That Awkward Moment When…

Biology. A natural science concerned with the study of life and living organisms, including their structure, function, growth, evolution, distribution, and taxonomy. In other words it was learning, it involved school and Devyn was not interested in it at all. Even less so because today on a nice sunny day they were outside. OUTSIDE! Where there was sun shining and because all a bright and happy sun. Devyn was not happy at all. She was wearing a pair of black jeans, a red shirt, white a white tank top underneath, and a black hoodie with white paint splattered on it. Her hood was up and she had a pair of dark shades on. She was burning, like alive. She was hot and irritable because she was out in the sun. She literally felt like the sun was trying to banish her away for being a mutant with power over showers. The teacher does not look like she likes the sun either. Devyn thought as she was awake enough to look at the teacher, who as well was pretty well covered, had shades on, and even a parcel. Devyn never really paid too much attention before, but today her interest was high.

Did this teacher have powers over shadows too? Or was she just super light sensitive? It was because of those questions that when the teacher said class was over and everyone started to leave, Devyn lingered behind. Moving over to the shade of the tree where the teacher was, thankful to be under the shade of the tree. Her mind went blank for a moment as she opened her mouth to speak. Her teacher was hot! Like really hot! How old was she? Devyn’s eyes had already sized her up out of a natural habit but now her eyes were lingering over her teacher once more. Age was just a number and she was ready to ignore it at a chance to get to know this teacher on a little more personal level. “Hey teacher, you don’t like the sun either?” Devyn asked, it was literally the best question she could come up with so she was not just standing there checking out her teacher. There was something familiar about her, but Devyn just assumed because she had seen this teacher before and she was currently her biology teacher.

How much longer did she have to teach these brats? Half of them weren't even listening, she was sure. Which sucked to be them. She was going to have the time of her life giving a pop quiz the next day on everything that had been covered in this class. Today, they were outside to teach. Not because she liked the sun or being out here. No, it was because she wanted them to be able to see, to visualize. Seeing was much better when talking about niches. And there were so many niches in this area. Even on the school grounds, you could see and hear what kind of wildlife lived here, how they lived, where they slept and stayed. Everything was beautiful out in the open. And that was why she was out here with her class.

But the second she felt her phone vibrating in her pocket, she sent a silent 'thank god' to whatever deity lived up there. She used her free hand to adjust her glasses and then twisted the black parasol in her hands. It did well to keep her body out of the vicious sun. She hated sunlight, it hurt her. Right down to her very shadow, a shadow trapped inside of her, trying to stay there and hide. It was always funny, seeing people freak out where ever Clarice went. Having no shadow always made it easier to sneak up on people no matter where the sun may be positioned.

She watched her kids leave and then reached into her pocket to quickly silence her phone before leaning against the tree she had so strategically placed herself under. Her parasol was leaning forward a little as her back hit the bark. She could feel her eyes slowly closing, just so she could take in the fresh air as well as keep them from having to look towards the harsh, deadly rays of the sun. She had thought that, and hoped that, everyone in her class had left. Moved on to whatever came next. She'd have to go train someone soon next. Energy training, always annoying but if it helped, she'd do it. But that was an hour or so away.

That was when she heard a voice. A voice that made her roll her eyes before opening them. Looking down towards the girl (that was a girl, right?) standing there, she sighed. "What does it look like, kid? If I liked the sun, I'd be standing out in it," she said, a bit snappish, but she quickly reigned that in. "You got a question for me, Missy?"

Devyn caught the eye roll but figured it was because of her dumb question but at least she did not stand their gawking. Smooth. Devyn thought to herself as she moves some of her hair out of her face, noting to herself that she need to get back in the game. She was not sure if she caught the look on confusion on Clarice's face when the woman looked at her, but was pleased either way. She was used to people getting her gender confused, she in fact liked it so always made sure to always dress more so in her usual tomboy attire and was pleased that her looks could support either gender. It was always fun to have people guessing or thinking that she was a guy. It always made for a fun surprise later, especially if they found out when things were already in the bedroom. It was really funny then.

"Oh, snappy." Devyn responded to the snap because she spoke her mind and well she had just been snapped at, but her tone was friendly and light. She was not upset or anything yet because one this woman was hot and two she had her questions of course. "I more so asked in hopes you tell me about what your mutation is." Devyn said, since she was curious if it was what she was thinking it was. Plus if it was what she thought it was she cared to know about others that had powers similar to hers. People she could relate to and see how their power might have been different from hers. "I wanted to know what your power was and if I could have your number?" Devyn asked, clearly flirting at the end. She could not help it; it was basically in her nature to flirt with anyone that was older then her.

What the hell was with this girl? Why was she just watching her? Standing there? It was just kind of... weird. Didn't kids realise that teachers didn't really have the time to just stand here and waste some few precious minutes with a girl she was pretty sure she always saw falling asleep in class. Clarice turned her gaze down towards her nails, examining them closely. Her nails were painted a deep purple, but the colour seemed to be chipping and fading. Needed to get them redone.

She heard the girl speaking and just ignored her at first. She was simply stating the obvious, an annoying trait that some of the students seemed to have here. Scratch that, that most of them seemed to have. She sighed, though, none the less, as the girl started moving from pointing out the obvious to her powers. "Oh, my mutation, well why didn't you say so. Because I would have died if no one ever asked me to tell them about my powers," she responded, sarcasm dripping from her every syllable. Kids.

