gender and age, relatively toned, and has smooth, lightly tanned skin that's unmarred apart from the couple scars mentioned above. The only thing that typically stands out a lot is his hair, as he tends to change the color of it somewhat frequently. He dresses casually, usually nothing more than jeans, a t-shirt and open jacket, and occasionally a snap-back if he's in the mood.
PERSONALITY: On the outside, Jay tends to keep a tough exterior. He's highly distrustful, and keeps most people at a distance until they've earned his trust. This doesn't necessarily mean that he's unfriendly - he can get along with most people alright, for the most part - but it can be hard to get much personal information out of him without first breaking past his thick shell, which can take some time. He's quick to snap and has a short temper, however, so nosy people are much more likely to get on his bad side.
He's not anti-social... But he also doesn't make an effort to be overly social either. If he finds himself in a situation where he has to mingle, he usually does fine, but he doesn't seek out social interactions unless he's craving someone's presence in particular. That is, he much prefers the companionship of one person that he trusts rather than a party full of people he doesn't know, but he can survive in either situation.
Jay does have some typical bad-boy habits, among which include occasional drinking and being 'loose' with his sexuality. Again, he doesn't go out of his way to find booze or sexual partners, but if the opportunities arise, he's unlikely to turn them down. Both men and women perk his interest; he has no preference for one over the other; as long as he finds the person attractive, that's all that matters.
For those few that do manage to find their way through the cracks in Jay's emotional wall, they'll find a rather soft-spoken, pensive young man that enjoys activities like reading and playing with his hedgehog. He also is passionate about dancing, mostly referring to Youtube videos to learn more after he moved away from his dance instructor in Seattle. Once you've earned Jaebum's trust, he's incredibly loyal and protective, and will fight tooth and nail to make sure those he cares about are safe and happy.
SECRET(S): Jay tends to keep his soft tendencies to himself, apart from the few people that get to know him better.
FATHER: Choi, Ki-Hong (age 42, unknown, non-powered)
MOTHER: Kwon, Jungyeon (age 41, alive, glass manipulation)
SIBLINGS: None
WORTHY MENTIONS: Leo, his dance instructor in Seattle; Fuse, his pet hedgehog
CHILDHOOD: Jaebum was born on September 21st, 1997, on a cold, rainy day in downtown Seattle. His parents, unmarried at the time of his conception, hadn't planned on having children, which made it unsurprising that his father disappeared on both of them not too long after he was born. His mother was young and inexperienced, and also not ready to have a child in her life, which she quickly realized as she tried to take care of the baby on her own. She had to work two jobs just to keep a roof over their heads, and also worked at home creating glass art to sell at local art galleries.
She didn't make a lot of money this way, and was often stressed and fatigued, which didn't create the best living environment for the young Jay. He didn't do all that well in school, as he had no motivation to really try, and had a hard time making friends, since no one had really taught him how to do it. He quickly learned that it was best to keep to himself if he didn't want to get more hurt; his father had left his mother, after all, so why should he trust anyone if his own parent had abandoned him?
ADOLESCENCE: Going into his teenage years, not a lot changed. Jaebum was a moody, loner sort of kid, and became a moody, loner sort of young adult, too. He didn't talk to a lot of people, so he was kept alone for the most part. Bullies didn't really pick on him because he grew quick for his age and didn't have anything special to really be picked on apart from his quiet nature. His grades were never better than average. For the most part, he was just... There, existing.
It would have been easy for him to sink into the gang scene at a young age if it wasn't for a man he met by chance on the street. The guy was homeless, but it was hard to tell by how chipper and full of life he was. He often did street performances for money, and Jaebum eventually learned that for only a couple of dollars, the guy - Leo - was happy to teach him some moves. And so, a couple days a week, the young boy would sneak a couple bills away from his overly-busy mother and run off to see his so-called instructor, where he quickly picked up the basics and finally found a passion in something. His mood brightened some, and though he was still quiet and closed-off to most people, he managed to stop being so depressed and only keep to himself. He started to think for himself; his grades got a little better.
When he was thirteen, his powers manifested. It was a messy affair rather than anything all that frightening or traumatizing for him or anyone around him - he'd just been working on a homework assignment in home room when a girl that he had a crush on started talking to him, making him flustered and his heart beat quickly. Before he knew what was happening, rainbow-colored paint began seeping from his fingertips, coating the paper he was working on with the fluid. Surprised but not alarmed, he soon realized that he'd manifested - something his mother had told him might happen someday. It was more embarrassing than anything else, as he had no way to explain it to his crush without seeming weird. Of course he would get stuck with such a dumb power!
It didn't take long, though, for Jaebum to get recruited to Bellefonte. It wasn't too hard to leave, since he didn't have any really close friends and his home life wasn't all that great. Leo was the hardest person to leave - Jay promised to visit him when he could, but he was sad that he no longer would have someone to go to when he wanted to learn something new. At Bellefonte, he kept up the wall he'd been building ever since he was young, and didn't make friends quickly, but over time he has managed to ease into life at the Academy and make a place for himself there, even if it's a quiet one. He gets into occasional scuffles due to his unpredictable temper, but nothing that brings a lot of attention to himself amongst the many other students that live there.
SAMPLE: Zeke couldn't actually recall how he'd met Eugene Whitaker, or how they'd somehow become unexpected friends. It had been a year or two ago, at least, and despite their differences in class, ages, and personalities, they managed to get along alright. Sure, sometimes Gene was a little aggressive and Zeke always just let him do what he wanted without a fight, but they were both pretty quiet individuals that just liked to play games, so it worked.
The older boy went over to Eugene's place every once in a while to do just that. The Whitaker boy had much better and more recent gaming systems (not to mention more of them in general), and apparently didn't mind that Zeke mooched off of him a little in that way. He paid Gene back in quiet company, someone to play partner games with, and sometimes snacks (he'd come to learn the boy's favorites by now).
Today, bundled up in a thick winter coat against the chilly weather, Zeke knocked on Eugene's lavish front door with a plastic bag clutched in his hand. Upon the door opening, he would offer the tiniest of smiles and lifted the bag slightly. "Hi," he said softly. "I brought Nutella and cereal. I think it's the kind that you like." When ushered inside, Zeke quickly stepped into the warmth of the house and took off his jacket to hang on the coat rack. "Have you got any new games lately?" he asked with quiet curiosity; his voice rarely raised above a whisper. "There have been a lot of releases lately, it seems like."
