Puppy Time (Ethan)

It was official. Levi was a grandfather, and a young one at that. Thirty years old and he had five grandbabies to take care of. It was true. Luna had gotten pregnant and given birth to the most adorable puppies he had ever seen. It had taken Levi a while to figure out what exactly was going on. Up until that moment Luna had been acting extremely weird and possessive. Not to mention she became somewhat lazy and a bit of a food hog. Considering he had never gotten either of them fixed this was not that much of a surprise.

He knew that there was no way he could keep them all. Even if he did there was no way he could take care of them now. Especially since he had a job now. Instead of dropping them off at a shelter Levi wanted to give them away to the people of Kalispell that wanted them and could affordable (time and money) to take care of them and give them the best life they deserve. The first person Levi had told was his good friend Ethan. A fellow dog lover as it was, and naturally Ethan had agreed to take on for himself. Which who could blame him. They were adorable. These dogs are probably the closest thing Levi will ever have to caring about another living being.

The local had left Luna with the four other puppies and home and decided to take Axel and one of the pups to the park. Ethan had agreed to meet him there and it was exciting. He knew that this puppy would be going to a good home with a good man.

Levi made his way to his favorite spot in the park and sat at the base of a tree. Axel laid next to him, placing his head on his lap. While the pup laid next to his daddy. Curious as ever about the green stuff they were all laying on.

Ethan was giddy. It was most certainly a weird feeling but he was going to get a puppy! Levi had told him about the litter and of course Ethan said he would take one on. He had the time, limited as it was, and he had the money. He had gone a little overboard with chew toys and food and all the accessories a dog could need, thanks to a very helpful lady at the pet store. He had even done his own research on how to take care of huskies. If he were in the business of squealing when happy, he would have probably done it the whole way from his apartment down to the park.

Parking his bicycle near the entrance, he walked in to search for his friend. Once he spotted him and Axel, Ethan brightened up and jogged over. "Is that him?" Ethan announced with a huge grin on his face.

He got on his knees and gave Axel a quick scratch before holding his hand out to the puppy. "Okay, I'm revoking my man status. He is so damn cute." He chuckled.

Levi was lost in the day. It was beautiful out. A bit on the brisk side, but he didn’t mind it. Axel was still resting on Levi’s lap. The puppies had definitely tired out more than just Levi. Luna and Axel had seemed just as exhausted, if not more.

The puppy was rolling around in the grass, purely fascinated by it. He would paw at it from time to time and try biting it if the wind made it move. He was quite adorable. Out of the corner of his eye Levi spotted someone running towards them. It was Ethan. He gave his friend a warm smile, “It is. It’s your new baby.” He said with a chuckle. Axel acknowledged Ethan’s presence with a kind huff, but remained on Levi’s lap.

Levi watched as Ethan stuck his hand out to the puppy. He let out another chuckle, “When did you ever have your man status?” He jested, letting out a laugh. He knew what he meant though, there was something about dogs. Personally it was probably Levi’s biggest weakness, which he’d never admit. The puppy’s focus was no longer towards the green things beneath him but the strange thing that was Ethan’s hand. He gave it a few sniffs before licking it a few times, and then he started to nibble on it, almost as if he was trying to determine if it was edible.

“Thanks for taking him man. I’m glad to know he’s going to a good home. Not to mention I can still see him. It makes giving him away a bit easier.”

"I'm a papa!" Ethan feigned wiping a tear from his face when the puppy nibbled on his finger before trotting up to his lap. "Oh look, he knows me already." He snorted and picked the puppy up and burying his face into the fur. He didn't care how he looked like right then. Levi's response made him roll his eyes. "Shut up you. I'm a man. Ish."

Levi's gratitude had Ethan shrugging as the puppy tried to climb over his head. "This is purely selfish. I don't even care that you get to see him. I'd probably magically not be home when you visit." He feigned innocence before adjusting himself so he could put the puppy on his lap. It rolled off and tried climbing him again.

"What do I name him? He's so cute, so Levi's out of the picture."

“Welcome to the Dad club. We meet every Wednesday. When you come to your first meeting we shall present you with an honorary pin.” He said trying to keep a straight face. His hazel eyes shifted between the puppy and Ethan. Levi started absentmindedly petting Axel’s head.

He let out a chuckled and pointed at Ethan with his free hand. “The key word there is ish.” He said smirking. Levi remained still. Enjoying the sight of his friend bonding with the puppy. He was sincere in his words, and extremely grateful. He couldn’t imagine the thought of the puppies in a cold, dark, shelter. They’d probably get adopted quickly, but he wanted to avoid that environment for them.