It was when she asked it again as well as for her number, that she started to laugh. It was a dark sort of laugh, one that held something evil to it, even though she didn't quite mean for it to. She blamed the affinity with shadows for it. "My number? Aren't you cute. Thinking I'd give some half-wit student my phone number," she snorted. "I'll tell you my power, sure. It's called umbral physiology or shadow mimicry. And my number? Is 1-800-Beat-It3." She tried to stop laughing, but it was pretty hard. "Look kid, trying to get a teachers number? That's ridiculous. Stick with kids your own age, why don't ya?"

Devyn was not stupid and could easily tell that this woman was not interested and didn't even want to really deal with her. One of those teachers. Devyn thought to herself, wondering why some people were even teachers if they didn't really like dealing with student. Devyn was eighteen; she still had a few months before she would be eighteen and an adult. Would the teacher give her the time of day then or would she just have to wait until she graduated from the academy? Miss Caroll; as Devyn knew her by was looking at her nails. Oh joy, this was going to be a fun interaction. All Devyn had really wanted was to ask about the teacher’s powers because she was interested in other who could control darkness like her. Even if it was most likely not the same as her mutation, it was still cool.

"Your sarcasm would have to be your least pretty feature about you." Devyn said as her smirk turned sly at this woman. If she was going to be sarcastic and short with Devyn well Devyn could do the same in return. Sure there was the risk of getting into trouble, but she didn't care. Devyn didn't have patience with people who were going to be outright rude or short with her, she would play back with their game. She was used to dealing with older people then younger ones anyways so in her mind she was basically at the adults levels even if she was only a seventeen. The teacher started to laugh, which Devyn half expected with how the woman was acting thus far in their little interaction. "So you do have control over shadow. Can you show me?" Devyn asked losing her smirk as she moved closer towards the woman. "I'll show you mind. I have control of shadows as well." Devyn added soon after to see if that might help with the whole why Devyn was talking to her in the first place.

As for the number she got from the woman, Devyn could not help but to chuckle and give a small applause to Miss Caroll. "Very nice. I might have to use that one at some point." Devyn said as she adjusted her shades, not removing them of course because evil bright day. Devyn chuckled at that last bit of words Caroll gave and gave a small eye roll, not that she would see it because of Devyn's really dark shades. "I actually always date and have fun with people older than me. Up to seven years apart I'll have you know." Devyn pointed out for Miss Caroll's information.

Clarice almost laughed at the comment the student made. Her least pretty feature. She wasn't sure if that was supposed to be a round about compliment or something else. But, either way, it was very amusing. With the tree being as shady as it was, Clarice decided to close her parasol and lean it against the trunk before running a hand through her hair. "Sarcasm's just one of my many amazing free features," she retorted, staring the student down. For a student, she had balls, she'd give her that. But she wasn't sure that it was always the best for a student to try and act this way towards a teacher. Then again, could prove to be pretty amusing.

As the girl moved closer to her, though, she quirked a brow. Well now, this was... weird. Kid knew that there were such thing as laws, right? She needed to stop trying to push forward and back off a little. Again, a disgusted 'Kids' resonated in her head as she listened. What was this, show and tell? No, this was school. She didn't need to just go around showing off her power. 'Eh, what's the worse that can happen?' A different part of her asked herself. And she was already in a shadow, which would make it all the easier for her to do. "You know what? Why not. If you're that interested," she said, almost half interested now. While she might not like students, sometimes, it was interesting to see what other powers were around the school. in this girls case, another shadow power could be interesting to see.

"I'm pretty sure I'm more than seven years older than you, kid," she said, not even caring about the near compliment about the number she had given. It hadn't been her best retort, but it had been something she had only made up on the spot. How could it be expected to be anywhere near amazing? "Always, huh? How old are you? You even legally able to do that? You can get a lot of people in trouble messing around with people that much older than you," she pointed out. Wow, who was this girl? Boy did she need to learn how to choose her words.

“I’m sure.” Devyn responded back to the woman’s comment about her one of many amazing free features. Devyn was already working up a possible list of what they could be. With a body like that she had to remove being bad in bed since it would have been some unnatural crime to be bad in bed with a body like that. Yeah, that was where Devyn’s mind was at the moment. The bedroom and a little bit of the battle field where locations in her mind, because the woman had at first been stubborn and sort of snippy with her. Devyn did have the stones to stand up to pretty much anyone no matter their age, she was an alpha type and therefore would stand up for herself, hold her ground, and was ready for what would come next. People had to make her submit or at least display that they were worth to be respected. Devyn never thought of herself as being disrespectful for being honest and flirting.

It was not like she was saying anything outright degrading like taking them outside or something, but she did understand that some people just didn’t like to be flirted with someone younger them…well actually she did not understand that. She knew when she as older she would take it as a compliment so long as they did it right. There was a right way and a wrong way to flirt after all. Devyn did know the laws, but so long as no one found out did it really matter? She liked older people, they had experience, and they were wiser. She could learn a thing or two from them and in return she could show them things or make them feel things they had never felt before in just that special Devyn way. “I am indeed very interested. I don’t meet too many people with power over darkness like myself.” Devyn pointed out, eager to see the woman’s power. Would it be closer to Devyn’s power, her dads, or something unlike what she had seen before? Devyn smirked as her teacher pointed out that she was probably seven year older then Devyn.

“Well I’m seventeen now but I will be eighteen at some point in the year. Plus I might be willing to make an exception for you.” Devyn pointed out as she gave Clarice a wink and moved to slide her hands into her pocket. She was more eager to see the woman’s power than anything else but she was not against any possible bounces from this interaction. “Plus the older ones are the ones that end up in more trouble than I do. You should at least know I’m very good at keeping secretes.” Devyn added after a moment as she stepped back a little to give the woman some room. She figured the woman could show her power and then Devyn could show hers as well. If her biology teacher wanted to see what Devyn could do and promised to not be scared off by it.
