Chase William Reed
FACE CLAIM: Thomas Brodie-Sangster
---------------------------------
AGE: 18
GENDER: Male
ORIENTATION: Homosexual
POSITION: Bellefonte College Student
POWER: Duplication
Chase's power is body duplication. When he uses it, he closes his eyes and pictures a second him growing out of, say, his hand. The body doesn't actually appear until he pictures it as actually the same as him, and this can happen in a couple of seconds. Both bodies have the same cells. Because they're exactly the same, his consciousness is shared between them. It thinks of them as two parts of a whole. While stuck to his real body, it can leave his new one, which would cause the new one to disappear. His copies don't eat or drink or use the restroom because anything it consumed would disappear with it.
Making his copy depends on concentration. If he hasn't focused enough, nothing happens. He's been working on it for a few years, so he's gotten pretty good at forming a body and keeping it active and formed for a while (anywhere from thirty minutes to two hours.
All he has to do to make them fade is stop focusing on them. A controlled fade is like slowly going limp. The copy may look like it's about to faint and its eyes are closed. At some point, his mind won't be controlling it any more and it will disappear. The 'fade' part is referring to his mind slowly 'fading' out of it. If the transition is a snap, it's very sudden. The body just stops existing. This is followed by a major headache and usually some loud swear words from his real body.
LIMITATIONS:
Unfortunately, this does have its limits.
-One is the exact duplicate part. While Chase keeps any muscle his real body may have, he also keeps any injuries. Any injury done to either body will cause the copy to fade, but this is more of a focus issue. Pain can keep him from focusing enough to sustain a copy or make one.
-Another aspect of the duplication is clothing. Chase will copy over anything in his body like food or medication, but any clothes won't duplicate at all. He makes sure to keep a set or two of clothes with him at all times for this reason, and unless it's an extreme emergency, he'll only make a copy in a private place like his room or a bathroom. Everything copied will fade at one time when he loses concentration.
-Range is not much of an issue. He has to be touching the copy when he makes it, but after that, they can be miles apart with no problem. He assumes. He hasn't tested this yet.
-Recovery is also a problem. If he's got a headache from too quick of a fade, he'll have to wait for that to go away. Chase will usually be able to create his other body within an hour of his last fade. With a headache, that can take up to six hours. Painkillers can help but aren't great for his focus. In another sense of the word, recovery is an issue because his clothes are wherever his body faded so he'll have to go get them eventually.
-The last limit is mental. Chase is controlling both bodies with one mind. Because of the level of focus needed to create a body, he can only make one copy at a time (for now). He's gotten to the point where he can use both bodies at once, but with that, sudden distractions will fade out the copy. That can last for about half an hour on average. When he's using only the copy, he can get up to two hours, but he doesn't like doing that much because it involves very little focus on his real self and leaves him vulnerable.
SIDE-EFFECTS:
-The first time he ever used his power, it gave him a migraine so horrible that he passed out for two days. Luckily, this doesn't happen every time. A couple of things influence this. One is how the copy fades. If it's a sudden snap back into one body, his mind doesn't take that well and he usually ends up with a nasty headache. If it's a gradual, controlled change, he's usually fine.
-Another side effect is exhaustion. He can't sleep when he's controlling a copy. While his real body is usually resting, he tires out his mind pretty thoroughly after an hour plus of focus. That usually calls for a nap pretty soon afterward, and he won't be able to form another copy for a couple of hours, maybe one if he tries hard enough.
HEIGHT: 5ft 10in. A little short for guy's standards but not too bad overall.
HAIR COLOR: Light brown.
EYE COLOR: Dark brown.
MISC: Chase wears mostly tighter-fitting clothing that will transfer over with him. So if his clothes look a size too small for him, that's because they are. If he's wearing only tighter-fitting clothes, there's a good chance that body is his copy.
PERSONALITY: Chase is not a social one. He's always focused on improving himself and ignoring others for the most part. He still has a few friends, but nobody super close yet. Why not? The simple fact is that Chase is paranoid, and really the only things he's worried about are other people. He's been betrayed before, and he's scared about letting others into his life now. Trying to corner him into telling you something will likely end with him fading or running, depending on which form he's in.
