Jacen Scott Webster
FACE CLAIM: Hayes Grier
---------------------------------
AGE: Fifteen
GENDER: Male
ORIENTATION: unsure
POSITION: student
POWER: Telepathy (Telepathic Communication) - the ability to transmit information from one mind to another. A walking cliche, Jace can not only "read" minds, but he can also project his thoughts to another. The thing is though that Jace doesn't have the ability to delve into super secret parts of the brain to uncover embarrassing or traumatic thoughts that the person has had in the past. At most, he currently can catch onto a strand of thoughts, errant and quick, or sometimes a repetitive thought such as something that person may need to remember. When communicating explicitly with someone, he can pick up easier on what they're thinking in response than he could if he was just passing over someone's mind. It's easy to distinguish who's "voice" is who's because mental voices echo the actual voice.
LIMITATIONS:
Jace's ability is ineffective on most mental abilities because although they may have open minds, they also have better control over how to keep their minds to themselves. As stated, he can't dig down deep into the dusty corners of just anyone's mind. The only way he's ever been able to get further than the surface thoughts, was because it was his mother and it was her opening that part of her mind to him that made it easier. As a memory enhancer, he picked up on those parts of her brain much better. If someone isn't receptive to communication by way of the mind, Jace has a harder time prodding them into it, however they may mistake his mental voice for him actually speaking, it'll be soft and not as obvious though.
Jace can't just read and communicate with anyone's mind as far as he wants. At this point in his training, the furthest he can communicate is maybe another room. For instance, if his trainer is in her office, he can reach out to her and almost effectively communicate that way. Any further than one room away and he has spotty reception, only catching a few words at a time with little room for his mental voice to project.
SIDE-EFFECTS:
-Migraines of the utmost degree
-If his mental state is exhausted too much, he'll sleep for at least 48 hours
-Spacey
-Constant ear ringing
Hey! My name is Jacen Scott Webster. I'm fifteen and a half years old...er almost. I was born April 23rd. My horoscope sign is a Taurus which roughly summed up makes me stubborn and persistent, I don't like change and I prefer my routine. I'm not easily provoked, but (according to this zodiac post I found on facebook) there's an "underlying wrath" if I am angered. I don't quite ever get angry so I guess I have yet to figure that part out. My mom had me when she was sixteen and my biological dad sort of bailed, so I've never had any contact with him. My mom is now married to my step dad who came into my life when I was about three or four, probably closer to four. With him, she had my baby sister, Harley (named after my mom's favorite DC siren), who is turning five in a couple of months. I've been going to Bellefonte Academy for almost four years after manifesting into a telepath. Both of my parents were mutants, and both of them went to this school also. Uhm, that's the basics! Here's a more in depth look to my life, written in the words of my mother:
Then:
My Little Man,
I'm so sad that in all of the excitement of that first year I had with you, I didn't have enough time for this. Enough time to write out all of your quirks, all of your firsts and all of the amazing things I get to experience with you. You're two years old now, growing up way too fast if you ask me, kiddo. I already love you so much! At two years old, I'm catching traits, little things that remind me of me. You're a stubborn little thing, just like your mom, but baby, you've got the most beautiful smile. You love batman, and I'm sure I've had a small hand in that. God, Jace, you're so sociable. You love meeting people and making friends. You're quiet though, grandma and grandpa think it's something wrong with you, but I know that when you're ready, you'll open up.
Take your time little man, be what you are, don't you dare think about rushing it. You're perfect to me, my love.
You're tiny for your age, but you have the most vivid blue eyes and I was so hoping that they would stick around when I first saw them. You've got my skin complexion, so you'll tan real easily. Not that you have to worry about that too much right now. You're going to grow up into such a beautiful young man, Jacey. I can't wait to watch it happen.
I love you baby, with more to come! Here's some pictures that melt my heart already <3
~Mommy
Not so Little Man Anymore,
You're growing up so fast Jace. I can't believe you're already eight. Things are a little different now sweetie, but you're still perfect. You're hair is the same color as mine, you've got the same determined crease between your eyebrows when you concentrate and you love being active. I can't believe how good you are at football already! You've made so many friends, everyone loves you on the team and all of the parents wish you were theirs.