Levi laughed at the mention if it being selfish, but gave narrowed his eyes at his remark about what to name him. “Well first off. Levi is a fantastic name. Secondly, It’s up to you. I’ve refrained from naming any of them. I just call them all pup.” He said with a chuckle. “I didn’t want to confuse them by naming them one thing and then someone else changing it. Plus if I’d name them it would just make giving them away even harder.”

"A pin? That's so nice. I can't wait." Ethan snorted as he continued playing with his new pet. It started chewing on his fingers and he chuckled. "Did you feed him before? He's going to town on my hand, man."

The other man's jab had Ethan snorting. "Why do you insist on hurting my feelings bro. Seriously." He feigned sadness before rolling his eyes. Like he would actually take offense over something so trivial.

When the other man defended his name, Ethan moved his palm in a gesture of 'eh' jokingly. The other man's explanation did make sense. It was much harder to get detached from something you already named. "I'll think of something. In the meantime, I got you this, little guy." He fished out from his coat pocket a chew toy for the puppy. He immediately took to it and went to town on that instead of Ethan's hand.

"He's going to be a handful, isn't he?" Ethan chuckled before looking up at Levi. "Hey. How've you been anyway? Settling into being a cop already?"

Levi chuckled while his hazel eyes were locked on the puppy. “Of course I fed him. Maybe your hand is just too tasty to resist.” He said still laughing. “It’s what I do.” He said giving a shrug. Although he knew better than to think he had actually affected Ethan in anyway.

“I’m curious to see what you come up with.” He said smiling as he watched Ethan give the puppy a new toy. There was something just so fascinating about puppies. Perhaps it was their innocence, or pure curiosity to things that to most seem so…trivial.

“He will be. But if you dedicate your time and love he will grow up to be the most well behaved and friendly dog ever.” He said recalling the amount of work it took to train both Axel and Luna. He was a bit relieved that he wouldn’t have to be dealing with that anytime soon. “But then again. If he’s anything like his parents. He’ll be good.” Although, puppies regardless were always a handful.

When Ethan asked about him being a cop he shook his head slightly. “I’m fine, but the cop thing isn’t what I expected it to be.” He said, disappointment evident in his voice. Not wanting to elaborate he spoke again, “How about you man? How you’re nee job treating ya?” He asked, interested. Although he knew he wouldn’t be getting off easy on the cop thing.

Looking at Levi with a feigned flirtatious expression, Ethan smirked. "Levi, you have to stop hitting on me like this. We're in public. People will talk." He said, trying hard not to snort.

Ethan shrugged and waved it off, not knowing what to call him just yet. It'll come to him eventually. "I'll think of something later. I'll probably end up calling him something very original. Like Puppy." He responded with a smirk.

"Aww, you sound like an SPCA ad." Ethan chuckled. "But I'm sure he'll be fine." Though Ethan had never had a pet, he had done his research well before Levi had even told him about the puppies.

Oh, and boy was Levi correct about not getting off easy about his very vague answer. Ethan was definitely going to get back to that in a bit. "Pretty well. It's mostly training. I mean the first thing I do when I get home is literally crawl to bed because it's damn rigorous. But I'll be damned if it isn't helping my uh...body." Ethan still wasn't entirely certain that Levi was comfortable with him being a mutant so he always avoided mentioning his abilities if he could help it.

"What were you expecting with your job?" Ethan asked just as the puppy tried to sneak attack Ethan's hand.

Levi let out a laugh at his friend. He leaned in a bit, “People are already talking my friend.” He said between laughs. He shook his head and rolled his eyes. “VERY original. Maybe that’s what you should call him: Original.” He said sarcastically, letting out another laugh. Names were never his strong suit. For his dogs Axel was already named that, and Luna he named her because she had a thing with the moon. Plus, he thought it was a pretty name.

Waving his hand, he laughed once more, “I secretly work for them.” He whispered, “But seriously, if you ever need help. You know where to find me.” He said, tone a bit more serious. He had no problem at all helping out. Even if it was to just dog sit.

Levi listened as Ethan talked about his job. He let out a soft chuckle at the mention of it being rigorous. “That’s good man. What doesn’t kill you makes ya stronger. How much longer you have of training?” He was starting to think he had gotten away with his answer, but he was wrong.