Speaking of running, when it comes down to facing danger or fleeing, Chase is going to run pretty much every time. His focus stinks in fights, and he doesn't have an offensive power. If someone he actually cared about was in the fight, he might try to get them to safety. Maybe. It all depends on how much he's panicking.
If he could fight though, he would. Chase has some pretty clear-cut morals. Stealing is bad. Lying is bad. Cheating is bad. Anything worse than that is bad. He's pretty naive in that he thinks people are either good or bad, and Chase thinks that he should be able to stick with those morals. But the lines aren't always that clear, and at some point he'll have to face that.
One of the things he's very passionate about is gymnastics. He was training for that long before he ever developed his power. It's hard work and he's had his fair share of injuries, but he loves it because it allows him both freedom and control at the same time. Being able to fly through the air and land exactly where he wants to is something he greatly enjoys. Gymnastics has been one of the few constant things from his early childhood until now. It's made him a hard worker to get what he wants and has also made him very agile.
One thing he hates most out of almost anything is a backstabber. Chase was a very trusting person before someone close to him betrayed him. Now, he treats about everyone like they might stab him in the back, making him somewhat cold to other people. On the inside, he misses having close friends. People who could make him laugh and smile. He doesn't do that much any more. The ones he's closest to are his parents and Jimmy.
Eventually, he wants to have a close friend again, and love would be nice too. He's jealous of people in close relationships. He wants to get better at gymnastics and using his power. Other than that, he's not sure what he wants out of life.
SECRET(S): Most of the details about his life before he came to Bellefonte. Most aren't bad things but he doesn't want others to know and doesn't like telling people about them. Also his homosexuality, but if someone actually worked up the nerve to ask, he'd probably tell them.
FATHER: William, Reed
MOTHER: Anna, Reed
SIBLINGS: None
WORTHY MENTIONS: He has a robo dwarf hamster whose name is Jimmy.
CHILDHOOD: Anna and William were in their late thirties when they married. Very much in love, they hoped that they would still be able to have a child of their own. After another year and a half of waiting, Chase was born healthy. They gave him the middle name William, not after his father, but after his grandfather who had just passed away. Chase was just a name they liked, but it seemed to fit him, especially when he started moving around on his own.
They were the perfect family. The Reeds lived in the south, Georgia in fact. Chase was a bright, energetic little boy who ran and laughed all the time. His parents did spoil him a little, him being the only child. Chase started school and did fairly well. He was almost always well behaved. When he was about five, his parents decided to put some of his energy towards an actual sport and signed him up for gymnastics lessons. While he didn't like the exercises much, he did enjoy the lessons, so they kept sending him.
ADOLESCENCE: When he started middle school, Chase was sent to a different school than most of his friends due to the public school system. Those friends quickly found new friends, which hurt. He tried to make new friends, but somehow, none of them really clicked until he met Stacy. She was one of the cutest girls in his grade and quickly took a liking to him. They did everything together. She came to all of his gymnastics meets, and he came to the football games she cheered for. They stayed up late chatting on the phone. If he'd been straight, she probably would have been the girl of his dreams. Instead, Chase started noticing guys. He only had a few friends who were boys, and none of them were very close to him. So he kept quiet. He'd go through high school, go somewhere out of state to college, and then start dating. Until then, he'd just look. No harm in that, right?
Of course, he was completely oblivious to the fact that Stacy had a crush on him. She was getting annoyed that he wasn't picking up any of her hints, actually. So when she kissed him, he was very confused. And he kind of pushed her away, blushing and stammering that she was just a friend to him. Then he ran off, leaving a bewildered and hurt Stacy behind. She started to become suspicious after that. They became friends again, but not quite as close as before. She assumed that maybe he had a crush on another girl. But after pretty much stalking him for a few weeks, she realized that it wasn't a girl. His lingering looks on some of the older boys proved that. By this time, they were in eighth grade. She confronted him about it in an empty classroom at school, and he admitted that he was gay. The next day, the entire school knew.