I know it's hard, me being so much younger than the other parents, but don't you dare believe what awful things they'll say about me or you. You weren't a mistake Jacen. You were the best thing that ever happened to me. And you know that even with the other half of you not around, you have to know that Dylan is trying so hard to make it seem like you're whole. I hope you know that we love you. That I couldn't have made it this far in life without you. You're everything I could have hoped to have.
I worry for you, Jace. Things could happen in the next few years that I'm not sure I want for you. It's hard to explain, but you know how mommy shows you her memories? I fear that you could end up in the same place. It's not terrible, I guess. But things happen there that change you and you'll always be different than your friends that you have now. I have faith that you'll excel no matter where you fit in though. You've already exceeded any expectations.
Don't let what you've lost in life ever hold you back. You have family, your uncle Max and uncle Elliot. Me and Dylan. We're your family, and we're not going anywhere baby.I'm sorry,
I know it's scary, Jace. I know you don't want to leave us. We'll come visit as much as we can, we only live just down the road. I'll facetime you every little part of Harls' day and she'll know you. I promise, you two are going to be as close as if you weren't going off to Bellefonte. I just need you to get the full effect of that school, Jace. Don't hide back in your shell, shine like you have been for the past eleven years. You'll wow them all, I know it.
Some advice for your first year, find a mentor. Tell them all about your ability. Tell them how you manifested, it'll make it so much easier. Every detail. Tell them how the voices started, mumbling at first before you latched onto it and answered back. Tell them that it was me and what I can do, see if that helps them understand how it works and what kind of abilities can enhance your own. Put yourself out there, Jace. Get involved in football, I know how much you love it. Make friends. Don't be afraid of talking, you've gotten so much better at expressing yourself, don't lose that now.
Bellefonte will become a second home to you soon enough, it led me to a lot of the people that have been in your life from the start. Max and Elliot for instance. You'll meet the best people and the worst people. Don't make my mistakes, Jacey. Make your own!
I love you with my whole heart, and you can bet I'll still be writing these while you're away!
~Mommy <3Now:
Well Jace this is it. You've reached your third year of BA, you're on the football team, the basketball team and you're in the drama club. You haven't had a girlfriend. You're not sure if you just like girls or if guys kind of attract you, too. Puberty sucked, but you've gotten taller, your jaw is stronger and working out actually seems to show now. You have friends. Lots of friends because you're "the nice popular guy." It's not a bad thing, you've come to prefer it.
Your ability is still a little out of whack. Mom says it won't fully settle down until later on. You're doing really well in school. You're smart, but you're still quiet. People still have a hard time talking to you because they don't get why you are the way you are. They don't get that your ability has become a crutch, a way of expressing how you feel without having to say it. You're working on it though. Mom is making you see a counselor because of this.
Harley's birthday is coming up and you still have to figure out if any of the games or the play falls on the same day. You can't miss her birthday or she'll eat you. Sometimes I expect her to manifest into a shark. You miss her though. Every day. Every moment because she's the second most important person in your life. Aside from Mom. Harls is doing so well communicating with her thoughts. Even if it is hard to keep track of where she's going. You connect with her, the way you connect with Mom.
Everyone knows your a momma's boy. Some of the guys on the teams make fun of you for it, but you don't let it get to you. You're strong that way. And they don't seem to like it.
You've found your mentor, your trainer. She's really good at what she does and you like the way she gets you. She didn't judge you for such a spotty ability that only works 46% of the time when you're working on something you don't have the hang of. She taught you about how Mom's ability coaxed your own manifestation. Sharing memories of your childhood had opened you up to telling her how much you loved growing up with such a great mom, without having to say it. She isn't surprised by you using it as a crutch to communicate when you're nervous. She gets that you don't like to talk and she's okay with that. She also says you're a great listener and that someone will find that endearing some day.
You have potential. Keep up the good work, buddy!
When you need a reminder that things aren't as bad as they seem.
You're doing just fine.
