The silence was comfortable for Layla as well, and although she was exhausted, she didn't feel tired enough to fall asleep right along with her little boy. She just stroked his hair and looked out the window, refusing to allow herself to dwell on what was to come. Parting with Patch was always the hard part when they spent days together. She relied on him so much, which was something she couldn't stand, and yet she didn't mind with Patch. She knew he had her back, he caught her whenever she fell and he gave her the support system she lacked on the parental front. When he left, she felt like a newborn deer trying to stand for the first time, wobbly and uncertain.
As they came up to her apartment, Patch took the sleeping boy from her lap and she dug out her keys to open the door for him. Once they were inside, she closed the door behind them and felt a crushing weight fall on her. The apartment alone was a reminder of her reality and sometimes it still caught her off guard how much pain she could feel over something so seemingly small. Patch carried Nicholas to his room and she followed behind. With Nicky settled in his bed, she pulled off his shoes and pulled the blankets over him. With a kiss on his forehead, she whispered that she loved him and stood up, walking towards Patch.
The look on his face made her smile and she looked back at her whole world as he slept soundly. Her eyes found Patch again and she smiled wider, "He is pretty amazing, huh? You know it's not even all me though. He takes after everyone who has helped raise him, and that's been you for a long time." Nope, she couldn't always do sap, but when it came to Nicky, all she could do was speak from her heart.