Hurt, he ignored Stacy for a full school day. He knew she had betrayed him. He'd never felt so lonely in his life. That night, he stood in front of his mirror and glared at his reflection. He wished he was straight. He wished Stacy hadn't told his secret. Mostly though, he wished he had a friend. He missed having someone he could tell everything to, and he doubted the other kids at school would want to be his friend now. Upset, he looked at the mirror and wished with all his might that there were two of him. Then he could be his own friend. When he blinked, he was staring back at himself.
The copy only appeared for a second before his shock caused it to vanish. Instantly, his head felt like someone had hit it with a sledgehammer. The pain was so great that he passed out. Both of his parents were off visiting his sick aunt, so he woke up about two days later with a small headache as the only person who knew what had happened. Luckily it was a weekend. He was worried about calling the headache back, but extremely curious about what had happened. So Chase tried again. This time he was able to keep his copy up for a few seconds. The headache was bad, but he didn't pass out this time. Every day after school, he kept trying. Every day, he got a little bit better.
A week after his first attempt, his mom caught him practicing. She probably would have been freaked out if it hadn't been for the awful headache he got when she distracted him. She told his father, and they asked him about it, so he told them everything. They accepted it all. They thought it was wonderful and even tried his gift themselves, but nothing happened for them. At his request, they started looking for another school for him to go to. The family also spent quite a bit of time on Google, trying to find out information about his gift. That might have been what tipped off the staff, because days later they were at his door.
At first, he was wary about going with them. Chase didn't trust people half as easily now, and if he said yes he'd be going to a school all the way across the country. His parents had many questions for the staff. Eventually, they all decided it wouldn't be a bad idea. Chase was interested in learning how to use his powers and he'd wanted to go to a new school anyway. After promises to write and to come home as much as he could, he packed, hugged his parents, and left.
He's gotten a pretty good education there. Spectre's attack and the IMAC both happened while he was at school. It's interesting and somewhat terrifying to see all of the mutant powers. Over the years, he's been developing his own gift. He also joined the gymnastics team. Slowly he's gained a few people that he considers friends. But he still hasn't dated and he still has a hard time letting others in.
ADULTHOOD: By the time graduation came around, Chase decided that he wanted to stay at Bellefonte and go to college there. His parents were thrilled when they told him. As a graduation gift, they gave him a hamster. He hadn't realized how much he'd always wanted a pet until then. Jimmy is small and fairly easy to take care of, and he's only escaped once. Luckily, he can't get out of Chase's room if he does. Jimmy is probably the biggest difference between college and high school for Chase.
Honestly, Chase has no idea what to major in or what to do after college. He's still trying to figure that out. He kind of wants to do something with his powers though, and possibly something with gymnastics. Until then, he's going through school the same as usual, though he's started opening up just a bit more to other people. Maybe this year he'll have a best friend again.
SAMPLE: Callie had no idea why Nate had made such a fuss about telling her what he wanted, and she tried not to show her amusement on her face. This was simple. She'd been doing strong familiars for months now. The tattoo would have to be pretty big to power this one, but he'd already said he wanted a big one on his back, so that wouldn't be a problem either. In fact, from what he'd said, she would have no issues doing the job. None whatsoever.
...Granted, he'd need to be pretty strong-willed in order to control it. In that, Nate was a tad lacking. That was putting it nicely. He'd had this constant look of fear on his face since they'd started talking. Callie was powerful, but she wasn't that scary. If Nate wanted the creature to not break free and attack him, he'd have to force it to stay there. She could add a few marks to help, but that would weaken its power, and it seemed to her that he really didn't want to do that.
She decided to warn him at least. Callie frowned and crossed her arms. "Look, I can do it. I can even make it look great. But it'll cost you. Familiars this strong don't come cheap. They're dangerous too, and if you want it to obey you, you'll have to make it obey you. Otherwise it'll go after you. Are you sure you want something this strong?" She paused. "Also, I know you said strong, but how strong are we talking about? And what creature?" He hadn't been very clear.