“I’m not sure exactly. Maybe that’s part of the problem.” He was reluctant to admit that, but it was true. His hazel eyes glanced at the puppy who was going after Ethan’s hand again. “I just thought there would be more saving the world one criminal at a time kind of thing.” He said, knowing how ridiculous he must sound.

Ethan couldn't help the snort that came soon after Levi's response. He hadn't quite expected that response but he welcomed it anyway. "Ori for short?" He chuckled in the same thread of thought with the older man.

"No," Ethan feigned a scandalised look before giving Levi a genuine smile. "Yeah I know. And I'd probably call on you a lot more than I should be. Sometimes just to ask why he's still pooping on my pillow." He teased, though it wasn't really that far from the truth, if he was being honest.

Ethan's nose scrunched up a little before he chuckled. "Dude, the training is my job." He admitted. "Until I'm called for something to do, my job is to get trained to be ready when I'm called for something." He chuckled at the simple explanation of his job description, hoping Levi didn't actually ask what the 'something to do' was. Even Ethan wouldn't be able to answer that.

"And what has it become?" Ethan asked, looking down in surprise when the puppy started barking up at him incessantly. "What is it, bud?" He asked, just as the pup jumped up on Ethan's lap to chew on his shirt button, growling. "Okay, this one needs to walk. Let's go take a walk." He wrestled the puppy from his button and put him on the ground before straightening up to his full height. "Come on buddy!"

He started walking backwards to goad the puppy to come closer.

Levi gave another chuckle. “Ori…or Oreo. He does kind of look like one.” He said with smile, realizing that it wouldn’t be the worst name for a dog. There was always a worse name out there. People come up with the weirdest things. He was glad to hear his friend accept his offer. He couldn’t help but laugh and tease some more, “If he’s pooping on your pillow it’d be because I trained him to do so.” He said still laughing. The thought was quite hilarious.

The local raised an eyebrow at Ethan’s response. He still wasn’t one hundred percent sure what he job was. Although he was glad he seemed to be enjoying himself. “Something? What something?” He asked, there was no way he would let that slide by. Although he had a feeling Ethan would give a vague answer, if anything at all.

Hesitant to open up, Levi decided to go with the simplest explanation. “Too much paper work and sitting on my ass.” He said, which was true. Although he had a feeling things would be changing soon, so he wasn’t that concerned. He didn’t lie when he said it wasn’t what he thought it would be, because it wasn’t. But it was better than nothing, and although there were times when he wanted to quit he stuck it out, understand he was still relatively new to the whole thing.

His eyes shifted to the puppy who was having the chewing time of his life. When Ethan mentioned a walk, Axel shot up instantaneously giving Levi a look. Shaking his head Levi stood as well. “Sounds good to me.” He said while removing the leash from Axel. He was more than confident in his dog’s obedience and loyalty to him. The puppy however, he was extremely unsure of. He watched as the puppy ran towards Ethan, tongue out and all smiles.

"I'm still wondering why I need you as a friend now that I have this little one." He joked before laughing as well. If it did happen, he could always just scoop the puppy's business into a bag and leave it at Levi's doorstep. If he were so inclined.

Levi's question had Ethan grinning and shrugging. "Being a badass." He knew his friend wasn't going to let that die down any time soon but he also knew Levi was smart enough not to ask anymore. For now.

Grimacing, Ethan did not envy Levi his job. He had done his fair share of sitting on his ass and doing paperwork. He did not want to go back to that. "Better than nothing, huh?" He reached over and patted the other man's shoulder. He had known Levi's situation a couple of years ago and he knew it could have been worst.

As he started playing with the puppy, Ethan shamelessly realised that he had a pretty charmed life. He really couldn't ask for more than what he had right then.

Levi feigned a stab in the heart. “The fact that you feel a dog can replace me says a lot about what you think of me.” He laughed. He was glad that his friend had a new companion. Being a badass however, he couldn’t help but chuckle. “Sureeeee.” He said, not pushing anymore for now.

He gave a shrug, “I guess.” Knowing that his friend was partially right. He was glad he had the job, that was for certain. He had really come a long way in three years and he was grateful for the couple of friends that he had for support. It was also good since his monetary fund were running low, although now with his recent inheritance – which he is refusing to touch – he’d be set for a few years. But that wasn’t the point of the job, the point was because he wanted to help people, he wanted to make a difference.

He walked next to Ethan. Axel was right beside him, heeling as he had been taught. He looked over at his friend and the puppy. A smile spread across his face. Glad to be of some use.
